I have to comment on this topic! In 2003 I had a heard attack attributed to clogged arteries. Since then I gave up 2 Cokes a day,1+ packs of cigarettes daily, all salt, cut down half on meat and am adding tofu and other healthy alternatives to my diet. The one thing that is proving to be by far the hardest to change is butter. I've tried all the healthy brands. I can tolerate Parkay spray. But when I slip and NEED butter I go for Smart Balance 50/50 blend sticks. Can't tell it from all real butter. Hopefully someday I can wean myself off this too. But I haven't been able to for 6 years now.

Thanks, Carmen!

It has been a struggle all the way...but so happy to be half way there!
I forgot to add that the reason that I use Smart Balance is not only that it is healthier, but I think it taste great & I can use the sticks to cook with, so it's a win-win situation!

"i even used it in my cookies and it works." That's what I'm talking about! How does it bake? How does it fry? How does it taste on your toast? Why do you like it!

Thank you so much for the input,

Carmen

Okay. Mine is not a spread, I use smart balance 50/50 butter blend. Put it in a dish and it get s soft. I have been following a no hydrogenated oils and no fructose corn syrup eating program and have lost inches. These two are not in the butter. i even used it in my cookies and it works. It has flaxseed and omega in it.
For flaxseed, I found powdered flaxseed and use it in my oatmeal or fruit smoothie.

I use Smart Balance....that is the one that the cardiologist recommended. I see that they have a "heart smart" one now, so will try it next...

I don't know the brands you get where you live, but I go for reduced fat versions of:
- Olive Oil
- Avocado Oil
- Rice Bran Oil
- Canola/Sunflower

I use the light because I don't like a lot of fats (used to use extra light but not fat intake was extremely low, so I had to increase the amount of fat).

Good Luck.

you just want to see me going 10 for 10!

I figured everyone would respond with Promise Heart Smart Spread, it's the only one I've ever heard of. I really appreciate the input.

Thank you,

I use Benecol - according to what I have read it helps reduce the cholesterol.

If you would like a lot of great information read Dr. Janet Brill's book "Cholesterol Down" - she is totally in favor or reducing the #'s naturally.

Doc just gave me the news, first time ever, I'm 279 (chloresterol). So the house is now filled with pretty much 9 of the top 10 foods, I'm not really a fan of flax seeds.

What do I do about the buttery spread? Which do you use and why.

I'm going to want about 3 tsps for breakfast daily - the rest of the day I can skip it.

I've got one stick of margarine left in the fridge before I have to buy something new, please take a minute to let me know.

Thank you,

Carmen
