My Doc also told me to do purified fish oil and flax oil. I've only been taking one capsule per day. That's probably not enough.
BUT - I am eating wild salmon 2x per week, 1 oz. of almonds per day, and some hummus every day as well. Hummus has tahini - which is ground sesame seeds.

Just had a thought, too, if you buy ready-ground flax seeds, only buy small quantities, and from suppliers who have a quick turnover with that sort of thing, because once they are ground, it reduces their shelf-life. If you have a coffee grinder, it is best to buy them unground, and grind them yourself, either on a daily basis, or only enough for a few days at the most.

I am glad the flax seeds worked for you. My understanding is that the flax seed must not be heated i.e. not put into cooking, for it to have benefits for the HDL. Also, to be very careful about storage - daylight, storing near heat and moisture can reduce it's effectiveness.

When I was eating 1/4 cup freshly ground flax seeds daily, my HDL became higher than my LDL. I am planning on going back to that. I first read about in Dr.Northrup's book. She recommends it very highly and it certainly helped me and my husband.

My HDL is too low also - my Dietician prescribed 1000mg Omega3 Fish Oil Capsules taken 2 3x daily. Do check with your doctor first, tho' because it could interfere with some medications. We talked about Flax Seed Oil and she said that it does work with SOME people, but there was no way to know whether your body converts it or not, whereas the fish oil is made use of (check if you are allergic to fish, tho') I have yet to have my bloods done again at that level. For the first 3 months I was on 1, 3x daily, but she said that was only a maintenance dose, not a therapeutic dose.

Garlic and green tea are some more ways to control cholesterol. Of course, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, too.

I am using diet and exercise and prescription fish oil called Lovaza. My biggest problem is the triglycerides, and I am fighting an inherited trait for high numbers there.

My overall numbers are okay, and the Lovaza keeps my triglycerides in the high end of the range.

I'm taking Lipator, Niacin, and fish oil. Plus exercising.

If you try Niacin please check with your doctor first. Flaxseed oil, and fish oil are the easiest and probably the best way for you to increase your HDL. You can find them with the vitamins.
Increase your consumption of fish, nuts and seeds. They have omega3 fats which will increase HDL and decrease LDL.

My HDL and LDL are great, for me it is my Triglyserides that are bad. They are down but not enough.

Hi there, I'm new and still looking around, but I was wondering about natural remedies for upping HDL. I've heard of niacin, walnuts, and vigorous exercise. My LDL is ok, borderline, I guess, but my HDL is really low. Any suggestions on what I can do? Thanks!
