Granny, You are getting a lot of good advice here. Just be sure to start and continue on the right path/s for you. What works for you MAY NOT work for someone else, but give it a try and see what does work for you and stick to that regimen. Ok? Good luck and we are still here for you.

Granny,

One of the most important foods in lowering cholesterol is just plain Oatmeal. One of the things to stay away from is all dairy products.

All excellent information everyone! Watch for things like MonoUnsaturated Fatty Acids in the ingredients list. MUFA's. These are the good fats that we all need to eat more of, to replace the bad fats found in meats. These fats increase our HDL cholesterol, and help to flush out the bad LDL cholesterol. They will even, over time, help to remove the plaques from our arteries. They work best along with soluble fiber, such as found in oatmeal and ground flax seed. And fruit. All fiber is good for us, but the insoluble fiber like that found in wheat is non-digestible and basically just passes through us, scouring our intestines. We come out squeaky clean, so to speak. I find that now, at my age, I have a low tolerance to that kind of fiber. But the soluble fiber helps a lot; I just have to be careful not to get too much of it, as I may have a touch of IBS. All nuts have lots of MUFA's. But they are also very high in fat overall, so be careful! As someone noted here, change comes slowly, so don't expect an overnight miracle. And to help remember which is which, think of LDL as 'Lousy' and HDL as 'healthy.' And to get those pesky triglycerides down, cut way back on things like white sugar, potatos and white flour; empty carbs that just turn to sugar in your stomach. Go for the complex carbohydrates, like whole wheat bread, (again) oatmeal, etc. And good luck!

At your next appointment, ask your doctor to provide the results broken down among the different types for both the new tests as well as the old. Your doctor is supposed to be working for you, helping you clarify any medical questions you have.

Good luck!
Mike

Total should be below 200.

Fiber is good for lowering it. I just baked Fiber One cinnamon apple muffins this weekend and they are delicious. I make huge ones so I've been getting 10 grams of fiber per muffin this week. I also switched to double fiber bread-- 6 g per slice. Now I'm having to make sure I don't exceed 30 grams per day. lol.

Ground flax seed is easy to slip into your meals and has a significant lowering effect.

I read Controlling your cholesterol for dummies (from the library) to learn information. Good luck beating this!

Thanks, I'm not a big meat eater and haven't been for some time now. I started using smart balance margerine when he told me about the cholesterol problem. I also bought Benocol chews, They are expensive but they are supposed to be good. I never was big on cheese. what is the total cholesterol you should have in a day? Is it around 200 or 300 hundred? Thanks.

Granny, you are in the same place I am with Cholesterol. I understand it better now that I have known about my Cholesterol probs over a year now. That # he gave you is the TOTAL cholesterol and you DO want it to come down under 200. Mine is 230 and I HAVE to get mine down too. It used to be over 240, and I got it down in a years time. It takes awhile to get it up and it may take awhile to get it down. Eating Cheerios and taking Fish oil pills OTC and taking OTC Garlic, have been helping me. ONE per day is suffice, but ask a pharmacist or doctor first. I donot take and donot wanna take Prescriptions Meds either. Believe me, I am allert for ALL ways to help myself keep this lowered once it gets to where it should be. Stay away from RED meats too. Veggies are real good to eat and so are fruits. Drink PLENTY of water. It don't have to be palin water either. Light Tea or green tea is especially good, preferably DIET. I eat egg substitutes too and not the real egg. Unless I seperate the yolks, cause the cholesterol is in the yolks. Try to go with Smart Balance oils when you cook. Smart balance butter. Yes, it is expensive, but compare your Doctor cost/s and the new foods to change too. Walnuts are good too. Cranberry juices and orange are good. Yes, these are all the things I use/drink/eat. & They are working for me. I need to learn how to get the TOTAL down. Here are my first last year results and then I will post the second one's.
January 2008 Results
HDL 32
LDL 144
Total 233
Triglycerides 277

Decemeber 2008 Results:
HDL 27
LDL 128
Total 230
Triglycerides 377
SOME of these are better than before. I still have a little ways to go on all counts though. I AM DOING IT. YOU can too.
LDL means low HDL means high and you want HDL to stay and get higher. You want the LDL to get and stay lower. Triglycerides Must stay below or at 200.
This is what My Doctor told me.

Does any one know any good web sites for information? My doctor said mine was 256 but didn't tell me how it was broken up. He gave me 3 months to lower it before he retests me. That is in about 2 wks. I've been really pretty good about watching what I eat in that department. I don't want to go on meds for it.
