I know the feeling I lost 35 pounds and the Doctors were really pleased. My Cardiologist and my GP both added additional drugs and I thought I would have been given lower doses. My sugar was higher 107 and my triglycerides went up. I was put on Metformin for the sugar and Antara to lower my triglycerides and increase my HDL healthy cholesterol. So now I am on 3 drugs to lower my cholesterol 1 for my hears and blood presser. 1 for my sugar and 1 for depression. I went back 3 months later and my sugar did go down to 96 but my triglycerides went up from 175 to 183 although my HDL went from 39 to 40. I can't win. Maybe if I lose 100 pounds it will help. That is what I am hoping for. I won't give up.

Agreed on the good fats. The only fat I have in my house is extra virgin olive oil. Hubby still uses margerine, but I don't.

When I had bloodwork done after losing about forty pounds and working diligently for several months...I got all excited, expecting good numbers.

MAN! Was I disappointed when my total cholesterol number zoomed UP to 307!!! ?
The other numbers were frightening.

The highest reading I had EVER had when off meds was 240. So that 307 blew me away.

So I caved in and started on Crestor. I've only been on it for a couple of weeks and all the old symptoms have returned...muscle pain ...lethargy ...headaches ...

In addition I had been doing the oatmeal, flax, fish oil, CoQ10, oh....I dunno.. Just doing a bunch of the "healthy" things that were supposed to help.

Instead I was in the worst shape I'd ever been.

All these tips and tricks work wonderfully for some people. Unfortunately, I don't seem to be one of them.

Gotta get back to the doc and see what "plan B" might be.

Hugs,
Jay/Dyanne

Many natural remedies have positive side effects so why not make them part of your daily life? If you're not allergic to it, try it. I take suck an aloe lead every day to prevent stones. Brocolli relatives to prevent cancer. There are so many that just make sense. I smoked mullein this morning for asthma, tea is better but I was acting up right then. The best thing for cholesterol is no bacon! lol

Good fats are important too... try switching to extra virgin olive oil and peanut oil for salad dressings and stirfrying... and add an avocado now and then too.

One thing that lowered my numbers by 20 points was just drinking lemon in hot water twice a day. I use a quarter of a lemon per cup, just squeeze it into a coffee cup, drop it in (add your favorite sweetener if you want) and pour boiling water over it. Let it steep like you would tea, then remove the lemon and drink the hot water... I call it 'hot lemonade', and have it entered as a favorite to my nutrition tracker.

Good luck!

"The real secret of success is enthusiasm..." thanks, Walter P. Chrysler. I believe it. That's what I want in my life--to give my imagination a chance, to live with energy and enthusiasm!

Ralph Waldo Emerson said 'Life belongs to the energetic.' But you don't have to be frenetic and hyper--some energy is quiet and steady, like a heartbeat... and that works too! LOL

Life comes in specific increments, which we receive as a gift of one moment at a time. That's why it's called

Crosby,

Those meds don't have that effect on everybody. It's an individual thing. Some people do fine on them.

Also, the natural remedies work wonders on some people. Again...it's the individual.

What I was told (when my readings went SO high) was that it's a classic case of the genetic kind of high cholesterol. It's not from the foods I eat, but rather my body going into overdrive and producing it alone.

When I dramatically reduced the fat I was eating...that "other" fat started pouring out (of my liver? not sure where it comes from)

Whatever the case, some of those natural remedies might be worth a try, as well as controlling your diet..getting the exercise...if you smoke...stop.

That works really well for some people.

Good luck,
Jay/Dyanne

It's a struggle that's for sure. I have been working on the natural remedies myself and am slowly gaining weight. Maybe even the good fats don't agree with me? I wish I knew the answers.

It is not very promising hearing that all of these have this affect.

Oh...this subject is such grief for me.

For months I did the oatmeal...COQ10...flax....extremely low-fat eating...lost a lot of weight. Then my blood work came back and it was higher than it had EVER been.

And like ya'll have mentioned below...meds make me hurt all over....feel like lead weights are tied to my legs and arms...almost constant headaches....absolutely NO energy..

Doc put me on a different one than I'd taken in the past (I've had Lipitor and Zetia). Now I've been on Crestor for a couple of weeks and the whole thing is happening again.

Oh...the meds do what they're supposed to do. My numbers do fall to acceptable levels, but my quality of life goes out the window.

It's back to the doc early in December, but if these side effects get much worse, she's can expect a call. I have no clue where we go from here.

It's very frustrating, isn't it?

Hugs,
Jay/Dyanne

Ground flaxseed (1 - 4 Tbs) is supposed to be helpful as is oatmeal daily. There are more suggestions as well. Almonds, apples, minimum of 30 minutes exercise daily... Good luck

I take 2 Kyolics (garlic supplements) a day.

Why is weight so easy to find, but so hard to lose?

I had the same problem with the lovastatin, muscle aches. I added a daily CoQ10 to my supplements and it helped me. Some people it doesn't help though.

Hi, I am new here and new to prescription cholesterol meds. My doctor put me on SIMVASTATIN three weeks ago. In the three weeks I have gained at least 3 lbs. I also run daily and noticed that I now no energy and I ache all over. I am looking for an alternative natural remedy to reduce my cholesterol. Any suggestions?
