The book says 1 clove of fresh garlic either mashed up in something like guacamole or lighly sauted plus 1 Kyolic aged garlic capsule a day. I got mine at Walmart. I eat tons of garlic as my background is Italian. My favorite is any kind of cooked green like kale or collard greens or even spinach. I saute sliced garlic in Extra Virgin Olive Oil till just slightly golden then add rinsed chopped fresh kale or other green a bit of water and a little salt. Simmer until tender. We love it at our house and my 14-year-old daughter could eat bowls of it. I do take one Kyolic garlic capsule a day as well because there is something about the "aged" garlic in that.... It does not have an aftertaste either. I cannot recommend that book, Cholesterol Down enough. Will let you know about my results in December. I am going whole hog on this regimen cause I want to get off of the Lipitor. It is the only prescription I am taking. I was on Celexa for 10 years and have been off of that for ONE year! Feel great. Omega-3 Fish oil capsules for that. Golly - you'de think I'de have garlicky fish breath but nobody close to me has mentioned it (and believe me, my 14-year-old daughter holds nothing back!!!) emoticon

Benecol Chews are only available online. The Benecol margerine is in stores, but the chews only online. Here is the link with 99% rave reviews:

http://www.amazon.com/Benecol-Smart-Chew
s-Caramel-120-Count/dp/B000NBQUNW

The reviews are very inspirational to read. I just ordered them and will let you know what I think. I am strictly doing the 10 simple steps in the book, "Cholesterol Down" and one of them is to take plant phytosterols as in the Benecol. Here are the 10 steps and if you are a healthy eater anyway, it really is not that difficult. I found that I did 50% of this list anyway.
1. Plant Sterols
2. Soy protein
3. Garlic, raw and 1 supplement
4. Psyllium husk (Metamucil)
5. Oatmeal (1 cup a day slow cooking, not instant)
6. Flaxmeal (2 Tb)
7. Apple (1 raw)
8. Beans (kidneys, black, garbanzos, 1/2 cup)
9. Almonds (handful)
10. walking briskly (at least 30 minutes a day)

I found that if you combine some of these together it is not that overwhelming. For instance I eat my apple with a handful of almods and incorporate my ground flaxmeal in my oatmeal. I eat edamame every day as a snack, steamed and with a little sea salt (yum). I am soooo anxious to see in December whether 3 months worth of being extremely strict have made a difference in my blood work. I too have hereditary high cholesterol. Let's all motivate each other. I highly recommend the book Cholesterol Down to anyone who has tried everything and nothing works. emoticon

Yes..I was on Zetia for quite awhile also, but I eat so little fat now...and then only GOOD fat...the Zetia was no longer right for me. No real side effects with Zetia in my case, other than mild muscle pain...and fatigue.

But then, I was forty pounds heavier and packing my body with way too much starch and fat...so was the fatigue from Zetia or from my unhealthy habits? Dunno.

I take another Crestor tonight. Hope I don't get that wierd headache again. If I do, then it's going to be a red flag that I can't take this med. We'll see...

Hugs all,
Jay

I haven't heard of them. I have been on
lipitor for 7 years
Zetia for 2 years removes cholesterol from what you eat
Antara 3 months, It's supposed to lower your Triglycerides and raise your HDL good cholesterol.
I got my blood test results

Total 171
LDL 94
HDL 40
Triglycerides 183
Sugar 96

My triglycerides went up 8 points not down and my HDL went up 1 point big deal

I lost 36 pounds and I thought I would be taking less drugs. they gave me 2 more drugs the Antara and Metformin for the sugar. The sugar did go down by 10 points. They put me on both drugs 3 months ago. I had lost 32 pounds at that time. I won't give up because it certainly can't hurt for me to keep losing weight. It may still help after I lose 50 or 60 pounds. I will keep at it.

Good luck to all of you with the upcoming bloodwork...and I sincerely mean that.

Recently I went in for the same reason. I was eagerly waiting the results and it blew up in my face. My cholesterol readings were the highest they've ever been..I mean EVER!

I give up. I've done everything in my power to correct this and it simply didn't work. It's SO hard to resign myself that I have to accept help with it. I've had reactions to both Lipitor and Zetia in the past. Because of this I was so very reluctant to go back on meds but I guess I have to.

Doc is trying me on a very low dose of Crestor..only three times a week...then increasing while paying attention to possible reactions. I took the first one last night. After about four or five hours I developed a nasty headache. Was it the Crestor? Dunno...I don't take one tonight but will have to see what happens tomorrow night when I take another one.

Sigh...life is so aggravating sometimes, isn't it?

Oh...those nasty readings (still give me the shivers and make me so angry I want to spit...)

Total Cholesterol-----302
Triglycerides---------229
HDL--------------------43
LDL-------------------208

This is after eight or nine months here and losing 40 pounds. NO cheating..I've been fanatical about what goes in my mouth. EXTREMELY low fat intake...etc...yada yada yada..

The point is: it just hasn't worked for me. I do plan to continue what I'm doing and lose the rest of this blasted weight (over half way to my goal now), but I concede defeat on the cholesterol issue.

I truly hope the rest of you have a better outcome.

Hugs,
Jay

Hi Everybody. Has anyone tried Benecol Chews with the plant sterols and stanols in them? I would love to hear your success or failure with these. I have hereditary high cholesterol which goes down a bit with exercise and dietary changes but I have been on Lipitor for 10 years and would like to go off! I have been reading the book, Cholesterol Down, which is fantastic by the way, and have been incorporating all of the dietary changes, including walking/running 45 min to 1 hour a day. I have my blood work done in December and I am anxious to see any downward slide. My good cholesterol is fantstic (very high, near 99) but my total number is over 200 and my triglycerides are not good and now my bad cholesterol is not good either. Anyway, any luck on the Benecol Chews anyone?
