I followed a pretty severe diet with no eggs, etc., for 6 months. The blood test didn't improve. My doctor thinks mine is inherited. He actually is prescribing this over the counter stuff. He checks my liver function twice a year, and my kidney function once a year. Those are all blood tests taken when I have my cholesterol checked.

I am maintaining and go back for another check the first week of December. I have heard that Niacin can cause liver problems - not sure about that. I was already taking fish oil and my dr recommended I double the dose. I only eat eggs two or three times a months, because just one egg puts me almost at my limit for cholesterol for the day and then I have to watch meat for the rest of the day. Someone gave me a whole bunch of egg beaters and they are pretty good. I drink about 10 cups of water per day also. The metimucil is working great for me. I only take two doses a day and that seems to work fine. I started out with one dose a day for about a week and then went up to two. When do you go for a checkup? do you know your numbers? Good luck to you!

Congrats. I hope you are maintaining.

I was interested in the information about this book. I have a totally different book. I wondered if your book mentioned any thing about the following:

My book doesn't mention apples. In stead it recommends boldly colored berries such as blue berries, strawberries, cranberries, purple grapes.

My book recommends fish oil capsules and Niacin. My doctor also recommended Niacin. At this time I take 500 mg every day, and occassionally an extra dose. Eventually I am suppose to be able to tolerate higher doses without side effects.
It recommends a high fiber diet in general and suggested foods. That might be where the apples come in.

I tried Citricel. even though I drank 2 cups of water in the hour before I took it, and followed it with 2 more cups of water within the hour after taking it, I became very constipated and had to take a stool softener. I don't see how you tolerated the Metamucil twice a day. I drink closer to 12 cups of water a day. Am I unusual?

I have been told by a nurse friend who works for a group of cardiologist that the South Beach diet is being recommended to their patients. That it is lowering cholesterol as they lose weight. They also put them in walking or cycling programs. My first week, I ate a lot of eggs, but with my doctor's approval. Actually, I was only eating one yolk per day. The rest was whites. When I figured out that I could eat fat-free yogurt, I switched to that and put almonds in it. In another week, I will add my oatmeal back in.

Wow, Kathy. I had never heard about the lemon, but I'm going to try it. I need all the help I can get!
Thanks!

I'll have to check it out!

Unfortunately there are a few items I see on your list I can NOT do: no soy, and I have CKD and am on a potassium restricted regimen because of the medications I have to take for my kidneys... which means the beans...hm.

Something else you may want to ADD to YOUR list...

I dropped 20 points off my readings simply by steeping fresh lemon in hot water and drinking it twice a day. I also add lemon to my ice water whenever I go to a restaurant. Easy, inexpensive, tasty... and it works! (At least for me! LOL)

Interesting side effect, I don't seem to get so many cravings, so appetite is less of a problem...

Life comes in specific increments, which we receive as a gift of one moment at a time. That's why it's called

A good warning about the flax; that is why I suggest everyone to read the book. It gives you warnings about every item because some can interact with other medication you are taking. Soy also is a blood thinner. I take a baby aspirin every day and the doctor said I am fine. I take the flax oil tablet, don't use the flaxseed seeds or the oil. Seemed like too much trouble. I also take two fish oil tablets a day and my doctor suggested I double that, but not to substitute it for the flaxseed oil tab. The reason i choose the Cholestoff instead of buying margarine with the phytosterols is calories and easier to take the Cholestoff. I watch for it to go on sale at Walgreens for buy one get one free as it is expensive; $19.99 for a two month supply. However, not a bad price to pay to stay off the statins!! If anyone has any questions or would like a copy of my spreadsheet that helped me get on track and stay on track, you can email me at robynrhutchins@hotmail.com. Be sure to talk to your doctor before going off any medication and read the book!! Cholesterol Down by Janet Bond Brill Good Luck to all!!

Can you cook with the flax? I know the oil must be kept cold and you can't cook with it. But, can you throw it in with the oatmeal and cook it?

I use flaxmeal in oatmeal, salads, gravies and yogurt.

A word of caution about FLAX if no one else has mentioned it. It is a natural blood thinner and if you happen to be on a blood thinner already, use caution. Read all you can about it.

This is fantastic news. Does anyone happen to know if fish oil would work in place of the flax oil. My doctor has me on 4 capsules, and I figured it would be to much oil to add more. Well, there is powdered flax to put in oatmeal.

Robyn, just one little exception to your list. "Cholesterol Down" does not list "Cholestoff" as a specific item in their 10 steps-. It does however list Plant Sterols/stanols (which is margarine or other phytosterol containing food or 3 capsules at 2 meals) I am sure there are other phytosterol capsules other than"cholestoff" available. If you took Cholesteroff ..you made a good choice.

Congratulations on reducing your cholesterol. Statins are NOT the way to go. I have read the book and recommend it to many. I 'try' to do everything everyday, but am not very successful with it. I do a lot of it each day, but not all. I guess i should get back on track and really make a difference in my life. Thanks for the gentle nudge.. emoticon

You must read the book Cholesterol Down by Janet Bond Brill, Ph.D, R.D,. LDN. There are 10 things you can do every day to naturally lower your cholesterol. I can't stress enough to check with your doctor first before going off any medication. There are 10 things you need to do: 1. eat oatmeal everyday, 2. eat almonds everyday, 3. eat an apple a day (keeps the dr. away!) 4. eat beans every day, 5. Take flaxseed oil, 6. Take or eat garlic, 7. take or eat soy, 8. take Cholestoff, 9. take metamucil twice a day and last, but definitely not least, walk at least 30 minutes everyday. I made myself an excel spreadsheet to track these 10 items everyday. I added one or two items to my diet everyday until I was doing everything. Took me about two weeks to get up to speed, and it was hard at first, but now it is easy. I still use my spreadsheet everyday to keep me on track. If anyone wants a copy of my spreadsheet, email me at robynrhutchins@hotmail.com and I will send it to you. Put Sparkpeople in the subject so I don't think you are junk mail! Anyone feel free to email me with any questions. I am so happy and excited that this is working that I want to share with everyone!

I have that book sitting on my kitchen table - borrowed it from the library - I have looked thru it, but not gotten to the point of reading the plan.

I am currently on Lipitor and will be checked in about 1-2 weeks, if my #'s are down I will discuss w/the dr going off the meds and back on RYR.

Is that plan difficult to follow? Like I said I have not gotten that far. Would love more info about it.

Thanks.

Irene

Woo hoo! I am so excited. I went to the dr today after being off my cholesterol medicine for two months. It was giving me severe muscle pains. I put myself on a special diet that I learned about from a book called Cholesterol Down where you eat certian food and take certain vitamins every day. My cholesterol was 255 and now it is 191! My dr was really impressed. He wants to check me again in three months to see if I can stick with it. I can because I don't want to go back on the medication and I don't want to die young because of high cholesterol. Let me know if anyone wants more info on this diet. I highly recommend it, but as always, check with your dr before going off medication or trying a new diet.
