Lowering your cholesterol 'naturally' uses diet change and exercise. Lowering your weight by as little as 10% will have a noticeable effect on your numbers. Basically, the closer you get to your ideal weight the lower your numbers will be. And not only that, but you will FEEL better, too. Using the nutrition tracker and the Fitness tracker, both here on SP, will help you to manage both and you can easily see what is happening every day. You want to lower the amount of animal fats that you eat and increase the beneficial fats. The fats found in avocado's, cold ocean fish (Salmon, sardines, etc) and olive oil will actually help you to lower LDL cholesterol and over time will begin to clean out your clogged arteries. Adding some fiber to your diet also helps. Adding exercise is easy, too. I mostly just walk, with some resistance reps added from time to time. This alone has allowed me to lose over 40 pounds in the past year. No heavy routines, nothing too strenuous, just slow and steady. I walk 3 miles a day, sometimes 6, four days a week as a rule. I have 40 more pounds to lose and if it takes me another year, that's fine. I just wish I could get my wife to start losing some. She wants to, but there are foods that she WILL NOT give up, such cheese and ice cream. I told her, she doesn't have to give them up completely, just cut back on the portions. That is the secret, portion control. You can eat anything you want, just don't eat too much of it. If you give up things you love, you will crave them and eventually you will go off the plan. Watch calories, watch fats and eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. Less meat, but watch the protein, too.

Taking statins is a gamble. Over time it will affect all of your organs, including your brain. You will start having muscle pains, due to the lack of the co-Q10 enzymes. You need a supplement for that. As your brain function deteriorates it affects your judgement. I believe that these drugs should be pulled off the market, except for limited extreme cases.

You can do it! You are the one who is in charge of your body and your health. The doctors are there to help us, not dictate to us. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

My cholesterol shot from 190 to 345 after I went thru menopause. My eating habits didn't change, but I suspected it would happen because my father has always had exceptionally high cholesterol. I successfully took statins for a few years, but in the past year I started getting pretty severe muscle pain. I finally stopped taking statins and am trying to lower my cholesterol "naturally", whatever that is.

Thanks, Tammy. It was a long time ago, now. My family is now long gone, too. I joke that I am now an orphan, at 69. I was only 5 when my sister died; she was only 3.

This is so very true. When I was a kid I heard adults joking that doctors bury their mistakes. This was WAY before the time of malpractice insurance and lawsuits. My little sister died after being treated for diptheria and given too much antibiotics, so we knew about that. It was unheard of to sue the doctor or the hospital. Doctors were like kings, then.

It blows my mind that Dad feels that way on this one. He is the one I learned to question from. I appreciate my doctor a lot and value his opinion, but I don't always do what he tells me to do. I also do things he SHOULD have told me to do, but never did. He only knows what he knows, just like any doctor. They don't know EVERYTHING about every medical topic. It is not to insult doctors at all, but we have to be our own best advocates!

It can't hurt! The more we know the healther we are.

About the only pople who NEED statins are those who have high levels of cholesterol and it's hereditary. The rest of us can improve our numbers through diet and exercise. A lot of people have a hard time getting the exercise, due to other problems, so there can be other reasons for taking them. But in far too many cases it's just easier for the doctor to prescribe statins, at the maximum dosage. My numbers aren't that bad so I told my doctor 'no way' when he prescribed them for me. I mean, I don't HAVE to buy them just because he prescribes them. My numbers are improving slowly, so we'll see.

Good luck with your dad. Many people, though, just trust their doctor to always be right, but doctors are only human. They are not all-knowing nor are they always right.

I just copied and pasted your response into an email to my dad. If he won't listen to me JUST about doing some research maybe he will listen to you. :) It may come out that he absolutely has to have them, but I just want him to be educated.

The whole thing has always scared me. My dad had a massive heart attack 8 years ago and they immediately put him on chol. meds. even though his cholesterol had never been high! He has taken them ever since. He knows I am the biggest nag he has about going to the doctor, taking his meds, and all of that, but for some reason he just stares at me blankly when I talk to him about finding out more about the meds he is on for cholesterol and seeing if he really fits the category of REALLY needing them.

Hi Tammie. Just type statins into your search engine (Google or Yahoo) and you will find all sorts of information. These things are bad news from the get go. Sometimes, there is no choice but to take them an d then you want to make sure you are getting the Co Q10 enzymes. The statins suppress this important nutrient that your heart, live and your BRAIN need to stay healthy. Many elderly people in nursing homes are being given statins and they also suffer from dementia and other cognitive disorders, probably caused by the statins! No one is doing anything about it because everyone thinks they go in there to die, anyway. It's really sad. That's why we all have to be proactive about our own health. No one knows our bodies better than we do.

Another place you look for information is here:

www.medicationsense.com/statin_drugs
_b
ook.html

An excerpt:

"For statin users, Dr. Cohen dispenses information that most doctors and patients have never seen. Statin drugs are the top-selling drug group in America, and Dr. Cohen emphasizes a "precision-prescribing" method of matching statin drugs and doses for each person. In contrast to drug-company studies that are swaying doctors to use the strongest doses of the strongest statins, Dr. Cohen explains who needs aggressive treatment and who doesn't (most people), and he provides little-known information about safer, proven-effective statin doses that are even lower than those currently marketed."

We are only seeing the tip of the iceberg of statins.

Be aware and be healthy.

Thank you so much for the info. I denied my dr. when he wanted to prescribe meds for my chol and so far have done well without them. I am TIRED of my overweight, unhealthy relatives bragging about their lower numbers when they are taking meds. I don't have the research as to why these meds are bad beyond the stories I have heard on here. I wouldn't mind having some backup when I get called on it next time.

I would have to wonder, too. Your numbers are pretty good already. I think that diet would give better results, without the risks of statins. There is a product that a lot of people are trying and raving about. It's called Cholestoff, and it is a natural product, called phytosterols. It doesn't do much for the trigs, but then yours are ok now. It does help the HDL and LDL. Don't take it if you are on statins, tho. Walmart and Walgreens both carry it. Otherwise, a good diet along with reducing your weight and upping the exercise will all go a long way toward a healthier you. Let your doctor know that you would rather try using nutrition and exercise instead of drugs, if possible.

Good luck.

Good articles. My dr prescribes lovastatin for me about 8 months ago. My total count was 180 ldl and 57 hdl and normal triglycerides. It is my understanding that if the trig are normal and hdl is high why did he give them to me emoticon . The only reason I take them is because my mom and my BF had a fit when I said I wasn't. I am supposed to take 40mg a day(2 tablets) I take 1 tablet every other day. Next month I go back for blood work. It should be interesting because I've lost 25 pounds since the last ones were done.

I totally agree with you regarding being proactive in our health and not depending on blind faith in our doctors. I refused statins when told to take them and have controlled my cholesterol by diet, exercise and natural supplements. I continue to search, learn and experiment and find what works for me. I appreciate your sharing the information you have found. It all works together. emoticon emoticon emoticon Diana

I have high cholesterol, so I look for non-drug ways to improve it, including through diet. One thing I've found is that taking statins is NOT the best plan, not as currently prescribed by doctors.

There are some really good books out there on this subject. One doctor I have found is Jay Cohen, a doctor at the University of California at San Diego. He has had at least two books of interest to us here. One of them is OVERDOSE, about doctors over-prescribing medications and how to figure out the correct dosage for anyone. His main concern here is that women and the elderly are being given dosages that are much too high for them. The drug companies promote the maximum dose and the doctors just go along with it. In some cases, such as statins, this can (and has) caused liver failure and even cancer! It needs to be looked into. The other book is "WHAT YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT STATIN DRUGS AND THEIR NATURAL ALTERNATIVES" He gives the ideal dosage and even alternative treatments.

A lot of people ask questions, such as, what alternative treatments are there for high blood pressure, or high cholesterol, etc. Dr Cohen is an excellent source. He is not some whacked out quack, he has been researching these questions for over 30 years and has dealt with the FDA on it. I recommend anyone who has these conditions to read up on it, and decide for yourself. We must be proactive about our health and not just rely on blind faith in our doctors.

There is a lot of good information at medicinesense.com. All of the work is fully annotated with references. I have no affiliation with this, or any other, medical organization. I only hope that we all can become better informed and better able to manage our health issues.
