Good Fats (HDL) lower bad (LDL) cholesterol. Literally!! That's why a high HDL is considered preventative. Almonds definately fall in this category. I eat 1 oz. per day. They are also good for diabetics as well. My Dad is diabetic and he eats nuts as well.

I do have high BP, so I buy my almonds raw, in bulk, at a grocery chain called Winco. They sell them whole, sliced, or slivered and you can take them home and toast them on a cookie sheet in your own oven if you like them that way. I find I prefer them raw! sunflower seeds too, raw, great on salads...

Even though I live where I am outdoors all year - except during hurricane season - don't think the SOB is related to pollen as it occurs indoors as well.

Will see what happens Friday. Thanks for your suggestions and concern.

It is possible that the SOB was not from the Cholestoff-Complete, interestingly when I contacted the mfgr and told them about it, they sent me a prepaid return label and refunded my complete purchase price even though the bottle was at least 1/2 empty. That to me, was good business practice.

Have an awesome day.

OOPS,
I also heard that COQ10 is good for arthritis, so if you have any tendency toward that, it might help also. I THINK it also keeps the brain in good shape. (so I continue to take it) I don't think the Cholestoff would bring on shortness of breath, but better to be safe. Could it be pollens?

I hope your new dr is someone you can trust and will work with you. Good luck. Looking forward to good news from you in the near future.

Hi - I stopped taking the Cholestoff-Complete - not sure if it caused the shortness of breath I am experiencing, but it started about 2-3 weeks after I started taking it, so I felt it was a good idea to stop. I recently started taking Coq 10 again and feeling a little better. I have a (new) Dr. appt for Fri. morning.

I don't believe we have the "self-directed" tests. I can go directly to the lab but need an RX. A friend of mine went to the lab and had to wait over an hour for them to draw the blood. The Dr. I used had 1 hr any morning to draw blood for testing, the trip there is 40-45 minutes, not worth it, that's why I am changing Dr. Several years ago, I would give blood every 6-8 weeks and then the bloodcenter would send me a report that gave my total cholesterol.

thanks for that bit of research. Have you come up with a new doctor yet, so you can get your current numbers? I am trying the CholestOff=Complete, we'll see what happens. Thanks for that note as well.

Have a great day.

Just a note.. In California we can get "self directed tests for Cholesterol, at some labs without a doctors Rx. Do they have that in Florida?

Note to those with high blood pressure: you may want to eat unsalted natural almonds rather than all the salted varieties.

When you click on "my Nutrition" and then "add a food" you may need to try variations of the word, example oranges (rather than orange), ground beef (rather than hamburger), red ripe tomatoes (as opposed to tomato), etc Good luck with all your goals, Mandy

Just to let you know, the number of calories in 12 almonds is 82 calories. I eat 12 per day and that is what Sparks shows me as the calorie intake.

Hi, I'm back~
And silly me~ I didn't think to just save the links for you! Sorry...

Anyway, here's what I found out:

Turns out almonds come in two varieties. The kind that extracts are made from are known as 'bitter almonds' and they do contain small but signifigant amounts of arsenic, as do lima beans and a number of other nuts and seeds we normally eat (especially pistachios~whoa!)

The study I looked at listed the nuts in which none was found, and they are as follows:

almonds (the regular kind! LOL)
peanuts
pine nuts
sunflower seeds
walnuts

Another study said that you should consume one almond a day per 10 pounds of body weight~ more if you want to gain weight, less if you wish to lose.

There it is, in a nutshell... sorry... couldn't resist.

Kathy emoticon

P.S. Did you know a common beverage called orgeat (made with bitter almonds and oranges) was used to administer larger and larger doses to Napoleon to undermine his health during the Waterloo campaign? Once he was back on Alba, they finished the job by adding it to his special wine, (he's the only one who drank it, it was private stock) to make it look like he died of natural causes... Naughty!

Cherie, are you sure about the arsenic?

I was in a play in high school, called 'Arsenic and Old Lace,' I played kone of a pair of little old sisters who poisoned lonely old widowers so they could 'be at peace.' ... Putting them out of their misery. It's a comedy, was a movie with~ was it Rock Hudson? ooh, can't remember... anyway, I did some research back then.

Arsenic smells like almonds, and is very sneaky. In large doses, death is immediate... but it can be administered in small amounts over a long period of time and your body stores it up until it reaches toxic levels~ and then you die.

I know almonds are related to peaches, and peach pits used to be used for a drink (specifically for the ladies, it was called 'ratafia') back in the Regency period! Peach pits DO have arsenic, but I thought that the almonds didn't... seems to me the arsenic would have built up in people so a lot of us would be dead by now...HM (Glad we're not!) LOL

I think I'll go 'google' this... love that odd word, wonder where it comes from...*giggle*

I'll let you know what I find out...

Most of the site that mention that Almonds are good for your clearly say that they are very fattening they should be limited to 10-12 per day, which I think one website said that 10-12 is about 240 calories...or was it walnuts!!!

I love almonds, but be careful, they are high calorie and have arsenic in them so moderation is the key! I think it is better to eat a variety of mixed nuts. Hugs to my team, Cherie

Almonds, walnuts, pistachios--all are beneficial for raising your HDL levels. Just be careful! Nuts are packed with calories, so check portion sizes: just don't "guesstimate!"

I've heard that they are good for you - good fats - but not heard anything about lowering the LDL.

Would be very interested in knowing the results of your test to see if they helped.

Welcome to the team. I haven't had mine checked in months so I couldn't keep track and know. I don't eat that many each day but do have some here and there.

Water is very important for us. We may, and I do, require more than the 8 glasses a day. The link goes to a water calculator I use to see what I need for my current weight. Mt requirement has dropped 9 ounces due to weight loss. Yipee!
