Juicing removes the fiber with a juicer. Smoothies retain the fiber and simply use a blender.

Has anyone heard of Dr. Esselstyn, from the docu/movie " Forks Over Knives?" His website is heartattackproof.com. He has many years experience and research on real people that were basically had less than year to live due to heart disease. Anyway, he put them on his restrictive diet, that basically has only fruits and vegetables (except no avocado). No meat, fish, chicken. Absolutely NO OIL of any kind. No nuts, either. Anyway, this was about 25 years ago, and those people, that were given a death sentence of less than a year, are now still living. His book is
Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. Just wondered if anyone else heard of this? I'm going to try it and I did order the book. I was eating alot of avocadoes and nuts, lol.

There's people for and against it. You have to study up on it and decide for yourself. We started it when my husband got diagnosed with lung cancer. It certainly did not hurt in that he went through surgery, chemo and radiation with flying colors - never getting tired or sick. Here's a gal that's a real cheerleader for it. She's a cancer survivor and has a few books out. I love her attitude: http://crazysexylife.com/about/

Someone else can probably list the scientific benefits better than I can. I just know it makes me feel great. BTW, we eat the extracted pull for the fiber.

Hi Hulk551,
We've been juicing for about 5 months now. My husband has been dealing with cancer since October. We're about to purchase an Omega 8004 masticating juicer. Do you have a juicer yet, and if so, which one? I'd love to talk juicing with you. I've got high cholesterol and am determined not to get stuck taking a statin for the rest of my life, so I'm willing to do what ever it takes.

My breakfast recipe - 1 small yogurt (whatever flavor) + 1/2 or 1 fruit (depends on the fruit) example 1 peach but usually only 1/2 banana... + milk (amount that you prefer)

I put it all in the blender for my morning smoothie! Works well as a snack too and the grandkids LOVE it!

I found and joined the Stay Healthy The Vegie Way team and joined. It has many recipes for vegetarian, juicing, smoothies and more. It's been very helpful in my consumption of fruits and vegies. You can also go to Eating Well Magazine on line and you'll find more there. Good luck to you in your journey to health and fitness.

BRADIA, Your fruit salad sounds wonderful! I'll be making it today just need to buy some tropical fruits and I'll be set for the next 10 days. This recipe can be as different as the choice of fruits. I see a lot of variations.

it is only a tablespoon of sugar and when you finish your salad and/or cocktail, the result is around 16 ccups of fruit, that is why it lasts so long without goind stale. so no, the sugar divides into so many portions is not that bad. you can always put everything in the recipe calculator and you have a complete teardown of nutrients.

Doesn't all that sugar make it high in calories though? So many conflicting things to watch as we try to get healthy sure makes the process difficult!

I make a fruit cocktail that will last me more than ten days without going bad. I will just chop around 12 different fruits, including fresh strawberries and bananas, two different kinds of apples, cantaloupe, guavas, mango, papaya, peaches, pineaple, and then mix the juice of three limes, two oranges, one tbs of sugar and a tsp of salt and that is the perfect antioxidant when it is added to all the fruit. I keep in in a tight containaer and from there measure my cups I eat the following ten days. It is delifcious and the work was done at once.
have you all a blessed sunday

I love fruit and veggies but I have always had trouble keeping them fresh. So I tryied these things and it has helped me keep my veggies and fruit fresh. I thought you might like this information.

Storing Bananas
Let them ripen on the counter, or if you want them to ripen faster, put them in a paper bag. When they are ripe, if you're not eating them right away, put them into the refrigerator and they will be okay for about 2 weeks.

Vegetable Crisper Hint
To keep vegetables fresh, put a dry sponge in the crisper to help absorb a buildup of moisture. Also, wipe up debris and wipe out dampness frequently.

Keeping Vegetables Fresh
When you put celery sticks or carrots into a zipper bag, add an ice cube or piece of wet paper towel. That will keep them moist and fresh.
I didn't think putting a damp cloth in with the veggies but it works.

I would say that on average I get 6 fruits and vegetables a day. Sometimes on the weekends it is a little less but always at least 4!

What's really ironic about this topic is before I started taking this seriously I maybe got one or two fruits and vegetables combined a day. I have made a real effort to get them all in and have done real good. Average between 5 and 9 a day. Now my daughter is eating a bunch of fruits and vegetables. She loves broccolli, carrots, raisins, natural applesauce with cinnamon (not sugar). So because of all my health issues my whole family is eating healthier even my husband.

Fruits is never a problem with me. I did not think veggies were either until I read that you have 1 eat 1 C raw for it to be considered a serving - now it has been a problem ;-)

Fruits come easier to me on a daily basis but only really eating maybe one or two servings of vegees daily so needs improvement and getting at least three to five fruits a day...

I love fruit. I get grapes, put them in a plastic baggie, and freeze them. I'll do this with other seasonal fruits that freeze well too, such as peaches, watermelon, cantalope and honeydew melons. So delish. Very refreshing. I even have my boss at work hooked on frozen grapes! He always snags a handful when I bring them into work.

I have fruit every day. I take a dessert cup and layer fruit and yogurt. I use the dessert cups with lids and have it later. I am making jell-o today and putting fruit cocktail in it. You can put veggies in the jello too. So enjoy

Some days they are easy others they are not - I find the days when I am really busy and don't cook like I should I only get 3 or 4 a day - those days I try to do fruits as a snack. Otherwise I would really be doing badly.

It was good to find out that my grandchildren like to have lots of raw vegetables before dinner--takes the hungry edge off and keeps us all busy while the cooking is smelling so good.

Fruits and veges ar not a problem for me. Especially the veges. I have a minimum of 5 servings combined each day. My record is 10 per day. This is even easier when the fresh garden veges start ripening.

I like most fruits and veggies. I find I can get in 3 a day, but it's hard to get in more than 3. I try to make my snacks a fruit or veggie. For example, my morning snack was an apple and a peice of cheese. My afternoon snack is a single serve bag of baby carrots and yogurt. I am having broccoli with lunch, so there I will get 3 in today.

Got the best red grapes at the store. Really crisp and flavorful. Also some sparkling snow peas and brilliant red peppers.

Hey, thanks everybody for your comments. Great ideas. I not a huge fan of green salads, but I shall give it a try with all of the extras you mention. Had my 3 yr. physical this morning and I'm doing better, I know. Don't have lab and other test results yet, but will deal with them as needed. One for sure, I do feel SO MUCH better since beginning this program 3.5 weeks ago.

Try the bagged salads in your grocery store - it's easy to meet your goals by eating the whole bag - either at one sitting, or dividing into lunch and dinner. Try mixing in some sliced apples, almonds, orange slices, etc to get your fruit as well. It's amazing how full you'll feel once you ingest all of the veggies & fruit this way.

HI, I don't think I have posted here before but I like your discussion. This will be week 4 for me in Spark and I have been very impressed and motivated. Seeing results of the labors, too. Anyway, I am still having trouble getting at least 3 servings of veggies/fruits daily. Don't really know why.
Hoping your day is good,
Jany

Eating a diet high in veggies and fruit, lean protien and cutting back or elimating sugar and refined foods will help get those triglycerides down. Combine that with a good exercise program can't hurt either.

I'm new to the Spark program, and just thought I should check in with the rest of you. I was told by my doctor that I should take a statin because I am pre-diabetic. Although my sugar tests seem to be good. I was given a glucose test back several years ago. I really believe the test results were wrong.
But anyway, my cholesterol is usually reasonable but triglycerides are always too high! So does anyone have any answers? As far as my eating habits, I really like salads but must admit I like protein also.I buy lean burger, round 12%, I also eat chicken, no longer fried but grilled or baked, using seasonings.I rarely eat ham, but really like bacon, but only eat 2 slices about twice a week. If I eat only salads and fruits I don't seem to have any energy!
PS I am now taking fish oil tablets, and am trying to eat a little fish, I don't like fish!!!!!

I agree with eating salads as a great way to manage carbs. I eat only high fiber veggies and grains and it absolutely helps! emoticon

Also...I rarely get hungry and don't seem to have cravings.

Thanks for such a good list. My problem is that I have ibs-d and the fresh stuff kills me. I can't eat anything raw or with a peel. I pretty much eat only carbs because the dairy and meats (any fat at all) gets me going, too. You'd think I would lose weight, wouldn't you? It's hard to eat a balanced meal with ibs, osteoporosis, high cholesterol and now hot flashes to deal with. Smile and deal with it!

My carbs come from vegetables. I eat a big salad and a small one just about everyday. Then some meats have a small amount of carbs. Splenda has a little carbs as do tea and coffee and some cheeses. Flax meal does too but a lot of it is fiber which is a great thing. emoticon

Thanks Nancy ... I think my taste buds are complaining more than anything, but I will adjust. I am confident that I am getting enough protein as I eat lots of fish, legumes, chickpeas etc. Calcium wise I do supp caltrax and still have skim milk. I really appreciate your comments, thanks so much.

I can't do a no carb diet. I do however do a low carb lifestyle and have done reasonably well on it. There are some low carb teams here that are very supportive if you choose to go that way.

You really do need at least the minimium amount of protein or yes you are going to feel like you are starving. Eggs are good for you just don't use the yolk. If you are cutting dairy and cheese you need to supplement with a good calcium tablet. Check with your doctor first.

I am on meds and have been for a long time eventhough only 48. Just this month started to supp CoQ10. As high level medication is not lowering my cholesterol (fortunately I have High HDL and low LDL)I am frustrated and 3 weeks ago decided to completely eliminate meat (x fish), cheese, eggs, dairy (x skim milk). I am also trying to limit bread for weight loss reasons. The list is fabulous but does anyone have any ideas how to satisfy my craving for savoury snacks. I am not a sweets eater and am finding salads so light weight and fruits too sweet. Help ... I feel like there is nothing in the house that I can eat!
