Speaking of good fats, I've learned that, for me, a misto or any spray mist-er is essential for cooking with olive oil. I tend to revert to old, bad habits with portion control and have found, to my surprise, that enough is better than too much when it comes to oil, even the healthful ones.

The best snack is like a mini-meal, so if you prepare any dish that is balanced for your needed protein/carb/fat ratio, you can just eat or prepare something that's about 1/4 to 1/3 the amount you'd eat for a regular meal.

The protein shakes are a good idea, as is having some yogurt or cottage cheese, because you can combine different fruits and change them up to keep it interesting. You can also try adding some vanilla or almond extract to the shakes to make a little taste change.

One more thing: If you are using non-fat milk, yogurt, or cottage cheese make sure you add just a pinch of "good" fat back to the snack, such as a teaspoon of almond or cashew butter to the shake or a sprinkle of toasted almonds in the yogurt or cottage cheese. That will balance the nutrients and you should be able to make it to your next meal without feeling hungry.

Hope that helps!

I find hummus in or near the deli. It is near the specialty cheeses such as Brie. I am one who dislikes plain but enjoy the flavors. I've never tried making homemade.

Actually, the A&P is a bit more pricey here than any other supermarket in this area...although many of their items have and continue to be lowered in price. When they have specials, however, BOY, can I save money!
We're really fortunate here in Middlesex county, NJ. Lots of variety, lots of choices...AND, in the summer and harvest time, you can't beat Jersey produce! A farm stand every other corner, in some parts.

They had too much competition in Havertown. Are there normal prices still pretty much lower than most supermarkets? I used to love them and Acme. Acme is the sister market of one that we used to have out here Alpha-Beta. In fact, my Church is where Alpha-Beta used to be. Too funny. emoticon

Not only "existing," but thriving here. I go to just about every sale in every supermarket but for fresh seafood and produce, the local A&P is tops.
Thinking of you earlier today: I just had plain Sabra hummus so I doctored it up with lemon zest and juice--what a kick!

I buy my Sabra flavored hummus in Sam's clubs because they have larger containers for a reduced price, but I've found Sabra brand in Pathmark and A & P stores as well as Shoprite supermarkets. Each store has them in a different aisle so I recommend asking at the courtesy counter of your local supermarket. Also, go to Sabra.com and click on their store locator. It's a fun site, too!

Hummus IS made with chickpeas. Sorry about the confusion, but it comes in "flavors" with the addition of other food: garlic, roasted red pepper, lemon, olives, etc.
But, unless there's something calling itself "hummus" out there that ISN'T made with chickpeas, I think you're out of luck!
Some people don't like plain hummus but enjoy the flavored ones. I think my favorite is lemon...

Hey guys, on the hummus. Where can I get it in different flavors. I have only seen recipes for it with chickpeas and them I don't like. Thank you.

With the peanut butter I just get the peanut butter and spoon and grab some and eat it. I figure it's better than w/bread. Maybe I'll try the celery. Thanks again. emoticon

Lisa, I use the same thing (whey protein and chocolate). On Thursday I went back to Wal-Mart to get some more and I opened it up took the seal off and there was little specks of white in it so I took it back and got another one on Friday. The same thing happened. I got there e-mail address and told them about the problem. I even told them that I would send a sample to them. It was in the whole container. I picked up a couple pieces and I could crush them into little little pieces.

I used one scoop of it tonight in the same juice I have always used for it and it tasted weired. I can't wait until Monday to get an answer. emoticon

(while not really 'on the go', i checked out 'the south beach diet quick and easy cookbook' from the library today. i made the 'creamy dreamy strawberry vanilla shake'. it's pretty good. i'm craving something sweet and while i wish this was truly sweet, it's a reasonable consolation prize. i used non-fat yogurt and non-fat milk to reduce the fat.)

Creamy Dreamy Strawberry Vanilla Shake

Prep time: 5 minutes

Frozen strawberries work like ice cubes to thicken and chill this irresistibly creamy shake. Since the berries are available year-round, you can enjoy it anytime.

1 cup plain fat-free or low-fat yogurt
1 cup 1 percent milk
2 cups frozen strawberries
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Puree yogurt, milk, strawberries, and vanilla in a blender until smooth. Serve cold.

Makes 4 (1-cup) servings

Karyl - you might want to try adding some walnuts, almonds or Brazil nuts to your diet (heart healthy nuts), fresh veggies are also excellent as are fresh fruits, wheatgerm and flaxseed, whole grain breads and cereals, and beans. Things like bran muffins are great and also taste yummy - I add some raisins to increase the level of fiber.

This is a starting list and I'm sure other people will add to it.

I've noticed that adding flax adds fiber but I still need to improve on the amount of fiber I get too. I'm going to have to work on that...suggestions welcome!

I have a Laughing Cow Light wedge spread on a multigrain cracker, such as Wasa or RyKrisp Seasoned. Or sometimes I'll spread lemon garlic (the ONLY brand I buy now, if I don't have homemade, is Sabra. Expensive but I'm worth it!)or garlic or another flavor hummus. I find that the crunch of the cracker, or a really crisp apple or veggie, helps satisfy the craving to CHEW.
And if you haven't tried PB on a nice crisp apple, you ain't lived! LOL...

Lilhlfpnt ~ I am also doing the protein shakes, I get the Whey Protein, I buy it at Walmart for $14.00. I also get the chocolate and I have noticed that I am not as hungry. I also add a tsp of Nestles sugar free chocolate and a tbsp of Flaxseed meal. I add the Nestles because the protein powder has a little after taste and that helps. I also snack on Dannon Light N Fit yogurt and the Low Fat Motzerella sticks. I like to eat them along with celery sticks.

Blessings to all .. Lisa

I just recently rediscovered peanut butter and celery. When I had a daycare we had that for snack sometimes. Celery or any veggies with hummus is good too. Just check out the different flavors: my favorites are roasted pepper or garlic but there are many more. The first time I tried hummus I disliked it but found out that I just don't care for plain.

Mary, I usually eat yogurt or a 100 calorie pudding if I am not eating fruit.
Smashy thanks for the info on Metamuci and greens to go.

Check out the book "CHOLESTROL DOWN" it highly recommends METAMUCIL, however I have recently discovered flax meal and I add it to my cereal and yogurt, I find it gives me staying power and don't need many snacks.

(jenna, i'll try the brazilian nuts. i think i od'd on the almonds, cashers and peanuts. i can't stand the site of a nut right now. lol.

i also like baked garbanzo beans but i can't allow myself to od on that, too.

carney, i never heard of adding metamucil before. that's interesting.

smashy, thanks for the 'greens to go' recommendation. i'll check that out.)

One thing that I like is a "greens" drink. which is a fruit/veggie that you add to your bottled water. Low carbs, no fat and gives you a lot of benefit from the fruits/veggies in one. Called "Greens to Go" and right now, the only place I have found it is Costco...It is full of antioxidants and delicious.

Since recently being diagnosed with diverticulosis, nuts are now severely limited for me. The doctor told me to increase my fiber...I told him that, short of adding rocks and tree bark, I was about at the limit for human consumption of fibrous foods! He laughed and told me to add Metamucil. I informed him that I take it first thing in the morning and have for a year and a half.
"Well...keep doing what you're doing," he said.
I intend to!

I tend to do the raisins for sweet and either almonds, walnuts or Brazil nuts. Also love fresh veggies with some dip - yummy! Yogurt would also work if you are not vegan!

(what low carb/fat snacks do you guys rely on for when you're on the go?

i'm so used to grabbing a fruit and now that i'm having to watch my carbs, i'm feeling a little lost.

i know nuts are a good choice but i'm getting really bored/tired of nuts.

i just started doing the protein shakes this week. i didn't like the ready-made one i tried but a coworker suggested it try optimum nutrition's 100% whey gold standard double chocolate powder and that stuff was pretty good when i mixed it with milk. it was almost as good as chocolate milk.)
