Hey Debbie,

Thanks for the update & bumping the thread. You'll get back into the routine in no time. DH & I started our new program on 12/28 to help make the transition easier into 2011.

Good luck on finding a babysitter. DH, my friend (& one of our drivers) & I are seeing it too. Can't wait!

Hi everyone... I figured I'd bring our thread up to the current month. I'm back in the saddle and trying to get back into a regular routine. I haven't been consistent and I need to get back to it.

I'm also trying to find a babysitter for the 11th when my husband and I have tickets to go see the Hood To Coast movie! I can't wait!

Cool that worked. I just entered Coasties and Ghosties, found the team, joined it, and chose the individual option for my page. I made a donation and see that it shows up on my personal page and the team's as well. cool.

I've created a C&G team fundraising page through the ACS DetermiNation site. You can join our team as an individual participant. Here's the website:

determination.acsevents.org/site/TR?
fr
_id=34233&pg=entry

You can create a personal page to share your story, blogs, videos, & a pic. I'm still learning how to use the site but if you've got any questions, I'm sure we can figure it out.

People can donate to an individual or make a general team donation.

After losing my stepmother to lung cancer over the summer I'm very much in and planned on fundraising for this one no matter what.

How does it work? Do they give you a donation site where people can donate? Or do you have to collect checks yourself?

The American Cancer Society is a charity my husband and I give to each year. My stepmother wasn't a smoker, more and more non-smokers are dying from lung cancer these days - scary! But so many people don't give to lung cancer research since they feel lung cancer is a self-inflicted cancer. But it's a really deadly form since it's rarely caught in early stages.

I firmly believe in the American Cancer Society and letting them decide where the funds are most needed.

Hey team, got a fundraising question for you.

First, as a team, do you want to raise funds for the American Cancer Society as part of our HTC experience?

Second, if yes, any suggestions on what our team goal should be?

I know Sparkin' HTC raised over $5000 for HTC 2010; as a reminder, $15,000 gets the team an automatic entry for 2012.

So, I'm happy w/ setting the goal as $5,000, which is an average of $416.67/person. If you're a super fundraiser, we can shoot for $15K!

If you'd rather not fundraise, no problem. The last two times I've done HTC my team never did it.

One of the first things I discovered with the Kindle was how many books are available for free. Most of the classics are available free (even through Amazon). And there are already sites dedicated to people who've scanned in various books, converted them to various e-book files, and make them available for free.

And yeah, Cooks Illustrated is all about making recipes hundreds of times, tweaking variables, and coming up with ingenious ways of solving specific problems. They host the "America's Test Kitchen" show on PBS. LOVE it!

And no, I haven't seen Cooking for Engineers, I've read "What Einstein Told His Cook"

The only times I buy books are when I need an easy novel to read on a longer plane ride. To Hawaii I read "Blood Trinity" by Sherrilyn Kenyon & Dianna Love, & on the way back I read "Angel Time" by Anne Rice. I'm not a Koontz or King fan; I tend to be really picky about novels & usually choose non-fiction. One of my goals for this last year before turning 30 is to read 30 books & I've got 5 done already.

I know what you mean! Once I read one I go on a total kick! I haven't read a Koontz in awhile. The last book I read was a James Patterson novel, which wasn't very good. Before that I was on a King kick, read Under the Dome and Hearts in Atlantis, both great reads.

I used to read Koontz books when I was young like they were crack, but I haven't read any of his recent ones. :) You'll have to give ME some suggestions.

Jenny - I just have to say that whenever I see your sparkname, my brain translates it into "tortuga", which means "turtle"in spanish. I recently discovered a passion for sea turtles so that's a little nerdy tidbit for your Sunday.

I had no idea Cooks Illustrated was science-y. I'll have to check that out. Have you ever gone to the website CookingForEngineers.com? It's fun in a nerdy way.

Call me old school but I can't get excited about e-readers. There's just something about the tactile sensation of turning pages that's satisfying lol.

Though, unfortunately, right now the most time I spend "reading" is in my car listening to audio books. I have a 2 hour daily commute, so I go through a lot of them. I forget to count them as reading since I'm not the one thumbing through the pages, but I guess it counts. I have a subscription to Simply Audio Books. It's like Netflix for audio books. If I bought all the books I listen to it would cost me a fortune.

I'm going to post my 10 things and THEN read everyone else's... I don't want to change what I would have written based on everyone else's cool ideas.

1. I ran my first 5K road race with my father at the age of 8 (1979 - back when kids weren't common in races, especially not girls). Running with my father are some of my best memories. It makes me sad that dad can't run anymore (but he mountain bikes, lifts weights, etc.) because it means I can never go for a run with him again. But it makes me thankful I still can run.

2. I am the biggest fan of Cooks Illustrated - the scientific approach to cooking

3. I am extremely organized. I'm the ultimate planner. But my house is a mess.

4. I've been marching steadily up the corporate ladder, but it has been against my will and I can't wait until we're in a position where I can quit and teach business classes part time in my town (at either the local jr college or one of the universities with classes near me.)

5. When I was in college in San Diego I'd pick a weekend for a race, look at the logos for the races happening that weekend, and then pick the one with the coolest logo for the coolest shirt.

6. I decided I was going to major in Spanish and join the Air Force when I was in 9th grade and realized that most artists starve... ;-) No one but my father believed I was really going to go through with it.

7. I wanted my son to be a daughter and my daughter to be a son! Glad I didn't get what I wanted. They're exactly what I needed.

8. I'd moved 18 times by the time I was 30 (avg of a move every 1.67 years.) My husband and I bought a house in 2001 and have been here ever since. The other day my son asked when we were going to move since his friends were and he wanted to too. My answer was, "you can move when you go to college!"

9. I met my husband in Korea

10. I didn't learn to ski until I was in Korea and went with DH (1996) and really got into it a year later. My kids learned last year (at 3 and 5), and it was really cute. They can't wait to hit the slopes this year.

1. Please, call me Jenny. Only my mom calls me Jennifer. (you know - moms and the "given name" thing)

2. I am enamoured with all of you already because you seem to like to read. I read about a book a week - any subject will do.

3. I've been running for just about 3 years. I've done lots of 5ks, 2 half marathons and even had one fairly serious injury, which I'm still recovering from.

4. I have lost and maintained a total of roughly 50 lbs since 2006 through a combination of WW and SP. I hope to bump that number up in the near future.

5. I love being outside and I love to camp and kayak. You can keep your beaches and margaritas. My ideal vacation involves a lake in a quiet woods, a tent and no signs of human life for 30 miles around me.

6. Speaking of the outdoors, in 2009 my beau and I hiked Half Dome at Yosemite. Not being a big fan of heights, it was the most difficult thing I've ever done and it is one of the things I'm most proud of. After that, there is NOTHING that I can't do.

7. I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't eat anything that comes from a pig. That's just a personal choice. I'm allergic to pineapple, but sometimes I eat it anyway because it's so darn tasty. (Consequently, I'm generally miserable for days afterwards)

8. I live in Wisconsin and I LOVE winter! I love cold. I love snow. I love hot chocolate and sweaters and mittens. I run outside all winter long unless the temperature is below zero. On the flip side, I really don't like summer. I hate being hot.

9. In 2003, I lived in Paris for 9 months. I still miss it every day. I also still speak a decent amount of French.

10. I've been dating my beau for nearly 10 years. And no, we don't have any immediate plans to get married. You know how the saying goes - if it ain't broke....

I love to see fellow readers, this is great!

(I'm Stephanie)

1. I am married with no kids and no plans for them.

2. I am currently taking classes in fitness instruction & exercise science to become certified as...something.

3. I work full time as a financial analyst, but also work for Weight Watchers on the side (which is really what I love).

4. I have no pets because I'm allergic to everything.

5. I will be spending Christmas with our in-laws in Las Cruces, NM.

6. I've lived my entire life in Southern California (born in L.A. now live in San Diego).

7. I spend far too much time on the internet.

8. I would be a vegetarian 99% of the time if I wasn't married to my husband; since I am, I choose vegetarian dishes 75% of the time. I just don't care for meat that much.

9. My biggest downfall is my sweet tooth. There is nothing too sweet, too rich or too decadent for me. Anyone who says those things is crazy in my eyes. :)

10. I've successfully maintained a 26 pound weight loss since 1997. I would, however, like to get 3-4 vanity pounds off.

4) I enjoy books, but usually only read while on vacation where I typically start and finish 1-3 books.
5) I like kickboxing and kayaking.
6) I lived in Spain for 5 months for study abroad.
7) I'm allergic to cats, but I have two. I get allergy shots every 2 weeks.

Ok, I'm game.

1) I have two retired racing greyhounds. Contrary to popular opinion, they make pretty lousy jogging buddies but my younger one can be good for 3 miles or so.
2) I lived in Maine for 2 years and would love to move back if the economy improves.
3) I'm a book nut. Whenever I get interested in something, I read everything I can on it. And I love murder mysteries.
4) I love everything multimedia. Which means next August all of you will be sick of my camera and laptop because I plan on "live blogging" the whole thing!
5) I've always liked politics, but this past election cycle finally made me sick of them.
6) Like Z, I would love to be a vegetarian (can't see myself going all the way vegan) but I'm having a hard time with the transition.
7) I hate peanut butter.
8) I love long car rides down scenic, windy, 2-lane roads.
9) I'm a writer by trade, but still manage typos in everything I type.
10) I've never done yoga. I'm going Tuesday.
