I forgot to add that the cold rice in a sock alternating with warm rice in a sock on a laboring mom's lower back brings great relief. I don't believe ANY of us will going thru labor (hopefully!) but if you ARE providing support during your dtr's labor, remember it. That's why I had the cold one to begin with in my freezer. I remembered one HOT night that it was there. I had used them during demonstrations when teaching my classes or when I "doula-ed".

Hmmm.... No hot flashes yet, but I have MS and the heat is killing me. I'll have to go buy a long sock and try it. THANKS!

For hot flash relief:

Fill a LONG tube sock with uncooked rice, place in a plastic bag and put in the freezer. It won't freeze. At night when you wake up "flashing", wrap the sock around your neck and go back to bed. It will stay in place without having to be held. You may wake later and be actually chilled. (nice!)

You can also use it during the day by just hanging it around your neck. It leaves your arms free to do whatever and will cool you off in no time. It's inexpensive and effective.

Extra tip: an essential oil like lavender, vanilla, etc. may be sprinkled over the rice so it will add an aromatherapy (& won' smell like the freezer)

Happy Cooling!
Deena
