I finished The Christmas Room, a new romance by Catherine Anderson--very sweet. And I was surprised to have the ebook of the next Amelia Peabody book come in. So I don't need to borrow my sister's pad on which she downloaded her library's ebook for me. (Thanks again, Mary!) So I'm 2 pages into Lord of the Silent (and fading fast!)

Oh, and I'm watching a few of the bonus features on the Nanny McPhee DVD.

Blessed Be, Amanda

I finished He Shall Thunder in the Sky by Elizabeth Peters, and now have to take a break since I want to read them in chronological (not published) order, and my system has no book copies of the next one, Lord of the Silent. I've requested the ebook, but don't know when it will be available. I've also requested an Inter-Library Loan and a purchase, since it's not good to be missing a single title out of a 20-book series! My sister is also checking her system to see if they have a copy available.

Tonight I'm watching Nanny McPhee--rather odd; not sure how much I like it. It's strange to see Emma Thompson looking so unattractive. True, she was quite homely as Professor Trelawney in the Harry Potter movies, but the warts and buck tooth are rather over-the-top. Though the blemishes are disappearing as the children learn their lessons and transform.

Sorry, another teammate pointed out that last link doesn't work. I wonder why? I'll try again for that page and the general site. www.bookseriesinorder.com/am
elia-peabo

for Amelia's page, and the site www.bookseriesinorder.com/ Hope these work!

I'm really glad the Amelia Peabody page not only listed the books in order of publishing, but the chronological order also. Not sure why she started jumping around over more than a decade to the war years, before the war, after the war, before the war. Rather disconcerting. I was planning to leave the newest book until after finishing the last several she published, but found out there are 6 books that take place in later years. So I'll read that soon (plus I read some not so great reviews; evidently the writer who worked from her notes has a much different style). Then I'll read the various titles (some read years ago, some never yet) up to the last chronological one which takes place in 1923--evidently the year King Tut's tomb was discovered. I guess it was a huge find to discover an intact tomb which had not been raided in antiquity.

The Amelia Peabody books are cozy mysteries featuring a female archeologist/Egyptologist, which start in the late 1800s and eventually move into the 1900s, including WWI and the rise of Egyptian nationalism. They are entertaining. I'm not sure who wrote the just-released one, since the original author died a few years ago. As relationships change substantially, it definitely helps to read them in order. I believe the first is The Crocodile on the Sandbank.

Actually here is a link to the series. Are you familiar with the site Books Series in Order? Pretty cool! www.bookseriesinorder.com/am

On the page it talks about the characters and her style, and mentions she was working on the new book when she passed away in 2013.

I just finished the 5th and most recent novel in the Others series by Anne Bishop--tense, disturbing, but ultimately sweet and joyful. Her next one comes out in early March, and is set in the same universe (alternate history), but a different location and characters. Can't wait to return, but I will miss my favorite Wolves, Crows, Bear & Coyote, humans, blood prophets, Intuits, Elementals & Sanguinati.

Next I'll be rereading (or reading for the first time) the last few Amelia Peabody books by Elizabeth Peters before her death. A new one has been released, and I have it on order at the library; may come in soon. It's been some years since I read any of them, so want to get reacquainted.

It's worth getting the Hidden Figures DVD from your library for the extra features on the real Katherine Johnson--who is still alive at 97, who received a Presidential award from Barack Obama, and who was honored by having the center where she worked for NASA named for her. I've started rewatching with the commentary by director and lead actress, who are interesting to listen to so far.

Finished it last night--it was great! And I'm really pleased this DVD has special features. (I was disappointed when Arrival finally came in to check out of the library, with no features at all; it was a fascinating story & I would have enjoyed learning more about the creation of it.) Saw the first, which really delved into the hidden history of these black women and their contributions to the early space race. Looking forward to the other 2, and to checking out the audio commentary to see it one more time before returning it.

Watching Hidden Figures, which finally came in (after starting over 2000th in line), and really enjoying it!

I stayed up late finishing Others book #3, Visions in Silver last night. I think I'll go ahead and reread #4 & 5 before starting back in on the last few Amelia Peabody Egyptian mysteries written before author's death, in preparation for the newly released book in the Elizabeth Peters series, which I've requested from the library. I'm not sure who wrote this one, or if there will be more.

Read Naomi Novik's short story collection set in the Temeraire universe. My favorite was Dragons and Decorum, featuring Captain Elizabeth Bennet & the cast of characters from Pride and Prejudice.

Almost finished with Uprooted which I began today, a fantasy novel by Naomi Novik in a completely different universe, and if anything, even better written (at least not in the early nineteenth century style, and therefore more accessible). I don't know if it will truly end, or if it is the beginning of a new series. Highest recommendation!

I think I'll have to stay up & finish League of Dragons, book #9 tonight. It is so exciting & tense, I'm loving it, but I'll be sad to finish the series. I care so very much for the characters, and will miss them greatly.

Each of the Temeraire novels is divided into three parts. I'm on Part III of book #8. It's so addictive. I care about the human and dragon characters so much and can't wait to learn what happens to them all next!

I finally got one of my DVDs from the library--Passengers, for which I had seen previews at the theater. Not sure how far I am into the movie, but it's rather boring. It set things up pretty quickly, but then his angsty "I'm all alone on this ship for the next 90 years" became rather uninteresting, and now they are dragging out "Should I wake her up or not? Yes. No. Yes. No." Sorry but I'm starting not to care. Not sure if I'll finish it or not. Think I'll go back to my book over dinner.

On Facebook, I found a link listing different books set in medieval times. I saved it to look at later since I enjoy reading such historical fiction books sometimes. Sounds like you’ve enjoyed reading those two books set in that period of time. I finished reading The dark horse by Craig Johnson, a great book set in modern age Wyoming and another book by Elaine Viets. She writes cozy mysteries.

Well, Book #6, which I borrowed from Mary through her county's library system yesterday is already finished. (I think it was a little shorter than the others. Now I'm on to Book #7, Crucible of Gold. I wonder if author Naomi Novik set out originally to take human Lawrence and dragon Temeraire all over the world? The first book is set at sea and in Britain, #2 is mostly in China, #3 has them traveling overland from China to Europe, including spending time in Turkey, #4 takes them to Africa, #5 is back to Europe and Britain, with Napoleon invading England, #6 is in Australia, and now #7 has them going to South America!

Here's the marvelous Wikipedia article on the series: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temera

I guess it's time to request #9; I already have #8 waiting!

I just finished Book #5, Victory of Eagles, both funnier at the beginning and more harrowing by the end with a huge battle between the English and French Forces. I'm curious about the real history of the time, and the exploits and ends of the real Bonaparte, Nelson & Wellington. The story ends on a somewhat sad, yet wide open note for the next book.

I read Dan Brown's DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons, and love the movies too. I love those kinds of thrillers for sure and also cozy mysteries. I haven't gotten into fantasy lately but if I get recommendations, I may read some fantasy stories. Right now I am reading eight books at once (I know, I know) and having fun. Reading is an escape for me and watching good movies.

I haven't tried Preston and Child, though have considered them. Do you read James Rollins? I thoroughly enjoyed Dan Brown's DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons. Rollins does similar work--intelligent political thrillers that draw from history and cutting edge science, though his characters have more depth (or as I like to say, he writes like a woman--in terms of character development and relationships) and he always has a supernatural element involved.

I just started a new series based on a 6-Pack recommendation: His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik. It's the first in a series of alternate history fantasy novels in which the Napoleonic War is fought with each side having an aerial corps of dragons and riders. I'm not quite halfway and absolutely loving it!

Hi Amanda! The first in the series is called "The Cold Dish". There is a spiritual undertone to the series that's based on Native American culture. I really enjoy that. This is my second time through the series.

I am now reading 8 books at the same time. emoticon Can't help myself. My mind is always racing and I get bored easily. Going from book to book is like watching different shows at the same time. Keeps my mind sharp too since I have to keep track of all the characters. emoticon

I have read a couple from Debbie Macomber and have finished books whose ending was the pits. I can't remember if I went on reading books from that author or not. Another author that's tricky for me is Preston & Child. Some of their books blew me away and some I couldn't finish. So.... I just keep trying.

I finished Debbie Macomber's If Not for You--which was very enjoyable until the end, when it just sort of bumbled to a stop. It's rare that I read a book and have the reaction of "That's it? Seriously?" at its conclusion.

Decided to reread the Boonsboro Inn trilogy by Nora Roberts; am about halfway through the first book with Beckett and Claire. Lizzie the ghost has barely made a cameo so far.

I may try him. Is it important to start with the first book? If so, what's the title that begins the series?

I finished all the Patty Briggs books, though I read the final one twice. I had forgotten the twist at the end, and wanted to go back to review the foreshadowing of the reveal. Now enjoying Debbie Macomber's newest novel--light and fun.

Wow, Amanda! That's some kind of story! emoticon My mood changes and I read according to my mood. Right now I am into cozy mysteries and regular mysteries, and enjoying those. I love the author Craig Johnson who writes stories set in modern day western USA (Wyoming). The stories are wonderful and Netflix has a series called Longmire set from the books.

I'm deep in my Patricia Briggs, now on the most recent Alpha and Omega novel, where they go down to Arizona to buy Anna a horse, to discover a family member near death after an attack by the fae, and Charles Changes her to werewolf so that she might live. I enjoy having Leslie of the FBI show up to help. The characters Briggs creates are so wonderfully multi-dimensional, which adds such depth to the stories.
emoticon (pretend that's a wolf) emoticon (Chelsea, the woman changed is witchborn, which is why the pack Alpha considers killing her, since the Navajo tend to think of all witches as evil--thank goodness for Anna's Omega "superpowers"!)

I sometimes read young people's books too. I have a collection of children's books that I keep with me. My last two were "Freddy the Frogcaster and the Huge Hurricane" by Janice Dean. I was interested because we get big storms in Florida and I was wondering how she wrote the book for children about it. It is very good even though I would have written it a little bit different. The other is entitled "The Night of the Hurricane's Fury" by Candice Ransom and it is a little bit more realistic.

I just finished a book of Bruce Coville's that was completely new to me--Fortune's Journey, a young adult novel (everything else of his that I've read has been aimed at children). It centers on a young woman leading a troupe of actors as they journey to California on a wagon train. The idea for the story came out of Bruce's involvement with youth theater! It was a very good story, which I read in less than a day, around all my job hunt activities.

I absolutely inhaled the 9 episodes of CTM Season 6 (Christmas special plus 8 regular season shows). The bonus feature is next. A very emotional season; I think I cried more over this than any other.

And despite having read it several times, it still brought tears of joy in a couple of sections.

It was tears of sorrow shed numerous times as I watched the final episode of Call the Midwife Season 5, in preparation for picking up Season 6 from the library today. The episode twined 2 main stories of the loss of a character who had been there for 5 seasons, and the discovery of a connection between a drug given widely for anxiety, sleeplessness and morning sickness and a number of births of deformed babies, often without limbs, and in one case without even identifiable gender. The horrible struggle with guilt by one of the mothers and by local physician who had prescribed the drug was heart wrenching. I know I've recommended this series often, and I just hope you can find it through your local library.

I'll continue reading the next Bruce Coville book in my kids' series, The Search for Snout, at work. But I've been thinking about and decided to reread Nora Roberts' The Witness, which is one of my favorite stand alone novels of hers.

I went by the library after work to return several items including one due today. And I picked up the 4 books in Coville's Alien Adventure series: Aliens Ate My Homework, I Left My Sneakers in Dimension X, The Search for Snout, and Aliens Stole My Body, as well as a new to me book of his, Fortune's Journey, about a young woman traveling West on a wagon train in the 1800s.

But right now I'm thoroughly enjoying Autumn's Thorns about a spirit shaman who's just returned to her hometown in rural Washington (northern & coastal, I think).

Read the other book (not a sequel, all new characters) in Bruce Coville's Enchanted Files series, Hatched, about a griffin. It started rather slowly for me, but ended up being quite enjoyable. A third book in the series comes out sometime this year, Trolled. I've requested the 4 books in Bruce's Alien Adventures series from the 90s. Once the first book arrives, Aliens Ate My Homework, I begin rereading them. I read them aloud to my first class of 5th graders, some of whom really enjoyed them.

Starting a cozy mystery by Yasmine Galenorn writing as India Ink. I've also requested the new live action Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the Harry Potter movies. I'm #1916 in line for 129 copies. In other Potter movie news, when I looked up the cast of Call the Midwife on IMDb, I discovered to my amazement that Sister Evangelina, the tough-as-nails nun, is played by the actress who played Aunt Marge in HP #3, whom Harry inadvertently blew up (like a balloon--in fact she floated off into the sky).

Read a delightfully funny kid's book, Cursed, by Bruce Coville, about a (magical) Brownie who comes to these shores and brings an old country curse with him. The concluding Author Notes were a real hoot, with alternating snipes from "Angus" (the Scottish Brownie) and "the Coville" (who helped him edit and publish his journal).

Just finished watching Season 5 of Call the Midwife; waiting for Season 6 to come in. Read on IMDb that "Call The Midwife has recently been voted the Best Drama of the 21st Century in the BFI and Radio Times Festival Audience Poll." Wow! I know I absolutely *love* it!

Gave up on the Galenorn book The Changeling--just didn't like the characters enough to want to keep reading about them. Halfway through the second season of Call the Midwife. I was tearing up a short time ago over a very poignant scene. You come to care deeply about the characters and their challenges and triumphs.

Interesting: I gave up on this DB Frank novel as well. The characters, again, were quite wealthy, and I just didn't relate to them or care much about their lives. So I've begun a YA paranormal/ urban fantasy by Yasmine Galenorn, who wrote a mystery series I quite enjoyed featuring a witch.

I also picked up Season 1 of Call the Midwife, based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth. I haven't read them, but might give them a try. Her words are voiced by Vanessa Redgrave, looking back to that time in the 1950s in the East End of London amid poverty, at a time when there was no popular birth control, and the nuns and midwives attended 80-100 births *every month* in their community! They also held prenatal clinics, home visits and other medical services as part of the National Health Service. Endearing characters, moving stories, laughter and tears. Another example of glorious storytelling which I cannot recommend highly enough.

I finished The Last Chance Olive Ranch. It alternated between action with China on the olive ranch, and her husband, McQuaid, who has a violent prison escapee gunning for him. Definitely exciting, with lots of luscious recipes at the end.

I'm planning to pick up the newest Dorothea Benton Frank novel, which finally arrived. I didn't finish the last one, because I was rather bored by it, whereas I've thoroughly enjoyed most of hers that I've read.

At some point, I'll read the newest James Rollins Sigma Force novel that I picked up at Costco a few months ago. I may try rereading that series, as I've pretty well forgotten where we are with some of the characters. He always has heart-stopping action, fascinating science & history, and usually with a bit of supernatural twist.

I finished rereading the amazing series of urban fantasy novels by Anne Bishop, beginning with Written in Red. It's hard to believe how good they are, how compelling the alternate reality she's created, and the characters who inhabit it.

I'm now reading the newest China Bayles mystery by Susan Wittig Albert, The Last Chance Olive Ranch.

I really hoped the new book would feature the same characters, as I really cared about them, and want to know what happens next in their lives. But the new novel, 'Forever, Again' deals with completely different folks and reincarnation. Not as compelling (as in "I just can't stop reading!") for me, but quite intriguing.

I got a new YA novel by Victoria Laurie (a professional psychic who writes mysteries featuring psychics), but first started rereading her first young adult novel--a fascinating mystery titled When. I'm just finishing it--pretty much the only thing I did after work today! I highly recommend it, and it is a fast, compelling read.

I'm now about half way through a follow up novel to Vulcan's Forge by the same 2 authors, Vulcan's Heart. Ties in beautifully to a number of characters from various episodes & movies--Saavik, the half-Vulcan/half-Romulan from the movies, the female Romulan commander from The Enterprise Incident (TOS), ponn far from Amok Time (TOS), Rachel Carson, captain of the Enterprise C in Yesterday's Enterprise (STNG), Spock's interest in Romulan/Vulcan reunification (STNG &/or DS9). Makes me want to go back and watch all the old series!

Loved both books! Then I got Season 4 of Elementary, which has very good storytelling & intriguing characters. Watched all the episodes, and was in the mood for something fun, so pulled out an old Star Trek novel, Vulcan's Forge which centers on Spock, post-Kirk's death. I've almost finished it, and have enjoyed it greatly. I find myself picturing some of the new crew as well as the original cast in my head.

I reread a few choice scenes, in 2 earlier Mercy Thompson novels, including the end of Night Broken, and have now started rereading Fire Touched, the most recent novel in the series, in preparation of the next book coming out on Tuesday, which I will buy on the release date and begin reading immediately. I have to pre-order the new Others novel, which will be shipped on release date (also next Tuesday) and hopefully get to me on Friday. I'll be rereading the last one or 2 of those to get ready. I am just wild about both of these urban fantasy series with richly created universes with a variety of supernatural beings interacting with humans, some of whom have powers, and some who do not. Both authors, Patricia Briggs and Anne Bishop, are also very skilled at creating characters you can care about passionately, with humor, great emotional depth, and thrilling danger.

I actually gave up on the Psalm 23 series halfway through one mystery--pacing and character development just started to feel off to me. Just finished another early Dorothea Benton Frank novel--another delight, Shem Creek. What I finally figured out is that she sometimes has tiny crossovers with cameo appearances of characters from earlier works. But because I'm hopping around in order, with other books in between, I'm not keeping them straight.

Time to reread the last Mercy Thompson and Other novels in preparation for the release of the next novels in each series on the same day!

Sounds interesting.

Book 2 in the 23rd Psalm Mysteries series still hasn't come in, so I finally decided to read Book 3 and 4, which I've had for a couple weeks already, and just read the 2nd one when it finally gets returned. Enjoyable and fast moving

I've been reading Kristin Britain's Rider series. It's definitely a fantasy series, that seems to draw from ancient Rome conquering ...well, everywhere else.

In the first story, Green Rider, a student running away from school comes across a dying Green Rider, one of the King's chosen messengers. He implores her to complete his mission, and she agrees in spite of the 2 arrows sticking out of him. Then she takes his horse and Green Rider brooch, and adventures (including stopping a war) ensue, with the help of Green Rider magic.

In the second novel, Karigan has agreed to become a Green Rider permanently, and the Dark Wild Magic contained behind the great wall has broken loose as a result of an incident in the previous book. Karigan learns of an ancestor and his role in the great war, and how it impacts them 1000 years later.

I am currently reading the High King's Tomb, in which a secret group has determined that it is time to overthrow the land. It's exciting, emotional, and allows us to check in with friends from the first 2 books.

It's a great series.

What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals. Henry David Thoreau

I stumbled across the first season of a BBC series (there was a funny, funny ad for BBC America before it began) Call the Midwife. I've only seen the first episode so far, and it's *very* good!

I finished that Psalm 23 debut mystery, The Lord Is My Shepherd, and enjoyed it greatly. I've requested the next 2, just waiting for them to arrive.

This weekend watched DVDs of the first new Star Trek movie with my sister--loved it! I had seen the second, Into Darkness again recently, and posted somewhere that it was better than I remembered; that was because I hadn't finished it. The first third to half was sort of fun, but the rest got really dark and violent, and they badly cast Carol Marcus (the future mother of Kirk's unknown son, David, from The Wrath of Khan) with a strong English accent that magically disappeared in her later years, and have a white bread Englishman play Noonien Singh Khan with a cold and stiff delivery was a travesty that bore no relation to Ricardo Montalban's passionate & charismatic (as well as ethnic) portrayal. Ah, well, the filmmakers were redeemed in the third movie, Beyond, which had great repartee, thrilling action, humor, high energy, and poignant themes as well. Also a good supporting cast. My second time, Mary's first for that one.

Gave up on the Wolf Springs Chronicles co-written by Debbie Viguie who wrote the Witch Hunt novels I so enjoyed. I was nearly halfway through the second of 3 books of the YA series when I realized I really didn't care about any of the characters. Viguie is doing better in the book I just started, The Lord Is My Shepherd, the first of the Psalm 23 Mysteries, about a church secretary and a rabbi who get involved in a murder.

But the best book I've inhaled recently was Dorothea Benton Frank's Return to Sullivans Island. I loved her debut novel, Sullivans Island, and this features the same family, though focusing on the daughter, rather than the mother. This woman can write! You care deeply about the fascinating and imperfect people, and she helps you see and smell the Lowcountry of South Carolina. I have a few more of hers from the library to read. I *highly* recommend these books!

Just finished the third (and possibly last) Witch Hunt novel by Debbie Viguie. Wow! Extremely good urban fantasy trilogy. I guess she might return with the characters, but the 3-story arc tied up very nicely with some strong lessons about self-acceptance and letting go of inner demons and limitations. Hard stories to put down, though--just feel I should warn you about that!

That title sounds familiar, though I know I haven't read it. Where is it set?

I discovered a new urban fantasy writer, Donna (?) Viguie and enjoyed her first novel in the Witch Hunt series, The Thirteenth Sacrifice; very intriguing.

Almost done with Dorothea Benton Frank's debut novel, Sullivan Island, which is fantastic--bounces back and forth between modern day (1999) and 1963 during the turbulent Southern childhood of the main character. I'm going to enjoy reading more of her novels.

I picked up the first Donna Andrews mystery and was mildly entertained for a while, but found myself getting more and more annoyed with it. I finally figured out the protagonist had no sense of appropriate boundaries: "friends" and family kept taking advantage of her, and she never stood up to them. I couldn't find it humorous anymore, and decided to return it unfinished, so went on to the next library book--a young adult fairy tale retelling which is so far mildly entertaining, with a strong female character, at least!

I picked up a couple new authors at the library--a mystery by Donna Andrews that was cute (Lord of the Wings), and All the Single Ladies by Dorothea Benton Frank--also enjoyable. I'm going to try their first books. Right now (on my lazy sick day of doing nothing), I'm rereading the Bride Quartet by Nora Roberts about the four childhood friends who run a wedding business together. I'm on the second book and enjoying them greatly.

I've recommended the Wishcraft and the Magic Potions cozy mystery series by Heather Blake, and I want to tout her Lucy Valentine series penned under her real name of Heather Webber. There are 5 so far:
1. Truly, Madly
2. Deeply, Desperately
3. Absolutely, Positively
4. Perfectly Matched
5. Undeniably Yours

They are also cozies with a light paranormal flair--the Valentine family has specific psychic abilities--though no magic practice. Again she writes characters you can care about with a lot of romance and humor. So enjoyable!

I inhaled the last book in Nora Roberts' newest Guardians trilogy, Island of Glass. (#1--Stars of Fortune, #2 Bay of Sighs) It was published on Tuesday and arrived on Thursday. Finished it Friday, re-reading once more before passing on to sister who has the first; she'll get the next two when I see her next weekend.

Friend from work and I kept missing a movie date, so I saw Hacksaw Ridge on my own today (the before noon matinee for $6.60). I challenge any woman to watch it and not end up in tears. Graphically portrays the horror and carnage of war, but also a testament to valor and the amazing impact one person can have. If you can stomach the blood and guts (or close your eyes as needed), it is a truly moving and inspiring story.

After waiting for months for my library reservation to come in, I finally was able to check out Race, the story of the Jesse Owens triumph at the Berlin 1936 Olympics--to the consternation of the Nazis. A powerful story, well-told, about a piece of history I was only vaguely familiar with. Highly recommended. Oh, and the song over the closing credits ("Let the Games Begin"?) is great--high energy with a bit of a gospel feel to it. And I love that they use the line "May the best one [not man] win"!

(This is my reply to a BB teammate who mentioned a "Wicked" series by Janet Evanovich)

Interesting. I've had plenty of people rave about the Stephanie Plum books by Evanovich (the numbered series), and tried to read the first books at 2 different times, but I can't get far, because the heroine just seems shallow and slutty to me--not someone I care about. But I can check out the Wicked series and see if it tickles my funny bone. It's sort of like how I *really* like the Psychic Eye series by Victoria Laurie, but finally gave up on her Ghost Hunter series because the characters seemed pretty 2-dimensional (to me) and started to just annoy me.
emoticon
I'm on the 3rd Psychic Eye mystery, but my library system only has ebook versions of #3-6. And since I haven't figured out my Nook yet, I have to read this on my laptop!

Just finished an absolutely delightful junior novel, The Princess and the Foal, about the real Princess Haya of Jordan who went on to become an Olympic equestrienne. It is moving and humorous and well written; I enjoyed it immensely. The author is Stacy Gregg. I'm so glad I found it at my library!

Really liking this book Katie (my wonderful therapist) recommended, The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte. Definitely speaks to the yearning I was describing to her of wanting to find the right outlets (preferably connected to meaningful and satisfying work and a generous paycheck) for my gifts. Knowing I have a great deal to share and contribute and experience; wanting to do far more than just to survive or get through. Wanting more joy and passion and connection and fun in my life! So happy the library had a bunch of copies and one came in quickly for me. I'm reading it, copying down quotes, plus jumping ahead to some of the written exercises.

Waiting for the nex Lucy Valentine to come in. Actually I read #3, and hopefully #2 will get here tomorrow, then #4 & #5 soon after that (that's all she has for now). Finished a YA novel by Gary Soto, just OK. Wanted something fun to enjoy with my dinner salad and to relax, so looked up in my DS9 Companion Guide and found where my favorite comic episode of Star Trek Deep Space 9 fit in--the 4th episode of season 7, Take Me Out to the Holosuite. I thoroughly enjoyed it--again. emoticon

I'm ~ halfway through the new Lucy Valentine mystery I picked up from the library today. It's a paranormal mystery by Heather Webber, who also writes as Heather Blake (the Wishcraft and the Magical Potions series). I read the first, and am still waiting for the second to come in. This is the third, but I didn't want to wait. I tried her first series, but I didn't care for the characters or writing nearly as well--maybe she just wasn't as good a writer yet.

I finally gave up on Terry McMillan's new book (I Almost Forgot About You?)--depressing and the people were just too mean to each other.

On a whim, I had picked up The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend because it was such a curious title. I began it today; it started sort of slow, but I'm now absolutely enchanted. An author quote from the back page: "One of the more surprisingly improbable and delightful books I've read in years. . . Quirky, unpredictable, funny, and fresh--a WONDERFUL BOOK." And emoticon totally!

I have books and series I love so much I have to re-read them often--Patricia Briggs, Anne Bishop, the Rollins/Cantrell trilogy, and of course Harry Potter.

I just finished a juvenile novel, Jefferson's Sons about Thomas Jefferson's slave children. Very poignant, and by the end heartbreaking.

I liked Toxic Trousseau, though it isn't my favorite in the series.

I've been reading The Strange and Beautiful Sorrow of Ava Lavendar, by Leslye Walton. I highly recommend it, though I'm not far enough to know the ending. The story involves characters who are unusual, almost walking metaphors. It is really interesting and beautiful.

Update: I finished it and experienced that sense of loss you have when you have finished something wonderful and know that you can never go back to experience it for the first time. I am considering re- reading it immediately.

Just finished the 5th and final Rose Harbor Inn novel by Debbie Macomber. Sweet, but I've found I'm less satisfied by her stories, mainly because of the writing. She deals with real world stuff with a lot of heart, but I find her similes trite or hyperbolic, and her characters tend to keep repeating the same feelings and issues over and over, and then things magically resolve. I don't know, I just get annoyed with it sometimes. Yet I keep wanting to read her new publications--though I'm sticking with the library instead of buying them these days.

Blessed Be, Amanda

Just finished a Newberry Honor Book, The War that Saved My Life, by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. Took place in England at the beginning of WWII, when children in London were being evacuated out to the country, focusing on an abused girl with a disability, and how it changes her. It was *wonderful*! It's got me in the mood to read other award-winning children's books. I want to read another by her, Jefferson's Sons, about kids he had with one of his slaves--at least that's what it sounds like from the teaser.

Much lighter fare, but highly enjoyable! Rereading the Wishcraft cozy mystery series with plenty of magic, by Heather Blake who creates characters you can care about. There's some depth along with the humor and sweetness. I'm up to the newest one in the series, just out this year, Gone with the Witch.

As my sister started reading the urban fantasy series by Anne Bishop on my recommendation, I decided to re-read them myself, and *just* finished the fourth and most recent installment, Marked in Flesh. The complex relationships between the humans and various supernatural beings are fascinating and compelling, and she makes you care deeply about the characters, regardless of species. The history and political intrigue and challenges make for great suspense, which is balanced by amazingly deep character development, occasional tragedy, and frequent humor.

Those are huge books! I never read them, but I know he has a lot of fans.

I read the newest stand alone Nora Roberts, The Liar, which I enjoyed. Then when I was out sick with no energy to *do* anything, I re-read two of my favorite single novels of hers, The Witness and Three Fates--which was the first book of hers I ever read.

I've been watching Charmed, getting a season at a time from the library, but they only buy 5 seasons of a series as a rule. If enough patrons request more, as happened with Downton Abbey (duh! they've bought over 100 copies of the last few years due to extreme popularity) and Castle. I requested they buy 6-8, but they declined. So I planned to buy the series with a 25% off coupon from B&N, but found a new copy from a "marketplace" vendor for less than that. I won't have it for 2-3 weeks, and I'm now on Season 4--the first without Shannon D; I have season 5 on order. I've been surprised at some of the deep emotions touched on, especially this season. I'm glad they've dealt with grief and mourning over an extended arc. There's silliness, too, but I'm enjoying them greatly, and can see rewatching just for fun.

Been reading "The Eye of the World" by Robert Jordan. It's great to start a new series that it turns out I'm really enjoying and can sink my teeth into.

On the last of a trilogy by C.E. Murphy in The Negotiator series. They are Heart of Stone, House of Cards and Hands of Flame. Amazing urban fantasy novels--just sad there are only 3.

I just finished the new (came out in March) Anne Bishop novel, Marked in Flesh. I can't believe how good it was! These books are so involved and well-told. I care about the characters deeply--the humans, the shifters, the vampires. I like how they truly think differently, and how the best of them strive to find ways to work together, despite the hate-mongering of a particular group of humans. I really cried in one tragic section, but I love the hope that also blooms as individuals reach beyond their own species to find and do what is best for all. I really *really* recommend these books!

Found a bookseller at B&N who's also into fantasy. I was there to pick up the new Mercy Thompson novel, Fire Touched, which was absolutely & completely fabulous! Anway, Diane told me about a new Anne Bishop series, the Others. I think her previous series were straight fantasy, but this is urban fantasy, like Patricia Briggs' Mercy series and her Alpha & Omega ones, or Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden novels. So I just started the first one, Written in Red, which I'm enjoying immensely! It's a long book, but I've already requested the next one. There's only 4 so far; I'll probably inhale them all, then check out her earlier works, and see if I like them as well. I'm getting them at the library--at least so far!

My sister recommended a children's fantasy series by Victoria Laurie, whose Psychic Eye mystery series I've enjoyed, as I did her YA novel, When. This is the Oracles of Delphi Keep. I'm on the 3rd book, and enjoying them.

I am enjoying "A Wilder Rose" by Susan Wittig Albert, a fictional account of Rose Wilder, the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder. There is a little controversy around this book due to the books used for primary research, and the fact that Laura and Rose were not as lovey-dovey as people wish that they were, but overall, it is really enjoyable. Laura wasn't perfect, and her daughter longed to distinguish herself beyond the shadow of her others books (which Rose heavily edited). It was less perfect than people wanted, but that's what makes it interesting.

I partway through Harry Potter 5--I'm rereading them all. This is the biggest one, when poor Harry is full of teen angst, and the Ministry of Magic is giving him and Dumbledore a bad time, because they refuse to believe Voldemort is back. Are you a Harry Potter fan? I reread the series once a year.

Just finished "X" by Sue Grafton. Although it's a little darker than a lot of her books, I enjoyed it more than any of her books since "H". I really think she is a fabulous writer, and this book gives a nod to some past characters we haven't seen in awhile.

Just finished Beach Town by Mary Kay Andrews--absolutely delightful. I haven't enjoyed all her books equally, but some have been real gems. I enjoyed the peek into the movie business in this one, which features a location scout who brings a whole Hollywood production team into a tiny Florida town.

That's so cool! Have you tried her other series yet? Unfortunately she hasn't written a lot of them, but she's getting them published pretty quickly--yeah! I was already planning to share this post on this team as well as my others:

I am really loving Heather Blake's 2 magical mystery series--both the Wishcraft and Magic Potions series. Lots of quirky characters, but they have depth as well as color; they think and grow, and I care about them!

I discovered a new series author of magical mysteries (who was close to Juliet Blackwell in the library and bookstore)--Heather Blake. I've read the first 2 in her first Wishcraft series (not to be confused with Blackwell's Witchcraft series), and just started her second Magic Potions series, which I'm also enjoying. She has interesting characters and a well-developed magical universe she created in the first series, set in a village near Salem, Massachusetts. The newer series has a healer (hoodoo) witch living in Alabama, where they love crazy (according to the heroine); I'm not sure if there will be as much of a fantasy element as in the other set of books. But I like her writing.

Started and finished the new Debbie Macomber Christmas book, Dashing Through the Snow, today. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Just got the new Nora Roberts book, the first in a new fantasy trilogy, Stars of Fortune. It's always hard to wait for months for the next installment! I read part of the peek at her next stand-alone coming out next year, but don't think I'll read the rest. Some of her "romantic suspense" novels are just too dark and violent. Others I've loved, but I've learned to be wary. The trilogies are often more satisfying for me with crackling dialog and pop culture references. I'm sure I'll finish it by tomorrow, but I picked up several books at the library.

Finally got The Imitation Game from the library (there were hundreds in line when I first signed up for it). Excellent, yet so sad what intolerance wrought.

Just finished The Paris Key, a lovely novel by Juliet Blackwell, whose cozy mysteries, especially her Witchcraft series, I've enjoyed greatly. This was a lovely stand alone transformation fiction piece.

Am caught up on the Psychic Eye series by Victoria Laurie, have enjoyed them greatly. The last got into some deeper issues than she's dealt with before.

I've only got a couple more chapters in the next to most-recent Haunted Home Renovations mystery by Juliet Blackwell. I laughed out loud several times while reading at lunch today. emoticon and I learned the new Harry Dresden book just arrived at the library. It may be a graphic novel, or some special format--can't wait to check it out!
