Sounds interesting.

Book 2 in the 23rd Psalm Mysteries series still hasn't come in, so I finally decided to read Book 3 and 4, which I've had for a couple weeks already, and just read the 2nd one when it finally gets returned. Enjoyable and fast moving

I've been reading Kristin Britain's Rider series. It's definitely a fantasy series, that seems to draw from ancient Rome conquering ...well, everywhere else.

In the first story, Green Rider, a student running away from school comes across a dying Green Rider, one of the King's chosen messengers. He implores her to complete his mission, and she agrees in spite of the 2 arrows sticking out of him. Then she takes his horse and Green Rider brooch, and adventures (including stopping a war) ensue, with the help of Green Rider magic.

In the second novel, Karigan has agreed to become a Green Rider permanently, and the Dark Wild Magic contained behind the great wall has broken loose as a result of an incident in the previous book. Karigan learns of an ancestor and his role in the great war, and how it impacts them 1000 years later.

I am currently reading the High King's Tomb, in which a secret group has determined that it is time to overthrow the land. It's exciting, emotional, and allows us to check in with friends from the first 2 books.

It's a great series.

What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals. Henry David Thoreau

I stumbled across the first season of a BBC series (there was a funny, funny ad for BBC America before it began) Call the Midwife. I've only seen the first episode so far, and it's *very* good!

I finished that Psalm 23 debut mystery, The Lord Is My Shepherd, and enjoyed it greatly. I've requested the next 2, just waiting for them to arrive.

This weekend watched DVDs of the first new Star Trek movie with my sister--loved it! I had seen the second, Into Darkness again recently, and posted somewhere that it was better than I remembered; that was because I hadn't finished it. The first third to half was sort of fun, but the rest got really dark and violent, and they badly cast Carol Marcus (the future mother of Kirk's unknown son, David, from The Wrath of Khan) with a strong English accent that magically disappeared in her later years, and have a white bread Englishman play Noonien Singh Khan with a cold and stiff delivery was a travesty that bore no relation to Ricardo Montalban's passionate & charismatic (as well as ethnic) portrayal. Ah, well, the filmmakers were redeemed in the third movie, Beyond, which had great repartee, thrilling action, humor, high energy, and poignant themes as well. Also a good supporting cast. My second time, Mary's first for that one.

Gave up on the Wolf Springs Chronicles co-written by Debbie Viguie who wrote the Witch Hunt novels I so enjoyed. I was nearly halfway through the second of 3 books of the YA series when I realized I really didn't care about any of the characters. Viguie is doing better in the book I just started, The Lord Is My Shepherd, the first of the Psalm 23 Mysteries, about a church secretary and a rabbi who get involved in a murder.

But the best book I've inhaled recently was Dorothea Benton Frank's Return to Sullivans Island. I loved her debut novel, Sullivans Island, and this features the same family, though focusing on the daughter, rather than the mother. This woman can write! You care deeply about the fascinating and imperfect people, and she helps you see and smell the Lowcountry of South Carolina. I have a few more of hers from the library to read. I *highly* recommend these books!

Just finished the third (and possibly last) Witch Hunt novel by Debbie Viguie. Wow! Extremely good urban fantasy trilogy. I guess she might return with the characters, but the 3-story arc tied up very nicely with some strong lessons about self-acceptance and letting go of inner demons and limitations. Hard stories to put down, though--just feel I should warn you about that!

That title sounds familiar, though I know I haven't read it. Where is it set?

I discovered a new urban fantasy writer, Donna (?) Viguie and enjoyed her first novel in the Witch Hunt series, The Thirteenth Sacrifice; very intriguing.

Almost done with Dorothea Benton Frank's debut novel, Sullivan Island, which is fantastic--bounces back and forth between modern day (1999) and 1963 during the turbulent Southern childhood of the main character. I'm going to enjoy reading more of her novels.

I picked up the first Donna Andrews mystery and was mildly entertained for a while, but found myself getting more and more annoyed with it. I finally figured out the protagonist had no sense of appropriate boundaries: "friends" and family kept taking advantage of her, and she never stood up to them. I couldn't find it humorous anymore, and decided to return it unfinished, so went on to the next library book--a young adult fairy tale retelling which is so far mildly entertaining, with a strong female character, at least!

I picked up a couple new authors at the library--a mystery by Donna Andrews that was cute (Lord of the Wings), and All the Single Ladies by Dorothea Benton Frank--also enjoyable. I'm going to try their first books. Right now (on my lazy sick day of doing nothing), I'm rereading the Bride Quartet by Nora Roberts about the four childhood friends who run a wedding business together. I'm on the second book and enjoying them greatly.

I've recommended the Wishcraft and the Magic Potions cozy mystery series by Heather Blake, and I want to tout her Lucy Valentine series penned under her real name of Heather Webber. There are 5 so far:
1. Truly, Madly
2. Deeply, Desperately
3. Absolutely, Positively
4. Perfectly Matched
5. Undeniably Yours

They are also cozies with a light paranormal flair--the Valentine family has specific psychic abilities--though no magic practice. Again she writes characters you can care about with a lot of romance and humor. So enjoyable!

I inhaled the last book in Nora Roberts' newest Guardians trilogy, Island of Glass. (#1--Stars of Fortune, #2 Bay of Sighs) It was published on Tuesday and arrived on Thursday. Finished it Friday, re-reading once more before passing on to sister who has the first; she'll get the next two when I see her next weekend.

Friend from work and I kept missing a movie date, so I saw Hacksaw Ridge on my own today (the before noon matinee for $6.60). I challenge any woman to watch it and not end up in tears. Graphically portrays the horror and carnage of war, but also a testament to valor and the amazing impact one person can have. If you can stomach the blood and guts (or close your eyes as needed), it is a truly moving and inspiring story.

After waiting for months for my library reservation to come in, I finally was able to check out Race, the story of the Jesse Owens triumph at the Berlin 1936 Olympics--to the consternation of the Nazis. A powerful story, well-told, about a piece of history I was only vaguely familiar with. Highly recommended. Oh, and the song over the closing credits ("Let the Games Begin"?) is great--high energy with a bit of a gospel feel to it. And I love that they use the line "May the best one [not man] win"!

(This is my reply to a BB teammate who mentioned a "Wicked" series by Janet Evanovich)

Interesting. I've had plenty of people rave about the Stephanie Plum books by Evanovich (the numbered series), and tried to read the first books at 2 different times, but I can't get far, because the heroine just seems shallow and slutty to me--not someone I care about. But I can check out the Wicked series and see if it tickles my funny bone. It's sort of like how I *really* like the Psychic Eye series by Victoria Laurie, but finally gave up on her Ghost Hunter series because the characters seemed pretty 2-dimensional (to me) and started to just annoy me.
emoticon
I'm on the 3rd Psychic Eye mystery, but my library system only has ebook versions of #3-6. And since I haven't figured out my Nook yet, I have to read this on my laptop!

Just finished an absolutely delightful junior novel, The Princess and the Foal, about the real Princess Haya of Jordan who went on to become an Olympic equestrienne. It is moving and humorous and well written; I enjoyed it immensely. The author is Stacy Gregg. I'm so glad I found it at my library!

Really liking this book Katie (my wonderful therapist) recommended, The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte. Definitely speaks to the yearning I was describing to her of wanting to find the right outlets (preferably connected to meaningful and satisfying work and a generous paycheck) for my gifts. Knowing I have a great deal to share and contribute and experience; wanting to do far more than just to survive or get through. Wanting more joy and passion and connection and fun in my life! So happy the library had a bunch of copies and one came in quickly for me. I'm reading it, copying down quotes, plus jumping ahead to some of the written exercises.

Waiting for the nex Lucy Valentine to come in. Actually I read #3, and hopefully #2 will get here tomorrow, then #4 & #5 soon after that (that's all she has for now). Finished a YA novel by Gary Soto, just OK. Wanted something fun to enjoy with my dinner salad and to relax, so looked up in my DS9 Companion Guide and found where my favorite comic episode of Star Trek Deep Space 9 fit in--the 4th episode of season 7, Take Me Out to the Holosuite. I thoroughly enjoyed it--again. emoticon

I'm ~ halfway through the new Lucy Valentine mystery I picked up from the library today. It's a paranormal mystery by Heather Webber, who also writes as Heather Blake (the Wishcraft and the Magical Potions series). I read the first, and am still waiting for the second to come in. This is the third, but I didn't want to wait. I tried her first series, but I didn't care for the characters or writing nearly as well--maybe she just wasn't as good a writer yet.

I finally gave up on Terry McMillan's new book (I Almost Forgot About You?)--depressing and the people were just too mean to each other.

On a whim, I had picked up The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend because it was such a curious title. I began it today; it started sort of slow, but I'm now absolutely enchanted. An author quote from the back page: "One of the more surprisingly improbable and delightful books I've read in years. . . Quirky, unpredictable, funny, and fresh--a WONDERFUL BOOK." And emoticon totally!

I have books and series I love so much I have to re-read them often--Patricia Briggs, Anne Bishop, the Rollins/Cantrell trilogy, and of course Harry Potter.

I just finished a juvenile novel, Jefferson's Sons about Thomas Jefferson's slave children. Very poignant, and by the end heartbreaking.

I liked Toxic Trousseau, though it isn't my favorite in the series.

I've been reading The Strange and Beautiful Sorrow of Ava Lavendar, by Leslye Walton. I highly recommend it, though I'm not far enough to know the ending. The story involves characters who are unusual, almost walking metaphors. It is really interesting and beautiful.

Update: I finished it and experienced that sense of loss you have when you have finished something wonderful and know that you can never go back to experience it for the first time. I am considering re- reading it immediately.

Just finished the 5th and final Rose Harbor Inn novel by Debbie Macomber. Sweet, but I've found I'm less satisfied by her stories, mainly because of the writing. She deals with real world stuff with a lot of heart, but I find her similes trite or hyperbolic, and her characters tend to keep repeating the same feelings and issues over and over, and then things magically resolve. I don't know, I just get annoyed with it sometimes. Yet I keep wanting to read her new publications--though I'm sticking with the library instead of buying them these days.

Just finished a Newberry Honor Book, The War that Saved My Life, by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. Took place in England at the beginning of WWII, when children in London were being evacuated out to the country, focusing on an abused girl with a disability, and how it changes her. It was *wonderful*! It's got me in the mood to read other award-winning children's books. I want to read another by her, Jefferson's Sons, about kids he had with one of his slaves--at least that's what it sounds like from the teaser.

Much lighter fare, but highly enjoyable! Rereading the Wishcraft cozy mystery series with plenty of magic, by Heather Blake who creates characters you can care about. There's some depth along with the humor and sweetness. I'm up to the newest one in the series, just out this year, Gone with the Witch.

As my sister started reading the urban fantasy series by Anne Bishop on my recommendation, I decided to re-read them myself, and *just* finished the fourth and most recent installment, Marked in Flesh. The complex relationships between the humans and various supernatural beings are fascinating and compelling, and she makes you care deeply about the characters, regardless of species. The history and political intrigue and challenges make for great suspense, which is balanced by amazingly deep character development, occasional tragedy, and frequent humor.

Those are huge books! I never read them, but I know he has a lot of fans.

I read the newest stand alone Nora Roberts, The Liar, which I enjoyed. Then when I was out sick with no energy to *do* anything, I re-read two of my favorite single novels of hers, The Witness and Three Fates--which was the first book of hers I ever read.

I've been watching Charmed, getting a season at a time from the library, but they only buy 5 seasons of a series as a rule. If enough patrons request more, as happened with Downton Abbey (duh! they've bought over 100 copies of the last few years due to extreme popularity) and Castle. I requested they buy 6-8, but they declined. So I planned to buy the series with a 25% off coupon from B&N, but found a new copy from a "marketplace" vendor for less than that. I won't have it for 2-3 weeks, and I'm now on Season 4--the first without Shannon D; I have season 5 on order. I've been surprised at some of the deep emotions touched on, especially this season. I'm glad they've dealt with grief and mourning over an extended arc. There's silliness, too, but I'm enjoying them greatly, and can see rewatching just for fun.

On the last of a trilogy by C.E. Murphy in The Negotiator series. They are Heart of Stone, House of Cards and Hands of Flame. Amazing urban fantasy novels--just sad there are only 3.

I just finished the new (came out in March) Anne Bishop novel, Marked in Flesh. I can't believe how good it was! These books are so involved and well-told. I care about the characters deeply--the humans, the shifters, the vampires. I like how they truly think differently, and how the best of them strive to find ways to work together, despite the hate-mongering of a particular group of humans. I really cried in one tragic section, but I love the hope that also blooms as individuals reach beyond their own species to find and do what is best for all. I really *really* recommend these books!

Found a bookseller at B&N who's also into fantasy. I was there to pick up the new Mercy Thompson novel, Fire Touched, which was absolutely & completely fabulous! Anway, Diane told me about a new Anne Bishop series, the Others. I think her previous series were straight fantasy, but this is urban fantasy, like Patricia Briggs' Mercy series and her Alpha & Omega ones, or Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden novels. So I just started the first one, Written in Red, which I'm enjoying immensely! It's a long book, but I've already requested the next one. There's only 4 so far; I'll probably inhale them all, then check out her earlier works, and see if I like them as well. I'm getting them at the library--at least so far!

My sister recommended a children's fantasy series by Victoria Laurie, whose Psychic Eye mystery series I've enjoyed, as I did her YA novel, When. This is the Oracles of Delphi Keep. I'm on the 3rd book, and enjoying them.

I am enjoying "A Wilder Rose" by Susan Wittig Albert, a fictional account of Rose Wilder, the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder. There is a little controversy around this book due to the books used for primary research, and the fact that Laura and Rose were not as lovey-dovey as people wish that they were, but overall, it is really enjoyable. Laura wasn't perfect, and her daughter longed to distinguish herself beyond the shadow of her others books (which Rose heavily edited). It was less perfect than people wanted, but that's what makes it interesting.

I partway through Harry Potter 5--I'm rereading them all. This is the biggest one, when poor Harry is full of teen angst, and the Ministry of Magic is giving him and Dumbledore a bad time, because they refuse to believe Voldemort is back. Are you a Harry Potter fan? I reread the series once a year.

Just finished "X" by Sue Grafton. Although it's a little darker than a lot of her books, I enjoyed it more than any of her books since "H". I really think she is a fabulous writer, and this book gives a nod to some past characters we haven't seen in awhile.

Just finished Beach Town by Mary Kay Andrews--absolutely delightful. I haven't enjoyed all her books equally, but some have been real gems. I enjoyed the peek into the movie business in this one, which features a location scout who brings a whole Hollywood production team into a tiny Florida town.

That's so cool! Have you tried her other series yet? Unfortunately she hasn't written a lot of them, but she's getting them published pretty quickly--yeah! I was already planning to share this post on this team as well as my others:

I am really loving Heather Blake's 2 magical mystery series--both the Wishcraft and Magic Potions series. Lots of quirky characters, but they have depth as well as color; they think and grow, and I care about them!

I discovered a new series author of magical mysteries (who was close to Juliet Blackwell in the library and bookstore)--Heather Blake. I've read the first 2 in her first Wishcraft series (not to be confused with Blackwell's Witchcraft series), and just started her second Magic Potions series, which I'm also enjoying. She has interesting characters and a well-developed magical universe she created in the first series, set in a village near Salem, Massachusetts. The newer series has a healer (hoodoo) witch living in Alabama, where they love crazy (according to the heroine); I'm not sure if there will be as much of a fantasy element as in the other set of books. But I like her writing.

Started and finished the new Debbie Macomber Christmas book, Dashing Through the Snow, today. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Just got the new Nora Roberts book, the first in a new fantasy trilogy, Stars of Fortune. It's always hard to wait for months for the next installment! I read part of the peek at her next stand-alone coming out next year, but don't think I'll read the rest. Some of her "romantic suspense" novels are just too dark and violent. Others I've loved, but I've learned to be wary. The trilogies are often more satisfying for me with crackling dialog and pop culture references. I'm sure I'll finish it by tomorrow, but I picked up several books at the library.

Finally got The Imitation Game from the library (there were hundreds in line when I first signed up for it). Excellent, yet so sad what intolerance wrought.

Just finished The Paris Key, a lovely novel by Juliet Blackwell, whose cozy mysteries, especially her Witchcraft series, I've enjoyed greatly. This was a lovely stand alone transformation fiction piece.

Am caught up on the Psychic Eye series by Victoria Laurie, have enjoyed them greatly. The last got into some deeper issues than she's dealt with before.

I've only got a couple more chapters in the next to most-recent Haunted Home Renovations mystery by Juliet Blackwell. I laughed out loud several times while reading at lunch today. emoticon and I learned the new Harry Dresden book just arrived at the library. It may be a graphic novel, or some special format--can't wait to check it out!

I *love* the stories, and would be happy to hear favorite scenes or lines as you come across them. Feel free to share as much as you like here, as you work your way through them.

I like to warn people that the start of the first book is a bit slow, setting up his Cinderella existence with the Muggles, but once he gets to Hogwarts, the action really takes off. Enjoy!

I'm re-reading some of the early Wind River Mysteries, and reading others for the first time. They are set in Wyoming, featuring Father John O'Malley, a priest at the Catholic mission on the WR reservation, and Vickie Holden, an Arapaho lawyer. The one I'm reading now, Spirit Woman, deals with the search by women historian's for written documents that might solve the mysteries surrounding Sacajawea's life after the Lewis and Clark expedition. There are also two women dealing with abusive men in their lives, just as Sacajawea did with her French trapper husband. A tense read.

I adore the Harry Potter series, and re-read all 7 books at least once a year! Will this be your first time through them all?

I'm reading The City by Dean Koontz: Although there is a slight supernatural element, it isn't horror. Focuses on the childhood of a black musician in the 60s--beautiful and poignant.

Stumbled on a cute title by Fanny Flagg: The All Girls Filling Station Last Reunion (or at least that's close) at the library--very enjoyable.

Finally gave the new Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse series author) series debut novel, Midnight Crossroads, a try--intriguing.

And picked up the newest Wind River Reservation mystery by Margaret Coel, Night of the White Buffalo. I'm going to go back and re-read the early ones, and the ones I missed after I left the bookstore business.

I read the final volume of the Order of the Sanguines series not long after it came out (by James Rollins--a fave author--and Rebecca Cantrell). Now I'm re-reading this fabulous trilogy; finished volume one, Blood Gospel, and now into volume two, Innocent Blood. Supernatural thrillers with deep spiritual and historical themes.

The first book in the Trash 'n' Treasures series by Barbara Allen (actually a husband and wife writing team), Antiques Roadkill, finally arrived and I'm halfway through. Cute, but I know they get better. No emoticon yet this book, but I know I will later, and it's interesting to see how relationships are set up in the beginning.

I stayed up late, and then read today until almost noon to finish Catherine Anderson's Walking on Air. I laughed out loud a couple times, and shed a number of mostly happy tears over this moving redemption and transformation story. I was fairly amazed at how much I enjoyed it, how much this "romance" touched me. That may teach me not to judge a book by it's genre!

I've now read two of the Trash n' Treasures books (out of order) and they are a total hoot! emoticon I can't wait until I can read them all in order.

I picked up another Catherine Anderson novel--a romance, but with plenty of heavenly shenanigans. (Archangels Michael and Gabriel taking on a gunslinger, instead of Debbie Macomber's trio of angels, Shirley, Goodness and Mercy.) The title is Walking on Air, the start of a new historical series for her. She's a good writer who creates characters with some depth. I've just requested more of her books--the first (I hope) in several series, some historical and some contemporary.

I've made a couple fun finds at the library. Half the time I pick something up on a whim, I never start t--or begin ad give up, because I don't enjoy it. But I read my first Catherine Anderson novel (I rarely read romances), the first in a new series ("A Mystic Creek novel"),set in a small Oregon town name Mystic Creek. It's called Silver Thaw, and I enjoyed it enough to request a couple other titles by her.

And I just finished my first cozy 'Trash 'n Treasure mystery, Antiques Knock-Off. All the titles begin with "Antiques." It was *so* funny, and a bit sweet, too. I picked up a second, which I'll read, and I've requested the first 4 in the series. The one I just read was #5 I think. Great fun, and totally recommended. emoticon (Really, I did!)

Just finished the 5th Nikki Heat book "by Richard Castle"; now waiting in line for the 2014 installment--book #6. Funny, I had been #96 in line for 31 copies, but when I refreshed the library holds page just now, it reads 94 of 42--maybe they purchased more because of the high demand.

Now reading the next to newest book in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith, which are always kind and heart-warming and humorous; they read like love letters to Africa/Botswana, where I think Smith was raised by missionary parents. This is #14, The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon

I'm on the 4th Nikki Heat novel--rereading them to remember the flow of events for the next two installments in the series. They are "written by Richard Castle" and very cleverly tie in with events and details on the Castle TV series. I don't know who the ghost writer is, but they have a very similar storytelling sense. Great fun, and hard to put down!

That series sounds like fun, Amy! I think I will check it out.

Almost done with Debbie Macomber's new holiday book, Mr. Miracle--about a male angel who comes to earth to help humans, but gets in trouble his own self! Silly but cute.

Re-watched The Man in the Iron Mask--good story, lovely music, moving performances.

I recently re-read Patricia Wrede's Dealing With Dragons series. I wish all young girls could read this! The heroine of the fairy tale, is a young princess who is practical, intelligent, and unwilling to settle...basically, not at all fairy tale princess-like. To avoid an arranged marriage, she runs away and becomes a dragons princess, then goes on adventures. Essentially, it's about being empowered, but it is so entertaining!

It's sort of like a tween-age version of the Paper-Bag Princess. (Also a great read for young girls.) emoticon

I will probably finish my new book this evening: Grounded by Neta and Dave Jackson. She wrote he Yada Yada Prayer Group books which I greatly enjoyed. This is in a new series which features some familiar characters from the YYPG books, the House of Hope series & others. Funny how a pagan like me can so enjoy these Christian fiction books. But I've always enjoyed stories with a spiritual theme.

Just finished the third Rose Harbor Inn novel by Debbie Macomber, about the widow of a serviceman killed in Afghanistan who opens a B&B in Cedar Cove, Washington (a fictional town where her Cedar Cove series, now on Hallmark, was set). We follow her evolving life, and the issues of her guests. This one was titled Love Letters.

Finished the Saving Mr. Banks DVD. It was quite sweet and moving--though the "extras" were very disappointing: a single deleted scene! I was hoping to hear more about the author, her books, the casting--a number of actors I recognized in small roles. Oh, the early 60s fashions and hair were amusing. Makes me want to see the Mary Poppins movie & maybe check out the book(s). I enjoy good children's books.

I stumbled on a new to me) mystery series set in Mississippi, the Sarah Booth Delaney mysteries about a PI who has a "haint" (or ghost) in her ancestral home. The author is Carolyn Haines, who writes very well. I've enjoyed it so much, I plan to read them all in order from the library (13 or 14 now); I've reserved the first two. emoticon

I had finally gotten a book from the library (took a number of weeks for my reservation to get to me) that my therapist recommended--Calling In "The One," about breaking down barriers and attracting a loving relationship. I got into it just a little bit when another book I had requested (another recommendation from therapist Katie) came in--Overcoming Underearning: Overcome Your Money Fears and Earn What You Deserve.

When I read the jacket blurb on the second book, I realized *this* will be my valentine to myself: spending time and energy looking at my attitudes around money and finances, and increasing my knowledge, strength, and confidence in this neglected area of my life.

About to start my 3rd Nikki Heat novel by "Richard Castle" I don't know who the ghost writer is. They are fun. I'm into the 4th season of Castle on DVD, and I love the characters and relationships. Kate's dealing with the trauma of being shot & her sessions with a therapist (Michael Dorn, aka Commander Worf from Deep Space Nine; also the new captain is Penny Johnson, who as Kasidy Yates married Captain Sisko on DS9) are pretty profound. Yes, the show is funny a lot of the time, but still touches my heart.

While signing up for another season of Castle DVDs through the library, I discovered novels by "Richard Castle"--both his Derek (sp?) Storm and Nikki Heat series. I'm half through the first of the latter series, Heat Wave, which includes the dedication mentioned in the show, and sports a photo of Nathan Fillion as Castle on the back. I don't know who the ghost writer is, but it's quite fun. I have another couple on order with the library. This one is a short, quick read, too--just what I need with the work drama going on.

I've started The Tapping Solution, (by Nick Ortner) which is my second tapping book. It's written very well and delves into a lot of great stuff, while remaining very practical. The style is easy to read. I'll probably get my own copy at some point.

I stayed up later than planned and finished 2 episodes last night, then watched the 3rd one on the disc tonight. Awesome series!

I just finished a sometimes frothy novel, Island Girls, by Hot Flash Club author Nancy Thayer, which also examines family & romantic relationships with some poignancy.

Finally moved up the line and checked out The Tapping Solution by Nick Ortner, a book on EFT which is proving to be entertaining and informative. I may end up getting my own, but I always like to check out a library copy before plunking down money for something that may not be that helpful.

After seeing Parts 1 and 2, I am *loving* Downtown Abbey! I can't wait for the next disc to arrive by mail!

This is a what I'm watching: After watching the 3 seasons of Leverage available on Blockbuster online (love the show!), I've just begun Downtown Abbey from PBS. No wonder it was so popular! Fascinating soap opera upstairs and downstairs, with the sinking of the Titanic and the politics of gender and inheritance thrown in.

I finished a disturbing book late last night by Nancy Thayer, who wrote The Hot Flash Club series which I enjoyed, and The Beachcombers which I just read and liked. This was An Act of Love about a blended family that begins with the teenage daughter trying to commit suicide. She finally admits she was raped by her stepbrother, who denies the accusation. Relationships between husband and wife, parent and child, are explored, as well as the path to healing and the issues faced by a victim of sexual assault.

On a far less serious note, I watched a DVD from the library, a Hallmark channel movie, Come Dance at My Wedding. Sweet, without being phony, the dance class scenes with both children and couples was especially fun. Such a delight to see Bo Duke (John Schneider) in a rather sensitive & unglamorous role.

I forgot we have this thread! I may copy some of the entries from another team where I've posted more often what I'm reading.

I just finished a very moving historical novel that I stumbled on at the library, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. It opens in 1986 when in the basement of an abandoned hotel a discovery is made of the possessions of Japanese families who were restricted in what they could take with them when they were forced into prison camps during WWII. It flashes back to the war years, especially 1942, in the life of a Chinese boy who becomes friends with a Japanese girl. His ostracism at an otherwise all-white school, his difficult relationship with a nationalist Chinese father who hates the Japanese, his friendship with a black jazz street musician, the details of life of Chinese and Japanese in Seattle before and during the relocation of thousands of American citizens, is told simply and compassionately. I highly recommend it!

I had to laugh at the first sentence in the About the Author section at the back of the book: "Jamie Ford is the great-grandson of Nevada mining pioneer Min Chung, who emigrated from Kaiping, China, to San Francisco in 1865, where he adopted the Western name 'Ford,' thus confusing countless generations."

My current non-fiction book is Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom by Dr Christiana Northrup. On the fiction front I am busy reading a book called Generosity by Richard Powers...it's different and I'm not crazy about the writing style, but I think I will stick with it.

All November and December Food Network does a lot of special programming for the holidays. Not only a ton of great ideas, but just a lot of fun with all of my favorite chefs.

I started and finished A Perfect Hope today (the third book in the new Nora Roberts trilogy). Even though it features my least favorite brother of the 3, it was a very satisfying story, with a nice resolution for the resident ghost. Reading was a great way to break up cleaning & straightening stints. emoticon

I just finished Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief--lots of fun! emoticon And the brand new Nora Roberts came tonight from Amazon emoticon (doesn't she look like an Amazon to y'all?). It's the final book in her BoonsBoro Inn trilogy, just released on Tuesday.

I'm off tomorrow, and want to do a bunch of cleaning--and some clutter clearing--for a jewelry party on Saturday, but I imagine I'll be squeezing in some book reading here and there! emoticon

Right now I'm watching a marathon of last year's Next Iron Chef, leading up to the premiere of this year's installment tomorrow night.

I've started The Lightning Thief, the first in a series of juvenile novels by Rick Riordan--I think it might have been made into a movie.

I watch most of the detective shows on TV and read a lot of mysteries. I'm currently reading the "Body Farm" series by Jefferson Bass. He is the real life professor who started the "body farm" where they study body decomposition. I actually saw him testify on one of those documentary reality series in a trial of a serial killer. He does have a tendency to ovewhelm with facts like he's lecturing but they're interesting.

I've been doing a lot of reading lately. I have been getting book downloads from the library and usually have to waitlist them. Then they all come in at once and I have 1 - 2 weeks to read them. Right now I have the 3rd body farm mystery, Deepak Chopra's The Shadow Effect and Nora Roberts 3rd book in the Three sisters trilogy (thank you Amanda for that recommendation) and another book called Divergent.

I highly recommend LOST (it is old) you can Netflix it- other than that not much of a TV person- Shows for me are Project Runway or True Blood (TB is violent and very sexualized I warn you!)

Reading The Art of Extreme Self Care by Cheryl Richardson- it's great and HARD!
and
The Next Best Thing- by Jennifer Weiner
and
Courage by Debbie Ford

I choose peace instead of this.

In 2013, I am Claiming abundant health, abundant wealth, and abundant energy.

oh gosh, there are so many shows i enjoy watching but some great ones are "breaking bad" and "the walking dead" on amc. we've always just had netflix and watched cable tv series on there but we now have cable and i'm enjoying watching the new season as they come on. breaking bad is a science teacher who ends up cooking meth...it's crazy. and the walking dead of course is a zombie type deal. it really does depend on the person obviously but these are two shows i would have never considered and now i can't miss, lol.
i started to watch drop dead diva but for some reason lost interested in season two..lol. i do love the idea behind it though. more "thin" people need an eye opener for sure. ;)
good luck on your entertainment search :)

I can't say I recommend for, or against, something in particular. I guess it more depends on where you're at. That being said, I am a netflixer...1 DVD at a time plus streaming. The DVD's I'm watching as they become available are all the ones I never saw cause even when I had cable I never had premium. Nurse Jackie and True Blood (waiting for more to become available on both of those) and currently, 6 Feet Under. The death theme was almost too much at first but it branched out...some death, some life :) And I always am drawn to that subject anyway. I loved loved loved the Dead Like Me series.

Streaming I'm watching Bramwell (Redgrave sibling as awesome pioneering Dr in 19th century England) and Serenity/Firefly series for the 2nd time. Occasionally I dip into the Dragon Tattoo trilogy in the original...Swedish? with subtitles. I loved the books. I LOVE the Lisbeth Salander character. But I pick it up and put it down due to its intensity.

But, I also work a full and a part time job, and read fiction, and read 12-step literature (just started making my way through ACA book, and then I'll tackle the workbook), so my viewing is definitely a little at a time. Oh, and I fall asleep to Family Guy. Every nite!

Fiction, non-fiction, movies, television--what do you recommend or warn against?

I don't pay for even basic cable channels, so miss some fun series. I saw the first season of Drop Dead Diva that my sister recorded, and bought that season on DVD on sale. Saw season 2 on Blockbuster online, but they don't have season 3, so I bought it from Amazon. I started it today (great comfort watching for a recuperative day off work), and I just adore this series. I love that the plus size actress who plays Jane, the brilliant attorney in whose body Deb, the shallow, skinny aspiring model ends up after she dies, is so glamorous. The show can be sweet and funny and poignant, and I recommend it highly!

Blessed Be, Amanda
