Super Nut? Studies Show – Walnuts Great for Diabetics and Rank Above Many Other Healthy Nuts
"If you’ve adopted a healthy diet, likely you already enjoy walnuts on a regular basis. Here’s more good news for you: Among all its other health benefits, according to a recent study, walnuts improve blood-vessel health and function in patients with type-2 diabetes. This is important, as diabetics are at a higher risk for heart disease, and the improvement seen in this study suggests that walnuts could help reduce overall cardiac risk."
I'm not sure I will ever get off my meds, but as long as I can keep my blood sugars stable, I will be happy. My recent A1C was 6.5, which my doc is very happy with. He doesn't want it to go below 6.0 and he said that 6.5 is excellent. He went over my insulin dosage and adjusted my fast acting slightly (decreased). He said it would be a while though to see if I can come off the insulin, however he also noted that I still have a fair chunk of weight I want to lose, so we will review each visit I have. For now, it is just keeping on what I am doing
Don't get discouraged Yvonne, your drop from 9.6 to 7.2 is wonderful, and because you are not on insulin, the chance that you may get off your meds by the time you have your next A1C done is more likely. You are doing a fabulous job - keep up the excellent effort!

Crossing my fingers for you. Mine dropped from 9.6 to 7.2 but my doctor doesn't want to reduce my meds yet.
Hope everyone's blood sugars have been stable over the last week! I go to the doc tomorrow and will see what my most recent A1C is. It should be down a bit (my last one was 6.6 in January)

Thanks Yvonne!
Had a great weekend - no screw-ups with my insulin pens LOL. Yesterday we went into Toronto to see the Canadian theatre production of War Horse and also have dinner with our girls. I managed to keep my blood sugars stable and eat sensibly. War Horse was amazing - probably the best live theatre show I have ever seen.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed Yvonne! I've noticed such a difference just in losing 40+ lbs, so I'm hoping when I reach goal weight that the insulin (and the meds) will be gone! If not, at least will know that I am in a much healthier place than I was at 272!

Susan I think you will be able to get off your insulin and then later on off your meds altogether. The healthier you eat and the more weight you lose the closer you will get to that.
My doc is very pro-active when it comes to diabetes and he suggested to me a while back that he felt I would have better control on insulin than what I was getting with the meds. I obviously, at that time had not been able to control my blood sugars or my diet. Anyway, I hedged against going on insulin at first, but I also was not in a good headspace as far as watching my diet - so I ended up on the shots.
Since I started back to SP this past summer, my insulin requirements have decreased quite abit and Yes, I hope to one day be able to get off the shots. Will it happen? Not sure, but hopefully once I reach my goal weight I'll be off them.

Oh my gosh! Happy you didn't do any harm.I never realized you were on insulin. Hope you are able to back off the insulin soon. I am hoping I never have to go on it myself. I am concerned about my kidney function though with all of these kidney stones I throw.

I'm not sure how many here are insulin dependent. I am and had a rather uncomfortable experience this weekend. I take Humalog (fast acting) 3x a day just before meals. My usual dosage is 8 - 10 units, depending on what my blood sugar reads and also what I am eating. At night, before I go to bed I take approx. 55 units of Lantus (long acting). This usually ensures that my blood sugar reading the next morning is bang on. I have two separate insulin pens, each a different colour so as not to mix up my insulins.
I don't know if I was extra tired on Saturday night, or what, but I mistakenly injected 55 units of my R insulin (more than 6x my normal dosage of fast acting). I was just depressing the plunger on my pen with 2 units left when I noticed that I had the burgundy insulin pen in hand - not the beige Lantus one!
Did I panic? Oh yeah. I immediately started to eat and every 10 minutes for the first three hours I was checking my blood and eating. At 4:30 am, I knew the fast acting insulin was basically gone and I gave myself 1/2 of what I normally would of my Lantus and went to bed feeling incredibly nauseous. In just over 3 hours I consumed more calories and carbs than I would in 2 days. Definitely not a great way to binge out.
You would think that having two different colour pens would prevent this kind of mixup. As long as one is careful and double checks the colour, yes it does. Mind on something else? Aren't paying attention? Mistakes happen. A mistake like this could be extremely serious if you did not have the proper food on hand, or didn't even notice that you had used the wrong insulin.
For those of you on the pen, a handy tip that I read yesterday is to wrap an elastic around one of the pens where your 'plunger' hand would hold it. This way even if you aren't paying attention to the colour, you will feel if you are using the right one or not.
I hope this helps someone else from going through this same thing. This is actually the second time that I've done this (same thing happened about 2 years ago). I was positive that I would never EVER be so careless again. Wrong! I now have a rubber band wrapped around my Lantus pen.

I missed this. Good one. Let's see...
No Stevia No more darn crackers! I am trying to substitute veggie broth instead of olive oil when I can
I think I got the veggies down Lots of blueberries, love em Chia seeds, this is a new one for me Lots of cinnamon and ginger, will work on the other two
Thanks! I have started tracking my BS again. It's in the normal range but I really thought it would be lower. In the am it's averaging 118. And the 2 nights I did it, once was 101 (Yay!) and other other 117. Will try again tonight after dinner.
Interesting.

Balance your blood sugar naturally. by Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo, MS, DC, CCN, DACBN
Top 3 foods you must avoid for at least a 30-day period to reset your insulin sensitivity and restore balance:
1. Sugar and all of its relatives: maple syrup, agave, honey, rice syrup, and all sweeteners (including artificial ones which trigger insulin even though they don’t elevate sugar). 2. All flour products and all gluten: pasta, breads, crackers, etc. (even the whole grain kind). 3. Processed, hydrogenated oils and heated fats: margarine, mayonnaise, cooking with polyunsaturated oils, which are most oils (if you absolutely must cook with oil, use olive oil or coconut at low temperatures, but ideally, it’s better to go without any oil).
Top 3 foods highly recommended for at least a 30-day period to reset your insulin sensitivity and restore balance:
1. Leafy Greens: spinach, kale, dark green lettuce, red lettuce, collard greens, parsley, beet tops, etc. provide the minerals, chlorophyll, and antioxidants to protect and restore balance. Eat a variety! 2. Blueberries: they reset insulin sensitivity. 3. Chia seeds: a source of omega 3 fats, protein, and important minerals. 4. BONUS HERBS AND SPICES: cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, ginger

Hi BigFischy! I was prediabetic a couple of years ago. My numbers are pretty good now. I still have weight to lose though. And I definitely need to do more walking. I remember that exercise is what made my numbers drop the most. Although that was temporary. Still had to watch what I eat of course. Good luck!

Hi all! So I was just reaading through posts and I am glad to have found this team. I am pre-diabetic but I am working really hard to make sure I eat a low carb diet with lots of fruits and veggies. I really like pasta, so I am trying to eat less of it and when I do eat it I buy the whole wheat low GI index pasta.
I do have to say I take a spoonful of red wine vinegar before every meal to curb sugar cravings. I just started this past week. It seems to be helping! Not quite the Dr. Oz solution, and gross, but it may be worth it.

I think 6.5 is awesome as well. Mine was 6.4 and my Dr. said I didn't need my meds. Different Drs. I guess.
I just bought the DVD Simply Raw/Eliminating Diabetes in 30 Days. It's a movie with Woody Harrelson. He's kind of kooky but has been very involved in alternative lifestyles. Like bio fuel, no logging and raw eating. His movie "Go Further" is what turned me off to milk/dairy.;
I can't wait for the weekend to watch it. I don't want to have to jam it in between work/dinner/chores.
Have a good night!

I like Dr. Barnard too. 6.5 is Who knows by your next visit he may take you off the meds.
I really like Dr. Barnard and am going to look into getting his book. He makes so much sense and doesn't talk down to you (which really turns me off with a lot of these experts). I'm not vegan however my fat (animal particularly) has decreased dramatically since Aug and I can confirm that it really does make a difference in your A1C results. My last A1C was around 6.5 (previous was in the mid 7's) and I'm hoping for even better numbers when by the end of Feb.
Not sure that I could drink Dr. Oz's 'brew', but I bet along with lowering your craving for food/sugar, it also keeps you regular! LOL

Dr. Oz’s Anti-Diabetes Drink
Received this in my email this morning and I thought I would pass it on. It is not something I will be making (too much vinegar for me) but it may help some members on the team that has high glucose numbers.
Learn how to make a nightly drink that will curb your diet and sugar intake.
Ingredients 8 oz water 4 tsp white or red wine vinegar 1 tsp psyllium husk fiber product
Directions Mix water and vinegar together in drinking glass. Pour psyllium husk fiber into glass and stir.
Drink every day before dinner to prevent the sugar spike and crash before bed.

Oh Susan feel better soon. I hate ice, I am so paranoid of slipping on the ice.
Dara, my main project is to exercise period. I was thrown off earlier this year when I tore a ligament in my knee, and recently I fell on some ice and hurt my back. I'm hoping to start slowly (10 minutes a day) and I know from previous experience that it will help both my blood sugars and also the rate of my weight loss. My last A1C was 6.4 and I think it is probably holding steady at that as my daily testings are good - but if I have anything that is not 'that good for me' it really reflects in my readings.
One caveat re the sauna. If you have high blood pressure, please do not go in a sauna without your doctor's okay. It may help your glucose readings, but it can shoot your bp through the roof. Hot tubs can do the same. Check with your doctor first.

Dara with you bumping up the Raw and drinking a daily Green Smoothie your numbers should be much lower.
I am listening to a Raw Webinar right now and the speaker was just talking about how sitting in a sauna will help your glucose numbers go down. Of you go to a gym and that gym has a sauna start taking some me time and sit in the sauna for a while. Bring a bottle of water in with you so you can stay hydrated.

How is everyone's diabetes doing? I need to get some new strips. I'm a little nervous to check. Its been awhile.
I need to up my exercise. That is what worked the best on my numbers. I took a 3 mile hike once and my numbers were the lowest ever. These 20 min walks are good, but not what I really need. I'm off to see if I can find a used treadmill. :)
Have a great evening!

Yes it is a major cereal grain, a member of the grass family. It is from the plant we get barley from. I like hulled barley because it is a whole grain opposed to pearled barley.
Barley is excellent for Diabetes but the article is talking about consuming it in powdered form.

Barley grass (Hordeum vulgare) has been a favorite among health enthusiasts for centuries. It is usually consumed as a powder or liquid, but is also used to make barley malt. Barley grass is considered a superfood, because of its incredibly dense nutritional profile. It contains a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids. Barley grass contains an abundance of chlorophyll, and is rich in Vitamins A, B, C, iron and calcium. It also contains high amounts of the electrolyte minerals potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Barley grass is rich in plant enzymes and antioxidants. Clinical studies involving the ingestion of barley grass powder show that it improves the health of diabetic patients. Barley grass has been proven to reduce cholesterol and can be used as a weight loss supplement.

Wyndy, good for you! I also feel that being watchful of my blood sugars helped me a lot over the holidays. I'm insulin dependent Type 2 and hate when my blood sugars are higher than 8. (I'm also Canadian). My good range is between 5 and 6 although I have had lows around 2.5 - not fun!! Unfortunately, I've been battling a flu bug the last week and my morning sugars have been at 9 which is high for me. I couldn't figure out what was causing these highs and then it dawned on me that it was because of being ill.
Managing diabetes certainly is a challenge!

Hi, while I was away and misbehaving myself by not staying on track, I did manage to stay pretty close to my blood sugar limitations. Occasionally I was under and had the resulting cold sweats and shakes and occasionally over with all those symptoms too. But in the main I was within my range. I'm Canadian so our measurements are different. I'm to be between 5 and 6. Sometimes I was 2 and sometime as high as 8.8 but never higher than that which is very good. 8.0 is considered diagnostic diabetes and under is considered pre-diabetic. I am regulating with Metforman twice a day. I'm sure that trying to stay in my range helped prevent the usual weight gain I accomplish when I'm depressed
It's the journey that matters Wyndy aka Quietude

When I did the Atkins diet I did lose weight but that was when the doctor noticed that my triglycerides were climbing....They finally topped out at 900 which almost gave my doctor a stroke, because I was eating so much processed meat. There is nothing healthier then the diabetic diet and I went to a meeting where an RN taught us healthing eating for diabetics. I have been diabetic for about 15 years and this year has been the first time I have kept it under control with diet and 3 months ago the dr took me off the meds and a 3 month ck a week ago proved that I was able to control it with diet. ..now if I can just get this weight to move. I believe being able to exercise now is going to be key for me. Wishing all of you the best on this journey to better health. Yvonne (release it 4 me) I see I am a 2nd yvonne.

A 15-year Chinese study found that for women, a diet that included all types of seafood helped protect them from type II diabetes, but for men, diabetes defense came only from eating shellfish. Further studies are needed to explore possible reasons for these gender-specific differences, but most researchers agree that it's the omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) in seafood that keep insulin -- the body's blood sugar-controlling hormone -- working well. (Related: Keep your blood sugar in check with this nutritional formula.)

Does Your Bologna Have A First Name? It May Be D-I-A-B-E-T-E-S
"A new study finds that processed products such as bologna and hot dogs can increase your risk of type 2 diabetes by almost half, and that by getting your protein from other rich sources such as nuts, whole grains and dairy low in fat, it will actually have the reverse effect.
A daily serving of 50 grams of processed meat, equivalent to one hot dog or sausage or two slices of bacon, was associated with a 51% increased risk of diabetes."

I got fairly good news from my Endocrinologist yesterday. She says I am being too hard on myself. My hgba1c was 7.3. I had lost 7 lbs and my feet looked great except for the blue color. The pain I have been having in my feet is probably ciirculatory. I thought it was because it did not feel like nephropathy pain. Before that my a1c's had ranged from 6.2 to 7.7. I think when I send in my next 2 weeks of blood sugars she is going to add glimapride to see if that helps. It made me feel a little better.

I will say '''i have been eating a lot of raw watermelon but I have always eaten a lot of watermelon in the summer so what makes this summer different? Hmmmmmmmmmmm the heat and humidity for longer spells this year plus higher temps. Come on today was 105 with 117 heat index in NJ. Who knows?
This time last year my blood sugars were on a roller coaster. Then they straightened out somewhat. Now they are all over the place again. I know that stress, illness, etc can effect your blood sugars. I am eating better now than I was 2 months ago. I am exercising the same. I wonder if this heat could be affecting my blood sugars. I go to my Endocrinologist on Monday and we are going to have to talk.

"Research published in the prestigious journal Diabetes Care (published by the American Diabetes Association) suggests that two ounces of nuts consumed daily when substituted for refined carbohydrate foods can prevent diabetes and the deadly complications caused by the disease. Researchers found that nuts eaten as part of a healthy diet can lower serum blood glucose and lipids to lower long-term blood sugar control as measured by the HbA1C blood test. Grab a big handful of almonds, walnuts, pecans or macadamias to ward off diabetes and metabolic syndrome, devastating conditions currently threatening human health and longevity."
I always eat sandwiches open-faced. It is fewer calories and carbs. I always eat a multi-grain bread. I like the flavor of this bread better than white bread anyway. I guess it is only getting accustomed to making healthy changes.

We might have diabetes but we can still eat tasty good things. Tomato Stack Fresh summer basil and tomatoes take a cheese sandwich from ordinary to fantastic.
This is just one of the many consequences of this ugly disease. My Dad died at age 54 so at the age of 72, I feel very lucky to still be here and still enjoy my family and my life.

I am sorry you have to deal with that. It is one of my biggest fears is to develop cirrhosis of the liver. Most people do not realize that is a side effect if Diabetes gets out of control. I hope you can beat it my dear friend.
Thank you for sharing that article with everyone. I have belly fat and a fatty liver which a doctor told me was now cirrhosis of the liver. I do not drink alcoholic beverages. I was told I had cirrhosis of the liver several years ago. At that time I had a liver biopsy and it was determined that it was a fatty liver. I am going to make an appointment with my GI doctor and discuss this with him.

Soluble Fiber Appears Key to Trimming 'Bad Fat'
"We know that a higher rate of visceral fat is associated with high blood pressure, diabetes and fatty liver disease," said the study's lead researcher, Dr. Kristen Hairston, assistant professor of internal medicine at Wake Forest Baptist in a news release from the medical center. "Our study found that making a few simple changes can have a big health impact."
That was a very interesting article and I love nuts, just about any kind. Thank you for sharing.

That was a good article to share. I love nuts and to know I can eat up to two ounces a day makes me a happy camper. I thought I needed to limit it to one.
I guess your question has already been answered by now, but yes it does take diabetics longer to heal, especially in the lower extremities. Diabetics also get nerve damage quicker. In fact, my doctor told me to never go barefooted. There is another kind of nerve damage diabetics have in the digestive tract. It is called gastroparesis. The motion that moves food through the GI tract slows down and makes it harder to digest any food you have eaten. It can also bring on heart disease and kidney failure.I think that is enough for my little brain.
