I'm just curious about all different drinks, protein, and after workout. It's all a bit overwhelming. Do you need to do P90X drinks? they seem very expensive. People are saying they lose weight on the shakeology drink. Is that because you are using it for a meal? Thanks so much. This is new to me.

I have been using the Garden Of Life Raw protein (chocolate flavor!)

Just ordered Vanilla GoL Protein, and Chocolate Sun Warrior protein. We'll see how they work!

I tried some Vega supplements, and I didn't mind the Vega One French Vanilla all-in-one drink -- but I have NOT liked the flavor of the various other things I've tried (Sport Berry Performance protein, regular Chocolate protein, Sport Electrolyte Hydrator) I choked through them because I had them, and they have great things in them -- but the flavor was really rough (and I eat/drink with no issue many things for health that my husband and others cringe at) I just plugged my nose and chugged.

On the other hand - hubby LOVED the Chocolate protein (though he said it tasted more like blueberries than chocolate...)

I had forgotten all about this thread! I have since my last posting tried E&E and LOVE it. Without it, some days I wouldn't make it through Fire 45! LOL I only use it on days I do HIITs or extended cardio like Fire 45 or 55.

Looks like a pretty good pre-workout mix! It has most of same basic ingredients as most pre-workouts (caffine for energy, arginine for NO, Glutamine for recovery). I wouldn't say that creatine is that questionable but it is absent from E&E. I do like that E&E doesn't have Geranium stem in it which definitely needs more testing but has found its way into a bunch of pre-workouts.

I would guess from the ingredients that you'll get a good clean boost without the rush that a lot of other pre-workouts would provide. If you're not familiar, by clean I mean not feeling chemically induced which can happen with some supplements.

Please do post a review when you get it! One thing I've definitely found with pre-workouts is that in the beginning it's be bees knees but at the end of the container it's not so great.

I see that you're a coach so you probably don't need this advice but anyone who uses caffine as a workout boost and doesn't know this should hydrate more since caffine does dehydrate and I've seen a lot of people use various supplements with caffine and not realize they're dehydrated until a headache has set in (which is what happens in a hangover).

I'm going to try the new E&E Energy & Endurance formula. I know several who have tried it and it really does the job, without all of the questionable ingredients.

I can get you some more information if any one is interested. :)

Hi everyone! Does anyone take a pre-workout supplement? I'm currently using MusclePharm Assault as my pre-workout and so far it's the best one I've used. I've been taking NOS supplements since NO-Xplode was the best thing on the market (years and years ago) and I've tried most of what's out there (Jakk3d, White Powder [not coccaine if you're not familiar], Dymatize, Neurocore, Presurge Unleashed, NO-Xplode) and so far Assault's been my favorite. I'm the last person to give medical advice but if you're looking to get the most out of a workout I would recommend looking into a pre-workout and of course consulting a physician. Google reviews and research all the ingredients and by all means don't take the company's word for it!

For my post-workout I use protein shakes and I'm in my second round of using SWATS Ultimate Spray. For my protein shake I stick to whey isolate or whatever's on clearance. The best taste I think is BSN's Syntha-6 and I think it's an OK shake but I like to just stay on the cheap and go with the generic whey stuff. SWATS Spray got my attention when a bunch of NFL-ers got in some heat for promoting it since it's on the borderline of being a PED which I personally think is ridiculous. I'll freely admit that I've taken some blatant PED's in my lifetime and honestly it was the dumbest thing I've ever done supplement wise. It took my body a while to normalize from using Testosterone supplements. Not the case with the spray which is an IGF-1 stimulant which is a human growth hormone which when used while working out promotes recovery. Additionally, I've found that when I'm using it my cardio improves dramatically. That's just my experience though.

If you're not taking anything at all, that's entirely your choice as well and I hope everyone does what they're most comfortable with and works best for their bodies. What works best for one person isn't necessarily what's going to work best for someone else.

It is recommended to drink the recovery drink every time you do P90X, no matter what day it is. And there is a reason for it. It works. :) Plus, it tastes amazing, like an Orange Julius, so why wouldn't you WANT to? LOL.

Like Tony says, "I workout just to drink the recovery drink". LOL So tasty.

I use the Lean Shakes from GNC. They are low in calories especially cal from fat. Also if you are need one with a higher protein content try Lean Body Shakes for Her. (I usually order this from drugstore.com since I am overseas but I'm sure you can find it else where) It is low in cals but has 30g of protein per serving.

As far as pre-workout I have used Jacked3D however I only recommend this to people who don't have any health problems, it is potent stuff! I have also used a product called Oxylite Pro it is a super thermogenic and again only for healthy people, it is a thermogenic so yes it will make you hot!

I take mine about an hr before I workout in the morning. A lot of people use whey protein to get more protein in their diet. I don't think there is a more beneficial time of taking it. I believe a lot of people take it to get something in their stomach that isn't heavy in the morning before working out. That is mostly why i take it before workout.

One thing I have recently learned though. The Whey Isolate is better digested than the the Whey protein.

When is it beneficial to have the whey protein drink? Every day? Only on lifting days? And what time of day or does that not matter?

I'm not a fan of chocolate, would regular 2% milk comparatively well as a recovery drink? I get plenty of protein in the run of day-but if I don't need the additional sugar/taste of chocolate milk, I'd rather not drink it!

hey! hey you! work it!

Personally, I do 8oz of 2% milk and 2 tbsp of hershey chocolate syrup. It is only 230 calories. Benefits are more beneficial than worrying about the calories.

I just started Week 2 Day 1 of P90X. So far, I have not used any supplements, so I have found this discussion to be very informative. I wake up @ 4AM to do my workout, so I think I am going to give the chocolate milk a try as my recovery drink. My question is: How much chocolate milk should I drink? 8 oz? I am trying to lose a good bit of weight, so I don't want to consume too many calories.

I think the chocolate milk is an alternative to a recovery drink. It doesn't really have anything to do with the weight loss. It is to replenish the carbs that were used during your workout.

Is the approach to a recovery drink different if you are trying to lose weight as well as tone?

Choclatae Milk is an alternative to all of the protein shakes?

We have been mixing in the blender after a workout, glass of skim milk, frozen fruit and 2 scoops of Whey protein for the both of us. If I replaced the skim milk with chocolate milk, would this work as a recovery AND protein drink in one since it sounds like from I have read that you need both. Even after reading a lot of the posts, I'm still confused I guess. Thanks!

MINENA1,

I am on my 4th day into phase one of P90X.

On the Teambeachbody.com website I saw one guy posted that when he does not have the P90x recovery drink on hand he supplements with 250mL apple juice or grape and about 10g protein powder, this will give you the same 4:1 ratio of carbs to protein that is in the P90X recovery drink, of course without the added creatine.

Also, my friend is an Elite Athlete for Body Lifting, she advised me of a good recovery drink, it is called Glycocarb by Interactive Nutrition, it is great as it does not have a lot of sugar and you need to replace glycogen stores after a workout. Here is a link ( it's canadian) but it shows you what is in it and why it is good, it is cheap too...
http://www.supplementscanada.com/popeyes
/product3667.html

In the P90x Program they suggest only as a post workout regimen so I am going to try this 1 serving of glycocarb + 12g or half a scoop of protein powder (I get the 12g of protien powder by dividing the 47g of carbs x 4 in the serving of glycocarb as per the P90x 4:1 ratio in there recovery drink) This is best taken 15-30 minutes after exercise no more than 1 hour.

I was going to purchase Con- Cret http://www.con-cret.com/ creatine as it is pure and needs no dosing schedule to add to my mix above and make my own recovery drink, however, as I am insulin resistant, my dietician reccomended no creatine as it is metabolized by the Kidney's and I may already be having a hard time with them per my insulin restistance.

Okay enough with this Novel!!! I am pumped and loving my first round of P90x!!!! Hope this helps you out a bit more!!

Also a great Protien is ISOFLEX http://www.isoflex.ca/
if you can get your hands on it it contains BCAA's which are also a great nutritional supplement when working out hardcore.

As you can see I am Canadian, and there are some great canadian products!!!! I just realized all of my products I've reccomended are CDN!!! :)

Enjoy!!

Yes, you should be drinking some type of recovery drink so your muscles won't hurt as bad and they will recover faster.

As far as the protein shake, that is up to you. Most people don't eat enough protein to meet their protein needs. You need the protein to build muscle. Your muscles help burn the fat twice as fast as your workout does. Don't worry about getting bulky. It is physically IMPOSSIBLE for females to get that way unless they are taking steroids. You should be eating/drinking 1 ounce for every lb you weigh. For most of us, it is very difficult to meet this by just eating the food. That's why we drink the protein shakes. Besides the fact they taste GREAT!

hope this helps,

Recovery drink replenishes the carbs you used during your workout. It also helps speed up recovery process for your muscles.

Protein shakes provide added protein to build your muscles.

Hi everybody! Ok, so today is my first day starting P90X & I've been reading through here & I have a question. What's the difference between a Recovery drink & a Protein Shake? I have protein powder I can drink after my workout, is that enough?

I use Shakeology, Whey protein and Dark Matter (recovery type drink) and in 3 weeks I will be starting to use Superpump250 as a pre workout drink

I talked with my doctor about my P90X routine and we talked about supplements I would need. She said to take a Solaray Twice Daily Multi-Energy Vitamin and a Vitamin D pill twice a day. Then she recommended a recovery drink after each workout (Amplified Wheybolic Extreme). I don't know if I like it very much though, so I might switch to the P90X Recovery Drink.

That is all I take for supplements though, but I have tons of energy and feel great, so it must be helpful.

It is time to shine!

If you don't get the answer here...and you won't from me emoticon Steve Edwards is my go to man...he has a live chat tomorrow on the beachbody site ( Chat with Steve Edwards
Mon, Aug. 23, 12:00PM PT/8:00PM ET ) Or you can post your question on his fitness advisory message board on Beachbody. I take a multi vitamin when I remember, eat nutritional bars for snacks on the go, or take Shakeology...I try to keep it pretty simple...Steve is a PhD and an extreme sports guy...he has consulted on all of the Beachbody products and supps since day one...and if he wasn't so darn cute I wouldn't believe he is so darn smart.

I meant to add that the one that i take is the tablets that do not cause h2o retention, it is not made from creatine monohydrate, it is the other derivative. And I do want to build muscle and that is why I am taking it. Also it is in the post workout drink as well but since I am making my own instead of buying the P90X one I have that plus add the others which are also in that drink....I did post the same question on the community board on Facebook where there are loads of body builders and pros on there as well..Just want to make sure I am doing what i need to to obtain what I want to achieve.... emoticon

I'm not too into those ones...but Creatine is more recommended for men in having big muscles...one of the draw backs to it is water retention...which most women try to avoid like the plague.

Okay, I have been taking arginine, glutamine and creatine caplets for abt a month, but I dont really feel like they are having an affect? What are they basically suppose to do?

when I played basketball, my trainer would always push us to drink chocolate milk as a recovery drink - he said it was the perfect balance of fat, sugar, and protein.

Keep it up!

Well...if you get up at 4:30 every day a nap around 5pm is not a bad idea! I don't know if I am unbiased about Shakeology as I am on of the first people to try it...I like it. It is very unsuspicious in it's ingredients. I used to use a super green supp and this one is much better. I like the extra super foods in it that help longevity.
