I noticed today that a search of "p90x" brought up a high intensity aerobics (p90x and insanity) result. I used it today since I haven't purchased a new HRM yet.

Is there anyway to petition SparkPeople.com to add this to their list of exercises?

I have a Polar FT7, but I really don't trust the calories burned number. Two laps around the park on my bicycle (13 miles) in 70 minutes (not exactly a speed record) and the FT7 read 820 calories. I have a hard time believing that.

I just have the timex personal heart rate monitor. I think I got it for about $36 online. It tracks my heart rate (it's really important to get one with a chest strap and not the one that you have to push a button every few minutes to get an accurate reading), length of exercise, calories burned and then like max heart rate and time in target range I think. I got it because all the reviews had it as really accurate and not very expensive.

Hopefully that was helpful!

The best way is the way TXHRT4U mentioned at the beginning of this post. The only issue, which I have raised with SparkPeople is the overstatement of Fitness Minutes! For every exercise you input, it will add 5 minutes to your Fitness Minutes which we all know, each exercise is less than 5 minutes!

:)

There are so many HRM out there...did anyone have some suggestions for one to purchase? I don't like guessing how many calories I am burning and would like a bit more accuracy. :) Super excited, started P90X Lean program this past Wednesday!

(sorry I am a bit slow...JUST saw the "new members read this" section where there are lots of suggestions for HRMs But thank you!!!!!!) duh

Ok so I got a HRM this last week and have been using it during my P90X workouts. My wife informed me that I shouldn't be counting the calories burned that HRM shows during strength training days. Why would that be? Calories burned are calories burned right?

I've substituted Bikram's Yoga in lieu of the Yoga-X and like the other exercises, merely use the HR Monitor.

I used a HRM for the first time today - I did Core Synergistics. The HRM said I burned 467 calories - I'm 48, 5'2" and weigh 119 lbs. It seems about right.

A lot of these methods of determining calorie burn should be pretty close. They use a mathematical equation that isn't personalized to you. If you don't have a specific goal or a time frame to reach that goal by, then these methods are ok. Just remember, you get what you pay for.

I have the same problem. I bought a simple HRM because I didn't need all the bells and whistles. It turned out to be a bit too simple, though, and doesn't have a calories burned function. I use http://www.braydenwm.com/calburn.htm

It's a program developed for a health study. I've compared it it to the readouts I get off of a treadmill and the SP calorie counts and they're all pretty close. I think it may be more accurate for things like a cardio/pilates class I took where my HR was between pilates and cardio.

I got myself a heart rate monitor and have been calculating calories burned with that, and I noticed that the calculations I get tend to be really close to the "vigorous calisthenics" calorie counts.

If you know your calories burned, enter your workout manually in the cardio section. Type in the name of your workout, time spent, and calories burned.

CAn anyone tell me how to track Yoga X? When I enter plain yoga it says I only burn 147 cals. an hour. Doing Yoga X I sweat too much and get a good workout which would seem to me to be more than 147 cals.

My HRM is a pretty basic one... tells you HR only and nothing of calories burned. So... how would I enter the P90X cardio stuff into SP? Is the vigorous calisthenics a fair enough way to record it? I'd like to get credit somehow for all that sweat!

The way I do my workout in spark is to open the track exercise window then click on the manage workouts tab. From there click on "create a new workout" name it as the X workout you are doing, enter each lift or move then save it. You only need to do this once for each workout and it will be available to you the next time you do the routine. When you add it to you fitness page all the lifts are added individually.

Gracie - To make it easier on yourself, two options I would recommend:

Record it as circuit training and/or vigorous calisthenics. Depending on which DVD you're doing, IMHO, these two classifications fit P90X to a T. (sometimes a mix of the two)

Get a HRM to track calorie burn and enter calories manually.

I do C4CHRISTINE. The way I see it, as far as SP is concern it counts for fitness minutes. I input it manually by name of workout, time for workout, and how many calories.

I use my HRM for all of my workouts (ST & cardio).

hmmm...I have my heart rate monitor on during workouts and I have just entered it as "cardio" "enter calories manually"
Then I write P90X and the number of cals I burned for that day.

I know it's not all "cardio" but isn't the point being the calories in the end?

Although, if you are using SP to track your reps, I guess entering separately is good. But I just use my worksheets.

Anyone else use my uber lazy method?

I track the individual exercises to track the lifts and weights and to get calories burned I track it as 45-50 minutes of circuit training... since that is what it is.

Trust the process. Do right, things go right.

Maybe this is the lazy way, but I record it ALL as vigorous calisthenics. However, I don't count the minutes spent warming up and cooling down that way. Those I just count as "walking a 15-minute mile".

I record CoreX, CardioX, and PyloX as Calisthenics: vigorous...I would think KenpoX is equivalent to Turbo Jam, which is listed under exercises.

But the weight training would definately need to be added individually and saved.

DIET and EXERCISE WORK - Believe it !!

To record your fitness for P90X you have to create custom workouts.

To create custom strength workouts:
1.) Click on Track Strength Exercises
2.) Click on "Manage Workouts"
3.) Click on "Create a New Workout"
4.) Name the workout and click Submit
5.) Add exercises (I typed the name in)
6.) Repeat step 6 for each exercise in the workout
7.) Save the workout as a favorite.

To Create Custom Cardio Workouts:

1.) Click "Add Cardio"
2.) Click "Manually Enter Calories Burned"
3.) Enter the name of the workout
4.) Enter the time you spent working out
5.) Enter the calories burned
6.) Check "Add this Exercise to my Favorites"
7.) Click "Add Exercise"

Once these steps are done, once you want to use them again in the future, you only have to go to the respective "Favorites" section, choose them from the drop down and use them.
