Hmmm, that's a good question. I think the truth is I feel pretty good on an unbalanced diet as long as it's whole foods. Processed stuff makes me feel bleh to outright sick, but I _feel_ pretty good even if I go all week eating nothing but oranges and brussels sprouts (which I have been known to do). I _believe_, however, at least some of the tenets of nutrition science, which would suggest that nothing but oranges and brussels sprouts is a recipe for deficiency if I keep it up, and that's what motivates me to try to balance things more. It's like wearing my seat belt - I've never actually had a problem, but maybe I don't want to test that...

So did the balanced meals help you feel better fueled? Any difference?

Yay for no more migraines and your trip to Europe! Have a great time.

I'm feeling good about closing out the month of May. I'm behind, but not horrifyingly behind on the half training. I've been eating balanced meals more often than not (although still skipping dinner more often than I probably should) and doing really well at the end of the month with my sleep/wake schedule. It helps that the sun comes up early. Starting to think about June goals...

Look at you making all kinds of progress and having fun too! I think finishing running and being uninjured is more important than speed. Keep at it!

This has been a good Europe trip planning weekend for me. I have some hotels and B&Bs picked out. My mother in law/travel partner will be down to visit this coming weekend so I want to have things paired down so we can start picking without being overwhelmed.

My new migraine meds are also working really well. Now I just have to worry about how often I have them. If I can get the frequency down, I'll be golden. It feels sooo good to be able to think clearly.

Pretty good week for the May goals. Thursday night I went to New York to see a Moth show with one of my friends from college, so dinner was a black bean burrito on the southbound train and I didn't get to bed until 3 am. But the rest of the week I've had a good salad or roast veggies, and my carbs have been rice, quinoa, and sweet potatoes. I'm feeling well-fueled. Still behind on the half training, but I didn't lose any more ground this week, and I'm feeling strong - like I'll be slower than I'd like, but I'm going to be able to finish this thing running, and that would be quite an accomplishment for me. And I have a date Monday evening with the telescope-loving cyclist engineer - kinda excited.

That sounds successful and kinda entertaining. Good job!

I have been having a good workout week. My new migraine meds are working well so I am able to keep going as needed. Yah! I've been doing a good job tracking my migraines as well. So in 3 months my DR and i can have an intelligent chat.

I might get very fat if I had to choose between working out and spending time with Mark, but I guess I don't have to worry about it since Mark presents no such time demands. emoticon

Speed dating was amusing. I was pretty relaxed, 'cause if I made a fool of myself, I never had to see any of these people ever again. And the format played to my strengths. I'm not the pretty face you notice at the other end of the bar, but I have totally mastered the art of quickly making people feel at ease in a conversation. At the mid-evening break, I went outside to enjoy the fading sunlight and had most of the men I'd spoken with follow me out - quite the ego trip. You all will understand the appeal of the one guy I really liked - actually someone I started talking to during the opening "mingle" time before the actual speed dating started: electrical engineer with an appealing sense of humor who'd put 50 miles on his bike earlier that day and chatted intelligently about the world's best research telescopes during the break.

Note to anyone else who ever tries the speed dating thing: the organizers tell you if you're not sure about someone, go ahead and check the "yes" 'cause you can always end the conversation later, but you can't start the conversation later if you check "no." I wish I'd only checked off the one guy - it was already clear he was going to check me - and now I find myself thinking that I don't even want to try to juggle dating six new guys at once. I should have thought that through instead of obediently following the directions.

A social life does make doing healthy things hard. I get conflicts with that a lot, especially since many of my work outs are over lunch.

Have fun at the speed dating, let us know how it goes. Does it have a theme or is it random people?

Rain is my nemesis running, too. I don't really mind if my legs and arms are wet - I can always wear a breathable shell that keeps me warm enough. But when my feet get wet, running is just miserable. I wonder how other people get around that, 'cause sometimes it rains for a week straight.

Anyway, far from my goals in the past 24 hours. Mark popped into town and asked if I wanted to go shoot pool, so I came in from the garden, shoved some carrots into my face instead of an actual meal, and went out with him. Fail on the balanced dinner. Got home at 10:30 so when I woke up at 4:00 I had just no interest in getting out of bed. Fail on the sleep schedule reset. And then when I finally did get up at 5:15, I wanted to get a run in quickly so I didn't eat breakfast or drink enough water before heading out, so it was a pretty lethargic run. That said I DID get my training run in. And seeing Mark was fun. And tonight I'm going to a speed dating event that's supposed to be over in time for my bedtime, so maybe I'll get it all right tomorrow.

Have a good day, Loren!

Indeed. I was not very active this week. But! I did go to my doctor and we talked about my migraine issues. Now we have a plan. Migraines make working out miserable :(. So hopefully this will help. I have three months to try it out so track track track track.

I will not make the workout board this month, but that isn't going to stop me from going. :). I now have a plan for June, gonna make that board.

Renovations stopped this week. We needed to pick up molding, and it rained all week. Not good for transporting wood. Maybe this weekend we can get that moving again.

Yay for good vacation.

I've gotten off track this month. Dinner tonight was just pasta salad - hardly a balanced plate. Ran pretty strong, but I'm behind my training plan. And I'm posting this shortly after midnight, so odds aren't good for a 4 am wake up.

Bad habits are so hard to reset!

I enjoyed my vacation, so step 1 is done. It does making getting on the attendance board at the gym harder ;).

I love the idea of an attendance board at your gym - I may suggest that at mine!

I'm 2 days for 3 on the balanced meal thing - gotta get that right tonight!

I think balanced meals are a good idea!

For me for May.
First- enjoy vacation.
Second - get on the attendance board at the gym (12 minimum)
Third - get the big part of renovations done ( this is month 5 and it needs to be DONE)

Simple!

Y'know that plate diagram that's 50% produce, 25% whole grains and 25% protein? I'm gonna try to organize all my meals that way for the month of May. My ex was here Saturday night/ Sunday morning, and because of his diabetes, I'm always really careful to prep meals that way with him, but when I'm cooking for just me, I tend to get lazy and eat meals that are just one thing: just blueberry yogurt for breakfast or just roasted brussels sprouts for dinner. Those are good, but hardly balanced, and it's time to recommit.
emoticon
Still with the half training, I've been inconsistent when the weather's been icky. So my days will start with a check of the weather forecast for the next three days. I hate running in the rain, but if it's going to be three days in a row of rain, I gotta get out there anyway. I can't afford to miss any more days. And my Strawberry Shortcake 10K is almost here... www.active.com/plympton-ma/running/d

I do fine with how much sleep I get, but I've become insanely irregular, living on a 72 hour cycle. Back to up by 4:00 and that first hour is MINE; at work by 6:00; fatigue will dictate what time I crash in the evenings. Long days are back and I don't want to spend my good sunlit hours napping when I could be playing in the dirt.
I think what's most useful to me about this monthly goal setting is it forces me to pick just three things that are the most important to me. Not ready to be done with April yet, but excited about May.
