My main downfall is starbucks carmel Macchiato with ice . If i dont drink one all I do is think about it . I eat almost perfectly paleo except a couple of these a week . I wonder if it is something I can keep doing or if I should stop. It seems to help me throughout the day making it easier to eat right the rest of the time

Hi Karen - Great websites that have been recommended for you by Dee - just caution when going 100% by Friday - espcially with the holiday in there. Depending on if Paleo is a radical change, you may want to go a little slower. I myself am an all or nothing person and Paleo wasn't a big change but I went through a period of adjustment with my work outs - Cardo was impossible to do at the intensity I was use to. I can still run but the killer cardio classes were leaving me drained and light headed - apparently carb flu. Anyway if you are not feeling 100% just give yourself a bit of time. You will feel better!

This week (month, actually) grass fed or pastured meats only. Veggies are mostly organic but are at least mostly local. There will be avocado, but I'm not worried about that.

Got rid of the ticker cuz my scale decided to flatter me unduly. I haven't re-gained, just got a better, honest, scale.

Just because you steam it, doesn't mean you can't add herbs and spices. (A gripe at those insipid restaurant "healthy choice" menu selections.)

Following a mostly low-carb Paleo plan during the week. Still working on moving towards grass-fed meats and organic vegetables. I take the weekends off. Enjoying the results.

This is going to be week 3 for me as well.
Cravings for refined sugars - gone!
Cravings for carbs - every once in a while.....usually if I sit with it, an emotional need that is not being met surfaces.

So far, most of my complaints are gone (not coughing up stuff in a.m. anymore, clear headed/thinking, soreness in back gone). I'm amazed.

6 weeks to form a habit huh? I always thought it was 21 days, but I'll keep it going. I'll do anything to make this new change in my lifestyle permanent.

I had my first burger with out cheese and bun. It wasn't the same but I have survived. Starting my third week on paleo lifestyle tomorrow, I'm feeling good and my headaches are lessening so I might as well keep with it! I have heard it takes 6 weeks to make a habit stick, so I'm half way there!

Hi everybody,
I am working towards completing a 30 day Challenge, and I thought I would bring my accountability here. Perhaps I can check in a couple of times a week. I'm still at it. Yesterday was difficult, because I would have gone for anything with sugar. I made myself frozen berries with nuts and a drizzle of honey, and it took the edge off the craving. The calories were up though, but I remembered some advice I was given last week, that I should eat if I was hungry. I was also really emotionally energised all day yesterday, but physically I was exhausted. I did some long walks last week, and some good work outs. I spent a lot of the day resting. I read somewhere that sort of thing can happen following a Paleo lifestyle. Some days you just need a rest.

Kindness,
Danuta

Smile! Today is the tomorrow you hoped for yesterday! :D

Back at it again today...

Good night sleep
Short run before breakfast
Hot, solid breakfast
Plan for lunch and dinner in place
Drinking extra tea and water
Taking AM and PM supplements
Organizing and de-cluttering my space
Quality time with family
Turn off electronic early and enjoy wind down time before bed

That's my plan and I'm sticking to it!

Where did everyone go???

I did my 200 mile relay this weekend and managed to remain Paleo and chocolate free! Quite a victory considering the places we stopped along the way!

I'll be back to logging my food tomorrow...weighed in at 148.2 this morning which is .5 pound lower than my post Hawaii weight but still hoping to drop another 3-8 pounds over the next coupe weeks!

Major Victory today! Had Subway salad at the food court instead of my favorite burger and fries that was right there! Motivated by dress shopping! It was very depressing!

Hello Everyone!

I feel like I have been gone forever! I was doing a 12 week Biggest Loser challenge which ended on 4/4 and I have been eating like crazy every since! I've still been 90-95% Paleo and 100% chocolate free but the quantity of food has not been good! I've been stress cooking and stress eating!!! I succumbed to trail mix again...and not even good trail mix, it's the crappy kind you get at 7-11!!! I told my BF no more trail mix until after Ragnar...which by the way is 1 week from today!

Anyway...today has been a good food day and if I go to sleep early enough I should be okay!!! Took my supplements today...for the first time in over a week! Not going to dwell in the past, just moving forward!!!

13 Friday Day 50 chocolate free
8:00 AM Andrea session 7
9:15 AM SpeedX
10:30 AM 4 slices bacon and green protein smoothie after workout
2:00 PM Burger salad with bacon and avocado
5:00 PM Orange and kombucha
6:30 PM Rib eye with onions, mushrooms and peppers and sautéed banana squash

Vance carbs ARE addictive, especially the refined variety! I don't even really like candy as much as fruit, but that never stops me from eating a bag of peanut butter cups once I get started! I forbade DH from brining one of those Reester Bunnies anywhere near me this Easter! I would eat it all in one shot for sure once I got going! I am actually way happier with some good fresh berries most of the time! My other downfall: popcorn! I will actually eat a giant bowl of popcorn for dinner sometimes. I don't see that as bad as the straight sugar though...although it is still a lot of carbs!

I identify with the impact of sleep or its lack. I feel like I need to make myself get a better biorythym going in that department. Earlier to bed is my goal. Cindy congrats on making it through one of the annual candy-fest seasons without falling short of your goals!! I admire that. :) My goal was to stick to dark chocolate and fruit for the season. I did succumb to the temptation to one of those malted egg balls mentioned. Thankfully it was a fair trade with one of my children for a dark chocolate, which kept me from eating more. Dove dark in exchange for a bird egg? mmmm.........no. No more. lol I did eat my chocolate faster than I wanted.. so poor eating habits still in place where it comes to chocolate. I had a very thin friend once who told me she was going on the chocolate diet. When I asked her what this meant, she said that she would give herself ONE piece of chocolate if she did well on her diet all day.. at the end of the day. Lol. Oh for such self-control! lol

My commiseration is around sleep. No question my ability to stay on plan, in all areas of my life, is impacted by sleep. I can also say that many people, including me, find some carbs addicting. If I eat processed carbs or grains one day, I definitely crave them the next day and feel hungrier.

When I can stay off processed carbs and grains, I don't have the cravings - what a concept.

Oh ya - gotta get to bed cause it affects my willpower and intentions.

Ugh, I had a horrible eating weekend - my second in a row. I need to find some strategies to avoid binging when I go off track so I don't go WAY off track. Does anyone else have a problem with this? I mean, once I let loose this weekend I think I ate every carb within a 5 mile radius. It is worse when I am tired, like all decision-making abilities go out the window - and of course I worked all weekend and was exhausted. Any ideas or commiseration?

I have stayed on track all week and avoided all my junk cravings! Was in the bulk foods and all I could smell was peanut butter cups, one of my binge foods! I left out of there in a quickness!

Have a great weekend!

I can't be trusted around bags of chocolate either, I feel your pain! I don't like dark chocolate as much (or at least it takes a lot less to satisfy a craving) so I keep that in the freezer and have some if I am desperate, like today - gotta love PMS! I completely understand about the night sweats, etc. from overdoing it on the carbs - I ate out last week with friends and literally felt HUNGOVER in the middle of the night! It is enough to keep me on better track though once you realize how much it affects the body.

Today:
0900: scrambled eggs (2 eggs, 1 egg white) with bell pepper, banana peppers, tomato, onion, ham and cheese
1100: dove dark chocolates
1600: gluten free Lara Bar
1900: lean beef patty
2200: don't know yet, probably some veggies before work tonight, I think cucumber with oil/vinegar

No workout today, was feeling really sore from the past two days' workouts so I took a rest day

This past week I did myself in by buying a yearly treat for myself. I bought not one, but 2 BIG bags of the candy coated chocolate malted milk balls shaped like eggs. It's something you only see at Easter time and last year I didn't buy any at all. I really shouldn't have this year either as over the last 7 days I've eaten almost 3.5 lbs of the candy. The 2 bags total 4.5 lbs and I might have 1 lb left. If it's more than that I'd be surprised. I get started on them and eat til I literly make myself sick from the sugar. I've put the rest up in a cabinet out of sight but I may end up throwing them out so I won't be tempted to finish them off. As long as they're in the house, I know they'll be calling my name. I never should have bought them but I did it during a weak moment. Normally I don't buy candy as I have severe hot flashes and night sweats from eating sugar. So you can imagine how I've been feeling this past week. Anyway, I won't be buying them again and I will probably end up throwing the rest away so they aren't calling to me. Hubby won't eat them as they hurt his mouth. Anyway, I won't be eating sweets the rest of the month so hopefully I'll see a big change in my numbers by the end of the month.

Ugh, today was much harder. We went to dinner at my brother-in-law's house and he served pasta - just pasta, sauce and sausage. I did not know how to handle it so I just added more sausage to my plate than I normally would in hopes of eating less pasta. I still ate quite a bit however and of course came back and felt lethargic afterwards so I did not workout. Second day paleo fail! :) I am trying to be positive and brought a salad for work tonight and will get back on track immediately.

Today- (by the way i work nights so if my eating times are weird that is why)
0230: huge salad with shredded carrots/cabbage, tomato, black olives, chicken and hardboiled egg - olive oil vinagrette dressing.
0430: second hardboiled egg
0830: Paleo cereal - strawberries, blueberries, coconut milk, walnuts and shredded unsweetened coconut.
1000: three pieces ham with 3 slices cheese
1800: pasta, tomato sauce and italian sauage. Chocolates for dessert (oops!!!)

I am already starving (damn Carbs!!!) Hopefully better tomorrow!!!

Hi All! I am new here and new to Paleo/Primal eating. I have read the Primal Blueprint and the New Rules of Lifting for Women (NROLFW) and am ready to start changing my lifestyle!

I am currently 5'4 and 135 but would like to lose 5-10 pounds or increase my muscle tone. I started eating more protein recently because I was hungry ALL. THE TIME. and began reading up on how carbs cause major insulin spikes - I think that is why I was constantly starving. So here I am! I am starting off with a Primal Diet (just switching to full fat cheese and greek yogurt and switching to coconut milk instead of cow's milk) and seeing how I feel and may go full-Paleo in the future.

Today: (nonworkout day as I felt very fatigued today)

0900: Paleo cereal (Coconut milk, walnuts, unsweetened coconut, strawberries and blueberries)
1600: Greek yogurt
1830: Bacon wrapped chicken breast stuffed with ham/cheese, steamed cauliflower/broccoli/carrots
2000: Gluten free Lara Bar

Tomorrow I plan to start Phase One of NROLFW and I will keep posting here, reading everyone's posts keeps me motivated!!!

Checking in after the weekend! Nutritionally, this weekend was fairly amazing. I made some awesome stuffed eggplant and Paleo tacos(beef, bacon, tomatos, spices and swiss chard, yum). Yesterday I managed to pass on the giant brownie ice cream sunday of doom my friends ordered at the restaurant we went to. I was too full of steak and broccoli to even want a bite of the giant whip-cream and sin-covered temptation. The whole no sugar thing is working out quite well for me so far. I did have half a glass of white wine with my dinner, but since I was very low on carbs for the rest of the day, I figured I can indulge there a bit. The only downside was my workouts - I got in about 30 minutes of yoga on Saturday, but the only physical thing I did on Sunday was hike through downtown Chicago on the way to the restaurant in frigid cold. The weather seems to have improved, so I am hoping for a nice relaxing 2-3 mile jog this evening, maybe with some sprints thrown in for fun.
Egalitaire, you are so right, low carb "diet" is not a diet in the normal sense of the word. However, the word diet comes from the greek word for life, so technically it is a lifestyle... and Paleo is pretty much becoming a lifestyle for me. Thank you so much for your support! Since I am not getting and/or expecting much support from my family at home, the encouragement from all of you means so much to me.

Noone expects perfection, especially if you don't have the food issues like some of us. Enjoy your time as healthfully as possible! Even the Paleo Gurus cheat sometimes!

Oh, PS I am a little off track as far as some gluten free toast, beans and real butter (not good for the dairy allergy!) this weekend. We were out at a fire department fundraiser, so I caved. I also used the leftover salt potatoes with the real butter for homefries this morning.

Personal Goal: NO grains in April.

Two exceptions -- I finished off some Japanese-influenced stuff with Ponzu sauce in it for brunch this morning. Otherwise very healthy food and I don't believe in wasting stuff already made, unless it is, say, a Pop Tart.

Dinner at a friend's April 21st. I'll decline desserts and pastas and breads, but if something has wheat in it as a minor condiment, y'know I'm so NOT going to ask him to make me or provide for me a Special Meal. There is living the plan, and there is rude. (I have no overt sensitizations nor allergies nor religiously-oriented food maps at this moment -- well other than a severe reaction to fiddlehead ferns...)

Got rid of the ticker cuz my scale decided to flatter me unduly. I haven't re-gained, just got a better, honest, scale.

Just because you steam it, doesn't mean you can't add herbs and spices. (A gripe at those insipid restaurant "healthy choice" menu selections.)

Hey Gang,

It's been a while since I checked in!!! I'm in vacation in Hawaii and so far I have been able to remain Paleo with the exception of 2 sugar and gluten free mochi bars which I found at a local farmers market in Wikiki!!! While finding grass fed beef has been impossible, I've been doing my best!!! Still chocolate free...today is day 36!!!

Hey Lillith - congrats on the great results. I have/am having a similar experience. Pretty much all good from the get go. I have found this nutritional formula (I really hesitate to use the diet word due to all the connotations) very sustainable for me. Haven't yet seen a good reason why I won't be able to do it for the rest of my life - unless the USDA, in it infinite wisdom, outlaws dietary fat. I eat between 80 and 120g or carbs a day, mostly from veggies - about 10 servings in total.

Love your idea about what you're telling your family - even if not formally diagnosed, I suspect that's true for me as well.

Stay the course and,

Grok On!!!!!!!!!!!

Good morning! Today marks my 1 month aniversery of Primal/Paleo eating. I also have given up sugar and sweets cold turkey. From the get-go, I did not have any cravings, although I started dreaming about stuffing my face with cake... must be psychological. After week 2 Ive been a lot less hungry then I usually am. My stomach upsets dissapeared without a trace. The best part for me was that along with the stomach upsets, the severe, chronic migranes that plagued me most of my adult life dissapeared as well. Around week 2 I started tracking my food, just to see where I was at. Turns out I am at about 20-80 grams of carbs a day, usually on the low end of things. I have enough energy to scare my friends and coworkers, and I am slowly but surely dropping lb. I dropped a pound and a half within the last 4 days. I've backed off on the intensity of my workouts (more or less...). I only do 2 days of crossfit, 2 days of sprints and 2 days of strength, which for me is pushups/situps. If I didn't have to run and push/situp for work, I would probably have forgone that as well. I did up my walking and yoga. I do mini yoga sessions during the weekdays and longer ones on the weekends, if the weather is nice, usually outside. When I started this, I was only going to do it for a month to correct all the issues I had with my stomach. Now, I think I will stick to it for as long as I am able. I don't miss dairy, legumes, grains and sweets at all. By the way, I told my family I am gluten-intolerant. It cut down drastically on them forcing food on me, or complaining about my wierd "diet".So, so far so good! emoticon

Hi everyone :) I saw the subject and thought "accountability" just what I need. My workouts are strong but they could be stronger is I stuck to good clean eating and avoid processed food at all costs. So I figured I would fit right in. I think the overall concepts of the Paleo Diet is great and I have followed this for years but loosely. Time to tighten it up :)

FAIRIE we post whenever we feel like, no real set time.

As for eggs, I make mine ahead and portion them in small containers. I posted a recipe here on the recipe thread for breakfast casserole or I do hard boiled eggs or egg salad, which I also make ahead. I wrap the egg salad in Bibb lettuce and/or ham. Protein shakes are really not optimal, especially when trying to avoid dairy and chemicals. They all have something undesireable (whey, casein, legumes, rice, preservatives sweeteners, etc..) except the pure egg white protein and that does not mix so well. It gets very clumpy.

Fell free to post whenever you like!

My Husband and I went out last night with an old friend from N. Carolina and I drank...I drank a lot. I gained 1 1/2 pounds and feel like....you know what. Its not worth it. I hate taking steps forward only to screw up and take 2 back. Lesson learned for me.

Looking for a buddy near Foster City or San Mateo CA.

Hello Everybody,

I have been eating Paleo off and on for a few years and I know how much better I feel when I am ON! So I love that you have an accountability page. My goal is to shed these extra 40 lbs by October or at least loose enough inches to fit into my wedding dress ;) after that the goal is to get back to pre-graduate school size 10-12 an 8 would be great but I have NEVER been that small. I am hoping I can do it. How often do you post to each other? I am pretty decent with the diet but I need to amp up the exercise to work with the diet. Though for the mornings that I just can't find the time to cook eggs (which are my favorite) can somebody recommend a good protein drink that would taste good with coconut milk?

I have been doing well again after a gluten free grain and dairy slip last Wed. Have been working out a lot, and eating well! Body fat is down even if the scale isn't!

Thank you all! Cindy, I have always been a 5 meal a day girl...and my body tends to metabolize faster that way. I just need something to fill in my mid morning and mid afternoon snacks. I eat plenty, and I'm not really hungry for a snack, but I need it to make sure to not be hungry later. I find that if I never get hungry, I never binge. It's a great routine for me!

Manda if you are feeling like you need a lot of snacks you are not eating enough at meals probably. Also try adding some fat...For running, I recommend reading Paleo Diet for Athletes. Very enlightening.

Hi Manda,

I try to make some snacks on the weekend that will keep for some or most of the week so I have a variety available.

I like to do some "salady" type things - one of my favourites is a mix of radish, cucumber, ginger and green onion with some homemade mayo.

Basically by combing ingredients it feels like variety, even though they may be the same veggies. I make batches of cauliflower rice that last for days and then do different things with the rice. Eat it with Mediterranean spices or ginger and some crushed pistachios, or with a nice home-made salsa on top.

Hard-boiled eggs travel well, and are filling for me. I make primal granola from nuts, cheese and seeds.

Well, those are some of the things that work for me. Just keep experimenting.

I have had a good day today...I'm just struggling to find some good variety in snacks. I need to eat at least 1200 calories a day as I am a runner and have been weight lifting on top of that. I love this diet and I love how I feel on it, I just need a bit more variety...right now its mainly raw veggies to crunch on and sometimes I'll have a piece of fruit and some almonds. I am a week into this and don't really have any craving for breads or starches, so that's great, I just want a bit of variety in my life! LOL. =)

I use coconut oil or grass fed butter for any high heat cooking! When frying eggs I turn the fire low to cook them more slowly making sure the oil does not get too hot and the eggs stay soft.

Hi Diane - sounds like a healthy diet to me - there are some authors - Mark Sisson being one, who would advocate against using flax seed oil for cooking - it oxidizes - here's an excerpt from Mark's blog

"I mentioned the seed and its oil a few times, and, after being initially supportive of flax consumption, I now recommend minimizing intake. People generally use flax oil as an Omega-3 supplement, rather than for cooking – and this is a good choice, seeing as how flax is almost entirely made of PUFAs, which are prone to rancidity and oxidation when exposed to heat. Meat eaters, though, would be better off just taking fish oil. The DHA and EPA in fish oil are far more useful than the ALA in flax seed oil. Strict vegetarians, have at it – just don’t use flax seed oil to sautee your tofu."

19% MUFA
24% Omega-6 PUFA
47% Omega-3 PUFA (from ALA)
8-9% SFA

Happy Sunday to Everyone!

It been a good week for me! My biggest obstacle is the evenings when I watch my nieces at my brothers house! There are so many things at his house that I don't have at mine! The last time I was there I was snacking on chocolate to the point of making myself nauseous! Last night, I stopped at Whole Foods to pick up dinner on my way over and bypassed the bulk candy bins!

01 Thursday-Day 7 chocolate free
9:00 AM Scrambled eggs with red peppers and onion, raw tomato with eggplant dip
12:30 PM Run 5.5 miles with hills
2:00 PM Sliced ham, slaw and roasted eggplant from WholeFoods deli

emoticon Diane, I really went off the rails today! Gluten free pizza and gluten free beer! My stomach feels like a bowling bal and it is TOTALLY MY fault! I know better!! Yet sometimes the Casein addict inside there makes me do things like this! About once a month or so at least. I am working on making it longer in between at least!!

Let's just pick ourselves p and get back on track! NOW!!

For Scribblewoman or anyone wanting less caffeine in their tea - try Rooibas tea - its and herbal tea that doesn't taste like and herbal tea (I have never been able to drink the standard bearers of herbal teas, but like this one). Republic of Tea has a great mix with natural vanilla flavoring.

Well, I did well mostly this week, then i all fell apart the last 2 days. I never thought of myself as a stress eater, but I have become one apparrently. I cannot get full!! And I have been under a lot of stress at work...My only non-paleo confession so far is some gluten free pretzels. Just too much food in general!

I'm going to be trying a couple new supplements that I learned about that the seminar over the weekend...

LV-GB Complex | Designs for Health
LV-GB Complex provides support for liver and gallbladder function by providing lipotropic substances to aid in the elimination of fatty substances from the liver, as well as promoting proper bile flow (i.e.: L-methionine, L-taurine, inositol and choline, beta carotene, ox bile). Critical catalysts of hepatic detoxification enzymes are also included (i.e.: pyridoxyl-5-phosphate form of B6, folic acid, and B12).

These are mixed with a combination of hepatic (aid the liver) and cholagogue (aid bile flow) herbs, such as Milk Thistle, Greater Celandine, Dandelion, Fringe Tree, Artichoke, and Beet root for optimal processing and elimination of toxins.

Dandelion (Taraxicum) is a well-established cholagogue (stimulates bile flow), diuretic and appetite stimulant. Milk Thistle (Silymarin) is a well-researched protective herb for the hepatocytes (liver cells), and has even demonstrated the ability to promote the regeneration of liver cells in subjects with hepatitis and other liver disorders. It can also aid in the flow of bile to promote optimal gallbladder function.

Greater Celandine (Chelidonium majus), Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus), and Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) can reduce pain in the bile ducts and the gastrointestinal tract by virtue of their antispasmodic properties, and they are often traditionally used in liver and gallbladder disorders, including non-obstructive gallstones. Beet Leaf (Beta vulgaris) is a valuable source of betaine (trimethylglycine), which can act to reduce fatty infiltration and degeneration of the liver.

LV-GB Complex is designed to also support optimal digestion and assimilation of essential fats and fat soluble vitamins making this formula appropriate for people who have had their gall bladder removed surgically and people suffering from skin disorders.

Who Should Take LV-GB Complex™?
People without a gallbladder, people needing to improve liver or gallbladder function, those with inability to handle fatty foods and those with bloating, gas, GI distress, or skin problems. This synergistic formula will aid fat digestion and improve absorption of fat soluble vitamins. This product is excellent for detoxification support.

Who Should Not Take LV-GB Complex™?
people experiencing acute upper abdominal pain or are known to have a bile duct obstruction should not take LV-GB Complex.

How Should You Take LV-GB Complex™?
Take 1 capsule with each meal, a total of 3 capsules daily, unless directed otherwise.

And...

I don't cut back on fruits. Now, I am staying away from super sugary fruits, but I think I have about 4 servings of fruit a day and 4-7 servings of veggies a day. My fruit has replaced my sweets. I have lost weight all week (this is my first week) and have been consuming around 30% carbohydrates...I really have had a very even split of macros...30-37% of everything. I am seeing great weight loss too. Already 4.5 lbs down in just 5 days.

GOOSE I drink coffee. I don't see anything wrong with it if t is not bothering you in any way.

NEVERGIVEUP if you are concerned about probiotics, why don't you make almond milk yogurt. Truly it is not good to eat something regularly you know you have an intolerance to. Or there is dairy free Kefir, kombucha, and various other yogurts made from other than dairy sources. And supplements as well. As for fruit, it dependson if you are trying to lose. If you want to lose weight it should be minimized.

I am amazed at how easily I have been able to stick to this diet. It has been great. I have been able to fill up, eat great foods that have really helped clear and regulate my body! I have one glass of milk for breakfast, but no other dairy each day. I have kept my coffee in the mornings. I just can't give it up yet. I was dragging the first two days and needed to add it back (I wake up at 4:30 to work out every day). I have done research on the caffeine and it seems to be good so long as you don't get too much. I am going to stick with just a 12 oz cup of coffee for now. I am on day 4 right now and I really haven't had any major carb cravings! I am so excited. I have also had a great reduction in water weight, already 4 lbs down! It's amazing how much out bodies hold on to the bad stuff!

Cindy, thank you for all the advice, I am lactose intolerance. I can not handle dairy. My stomach is very very sensitive. My doctor want me to do allergy test that is going to cost me $1200.00. I can't afford that test. My naturopathy doctor recommend me this diet. I want to feel better and have energy.

I am going to go cold turkey with sugar. I am addicted to sugar. I never use xylitol but first time i order online. I am going to hide it from me. lol I will update you tomorrow evening my latest food. Thank you again.

NEVERGIVEUP I would also try to eat more substantial meals and only use protein shakes for emergencies. If you are concerned about fueling/refuleling for workouts, I recommend Paleo Diet for Athletes. I don't think dairy is necessarily evil, as long as you are SURE you tolerate it well. Have you ever NOT had it for a while? This whole way of life is all about eating things your body tolerates well so it can function at its best. Xylitol is up for debate. I am sure the subject has been covered by Mark's Daily Apple. I try to use Stevia or coconut crystals or raw honey, but the best practice is to wean yourself from the taste of sweet. If you are an addict, go cold turkey, suffer through a few days of withdrawl and you will be fine after about day 3 or 4. I have done this repeatedly going off and on Atkins. For example I went from syrupy coffee creamer and carmel macciatos to plain half and half to plain coconut creamer. Now I don't even like that stuff!

Glad everyone is doing pretty well! Somehow I dropped the ball on this thread! I guess I have been distracted lately with lots and lots to do! I have been on track, except maybe having too much wine, and survived a party with all my favorite junk with only having had some Spinach salad that I made and some pulled pork! emoticon

MISSJCISRUNNING, Thank you so much for all the information. I eat egg white only because yolk upset my stomach. Sure i will add some more food in my lunch time. I eat my fruits in my breakfast time. I will keep on protein drink only after my workouts.

Welcome and congratulations for making this life changing decision,

From looking at you post, I would skip the egg whites and go for the whole egg and more veggies. This will not only feed your brain the healthy fat it needs but will probaly eliminate the need for a mid Moran g snack.

Again, more fat and protein at lunch to avoid the need for an afternoon snack. Lunch should be your biggest meal of the day and should hold you for 4-5 hours.

Also, looking to get your calories from solid food instead of protein drinks will defiantly help with weight loss.

I try it model my diet after the way my grandparents ate...solid breakfast, hearty lunch, moderate dinner and maybe fruit for dessert. When you eat enough protein and fat you don't need to eat 5-6 times a day like you do when you are carb dependent!

I'm sure others will chime in but remember most of all...go easy and make lasting changes!

Doing good the last few days! No headaches or sugar cravings!

I did notice yesterday that I was not hungry even after 6 hours! I was in an all day conference and didn't pack anything for dinner! I had a good breakfast and lunch and was totally surprised that I wasn't starving by 5 or even 6pm! The meetings was over at 7 and I was fine until I got home and warmed up some chicken I has cooked earlier! Before Paleo I would have been chewing my arm off or at the very least stopping on my way home! Im hoping this means I'm making the transition to becoming more efficient at burning fat for fuel!

Hey Manda ~ the best and worst part of this is that you kind of get to plot your own course. I'm doing a lot of reading at the moment, check out the book review topic for some ideas. Also, the website: Mark's Daily Apple has a getting started section that might be useful - but he is primal - I'm too much of a beginner to be able to spot the difference between paleo and primal yet!! There are other websites out there as well which might suit you better...
Good to know also is that there seem to be a few variations of paleo/primal - some seem more flexible re dairy than others.
Finally, re the caffeine - I had a caffeine headache for the past three days and finally had a cup of tea ~ with only one tea bag today with my lunch. I'm going to have one again tomorrow, when I get to work ~ I can't function with the headache. (It is building up again now.) Over the weekend I'll give it up completely. (I was having four - five cups a day, with 2 tea bags). So tapering it off gently is my way of dealing with it!
Cheers - and good luck!
Row.

Hi everyone! I am starting the paleo lifestyle tomorrow. I am hitting the grocery store tonight with the hubby. I am a carboholic and my body really doesn't handle it well. I feel that this will help to reset my body and get me out of this plateau of 155 lbs.

I am not cutting dairy completely as I always have a glass of organic ff milk for bfast. I am cutting out all cheese and other dairies. Do you all have any suggestions or advice for me? I know the first week will be tough as I will need to overcome my caffeine addiction and carbohydrate addiction. What do you do to overcome that?

Hi there,
I've been away a few days - I've been 'camping' at Mark's Daily apple website - anyone having trouble with motivation - have a look at the success stories! And then share them with those who you would like to join you - my partner after looking at a few of the blokes, and reading their stories has come on board. And 2 of my 3 daughters are also giving it a go. Man that's a lot of breakfast - we are giving the BBQ a good workout!

Anyway, I'm on day 4 of the leptin reset now, and doing ok. I think I have eaten too much fruit, but I could not bear to waste a magnificent papaya. But now I'll just buy 'sensible' veg, and should be ok.
Oh - a good result to report - my skin, which has always been on the dry, rough, and flaky side is now as smooth as a babies proverbial. I went and checked against my sister's baby. She (the baby) is a bit squishier than me, but my skin is just as soft! [It's ok, I just tested gently against her arm - no babies were harmed, or treated inappropriately in this experiment!]

Cheers all!

Rowena.

Good Morning Everyone!

It's been a crazy week with way too much stress related chocolate and not enough accountability! I'm stocked with fruit, veggies, meat and some nuts to last me through the weekend! I've decided to be chocolate/sugar free until I return from the PaleoFX conference on March 17th....that's 23 days, which should be enough time to do a good detox!

I'm expecting the next few days to be rough...it's amazing to see how quickly sugar dependency can return! Anyway, I'm back!!!
