I will definitely check it out, thanks....I don't eat fruit, other than occasional berries, but I could play with my protein numbers, I'm sure.

Currently I'm experimenting with cinnamon, we'll see how that goes!

Couple of weeks into the Whole 30. I started reading the Perfect Health Diet, which encourages extra starch and less fruit and protein. I implemented that idea within the Whole 30 and that's when I started getting better glucose numbers.

Had a great weekend here...saw a couple of movies (Sucker Punch - very fun, just don't think too hard about it....and Limitless - really, really good!)....made good food choices (thanks, salad bar!) and did some hiking to practice climbing hills for the fuji trip!

I was very happy that I was able to climb a hill that had previously kicked my booty - this time I did it with no rests, no heart pounding in my ears, no whining and no collapsing at the top! DH was impressed that I even kept up with his pace!

I guess carrying that extra almost-40 pounds really was a handicap!

I finally saw greek yogurt in the store here (we're kind of deprived in Guam)!

That used to be my favorite thing to get from Trader Joes....

I'll definitely be getting some after the 30th!

I bought some greek yogurt yesterday. It was a blow it, but I love the stuff! I like the plain, no fruit kind.Other than the occasional dairy I've been pretty good. I have a ton of veggies in my fridge, but no motivation to eat them. Need to work on that!

this has been a very experimental week for me - sauteed some red chard with coconut milk and spices - it was super yum!

I had no idea I liked all these greens! Its good to step outside the usual spinach once in a while!

ended up making kale chips for the first time last night - they were so delicious and crunchy! I've been wanting to make them forever, but it's hard to find kale here - maybe I'll try some other greens, like spinach! They would probably work the same way.....

Today I will have the usual boiled eggs for breakfast, zucchini noodles with meatsauce for lunch and steaks with red chard for dinner!

Had a nice walk to work this morning and 2 boiled eggs for breakfast.....actually lost weight over the weekend - that never happens! This challenge is so great for keeping me out of trouble!

Can't help with the beets...they make me gag! I just chop up kale, chard and other assorted greens with my salad. Makes it interesting. Sometimes I stir fry them in a little coconut oil, drop in a few eggs and have a scramble. BTW...had some coffee today. I went 3 weeks without and saw no difference in my sleep issues. I must say I enjoyed it!

You can look for crossfit workouts online. I have my home gym set up to do crossfit workouts. Not as motivating as being at the box, but cheap. I change up every day, and do whatever inspires me. Some days inspiration is digging in the yard, or chopping wood with an ax (massively good workout!).

yay, Beck! I was already primal when I started too, and I really thought dropping the dairy, sweetneners and weekly glass of red wine would be harder than it has been!

But I can really tell it's worth it!

down 5 pounds and 1 whole pants size in 2 weeks of the challenge! dirty diaper butt - yippee!!

I've really been checking out the crossfit info lately - I would so love to have a crossfit gym here! I'll still do the aerobics classes as "play" but I need to be more primal with my exercise - hoping I can come up with a routine to do on my own...

I'm still hanging in there. The first week I saw no difference. Of course I was already Primal, so there weren't a lot of changes, just no dairy. This week I am seeing my weight drop, but I'm mindful of my calories more. I think that is the difference for me. I'm usually very active, but the last few months I've slowed way down. I was still eating like I was doing mass exercise. I'll pick up the pace come spring. I tend to hibernate in winter!

I know what my celebration meal will contain on March 31!!!

Poked around in the freezer at my health food store and found Coconut Bliss ice cream! all paleo ingredients, though it does contain agave syrup so not safe for Whole 30

That was def my habit in WW too - in fact, I usually hit Captain D's for cheese stix on the way home from the meeting! LOL

Since going Primal, I don't do "cheats" at all anymore - I mean, once I decided that grains and sugar are poison - I figure a cheat would have to be something pretty darn special, and I haven't come across anything that special yet! My biggest splurge was a little dark chocolate!

Since Whole 30 is even more strict, after only 2 weeks, I'm definitely noticing how the sodium, chocolate and dairy were still affecting me.

I do work out - fun kickboxing and circuit training at my gym, mostly - scuba and hiking on the weekends.....

I hope you'll have great success with your Whole30 - it's a fantastic experiment! I've already learned SO much!

Amen to that Rhonda! Know exactly what you mean. I got in a bad habit with WW when our lecturer said "If you are going to go off program do it right after you weigh in." Like you, every weekend I stop paying attention at least for Saturday.

Guess it's just finding the rhythm that works for you. They say if you feel deprived, you're more likely to go way off, but the challenge is to give yourself permission for an occasional something and stop at that. Certain foods are SO addictive though, it's hard to just have 1 little something sometimes.

Do you work out during the week?

Will post a new thread and the end of this month gearing up for April. Thanks for the tip!

Blue - you should def start a new thread for an April Challenge! There were a lot of people that weren't quite ready in March, I'm sure they would join you!!! I haven't decided if I'll continue for a second round or not...

Small victory here - Whole 30 is helping me avoid "weekend gain"! My official weigh in (due to our office contest) is on Fridays - and usually I'm up 2-5 pounds on Monday, then lose it again by Friday. Even though I don't do "cheat" meals on weekends and I was making on plan selections - we did eat out more and I'm sure all that sodium and such contributed to the gains.....

I'm excited about moving in ONE direction instead of always having to make up ground!

Headed out today to stock up and then I'll be prepping everything this afternoon for meals and snacks for the week. I never want to do it, probably because it signals the official end of the weekend BOOOOOOOOOOOO, but I try to make myself spend the hour or so - since it makes the week ever so much easier!

Doing great so far. I put a little butter on my asparagus the other day. Forgot that was dairy. I don't do butter often. I cook in coconut oil mostly. I could live on coconut. I could probably live on a 100% nut diet, but they put the pounds on me. Sunny weather has upped my energy levels, so I'm off to enjoy it!

haha, Jennie - nuts can be pretty addictive sometimes, I have to keep a tight rein on them myself.

Weekend went well for me - after the birthday breakfast I ended up just eating strawberries with coconut milk for lunch and broiled chicken legs for dinner.

I discovered that pouring a little of the chicken "juice" over steamed broccoli made it taste almost buttery! That was pretty awesome, because I've been missing the butter!

Ok, I'm 6 days late, but I'm going to give it a try. I was just thinking about this this morning. I have cut down on dairy quite a bit. I do #1,3,4, without a doubt, but ocassionally I have super dark chocolate- 99%. It's only 1g of sugar for a serving. I do drink red wine almost nightly, and I sometimes have a protein shake.

Tomorrow is a new day and I will take this challenge one day at a time. I know the most difficult is DAIRY! I will not cook with butter just coconut oil and bacon grease. I'll have to let my hubby know.
I don't have an issue with arthritis so I'm not going to cut out # 8, I'm addicted to spicy food!!

Turns out that our first restaurant challenge was pretty easy - went out for breakfast (DH birthday) with some friends and had no trouble passing the pancakes and toast off to their kids while we enjoyed eggs, meat and fruit!

Day 5 and still on track. I've been doing a lot of chicken-vegetable soup. Boil up a whole chicken, put the meat in with the stock, then throw the carcass into the crockpot for a day or 2 and make bone broth. It's supposed to be extremely nutrient dense and great for your skin and joints. Sort of the old fashioned "use the whole animal" thing. You can use any bones from any animal. It's become part of my challenge, just to see if it makes any difference.

@DMC You are certainly welcome to join us - but please do scroll down to the bottom to make sure you're ok with all the restrictions of Whole 30! I also put the link to the website there for you to read up.....dairy, for instance, is not allowed for this month.....this is a super strict version of Paleo....just to help get us to a good place so when we do add back some dark chocolate or a little cheese, we can notice the effects more easily! *If it's a little too strict, there is another challenge thread (sticky) that is JUST 30 days Paleo, instead of Whole 30....

Pretty happy with how the challenge is going for me! I thought I would miss things like cheese more than I do - but I'm replacing the "easy" stuff with more creative veggies and such. For ex, I cut parsnips up into steak fry shapes and roasted them in the oven last night - it was so delicious! I can't believe I've never tried a parsnip before!

I would like to join the challenge. I didnt start Paleo until March 3, so Ill end a few days after you all. So far I am loving it. Prior to this I was doing WW and just never feeling satisfied. Now I am feeling satisfied. I have some health issues I am hoping this diet will help me to resolve as well.

This morning I had an omelette with bacon, broccoli, tomatoes, and cheddar cheese. Love it!

@Luv - macadamia nuts and/or coconut flakes make great snacks! I keep some in my desk drawer and it only takes a small handful to really fill me up! lots of good healthy fat...

Day 3 is starting out great - had a leftover fishcake and an avocado for breakfast....looking forward to steak salad for lunch and salmon for dinner....

I realized yesterday that I have to give up sugarless gum to make this really 100% (even though I don't actually ingest it, it's full of artificial sweeteners) - eeeeeeeeeek! So I brought a toothbrush to work - I may have the sparkliest teeth in the universe after this month!

It's 11 and I'm doing good!!!!

I like the zone diet method. I thinknit translates to 30, 30, 40? With carbs being 40%. I don't know for sure, it's just easy. :) I eat a paleo diet and try to get my % to match blocks. Zone isn't paleo, but zone can be done with paleo. Zone is all about balance, paleo is all about content.

Hello Team, I am very new to this diet. I need all the help. Is there any guideline how much to eat. ie: fat, carbs, protein.

I'm in on this one. I've been grain free 5 months. I just can't seem to get the formula right! When I was totally Paleo, I had trouble with fruit and nuts. I just couldn't limit them well. Then I went more Low-Carb, cut the fruit and nuts, and had trouble with too much dairy interfering with progress. I gave up coffee 2 weeks ago. That was hell! Now I'm detoxed, and determined to do this right this time! So I'm in on the Whole 30 in March. No grains, legumes OR DAIRY!

I am ready for tomorrow. I go to health food store and got me almond butter, coconut milk, almond milk, apple sauce, coconut oil and veggie protein for my breakfast smoothie. I already buy all my fresh veggies and fruits from meijer. I am not going to eat any meat at first week than i am going to add in one of my meal to see how my stomach handle any meat, I only eat chicken, fish and goat meat. Good luck to everyone! Lets do it together.

Sorry you're not feeling well, Luscious!

It's March 1 in Guam- so it's go time for me!

Breakfast is leftover ribeye and coconut cauliflower "rice"....pretty different than the usual protein shake, but I think I'll be ok! ; )

So will this be "fat monday" for all of you on the other side of the dateline? One last dairy blowout before we go into the challenge? hahaha

I am not comfortable with that many changes at once yet emoticon BUT! I am open to trying it in April as some of the others suggested! Dairy would be the biggest for me I think. I am a butter and cheese alcoholic!

The challenge starts tomorrow and I am down with swollen glands, sore throat and cough. Seems to be going around the city right now and lasts about 2 weeks per those who have had it.
I will wait for another challenge when I am feeling better.
Wishing you all lots of success!

Congratulations, Ree! How do you feel about completing the challenge??

I'm not planning to give up tomatoes either - since I don't have arthritis or gout, nightshades aren't an issue for me, I just don't eat potatoes right now due to the carbs.....

I finish my whole 30 on march 1st! Wish I had been informed about the nightshade thing, but really I LIVE on tomatoes! I had to get through my 30th birthday, valentines day and my wedding anniversary without sugar or alcohol, so it CAN be done!

If you have any questions about recipes, give me a hollar. I found a pretty decent sweet potato pancake recipe and almond butter is way more awesome than peanut butter!

Would love to join you but I got a date with some wine and cheese!

This list totally terrified me! No legumes NO Sugar any kind. I use honey some time. But i try to give up for month to see how i feel.

Maybe that is my problem, not giving these up all the way. I really need help with my diet and healthier eating right now.

OK, I'm in for March...but I'm still scared!

Oh i forgot to ask, can any one let me know if i am about to use raisins and prunes?

great, Candace! giving up cheese for 30 days will be a challenge for me too!!

nightshades include white potatoes, eggplants, tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, pimentos, paprika and tabasco.....there may be more, those are just the ones I know. unless you have gout or arthritis, though, most folks don't have much reaction to them.....not counting the insulin reaction to white potatoes, of course.....

Yea, I'm in! What are the night shade veggies? I guess I could look it up. I just checked out a ton of books on the Paleo Diet. I'm pretty much doing it now except for the cheese part. I love cheese!

yay - glad to have company!

I believe white potatoes are in the nightshade family....I don't eat them due to the carbs, but I won't really be worrying about the other nightshades like tomatoes or eggplant!
whole 30 is paleo - but no cheats are supposed to be allowed during the 30 days....I'm excited about the possiblity I could feel even better than I have by going Primal in the first place!! can't wait to find out...

I don't need to eliminate nightshades, so not doing #8.

emoticon Hi RKJ - glad you are starting this thread. I am willing to join you for March and will include 1,2,3,4,6 &7. However, I since I am following the Paleo Diet which allows 3 'cheat meals' a week I am going to go with that allowance. Otherwise, I am in.

I will be cheering you on.

Anyone wanna join me?? It won't be that far of a stretch for most of us low carbers, and certainly not for those of us that are already Primal.....

Here's the plan: whole9life.com/2009/07/the-w30/

1.Eat real food – meat*, eggs, vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruit, oils (like EVOO or coconut). Eat foods with very few ingredients, all pronounceable ingredients, or better yet, no ingredients listed at all because they’re fresh and natural.
2.Do not eat dairy. This includes butter, cheese (hard and soft), yogurt (even Greek) and milk (including cream in your coffee**).
3.Do not eat grains. This includes bread, rice, pasta, corn (I count corn as a grain), oatmeal, and all of those gluten-free pseudo-grains. That’s not real food, right?
4.Do not eat legumes. This includes beans of all kinds, lentils, and peanuts. (No peanut butter, kids.)
5.Do not eat sugars*** of any kind, real or artificial. No maple syrup, honey, agave nectar, Splenda, Truvia, Stevia, etc.
6.Do not eat processed foods. This includes protein shakes, processed bars (like Zone bars), dairy-free creamers, etc.
7.Do not drink alcohol, in any form.
8.If you have serious inflammation issues like arthritis, you may want to consider avoiding nightshades for 30 days as well.

I'm going to be sad to give up dark chocolate, cheese and red wine - but I'm willing to do it for a month to see if it makes me feel any differently!!
