Well today, the scale finally budged. It even went down. I think it must be because I stopped holding my breath or something. (c:

Hi Pammietaj - you are so right. I have been trying for years to get on top of my weight gain. With sparks I have been up and down but never above my starting weight which is a blessing. However, with this round, my goal is to get to the bottom of the stumbling blocks and correct them. Your idea of a mantra is so helpful. I have put together some other ones to tell myself. I know it won't be easy ... just easier! I'll let you know how it goes.

Yesterday, I was able to get through 3 social occasions successfully! So that is encouraging. At least I am off to a good start. Now for the challenges of today.

I am also cheering for you. You have done so well - press on and have a great day.

You're welcome. I don't think it's enough to retrain our bodies to burn fat as fuel. We need to retrain our brains as well. I find it an ongoing process.

Typically, on Tuesday evenings I meet some friends to knit. I'm feeling wimpy today and like I just can't face temptation and only order some tea or decaf coffee. I'm going for diversion and staying home to do something else. It isn't always easy, but at least I think about my challenges.

emoticon Hi Pammietaj - thank you for your very helpful post. I am beginning to implement your suggestion immediately as I can see this will be 'a baby step' in changing my thinking. So, I am making this mantra my focus for the rest of the month along with eating the Paleo way. Once again, thank you for your insight and strategy.

I have a mantra when I'm out in the world Yvonne! I look at something and if it isn't paleo, I tell myself it isn't food. It's the truth, too. If I can't tell what it is composed of you know it probably isn't food. So repeat the mantra and only eat real food.

I'll never say it's easy. It isn't easy to go against the grain of what everyone around us is doing. It is important, though. Never diminish what you are doing for yourself and your health by following this lifestyle.

emoticon Hi Pammietay - you are an inspiration! Making our way of eating work in the real world is a real accomplishment. I aspire to be more like you!

I am struggling. At home - no problem. Out or in company - not so good. Feeling a bit frustrated but starting to recognize that my thinking is the real problem. Need to take some time to write out my weaknesses and challenges in thinking that lead to poor choices. Then concentrate on developing ways to change my thinking - starting with setting small action steps and rewarding any success. I can see this may take awhile!

I was out of town as well. I haven't weighed yet, though. Although I can't control for things that aren't visibly non-paleo, I did manage the things that are obvious. (c: I think I managed them pretty well. Almost everyone has a salad with a grilled chicken breast on it!

emoticon Hi everyone. Just got back from out of town and did my weigh in. I am up a pound. Really disappointing!! However, today is a new day and a new beginning. Loved the tip of cleaning out the cupboards ... wish I could do the same with my friend's!

I can't blame my friends for my eating issues - I need to develop strategies to overcome these blips. For me, it is the outside world that presents the most challenge. So I will be going over my tracking record and seeing what I can do to improve.

I am so glad I have this thread to track my progress. I do want to succeed and appreciate the posts of everyone as they motivate me to keep going.

Im with you Jenn. I had two cheat meals this week... spaghetti and a drive by at McDonalds. Pretty bummed that I cheated, but Im proud of the fact I had a small portion of spaghetti and at McDonalds I had a cheeseburger, small fry & a coke zero- compared to the 2 cheeseburgers, large fry and large coke I usually get. Yes it wasnt Paleo.... but compared to how I used to eat- Im doing ok. =) Day one starts today... and so far so good!

Jenn, toss the rest of the bag of cookies and get back on the paleo bus. I'm of a mind to plan my cheats and enjoy them. I think torturing ourselves about on and off the wagon is unproductive.

Eat some nitrate/nitrite free bacon and be happy.

I have fallen off the wago this week. I ate chips and pizza yesterday. Super long work day followed by 2 basketball games and an 8:30pm dinner. Excuses, Excuses..LOL

Tonight, I am having cookies. Ate one on the way home from Market Basket already. However, I do know that I am going to be having a massive calorie burn with snow shoeing.

Tomorrow is another day :)

emoticon Hi Everyone.

Pammietaj - emoticon emoticon emoticon 1.5 pounds gone. Sounds as if you have discovered and corrected the slow down in your weight loss. I'm doing a little happy dance for you.

Jaegersmom: Love the goals you set for yourself ... absolutely doable. Down 5 pounds!! Wonderful. emoticon emoticon emoticon I'm doing a happy dance for you, also!

As for me - I still struggle with eating at a friend's home. (Twice this week already! and one scheduled for the weekend). I find this especially difficult when they go to so much work to make a gluten-free meal and then I find out my hostess made a casserole (of course made with gluten free pasta and a gluten free dessert). Don't think I will be losing anything this week! :(

What I am going to try next is when I am invited to someone's home to let them know my dietary needs ahead of time. (Just as I did when I was diagnosed that I had to follow a gluten-free diet for my health.) Then offer to bring along something to help out with the dinner. I'll let you know how I make out!

Today's a new day and I am re-committing to my goals.

I'm down 1.8 pounds for the last week. Phew. I was beginning to think I was broken or something. I had been eating legumes, and I think that had slowed or stopped my weight loss.

I'm not drinking enough water. I lean more toward hot drinks in the cold, cold, cold. For me that means coffee (leaded and unleaded) and herbal teas. The herbal teas aren't so bad, but I suspect the coffee is suspect.

I think everyone can check in as often as they like Yvonne. I know some folks have a hard time keeping up with where they need to post and when. (c: I'm still with it. I am really most amazed that I don't get cravings. What is up with that?

I should add exercise to my list of good and soon, It isn't there yet. I do take a Ma Tai Chi class twice a week at school, though. (c:

emoticon Hi Everyone. Starting this challenge officially today. Glad everyone is doing so well to start off the challenge. Yesterday, I was finishing another challenge and am feeling very encouraged.

This month my goals are:
1. To follow the Paleo lifestyle way of eating
2. To exercise 5 days each week (20 - 45 min a session)
3. To support this thread
4. To start incorporating soup into my lunch menu when the Paleo cookbooks arrive.
5. To lose 1/2 - 1 pound a week.

Skinnypowell1 - Great to meet you and do this challenge with you. Whatever you are doing is working! What modifications are you making to the Paleo diet?

Pannetaj - emoticon You are off to a running start! Giving up diet coke is a major accomplishment and so is giving up legumes if they have been part of your regular diet. In effect you are learning a new way to eat. I am right beside you - cheering for you - for the biggest challenge is making this way of eating work in the real world. Thanks for starting this thread and leading us all onto victory. Do you recommend checking in daily, weekly, or at the end of the challenge?

Jenn0327 - Wow!! I see you've reached your goal weight!!

emoticon emoticon emoticon So now the even bigger challenge begins to maintain your goal weight. I will be rooting for you and learning from you through your posts.

Jaegersmom - So glad to be part of this weight loss journey with you. Looking forward to your posts.

We can do this - and together encourage each other to never, never, never give up.

Hey the challenge is yours, the timing is mine. (c: My personal challenges are going to be removing legumes from my diet, ending a once a week cheat day, and getting rid of that one diet coke a day. I swear that stuff might be more addictive than cigarettes or heroin.

Strangely enough, I love the month of February. It's all of four weeks long (most of the time). The days are entirely too short for me, and the weather is too cold, but Spring is right around the corner. Where Spring can be seen on its way, Summer is right behind it. (c:

I've been following a modification of paleo that isn't doing much for me (it's doing a lot for my husband though, so I'm thinking, it's just being female, a recovering vegetarian, and perimenopausal that is the problem). Full on paleo is a little bit of a challenge for me. I've been reading Robb Wolf's book and I've decided to give it a go.

Starting Sunday (superbowl? grill, baby, grill), I'm doing that full on paleo challenge. The end of thirty days is the last day of February, which makes it all about as tidy as it can be. Anyone care to join me?
