Thanks, girls. Our family celebrations were over the weekend so today and tomorrow are pretty open. We still have ice on the roads and I did not want to chance falling so close to the Big SHow. Today's 12 miles really went by fast. I walked about 2/3 of it and wogged the rest. Stay tuned!

Phase one of my final Goofy training B2B long runs Christmas-style is finished. That would be 12 miles on the treadmill and it wasn't bad at all and took about 3:15:00. Next up ~ Christmas eve church service. Phase Two is tomorrow with 22 miles on aforementioned treadmill. Merry Christmas, y'all!!!!

I've had a bit of an introverted year, too -- running so much seems to have that effect on me (since I don't have any local running partners). But coming to Spark every day has kept me from fading into the wood work!

Thank you, Catherine. I've just needed the down time AGAIN and have felt like an introvert. Heck, I haven't been on Facebook either and come to Spark to track my food and fitness and get some points. Just feel withdrawn.

I'm not sure if it matters a lot, really, since it is just the last of a set of workouts done outside (I assume). But here's what I'd do.

1. Run by time (based on your estimate of how long it would take you were you doing it outside).

2. Vary both the pace and incline as you run. This makes the treadmill a tad less boring and also (sort of) simulates what happens when you run outside.

3. On average, try to stick with your normal pacing.

Hope you have a great race. I've missed your support.

I am putting this question out there for anyone to answer and THANK YOU in advance.

I have my final Goofy B2B long runs coming up this weekend-ish. For several reasons I am opting to do these on the treadmill. Not ideal but it is my decision. The first day is 12 miles with second being 22 miles.

1) since the calibration of my treadmill is unknown, do I run for the amount of time I usually run that distance outside in leu of actual miles?

2) do I use the same pacing as I would outside?

3) the age old controversial question of using a grade to mimic outside conditions. Yes or no?

I plan on using the same 2:1 and/or 1:1 (I change it up at times) for the second run and more walking with the first.

I completed the 7 miles this morning and ran only 10% of the distance. It was breezy and very chilly on the bike path. Heading to my hometown to run 17 miles tomorrow with Emily at about a 14 m/m pace. Felt so good to get out this morning.

On Saturday i will most likely do a combo of mostly walking and a little dab of wogging. Sunday will be normal. This is actually our first Sat/Sun b2b Goofy weekend training. Should be interesting.

I agree that the podcast discussed walking on Saturday and then run/walking on Sunday when training for the goofy. Laurie, so you usually do faster walks? As somone who use to train for walking halfs and stopped, I'll mention that as you push your walk pace you put different stresses on your muscles and tendons and all. I would not try walking much faster than you feel is natural if this is your first longer walk.

I can't do the Illinois marathon because it is the same weekend as Big Sur. This travelling to marathons during the local marathon hot time is a bit of a bother.

Thinking of doing Go St. Louis Full. It's April 7 a nice 3 weeks before Big Sur.

Hoping to do Donna mid Feb and will consider Little Rock beginning of March.. I can't justify the expense and time to travel to run that one alone again.

Catherine, yep I am still considering what I am doing Saturday. From my understanding Jeff wants your legs to be feeling somewhat used going into Sunday's longer run therefore mimicking Goofy. I am going to shoot for a faster walk for 7 miles on Saturday and then 14 m/m for Sunday's 17 miles which I will be running with Emily. Fortunately I am understanding Jeff's theories behind his workouts.

Have a great weekend. For some reason, I thought Jeff recommended walking the Saturday workout and running the Sunday one (I heard him talking about it on a Podcast.) Are you still using 1/1?

So far, my dance card for next year has "Donna" in February, Big Sur in April, Newport, OR in June. Jeff's Vail retreat in July. I probably will add Wineglass (NY) in September. Still need one for the end of the year.

But no Goofy for me.

Here's the dealeo. According to Jeff's Goofy plan we are to run 7 miles on Saturday and 17 miles on Sunday. My plan is to run 7 miles at my favorite bike path on Saturday and head to hometown on Sunday morning to run 17 miles with DIL Emily and I am truly looking forward to it. I will be digging out my full length tights for this weekend.

I am also registering for my full marathons for 2013 with the first one being IMT Des Moines (Iowa) in the latter part of October 2013. I will most likely be running the Illinois Marathon (Champaign, IL) in the latter part of April 2013. I am embracing the marathon distance that at one time seemed seriously scary. Now that I have finished two, I am ready.

Cindy, RIGHT!!!!!!!

Please help me get Emily to the finish and pray for NOT warmer temps. With her MS, she is always nervous with overheating. Our slow pace helps us with that HOWEVER it extends our time in the sun.

I think I am more nervous about her than I am myself.

I must share that I had a great 7 mile long run Monday morning and a wonderful 4 mile easy run after work today. I felt so light on my feet and awesome. I feel like my head is in the right place right now given the task at hand in 10 days. Now I am trying to keep Emily from freaking out and second guessing herself. We are quite the pair LOL.

In general I don't try anything new two weeks before a race. I let up on the leg stuff about a week before and don't row, which is legs from about the Wednesday before a race. So as long as you are just continuing your normal workout schedule you'll be okay. Of course I threw all those rules out the window for San Francisco, so this is definitely I do as I say not as I do sort of thing.

Laurie, I think it looks fine. Two suggestions -- foam roll as much as you can. After 8 hours in the car the day before the marathon, get on the treadmill for at least one very easy mile. 2 would be even better and also make sure to stretch your back and hips after all that sitting.

Complicated runs...that is how Emily and I roll LOL. It helps break up the monotony. We always find something to entertain us even if it is just the two of us.

Sounds extremely well thought out! (That lower leg ST can sneak up on you in a very long run. I made that mistake -- once -- too!)

Gearing up for our final loooooong long run EARLY Saturday morning with 22 miles according to the Catherine/Cindy Much Improved Training Plan. This time I WILL have a fantastic run with no bonking. I just know it!

This week I am eating like a champ and meeting my macros with a little higher calorie range (but not stupid). I am also paring down on my leg ST and what I did was today. Tomorrow I visit my chiro for yet another awesomely awesome ART session to get me in tiptop shape.

Saturday morning I will NOT eat a breakfast loaded with fiber (duh) and I WILL give my feet and other areas a good dousing of Body Glide. I may not sleep well Friday night but that will not detract from the task at hand. I will also take some pretzels with me to try before the marathon. Otherwise, I have my marathon fueling set but will perfect after the 22 miler. Oh, and this time I WILL take my trusty handheld water bottle.

That is my plan and I am sticking to it!!!!!

I don't really carbo load before a run either. I certainly don't carbo load the night before. For me that would probably lead to heart burn and discomfort during the race.

I've been meaning to ask you if you had a run/walk ratio and pace in mind for the race? I'd like to do a few runs at your ratio before hand to get the feel of it.

Ok, got it. I wondered because I was thinking that you don't ever mention carb loading yourself. Interesting. Again, do what works for you and THAT is what this training period is for.

I just can't believe we have just one more LONG long run to go! Even with this wonky run which really wasn't that bad we both feel we will be ready. Nervous, but ready. Emily had such a fantastic 22 miles and she needed it badly.

Hi Laurie, I did miss that post.

To be honest, I don't worry about carb loading before a race. From what I've read, if you consume calories during the run, carb loading doesn't add anything extra. Especially if you are diligent in consuming a recovery meal after every workout to replace glycogen stores quickly. I'm a naturally flexitarian style eater. So I'm always eating a bit heavy on the fruits and veggies. But you can't store beyond a certain limit, no matter how many carbs you consume.

What I do focus on, however, is hydration. I don't want to go into a race dehydrated or with electrolyte imbalances.

Catherine and friends, what is your take on this?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Carbo loading method 1: Long Taper
Using the long taper method, you should have your final hard training session 3 weeks before competition day. By 2 weeks out, you should really start tapering your training.
During this taper time you do not need to eat extra calories since your body will not be using as many as it needed during training. Instead, you should continue to eat 3-5 grams of carbohydrate per pound of body weight and reduce your fat intake to make up for your body’s reduced demand for energy.
Your muscles will use these extra carbohydrate calories to build up a glycogen store that will remain, since you won’t be using it for training any longer. Normally your body can store glycogen at the capacity of 80-120 mmol/kg.
10 is fine -- just treat it as a long run as far as pace goes.
If it is warm it will be closer to 14.
If we do 20 miles next week do you think 10 is good for endurance maintenance since last week was 6? I know you mentioned 9.
Laurie, normally I'd say no problem with 13 /mi when you've been training at 14 /mi as long as you are fully recovered before the race. We'll just see how it goes.
And I am going to assume it will be a WARM raceday given this summer already. That alone will dictate a slower pace.
