For me it's about actually practicing! (same as losing weight - you actually have to exercise, not just own videos)....

I'll be curious what works for you

wow, what a great goal! And one that I really, really want to master myself. As someone else stated, shimmies are my nemesis. My body just won't go there yet and it's making me crazy! I've taken down the names of some of the DVD'd you ladies suggested and I'm going to really make an effort to try and get this up to speed. I have a feeling that it's really about focusing and carving out the practice time, dedicated only to that and that once I have it, it will be like riding a bike. For some reason, I think I may be overthinking it and it's holding me back from actually getting it into my body.

I'm really trying to work on my shimmy. One of the things I've noticed from the DVDs is that they don;t do straight shimmy but rather mix it up a little IE normal shimmy, then choo-choo, then chest shimmy, then walking , back to normal with other variations. I like writing the alphabet with my shimmy....

I know this thread started in April, but I just found it today. I have a real struggle keeping a shimmy going! Have a weak leg from hip replacement & arthritis in both knees, so I have a hard time keeping it going. I can do the straight leg a lot easier than bent knee, so I do what is easiest! Love the idea of working up to 20 mns. What a challenge for me, I can't even keep it going for a whole min. I assume, I have never timed myself! Thanks for the tips on DVD's for this particular exercise, will give this a try! I'll add it to my home work-outs Mon-Thurs!
This will be the challenge that will really push me.

I'm in also!

I am not even sure how long I can shimmy, I've never timed it. But I am looking to work more consistently with drills to build my muscle endurance back up so this is a great place for me to start!

Also, Celeste has a DVD with some great shimmy drills (4 10 minute drills). I have trouble with the straighter leg shimmy so I could use the challenge!

I tried yesterday along with my new Rachel Brice DVD. As long as all I did was shimmy, I was okay, but as soon as I started adding the complex (for me) layering, I'd lose my hips!

Yeah for the 20 minute shimmy!!!

I'm still working on it.. and closing in on my target.. I've got about a 15min shimmy at this point.. shaking through two songs.. the third song.. I think it's waiting for me.. hands on hips, with a look on it's face that says.. "What are you waiting for? Just do it!"

I think I gotta dance!

Since I have only been dancing for a few weeks (took time off for surgery), I decided to test myself today with the Suhaila song "Stamina" which is a hair over 21 minutes long. No problem, I got through it. :-)

I taught a shimmy class in February and found out that I could. Actual time was ~35 mins with perhaps 5 mins of non-shimmy/instruction/correction time before I gave the class a break. I try to shimmy 10 min/day, but I just started all of this...

Woo hoo on the 10 minutes Davina. I tentatively bellydanced a little yesterday and look forward to being able to get back up to speed. I think I will try to get back to class a week from tomorrow and see if I can tolerate the drama. :-)

I am pleased to announce.. I've made it to 10 minutes. I also did a pretty descent performance on Friday. If you are interested in checking it out - I've flopped it onto my website. It's a large MP4 format file - so it may take a moment to upload. It was good to get there in front of an audience again..

WOW!! 20 minute shimmies? *bows* That's awesome!!

I can manage about 5 minutes. I'm working on extending that and doing a 60 second spin. It's slow going, but I will get back there soon. :)

I think most people have something that they are good at...the people who are lucky find that thing early on and it helps them stick with bellydance. :-)

Oooh.. Shimmy Girls are fantastic..

Me - I'm a natural undulater.. with a sinuous and supple spine and stomach and really strong arms... Shimmies are my nemesis, the thing in dance that if I don't work on.. I simply won't get. After my hiatus.. I almost completely lost the shimmy.. It's coming back.. with work!

Yesterday, I danced through all of Faddah by Hossam Ramzy's Faddah off the album Faddah. It's got a lot of mood changes and great places to accent... 8 min long.. I'm working with it all week... and then.. I'll find a nice 10 min piece..

And on it goes...

I am lucky, I am a natural shimmy-girl. I was the go to girl for demonstrating a vibration shimmy because I could do it at will...without working up to it. I have been able to shimmy for 20 minutes since 2006. LOL Of course, I can do the elliptical for 90 minutes, so I started off with excellent endurance.

I do swap the kind of shimmy around as I am doing shimmy drills. Generally I swap between an Egyptian Shimmy (Jillina style), a Lebanese Shimmy (Ansuya style), a Glute Shimmy (Suhaila style), and a 3/4 tribal shimmy (both on the ups and the downs)..plus I add a little traveling in there. Switching around keeps you from exhausting any one muscle group and keeps you ready for any choreography! LOL

Oh yes - many years ago I took the workshop and own that video too. Aziza is pretty darned fantastic! I'm working towards doing 20 minutes of non-stop hip shimmies. I could shoulder shimmy until the cows came home, so I find switching between hips and shoulders to "feel" like cheating - But ya know.. that's just me.

Today I got to eight minutes before my caboose went off the rails...

Get Aziza's Ultimate Bellydance Practice Companion. She has a 23 minute shimmy drill that is KILLER. Now she does rotate between shoulder and hip shimmies and she does have some choo choos in there (the tip toe ones... is that the only term for those?) as well as different poses while you shimmy. I was surprised that after only a few runs through the video I could do the entire shimmy exercise. The first few times though, my legs were like gummy worms!

Heartbeat of Bellydance also has a good long shimmy exercise. I am working up to doing both back to back (with a quick break in between to switch DVDs!)

I'll join in that challenge, I've been working on the tip-toed version (forget the actual terms) and have it up to about 5 minutes at medium speed before starting to putz out. Not sure where I'm starting on the 20min goal but I know I'm not there yet (yet being the main word there). It's good to have goals!

Hey Gang,

During the month of April, I'm trying to work up to a 20 minute shimmy. My goal is stamina and strength. I want these shimmies to show! Is anyone else interested in joining me in working towards this goal?

If you are already there, can you share with us some golden advice?
