Hi Cindy
I've been doing FIRM for many years but not always consistently ( isn't that always the problem?). I am 50 & am looking forward to getting back my svelte shape that I held onto for a long time. Had major life transition (moving to a diff country) so I need to get back to consistently working out with FiIRM in the early a.m., eating clean w/ lots of veggies and some fruit and staying active and journaling. Looking forward to support and b supported! That's it!! I'm going to workout right NOW with Janet Jones (FIRM 3).
THANX for listening. Ttfn!

I usually track it and other workouts that mix cardio and strength training as circuit training.

Hi there, You look perfect!! You've come a long way. Are you doing just Firm exercise? Or what else if anything else. Do you watch your diet? Do you drink alcohol? I am sorry for these questions but it is because I admire how perfect you look. I'm trying to figure out what I need to change.

Hey, just wanted to say, I had trouble tracking correctly, and I took the advice from this thread and got a heart rate monitor. I love it! I got the New Balance N4 that has the chest strap and thinner wrist band. I love that I can wear it as a watch (it has a time function), too and it doesn't look like a bulky thing on my wrist. I dropped $70 on it at Target, but I feel it was completely worth it. I have been burning between 400-600 calories per workout, and I was definately not tracking them correctly before. I kept saying I was burning about 800 calories per hour doing a Firm tape! I was not losing any weight for the first month! I reset my goals on the day I got the montior and it gives me an accurate amount of calories to eat in accordance with how much I'm burning. It is such a help to have an accurate reading and now I'm finally starting to lose weight!

hello. My name is Cindy. I am new here but not to the Firm. I have been doing the Firm for over 10 yrs. I love it. I'm 51 now. I do Firm workouts 3 days a week, and I walk 5 miles twice a week. I need to lose 15 lbs. I "fell off the wagon" for a little while. Anyone here in their 50's?
Cindy

If you subscribe to the firm believers site, there is a compendium that breaks down most of the workouts into detailed descriptions so you can keep track.

This is driving me crazy! I did one of the strength only DVDs today. So in order to track it I need to rewatch the DVD so I can count how many reps there are of each exercise so I can go back and log it correctly. I'm not concerned with the calorie counts SP gives, I just want to keep track of what weights I'm using for each thing and (to be honest) how far I get into the video before I can't do any more. I really wish there was a way to just put that I strength trained for x amount of minutes.

I take classes at the gym too, and they are not listed in the list of classes, so I have been wearing a heart monitor with a calorie counter to monitor my fitness. I don't track strength training right now, because almost every cardio class I take involves strength at some point, and it is too hard for me to keep track. So I just track it as cardio, and do user entered exercises with the amount of calories that I burned. I just keep in my mind that I am doing strength excercises.

One week, one day, one hour, one minute, one breath at a time.

I keep it pretty simple. I enter the name of the video, and the segment, if it's broken up, under my strength section, then enter the total minutes under cardio as circuit training. My main point under strength is to track upper, lower and abs for rotation. My new Wave arrived today and I'm looking forward to adding it.

Okay. Tried track Hi-Def Sculpt and it took forever and couldn't find half the exercises. Plus I have no idea how many reps. Just took my best guess. Question, where do you find circuit training on the tracker? I haven't been able to find it.

The idea from a post the first of the year is great - to create a custom for the videos, since they give you minutes for each type of exercise. I'm new to the team and want to say it's incredibly inspiring. The Firm is by far the best way I've ever found to lose weight and get in great physical condition. Thanks Firm Belivers for the inspiration.

I've read through this thread and this newbie is still confused about tracking FIRM workouts. Could someone tutor me? I really would like to track calories burned on non-straight cardio workouts, but I'm not sure how to do it. When I tried to add my own strength activity, I don't see the option for total body, just core, upper or lower.

Thanks for the note. I too just purchased a garmin watch which records heart rate, mileage, miles per hour, steps, etc. I also got the pod for the bicycle and the weight scale. Everything downloads to the computer. It is amazing. However the best tool I have ever used for diet is sparkpeople. I am addicted. I have a degree in health education and find this a great tool. I have also been doing the firm tapes for over 25 years. The firm videos are comprehensive. i prefer the older ones to the new ones.

I used to try to find the right thing to pick in the fitness tracker to equal my Firm workouts. Honestly, I broke down and bought a heart rate monitor and the readings were much different. Actually, more calories burned. And mine also registers the fat burned as well. It's really the best investment I've ever made, because I'm a numbers girl, I love to see my hard workout registered into actual numbers.

Thanks for your response. I too wish we had a more accurate way to account for each firm tape because the weight lifting seems to be overlooked. Maybe we should ask the firm to do that... I just got a garmin running watch, it is wonderful for keeping a record of miles, steps, calories, heart rate . I have to learn all of its applications. I do enjoy the spark people! It really has helped me diet.

Depending on the DVD I'm using that day, I will either log the workout in under circuit training, if it's mostly sculpting, or as high impact aerobics or step aerobics. I don't think the amount of calories burned which comes up is accruate though because I KNOW I burn alot more calories doing these workouts as what shows up when I log them in. I wish SP could add the Firm workouts on the fitness tracker.

The total calories burned seem a little high, I usually log it as circuit training and it has not come up as that high.

I use that workout video too and I love it! I'm always switching the tree vids up each week.

I just got the "Core solutions" with Allison Davis yesterday - anyone have any ideas as to how much that burns??

Yesterday was my first time doing The FIRM. I did Cardio Sculpt with Allie Del Rio. I logged it as circuit training for 55 minutes and it said I burned 816 calories!!! Does this seem right?

i too enjoy most of the firm dvds but do not know how to post them on fitness page. Do you just claim a number of calories or can you post them so you get credit for strength exercises as well? I am new to this so please email me the answer ccc1207@comcast.net The firm dvds provide a tough workout. Thanks for your help.

Hi there,
great thread... I also had the same question of trackin the FIRM workouts! I love them all, I googled some of the workouts like Cardio overdrive and Hard Core Fusion workouts and i found for both of them approx. you burn 350 - 400 calories! i don't know if it's ok just to put an estimate within this range!!

Don't worry.. Be Happy...

I think all that I can at this point is to get a heart rate monitor. I am thinking the polar f6 as other posters have mentioned. It is very confusing to me and I document in the notes field exactly what I do but I really do not know if how (type) I am entering is close to accurate or not so I might try circuit training. I just wish Spark would add the Firm to their pick list.

I had this problem when I first started on SP. I just use the cardio to track my work outs instead of trying to split them up. I found out later that it was underestimating my calories burned, so I use my HR monitor to add my calories myself.

I agree with Biogirl it should be tracked as circuit training.Circuits are when you do cardio and strength together.

SP was underestimating the calories I was burning. The only way was to get a hr monitor. You can find them on craigslist and ebay for less than in the store.

The cardio is fairly easy to track, it's the strength training that leaves me confused and frustrated.
I've started using and adding the Spark workout videos to help track, picking the one that seems to the closest. If the FIRM video is sculpting and approx. 40 minutes then I add the "20-minute dumbbell workout" to my tracker, showing 2 sets. If the workout had some ad work then I find an ab workout that looks close and add that.
Alot quicker and easier than try to track each exercise and the number of reps. I tried that and it didn't work for me! I was so busy trying to remember exercises and the number of reps that I wasn't getting a very good workout - to much mental work going on!!
I love that the FIRM videos give a break down on the back (abs, lower body, upper body, aerobics) and the number of minutes for each.

I always log mine as circut training, as circut training is doing different activites(typically strength training with cardio) in intervals like the Firm does.

Great thread everyone! I'm making this a sticky topic. This question is asked every so often and certainly deserves a spot here under the rotations section. So, my answer is ----- it depends.

If it is a cardio tape it's X minutes of step aerobics. If its a cardio/sculpt tape, I split it 50/50 with strength training. If its a sculpt tape, its x minutes of strength training. I think I get pretty close to what the caloric expenditure should be that way.

Under the Cardio section - other excersices you're able to choose Wii Fit, kickboxing (including Turbo Jam), pilates, Curves circuit training. I think cardio/strength training intervals (including FIRM) should be added as an option. Sure would make tracking so much easier (and quicker!).

I go in and create a custom ONCE for each tape and save it. Then you just have to choose "Add workout" for the whole thing. It's time consuming for the one time, then it's just as simple as adding anything else.

Doing my best...one day at a time.

The cardio sections of the workouts seem easy enough to track on the fitness tracker but I'm still confused with the weight trng sections.
When I do the Winsor Pilates workouts they're easy because you can choose "pilates" as a workout option but I don't see a "weight/strength training" option. Keeping track of each move and entering them separately under Strength Training seems very time consuming.
How do you track the strength/toning sections of the FIRM workouts?

This is great information. I'm just started my Firm CardioWeight System today. I went on sparkpeople and was wondering how to log in the information.

Thanks!

I've used that one out of the set a lot, too. emoticon I started with the FIRM in 1989 with the Susan Harris workout and have been hooked since! I just love 'em. I recently got the WAVE. It's fun but not nearly as challenging as some of the others. If you like Emily's Complete Aerobics you might also like "get chisled" or "500 calorie workout". They are kick butt.

the tape I am using the most lately is Complete Aerobics and weight training with Emily. It's 62 minutes long but well worth the time. the end has a great abdominal section that I really need. I do find though that I really have to concentrate to keep up since they move from move to move prety fast and I still can't keep up with the L step. One great thing about it is they have a beginner demonstrater in the group for newbies to follow.

Okay, that makes sense. I wasn't sure because with the FIRM you are often doing cardio and strength at the same time. But I guess it's safe to assume 50% is cardio and 50% is strength. I love those Fanny Lifter tapes! They are some of my favorites. :)

I log in each area seperatly. Most of the tapes will tell you how long the stretch or warm up is and then the cardio segments. I use tapes that use the fanny lifter and I log those segments as step areobics.

I'm new to SP so I haven't figured this all out yet. How do you record your firm workouts on the Fitness Tracking page? I didn't see where I could choose "FIRM" as an exercise.

LOVE THE FIRM!
