I use a broomstick for sculpting stick moves where it's only used for balance. If I need a weighted bar, I use dumbbells. We just recently bought a weight bench with a bar, so I will start to use that in time.

Sorry for resurrecting this "thread from the dead" emoticon, but I just wanted to say that Danskin used to make a weighted barbell. The actual bar, padded, weighed 6 lbs alone and then came with a basic set of (standard) plate weights. The standard set brought the barbell up to 22 lbs and the bar itself was sturdy enough to permit additional weights up to a total of (I think) 40 lbs. I just have the basic plate set, and it's all I've ever needed.

Amazon used to carry these, but it's currently listed as "out of stock" and they're not sure when they'll be getting more (and Danskin no longer shows them on its website). But if you keep an eye out, you might find them on ebay or craigslist or some such.

I totally love mine and gave away my Sculpting stick because the Danskin bar is so much more versatile.

Also, I like the sculpting stick, but you can modify by using weights or a dowel.

Barbara,
They have a summer sale at the firm now. I think the Transfirmer is on sale for a low price. I wouldn't want to make a step that is unstable. The transfirmer is a good investment, especially when it is on sale! :-)

I too have completly modified their equipment. I have a home-made box for a fanny lifter. Had hubby build me a box to the required height. Works great. I use dumbbells insted of twigs, for the longest time, I too just used a broom stick for balance, graduated to dumbbells in place of the sculpting stick, and then purchased a weighted bar at a fitness store. Mine was 6lbs when I purchased it, and that weight lasted about 1 week. (curses!)So I am back to dumbbells until I purchase another heavier stick. (but the dumbbells work just fine!)
The only thing I need hubby to make for me now is a step that I can lower on one end so I can fully participate in some of the exercises that use that method. (call me cheap!)

Tessa-

You can use the sculpting stick in any of the older FIRMs that use a barbell such as Volume 6 (aka the Boomers workout), Super Sculpting, Bust and Butt, etc. I sometimes use the sculpting stick as a dowel for balance as well.

I have BSS2 and the stick. What other Firm videos can I use with it? I've only just started with the 3 videos that came with the system, but I'm really wishing I had some shorter or different videos for variety.

Any recommendations for other Firm videos that I can use the fanny lifter and the scultping stick for?

Proud Mommy to Fiona!

i saw it on ebay for relatively cheap, and i heard horror stories about the version 1 sculpting stick, and i figure if it's really only for balancing, there's no neeed :)

Often they use the stick for balance, for example, doing lunges or climbing the tall box. For those sections I use the broomstick. In other sections they use the stick for sculpting moves. For those sections, I usually use 5# dumbbells, for a total weight of 10#. For the warm up they use the stick for light cardio, and I use either 3 or 5# dumbbells. I don't use the broomstick and weights together...I tried it, but it was too cumbersome. Just go with what feels right. In at least one section the stick is used to add extra challenge in ab work. I either use the broomstick or nothing. I have enough trouble doing those ab sections without adding extra weight!!

so those who use the dowel/broom stick
do you just hold the broomstick and weights, or just use your own bodyweight for that part?

I have this system and was my first Firm experience ,I love this system and in my opinion, for me the Cardio+ sculpt DVD that comes with it is more Challenging to me than the transfirmer,I don't have BSS3 DVD yet,I burn lots of calories with all the DVDs ..but I agree with all what said that you can easily change to either free weights or broom stick instead..,the only DVD I feel that I use it with most effectively is with the AB one with Nancy..still with some modifications I can use the free weights instead. I hope that helps

I agree about the 'twigs'. Anything they do with the twigs, I find that I can easily do with my 3# dumbbells. I wish I had a weighted bar for a few of the sculpting moves using the stick, like the abdominal work with Jen, and the standing leg work with Allie, but I haven't tried to find one locally.

Shellbug,
A dowel will do for the balance work if you have dumbbells for the resistance work. In fact, I don't use the 1-1/2# twigs for the workouts. I'll use 3 pounders instead (AR AR ARRRRR).

I have this system... it was the 1st one that I purchased from The Firm, the workouts are tough with the fanny lifter.. but I think you can subsitute something else for the stick.. it's used for balance and toning. It weighs 8lbs.. I like the idea of weighted bars but the trouble is as mentioned before you can't adjust the weight!!! Hope this helps!!

I'm hesitant about buying new equipment. I generally wait until I'm absolutely sure that I'm going to keep up with the workout. I've seen the weighted sticks at target and Dick's. If you want one, keep your eyes open for a deal. I don't have a sculpting stick because you can't adjust the weight on them. I do just fine without it!

I have the BSS2 DVDs and do not have the sculpting stick or fanny lifter. I find that when the stick is used for sculpting, I can usually use dumbbells, and when it is used for balance I use an old broomstick. After you do the workout a few times, you can figure out how to make modifications to match the equipment that you have. They are good workouts too. The step sections are not as complicated as BSS3, (the one with the tall box with folding legs).

i've seen other exercises that has the sculpting stick (in the classic-er Firms) an there is ONE new firm that acutally comes with it... apparently it's about 8ish pounds? so i've heard. i think it's more for balance as well, and when i asked the question i was told a broomstick would work fine :)

Is it really worth it to buy the sculpting stick? does it have weight to it? I belong to Blockbuster online and rent most of my Firm dvd's. I do own BBS1, TransFirmer System, and the Transfirmation. Anyway, I thought I would try the BSS2 but it shows a sculpting stick to use with the videos. Does anyone like this system? How do you like it compared to the others?

Thanks.....
