A P.S. on my last post here. I use 3M's Cavilon skin barrier wipes under the tape part of these skin barriers but not under the wafers themselves because it keeps them from adhering well and I don't have a problem with the adhesive on the wafer. It's just the adhesive on the tape around the wafer that makes me itch and turns my skin red. I had developed an allergy to some adhesives even before my surgery.

I've tried other skin barrier wipes and sprays, Smith & Nephew, Hollister's brand, and another I can't think of right now, but none of them worked well for me. I think it was Hollister's brand that actually made the tape stick better - too well. I pulled off skin with the tape when I removed it.

I've tried the ConvaTec wafer that they say is more flexible and it didn't work for me. In fact, I still have some samples in my stash. The thing with the Hollister FormaFlex wafers is you can't use anything like paste or the Eakin Seals with them, just a little stoma powder and/or anti-fungal powder that you've caked on (put on, dabbed with a slightly damp tissue, and then dried. I use my hair dryer). You know Hollister will send you all the samples you want. Here's the wafer's page:

I think I said this but I cut these instead of forming the opening with my fingers.

There's a good, but long, article on peristomal skin damage and caking on the powder:

I am also glad for your input BEBARB149. I am not a newbie but over the years, I noticed I need a change since I am having some issues. I currently use ConvaTec active life one piece pouch but when I am unable to get it have used the ConvaTec 2 piece pouch. I have noticed that I am able to not use the Eakin Seal under my pouch with this. The Eakin Seal is causing me issues after using it for over 16 years. I am going to get an appointment with the wound care center asap to try to get this issue solved. I had moved to a different state nearly 15 years ago. I don't care for the nurses here but am giving up and try again.

God bless you and hold you in the palm of his hand!

I use the moldable wafer from Hollister (formaFlex) but I cut it. The reason I use it is my abdomen is very soft and the moldable wafer is more flexible than the others and so stays put better. The reason I cut it is that my stoma is at skin level on one side and the little turtle neck that forms when you just pull the wafer to size causes problems for me.

well i have chosen to go with the ones you cut after trying some samples. Convetec is very good to send sample upon request. I am going to a much smaller hole in my wafer as i am unclear why i was using such a huge one when i need so tiny a one.

Thanks for all on their input.

I don't use those. Since my stoma was made April 06, I know the size is 1 inch. So I order that size already pre cut. It is on top of the stoma with no skin showing. I don't use paste or anything except for those prep wipes. It does sound like a great idea but I wouldn't be able to use my big bags with convatec. When I get the jpouch done...I will have to get used to a much lower stoma and need the convex wafer.

I use the moldables sometimes. I have issues with the adhesive so I don't wear it all the time. There are two types of wafer thickness... stomahesive and durahesive. Which you use, depends on the type of output you have.

You don't cut the moldables! An instruction sheet should come with your samples, but all you do is roll or push the opening to the shape of your stoma and apply the wafer. The material will eventually try to return to it's original size and in doing so, will "snug" itself up around the stoma without putting alot of pressure on it.

They're really good when you travel and maybe find yourself in a situation where you cant take a lot of time... or see clearly... just pull the wafer hole open and the thing makes it's own fit!
