I'm in the east bay (SF Bay Area) and we have a bakery - Mariposa baking company that has several locations. One in SF at the Ferry building and another in Oakland. There are a few more I believe. They also have things that are nut free, egg free, dairy free, etc. And they mail order.
w.mariposabaking.com/

Whole Foods in Berkeley and Oakland have GF foods, however, the Oakland store has a GF section, so it's almost one stop shopping.

Berkeley Bowl Market Place has two Berkeley, CA locations but Berkeley Bowl West has a GF/Raw foods section. It's not as big as the one at Whole Foods Oakland, but it works.

A lot of restaurants in the Bay are aware of GF things
Gather restaurant - Berkeley www.gatherrestaurant.com/
Spice Monkey - Oakland www.spicemonkeycafe.com/

As I come up with more, I will post them.

I have a sister that lives in Aurora, Colorado. My brother-in-law is also celiac. If you like bread, there is a bakery in Colorado called Canyon Bake house If you need to know where it is at, I will ask my sister. The bread is the best. Believe me, I have gone through a lot of breads and this is the only one that taste good even if it's not toasted.

I do not have the Triumph Dining Cards but not the dining guide. I will definitely look into it. Thanks for that information.

Take care

Hi everyone! I've enjoyed reading all the posts. I live near Denver, Colorado. I've had good luck with Bonefish Grill. They have always been very careful with our orders, and have many GF items on their menu. For a special night out we go to Vesta Dipping Grill in Denver. Fabulous food and the staff is terrific. They have a dedicated GF menu.

I also enjoy foods from Deby's Gluten Free Bakery. It is all GF. They have great baked goods (they often have cinnamon buns fresh from the oven when we go there - yum!). They also have several quick and prepared foods in their coolers (lasagna, breakfast burritos, ravioli, prepared pasta dishes to heat and eat). They also have a small space dedicated to ingredients and flour mixes. I'm limited in the grains I can eat so have not tried all the baking things, but have used their tortilla flour mix to make good home-made tortillas.

Many stores in this area carry GF - Whole Foods, Vitamin Cottage, King Soopers. However, there is a Vitamin Cottage in Lafayette that does an AMAZING job of stocking GF/allergen free foods. This is their store focus. Their staff is very well-informed as well, and their nutritionist is great about meeting with customers to help them learn how to eat after a Celiac or gluten intolerance diagnosis.

I saw some posts asking about GF dining in different areas. I own a GF Dining Guide from www.triumphdining.com. I get a new one each year. We just did a cross-country car trip, and used it extensively. They include restaurant names/addresses/phone numbers, details about GF items on the menu, some full GF menus for chains, and listings for restaurants that are 100% GF as well. We had an amazing meal at Posana Cafe (100% GF) in Asheville, NC this summer, thanks to our GF dining guide. If you travel, I'd highly recommend it.

Claireese, there are great GF restaurants here. I would trust Picazzo's wholeheartedly! Also there is a gluten free bakery here that is very trustworthy. I have been to some restaurants that claim they have gf items, but when I ask if the kitchen is equipped to cook separate it is not. If the place is certified through the Celiac Assoc (that is not the right name) I would trust it. Picazzo's is I know for sure. Very good food too.

I live in Chandler, Arizona and there are a lot of places you can get gluten-free products. Gilbert, Arizona has a Gluten-Free Country Store. Last night my daughter and I went to the Olive Garden in Chandler. They have a gluten-free menu but you have to ask for it. The manager came right over to our table when she found out that one of us had to be gluten-free.
She assured me that they cook it separately and even the plates and glasses were washed separately. They have a server who is gluten-free so they are very aware of what has to be done. The food was great. The manager came over several times to make sure everything was all right. It was a very pleasant experience. There are a lot of Piccazzo's (not sure I spelled it right) Resturants throughout Arizona. They have organic and gluten-free foods. Everything is cooked separately there also. They are very aware of what needs to be done.

I am Canadian but have been coming to Florida and am finding more and more grocery stores carrying GF products. Just picked up "Glutenfreeda" Wheat free- gluten free instant oatmeal. Comes in 3 flavors and is very good. Albertsons was where I found it.
Betty Crocker has some GF mixes and the brownies are very good.
We also have specialty stores and now some GF restaurants. Some bakeries are also selling GF foods. Seems being GF is becoming more popular.

I was just reading all of the posts and read the one from Tall_Laydee1 and she was talking about Celiac Specialties in Chesterfield Township in Michigan saying their shipping was expensive. I also order from them and they have another store in Rochester Hills, Mi.. Anyways I have ordered a few times from them and their products are good and I do not pay for shipping as if you order $50.00 or more the shipping is free. In fact, I placed an order last week and just got it today and I live in Arizona.

I meant to ask you if you mom eats any type of pastries/donuts, coffee cakes and breads? The reason for asking is there is a place that I order from in Michigan that is totally gluten free. They are called Celiac Specialties. You can check it out on the internet. The only thing is that you need to order $50.00 or more so you do not have to pay shipping costs. Their food is really good. So whether that will pay for your mom or not, that will be up to her.

I do not blame you for wanting to get away from the cold. I am originally from Michigan and like Arizona. The only thing is that gets really hot in the summer. Alot of people come in the winter and go back to their home town in the summer. Right now our weather is lovely as it is in the 70's.

Have a good day and hope that you find something for your mom.

Charlene: Thanks for reply. Lake Havasu ah, that's where my husband and I want to come next January and check a few things out to see if we would like to spend some of our retirement. Really tired of the cold here in ND and am in need for warmth but that will be some time yet.
All I find on restaurants so far are those who will accomodate you on your gluten free order. I don't suppose a person will find an all gluten free unless there are owners out there who are willing to do it because they need to be free from gluten and such. I will keep searching.

I do not know of any restaurants that are completely gluten-free. I know that I also have Celiac and I have gone to a pizza place here in town (Lake Havasu) and they have gf pizza and have had it several times and never got sick.
Have you tried getting up on the internet and checking that way to see if there is any place that is strictly gf. Good luck to you and if you find a place, let me know. Thanks.

I have seen on the web the restaurants that serve gluten free foods but I would not feel safe and neither does she if they have gluten in their kitchens. I was wondering if there are such restaurants that only serve gluten free and nothing else. Guess that's too much to expect from a restaurant. I know they try to help you out but getting sick while on vacation because of eating at a restaurant is not worth it. Thanks for trying to help.

What type of restaurants are you looking for? My sister sent me a list of rest. in Phoenix that has gf. I would call first to make sure that they do have gf.

Abuelo Mexican Rest. 480-513-4445
Outback steakhouse 602-943-2226 (they have more but call them and they can give the #'s to where you will be going.
Pie Zanos Kitchen
Pizza - it says gf pizza is available but to call ahead to confirm availability

These are all in Phoenix. If these are ok with your mom, I would call to make sure they do have gf menus.

Anyone from Phoenix? My mother is going there next month. She is 81 years old. She is the one who is celiac, not me, but I joined this forum for information from you great people to help her. My question is: gluten free restaurants...how can you be sure it won't be cross-contaminated? Are there such restaurants that only serve gluten free?

I was reading the posts and one of the caught my eye. It was from the person that was Detroit Metro. They said they buy from Celiac Specialties; however their shipping rates are high. I have been buying from them this year, and if you buy $50.00 or more there is no charge for the shipping fees. I buy the Orange/Cranberry Bread and the Croissant Style Rolls and both items are very good.

In case anyone did not know about the shipping prices, I wanted to pass this along.

I live in Seattle, but regularly drive down to Portland to meet friends at a wonderful, local Peruvian restaurant called Andina. The owners have celiac disease and provide a wide variety of interesting and inventive GF offerings. Superb!

Not sure where to post this...I am so thankful that there is growing awareness of gluten intolerance. This weekend I am going to a conference and they are fully aware of GF and are preparing for the us special foods, cooked and served separately for the weekend.

Not sure where to post this-I had posted this on a celiac thread the other day- its in regards to Sammi's Bakery.. Im still mad :( best bread I have been able to find. So just a warning. I was fine with 2-3 slices a week- but not daily!
wow.. I can not believe that that bread is bad I am soo mad. I have been eating it on off for months.. since last fall... and just until a month or so ago, I was eating it more reg.. like almost one slice daily.. well, I never had any issues before and for the past month I have had the same dizzy/heavyness things happening to the right side of my head(no pain) just dizzy but weakness too.

Searching on the internet, I seen a thread last week that said Sammi's bread was not ok. I brushed it off!! gosh!! why??? lol.. I guess I too figured this bread was ok, being I had been having it for so long and honestly, I LOVE this bread. it even has NO sugar! so anway..they were getting worse all weekend and then this week. Tuesday something told me.. maybe it IS that bread. and I had been eating one slice with almsot each meal and sometimes 2 slices for a sandwich rather than just one.. so on Tuesday (5-19) I had my last peice. I had a few spells yesterday but noticed they were less.. and today not ONE so far.. its crazy. and when I first found outt 2 years ago I couldnt not have gluten I had been tired, and all the symptoms for about 3 weeks and within 2 days of removing gluten I had my energy back and within 4 days I all my braingfog/dizzy etc was gone! So I knew if it was the bread it wouldnt (probably take too long to find out).. so its bittersweet.. I just got my hubby to finally start eating it cause its so much better than reg. bread! My health food store says the same, that its gluten-free.. but Im sure that is what they are told.
anway... had to come and post beause I just want to be another voice out here on this bread. its so sad.. and I when I first came across a thread from a googel search.. I didnt believe it.. now today I find all this.. so here is one more.. maybe one day I can go back to just having one piece, just a couple times a week.. but for now.. its not going near my mouth!!!

Hello GF Friends,
I am sending out an invitation to all in the area. Gulf Coast Celiac.org in South Mississippi meets every month and our leader, Elizabeth Smith, will post the venue for our future meeting as they get confirmed. We do not have a regular meeting hall and the attendance July’08 was over 50 people (50% undiagnosed). Elizabeth works hard to get all the news out to us and had to cancel Aug meeting at the Outback Steak House (An Auzzie treat!) due to Tropical Storm Fay. Next location will be announced A.S.A.P. Elizabeth also gets a consensus of our wants and needs and adjusts when she can. Our last meeting we had a Guest Speaker, A RN from Louisiana. Check out the site and check us out if you happen to be in the area!

PS To my old SP friends - It's been a very rough journey... My beloved, healthy, athletic, tall, dark and handsome husband died in August 2012 from a very aggressive cancer... This is wonderful info and exactly what a newbie to the area would want to know! I'm concerned they wouldn't know to look for info for Detroit, etc., under this header ... could you copy your post over to the Michigan thread under this same forum?

Same for everyone unless it's something generic you want to share!

I'm in Metro-Detroit and aside from Whole Foods and Trader Joe's which are great GF resources there is a 100% gluten free bakery on the eastside.

Celiac Specialties in Chesterfield Township, they have so many options available and they'll ship to you (although their shipping costs are pretty high)

Twin Cities, MN... they've got a website that's been VERY helpful for finding GF shopping AND dining options!

Shopping: northlandceliacs.fastmail.fm/shoppin

our personal favorite is Fresh and Natural Foods... all you have to do is look for the red label on the shelves!

and Dining: northlandceliacs.fastmail.fm/dining.

I'm afraid the only ones I can comment on personally are Chipotle & Pei Wei - but BOTH of those are very knowledgeable & will do things like change gloves, wipe counters down, and offer GF options at no cost :)

Dotslady, I hope this is what you're looking for:

I live in Reno, Nevada, and we have a Wild Oats, and are currently in the process of building a Whole Foods. As far as grocery stores, Raley's is a local chain that concentrates most on special dietary needs, and they have a GF section. Nearly every neighborhood in Reno/Sparks has a local Raley's. If you want to eat out, you MUST try the Dandelion Deli! The owner always has a GF option on the daily lunch special, and it's delicious! But he's only open Monday through Saturday, until 4pm.

So what have you learned today? Nothing? Well, you better get going, before it turns into tomorrow and you've wasted your chance.

Provincial/State and local gluten-free resources go here (please feel free to add your references/experiences for other countries if there is no thread already started, ie Australia, England, etc). If you were new to the gf lifestyle and wanted to know where to go for shopping, restaurants and who to see- - -

Topics could include, but are not limited to (please add what you think would be helpful for a gluten-free newbie or traveler):

-Recommended (or otherwise) doctors, hospitals, nutritionists
-Grocery stores naming brands of gluten-free foods
-Local upcoming group support events and links to that site, camps
-GF products made and available locally and info on distribution

If you think of something, I can surely come back to edit this list to give others ideas.

Thanks everyone!
