a quick question:
does being gluten-free help YOU to lose weight? I'm finding that being gluten-free is making me gain weight, since the effects of Celiac disease were helping me lose weight, although I WAS uncomfortable....

emoticon GENTLE NUDGE/reminder: for other people looking for info specific to their location, it'd be nice to read a "clean" list of info. I love your conversations, just wondered if you'd mind taking or starting these talks in a new thread over in General Team Discussion Forum? Here's some great info for you, your kids and parents to consider Leigh Ann:

Individuals new to Illinois might be pleased to know that the U of Chicago is a learned source of study for Celiac Disease:

http://www.celiacdisease.net/

The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center will host its annual free blood screening on Saturday, October 6, 2007 from 8:30 am until 12:30 pm. We will also host an interactive panel of experts for a brief presentation and Q&A at 11am.

Pre-Registration is required.

Please call 773-702-7593 to register.

Annual Free Celiac Blood Screening
Every fall we hold a free, celiac blood screening day to test people who are at risk for celiac disease. Each year we test nearly 500 participants, who come to the University of Chicago from all over the country. Many of the participants would not otherwise have had access to celiac disease testing, either because their doctors refused to carry out the tests, their insurance would not cover the cost or they were uninsured altogether.

You are eligible for the free blood screening if you are at risk for celiac disease.

Pre-registration for the screening is essential. You may register by calling our office at (773) 702-7593 for the next screening on October 6, 2007. Registration opens on August 15, 2007. We will require a brief phone consultation before you register, to determine your eligibility.

The blood screening is held on the 4th Floor of the University of Chicago Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine. The test performed is the tTG-IgA, or anti-tissue transglutaminase test. This test is the most sensitive screening test available for celiac disease. Please visit their site for directions. ( http://www.celiacdisease.net/free-blood-sc
reening)

Well, you might CONSIDER packing up your own dinner in Tupperware and bringing it along with you to your Mom's house and eating it there with the family. If she sees what you CAN eat, and if you do this a few times, maybe she'll understand????

Thanks for the advice, but I am partly to blame at first I only ate GF then I started cheating at her house--I did not realize until recently that I was not helping myself--so now she thinks it is ok to cheat--tonight dinner was corn, green beans )my daughter wanted them) fish sticks (breaded of course), and realy mac and cheese with velveeta cheese! then to top off the diet she pulls out somer mint choclate chip ice cream--It is better to eat at home then try to change her right now-

LLAMMINAR I suggest you do talk to you Mom and help her understand what you can and cannot eat. There is no need to suffer in silent. Everyone has a lot on their plate. Your Mom’s needs are not more important than your needs.

My Mom lives with us and it has taken her a few months to understand my diet. She’ll make a dinner of steak, rice and salad and because the steak has soy sauce and the rice mix had MSG and the salad has crotons, I can’t eat! I had to patiently explain to her why I could not eat the meal she had prepared. It had taken many explanations but she is starting the get it now.

Do not look where you fell, but where you slipped.

My mom knows I am trying to lose weight, but she does not look at what she is doing as sabatoge--she is just cooking what she always have--I can eat what I want or not---I would never say much to her--she has a lot on her plate right now--she has gained a lot of weight recently, her father died in February after her father-in-law had just died the September before-( I had all four of my grandparents until I was 32--something not all people can say) still hard !--and my father is about to under go his second back surgery in less then a year--oh add to that she is in menopause---I will just suffer in silence at their house and then wine here-I guess

As for where in Illinios--Caseyville to be exact--right outside of St Louis Mo--I work in down town St Louis-right behind the Edward Jones Dome--home of the Rams--

I understand completely! Does your mom know that you're losing weight, and that she's sabotaging you by having you do that? In any restaurant, I ask the waiter not to bring bread to the table; if it's in arm's reach, that's too much for me. And I certainly can't handle bread for others without eating it!
Where in Illinois are you, anyway?
I grew up in Chicago and then lived in the Western suburbs and in Peoria and Champaign- Urbana until we came to the East Coast.

I know going out is so hard! I love the smells of fresh bread and so many places bring you hot bread to your table that is my down fall--as I proved today at my mothers--I had to cut the french bread, spread the garlic spread and put it in the oven--like I really can just stop there and not have a piece! I ate salad instead of lasanga, but no garlic bread---yeah right!

We found this tiny bakery-sub-shop on the corner of Belmont Avenue and Manheim Rd. near Franklin Park (where my beloved grew up, suburban Chicago) and we were SO hungry. They prepared an incredible antipasto salad for me after I explained my gluten-free needs. Of course, the beautiful desserts all around smelled fabulous, but I KNOW what they'll do to me!

I live in Illinois, but near the Missouri border--to get much selection I have to go to St Louis for GF stuff--Whole Foods in Clayton-by the Galleria--I get the best waffle/pancake mix there--I have never tried the pancake part--I love waffles and this stuff is great--make them in your waffle maker-cool them off and freeze--the let go of my eggo good---I wish I could tell you the name, but I am out right now --it is a litte blue bag-makes 2 or 3 batches of 8 waffles at a time!
I just stick to meat and potatoes at resturants--easier--sometimes a salad--then steak and baked potatoe--love them!

Just visited relatives in Illinois. Restaurants were happy to cook to my specifications (Red Lobster, hole in the wall places, etc.) and corn on the cob was great everywhere. No problems..Of course, no breads any where either! No gluten-free breads or cereals available in restaurants but they were in grocery stores, and I went into restaurants with my own cereals in hand and no problems!
