I am in Sanford and while not celiac, at least not officially, I have been gluten free about 6 months now and feel so much better. I have found a cookbook that is in my opinion the best thing purchased since the change in diet. "1,000 Gluten-Free Recipes" by Carol Fenster. I ordered it through Amazon and is worth every penny. I haven't found a bad recipe yet. I drive to Cary/Raleigh to Whole Foods for most of my ingredients, but have found a few online places more convenient.

I live in the Fayetteville area. I was just, (like 1 week ago just) diagnosed with CD, and am stunned that there isn't a support group in this area. Asheville is a 4+ hr drive and Raleigh is over an hour, not to mention the trafic nightmare. I wish there was one here. Maybe I will need to start one? Not that i am in any position to support others, i need the support! but to have other newbies to stress with would be a good thing.

Another Raleigh option is Natty Greene's. Be advised that this place brews their own beer. I wouldn't typically try a brewery for a gluten free meal, but I had a long meeting there one day. While talking to a friend about trying to find something gluten free a bartender informed that an employee there with Celiac helped to create a GF menu. They don't actually hand out the menu, but most of their servers know what it is and can get a copy of it. I went back there today and while I was ordering my meal with the GF options the server asked me if I was avoiding gluten, it turns out she was the one that created the menu.

Here are some Raleigh restaurants to check out.

Bella Monica
3121 Edwards Mill Road ste. 103
Raleigh, NC 27612-5369
(919) 881-9778

http://www.bellamonica.com/restaurant.ht
ml

Bella Monica is an Italian restaurant with a gluten free menu. I had the ravioli and it was delicious. They also serve GOOD gluten free pizzas (which can also be found in the freezer section of Earth Fare and Whole Foods).

Mellow Mushroom (an Atlanta based chain with restaurants all over NC)
601 West Peace Street
Raleigh, NC 27605-1519
(919) 832-3499

www.mellowmushroom.com

They make one of the best GF pizzas I have ever had. The price is fairly reasonable too. The only downside is the place is often busy and parking can be tough, but it's worth the wait. I hear they also have Redbrige beer, but I am not a huge beer drinker so I haven't asked.

Zpizza (also a chain of sorts, but I'm not that familiar with it)
9630 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh
(919) 844-0065

www.zpizza.com

The pizza is pretty good, but the price is insane! A personal sized pizza will cost you $13 before tip.

Rosie's Plate
701 North Person Street
Raleigh, NC 27604-1215
(919) 833-0505

www.rosiesplate.com

Although this place is practically up the street from my house I have only tried it once. They have a completely GF kitchen, but it is a take out restaurant. The prices are very high and the food is okay, but not any better than I could make at home for less. I give it a lot of credit for the convenience though. I did have some yummy foccacia bread from there.

I have eaten at Posana in Asheville, it's AMAZING! I can confirm that everything from their kitchen is GF, but they don't advertise that. They do carry regular beer at the bar though.

Here are some other options:

The Laughing Seed (all vegetarian with GF options)
40 Wall Street
Asheville, NC 28801
828-252-3445

The Green Sage (veg and GF options, but also serves meat)

GROCERIES

I have found good gluten-free stuff at Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods, and Farm Fresh groceries (mostly Bob's Red Mill and Pamalas mixes). But if you looking for a wide variety of products and brands I would suggest:
1. Earth Fare which is in Greensboro, Asheville, Boone and Charlotte
2. Whole Foods Market which is in Cary, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham, and Winston Salem
