I'd forgotten about this thread.
I went to Seaside over the weekend and had a good lunch at Duggars. There GF menu was a photocopy of the regular menu with gluten items blacked out placed in a plastic sheet, kind of cheesy but it let the waitress know before I could say anything then reiterated what the hostess told me. Which was that 'they aren't Celiac approved yet but the cooks are very good at making sure of no CC'. Just the fact that they volunteered the info and actually said 'Celiac' impressed me, most places you say Celiac and the eyes glaze over.

Excellent service and came to check that I wasn't reacting several times.

They also have a restaurant in Cannon Beach.

On the other hand, we stopped at Camp 18 on the way home. I've had breakfast a number of times safely, but this was early dinner. The waitress was flippant and wouldn't even try to find out what was safe and what wasn't.

Couple of Oregon updates:

Subway is now testing their Gluten-Free bread in most Portland stores. I have heard from a friend who told me that the Subway in West Linn is also serving the Gluten-free bread. I have had three GF sandwiches at Subway and all of them have been VERY good. When I ordered the GF bread, the woman behind the counter washed her hands, changed her gloves, got a fresh towel and wiped down all of the handles of the toasters and got fresh utensils to cut the bread with. And, the bread is GOOD. I also tried the GF brownie (it's dairy free as well as gluten-free)--very good as well. I LOVE being able to just "grab" a sandwich.

I attended a conference in Sun River and had two very pleasant experiences. When I asked about the dessert that was being served, the waitress went and asked the chef about it to see if it was GF. It wasn't, so she told me that the chef was going to make something special for me. Way above and beyond what I expected, so I talke to the manager to give the waitress an "atta girl". The next night at dinner, they had a special plate for me and were so very nice about making sure it was nice and hot when I arrived. So, if you are going to an event at Sun River resort, just let them know about your restrictions and they will take care of it.

dots--I had a cupcake from Laurel's Sweet Treats today! It was pretty good--it was dairy free as well as gluten free.

Also, there is a store in Vancouver called Lingonberries Market. They are gluten-free store. They have tons of sauces, baked goods, etc.

They sell a bread called "Jensen's" and it's very good. I will tell you now that Mr.Jensen is a customer of mine. But, he's got a great product, so I can vouch for him. He just put out a multi-grain bread that I am going to try tomorrow!

Excellent, thanks Jen. My parents live in Portland, as does a brother. When I go to visit or move back away from hurricanes and oil spills I may want to visit these places. I will be moving away from grandkids! Why can't I be two places at once? I guess $$ makes all the difference.

I forgot about this post, oops.
Virgo and Pisces must've closed sometime last fall. I was laid off for a few months so didn't get a chance to go in, when I went back to work in January I went to call in an order and the # was disconnected, then drove by to see dark windows. I was so heartbroken.

I recently found that Papa's Pizza has GF pizza and takes cross contamination seriously. They have a separate part of the kitchen, color coded utensils, and a special riser for the oven so the GF pizza doesn't touch where gluten pizza has been. The workers wear a special red apron so if they touch a gluten counter it'll show and they change their apron and gloves.
I only tried a bite at the GIG food fair so can't say how good it is. I'll be there next week for my bowling leagues dinner. I'll share my experience afterwards.

So, I never did get to Virgo and Pisces to try their gluten-free options (pizza and pasta)--and now they're closed! Apparently that corner of NW 21st and Glisan is cursed.

Anyway, I found another excellent restaurant that is almost entirely gluten-free! It's a mexican restaurant called Nuestra Cocina. It's on SE Division, near SE 21st. Here is a link to their site:

nuestra-cocina.com/index.html

I asked about the menu and our waiter told us that everything is gluten-free, with the exception of the desserts. However, I would still probably ask about individual dishes, because you never know unless you ask*. You can order off the small plate menu and be guaranteed to go home FULL and happy and unglutenated. :)

When I went, I had the sopes--which were spicy, but delicious and I shared a couple of tacos and an order of the enchiladas verde.

The second time I went, I had the cactus salad and pork tacos.

The first time we went, the service was very, very good. The second time, when I took my sister out for her birthday, the service was a little slow, but still friendly.

*Regarding not asking whether or not something is gluten-free--I made that mistake on Saturday at a taco truck. Forgot to ask about the Sopes and just dug in. I asked afterward and was told the hand made tortillas have a little wheat flour in them. I didn't suffer too badly, but I should have asked. I am usually pretty good about asking, have gotten a lot less self-conscious about it, but I still sometimes forget or make assumptions. Ah, me. ;)

A friend of a friend has wheat allergies and our friend in common shares finds to the other person.
She just found and shared with me - Pastini Pastaria
www.pastini.net/menu.html
There are a few locations(one being less then a mile from me - oh no too convenient lol)
When I asked about GF and cross contamination they told me that the GF noodles are cooked in a separate area and that meatballs, ranch dressing, Gonzalo dressing(I think) and one of the sauces had gluten the rest is safe.

My dish came with penne pasta and were a little overdone but thats the way I prefer so not a problem for me. It was very good, I almost ordered a 2nd order to go but held back.

Oregon is a wonderful place to get the cutting edge research in the latest in vitamin and mineral health advancements. The University of Oregon at Corvallis is in the forefront L-Carnitine and its precursor, gamma-butyrobetaine /CoQ10 heart disease recovery and prevention studies as noted by the programs of Dr Linnis Pauling famous for research on vitamin “C”. Per capita it is also one of the highest naturopathic medicine clinics and herbal stores per city. So the environment is condusive to restarurants and health foods stores with GF foods. i used to live there when my son was little.

Hey, thanks! I work not far from there and I know what you mean about the parking.

Oh, yeah and speaking of pizza--Bellagio's over on Jefferson does a Gluten-free pizza but it's $13 or $14 just for a personal sized pizza. Too small to split and too big to get for myself.

I am going to experiment with making my own GF pizza dough soon though.

I just discovered Virgo and Pisces or is it Pisces and Virgo.
I was trying a new way to work and right on the corner was a sandwich board saying they have GF pizza. When I got off work I went there and got a pizza. It was TO DIE FOR! I got the Alfreda, spinach, mushroom pizza. A 14" or medium pizza was only $12.95
They also have rice noodles if you want pasta.

Their website says the GF food is in a dedicated part of the kitchen :)

The bad part - its at NW 21st and Glisan so parking is a bitch(excuse my language but if you know the area you know what I'm talking about).

Another find--Corbett Fish House and Hawthorne Fish House--they serve essentially the same food as they are owned by the same people, but I can only vouch for Corbett Fish House--almost EVERYTHING on their menu is GF--they told us that it was an accident originally--they were playing around with batters for their fish and discovered that rice flour made the lightest tasting batter and then someone told them rice flour was gluten free and they thought, "Hey, we might be on to something here", so they took steps to make their kitchen gluten free--they do make some sandwiches with regular bread and you can get flour tortillas with the fish tacos, so if you go with someone who is not GF, they have options too. All of their breads and desserts are sourced locally.

My husband and I ventured over there last Friday and had a very good meal. I had two fish tacos and hubby had the fish and chips. Very good and the batter was AWESOME--very light, so you could still taste the fish and nothing was too greasy. My two tacos were HUGE and not very expensive.

Here is a link: www.corbettfishhouse.com/

The service was very, very good--all of the staff we interacted with were enthusiastic (but sincere) and very nice.

Hi--I posted this elsewhere, but wanted to post it here too because I have found some great places that are GF in Portland--we have a wonderful food culture and (mostly) accomodating chefs (had a somewhat negative experience at Le Pigeon last night--disappointing because it is one of our favorite restaurants)--Plus dotslady asked me to repost it. :)I've added to it and will continue to update as I discover places in Portland that are safe places to eat. DH and I are "foodies", so I'll be posting a lot. :)

I wanted to tell everyone about a dedicated GF bakery in Portland--they aren't "new", but they just opened a new, bigger space and have plans to create a GF pizzeria! I am so excited--I love their GF chocolate cupcakes and they have sourdough bread! Anyway, it's called New Cascadia and it's on SE 6th and Market. Here is their website address:

www.newcascadiatraditional.com

I chatted with the owner for a little bit this past Saturday--she said that their web designer went AWOL, so they can't update their hours or their phone number or anything.

--They will be doing pizze soon (next couple of months), but their hours are from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, so unless I leave early from work--no pizza for me. They do sell pizza dough though!!

Also, if you go--get there early. We got there at about 2:00 pm on Saturday and they were down to 1 cupcake and some brownies--I got the last cupcake :) I bought a paremsan loaf, but froze it, so I don't know how good it is. I'm looking forward to trying it tomorrow.

Couple other discoveries:

Sweetpea bakery on SE Stark--they're a vegetarian/vegan bakery and they also have several GF items--including some cookies that totally ROCKED. The woman behind the counter told me that if they are given at least 48 hours, they will do custom GF cakes as well. :)

Corbett Fish House and Hawthorne Fish House--Totally Gluten-free fish and chips-they use rice flour as their batter!!

Mai Thai at SE 31st and Belmont--I've eaten there twice since being diagnosed and both times they were able to give me delicious foods that were GF. If you go and Tu is your waiter, just be sure to tell him that you can't have any gluten/wheat and he will hook you up!
