That's when I started eating them for real--when I did Atkins years ago. It was "way cool" to be able to eat as many as I wanted, as long as I ate them alone or dipped them in something "legal." Of course, back in the day when we were entering chili cookoffs, we took the fat from the roasts and friend them ourselves--even more gross for those who don't like them! 8-) Linda C

The "Minchies" sounds like a keeper...filling and yummy and legal! Thanks for sharing.

KAYSHOGG - That's my kind of meal: easy! I find that soup is often better the next day no matter what the soup. Before I was diagnosed, that's what I'd TOO often make for dinner: soup and sandwiches. I don't know if I could stand having soup without veggies in it now though ...
(pork rinds - can't wrap my head around those, but my hubby loved them when he did Atkins years ago).

When I'm trying to avoid other things, and can't resist, I go with pork rinds--not a great choice, but at least no wheat and stuff! Linda C

I use the soup mix for a old scottish recipe my family likes. It's a simple meat, potatoes, onions, boiled. My grandfather Marlow MacPherson Wilson, used to add the soup mix to spice it up. It's called 'Minchies' and is a meal stretcher for these lean times. Three or four potatoes, chopped into 1/4" cubes (MINCED),1 lb. ground beef or any meat ground fine (Tofu too for vegetarians) and and one large fine chopped onion. Add spices, salt, pepper, garlic, etc. to your taste. Boil at least one hour. Enjoy. It's even good the next day.

Oh, yeah! Let's hear it for potato chips! I love 'em too. Actually, the sodium content was the main reason I gave up the dip mix, salad dressing mixes, etc. I wasn't sure about the gluten content, but figured since I couldn't handle the sodium, why bother anyway? But I'm really glad to know they're legal, just in case!

Hmm, I have Lipton Onion Soup mix in my past without problems ... gluten problems, that is (I must have called long ago). The last time I had it was April 9th at 3pm when I had my last potato chip - not that I'm counting (jk)!!
I can tell you it's loaded with sodium and my ankles swell if I don't exercise and drink a lot of water though.
When I called the company, I'd only asked about the onion flavor because I wanted the dip; didn't know about the labeling. OOI (kinda like Rachel Ray's EVOO? ha), your recipe sounds good!
...rats. I've talked about it long enough I want potato chips again. I need to go to Potato Chips Anonymous meetings ... lol.

I confess to missing the onion soup dip mix, but have learned to approximate it with a blend of chopped onions, GF garlic powder, crushed dill weed, parsley, cracked black pepper, the tiniest bit of salt, and a pinch of crushed thyme in GF sour cream. I can't give exact proportions, since I just mix until it tastes "right!" Letting it sit in the fridge for several hours until the flavors meld helps.

I'm noticing that some of the packaging now says contains "gluten" along with the caveat for nuts, soy, etc. That'll sure help dummies like me. Thanks for the tip on Lipton soups; I'd never have guessed that one. Linda C

That's great, but is there MSG in it? Also, I think there is a Federal Law in place that all packaging has to state if it contains gluten or not by 2009. Not sure what the proper verbiage will be, but they are suppose to let us know, and as far as I am concern I don't care how they word it, just so that I understand it.

I called the customer service people at Lipton Soup And Dip Recipe. I asked about the mysterious natural flavors and was told there was NO gluten in the Mix. And all Lipton soups will have gluten or gluten free on their packages from now on. Hooray!
