Navygirl - I don't have cloth diapers, way past that stage in life. But I do use them on everything else, even towels. I have had no issue with them repelling water, absolutely no issue on anything. I have been using them for over a year now too. I love them!
If any of you live in Florida, you can buy the Florida Soap Nut tree. They are really hard to find, (don't know why they are a Florida Native), but my Husband and I just bought 2 at a nursery called Green Images in Christmas, FL. Be careful of nurseries that charge $125 or more to get them. We got ours for $5 per 1.5 gallon containers, the 3 gallon container was $12. We are told they grow quickly, live in drought conditions, don't mind sand and brackish water.

Has anyone been using this soap nuts a year later?
I went further into the woman's website, and she stated that they don't work for cloth diapers. She sent them back for a refund because not being water repelling is a necessary quality for her clothes to have...at least the diapers (and that was the majority of her laundry). Diapers that repel rather than absorb water are bad news and only create more laundry.
She does say that the soap nuts are definitely worth a try for families without cloth diapers. I also would have to say that if they leave a residue that repels water, I wouldn't use them on towels either. I prefer to dry off, not just wipe water around after my shower.
I went to NaturOil website and bought them (cheaper on their website then eBay). I bought a small 8oz size (80 loads). I think they are doing a great job. The only thing is I still have to use a dryer sheet for static cling, I tried it the first time in the dryer without a dryer sheet and all my clothes were very soft, but clingy. I put 4 nuts in a bag (they supply you with the little bag) and use those same nuts 4 times. I may have been able to do one additional load but wasn't sure how much they can break down till they are no good. I will have to check into that. Anyways, I would recommend the nuts. I am going to keep track of how many loads I actually do with them all. Oh yes, I have a HE washing machine if that information is needed in your decision on buying them.
