I have other issues besides AS. I have PsA, TMJ problems, and a non-repairable ankle (torn apart ligament). I LOVE to garden. It is my peaceful place. It keeps me centered and happy.

Last year, when I was officially diagnosed after a few years of pain, I felt really depressed and was kind of hiding I guess behind the fact that I had this disease. Then, one of my cousins whom I cared about very much, was diagnosed with lymphoma (cancer). He died 4 months later at 38 years-old leaving behind two children and a wife. That was a big eye opening for me. I started from that point on to feel lucky about my situation. It could have been so much worst. I am now thankful every day that I get by (good and worst) that I can still live my life to the fullest.

BAMAMOM00, you made some really good points. Staying positive really helps us. We need to try to keep that attitude and we will find that it helps us in all things. Sometimes we do slump into a woo is me attitude but that is a great thing about this site is there are others that will help us to get out of it by encouraging us. I have made some really good friends on this site. I probably never will meet them but we look forward to messaging each other and hearing from them. It helps to keep us positive.

I try to wake up each morning with an attitide that I have another day to live and I will make the best of it.

When you find out you have such a terrible disease it is very easy to feel sorry for yourself. I think I was in shock last year when I was told what I had, especially after I read about it on the Internet! After that I thought about all the afflictions that people have that are so much worse than mine. I decided to do my best at what I have to work with, and I am feeling so much better. A person on this team told me that this arthritis is affected by your attitude. I really believe that now! You can sit around all day and feel sorry for yourself, or you can get out and move, and try to help someone else, and you'll begin to feel so much better. I appreciate the members of this team because each person who replied to me added something I needed, and I have done so much better than I was doing at that time. I still have some pain and stiffness, but not as much as I had in the beginning, and I am able to work everyday, and enjoy my family. Yes, I get tired quickly and have to "take it easy" sometimes, but the majority of days, I act like a normal person, and when I act like a normal person, I feel like a normal person. Most people do not know I have arthritis, much less AS, unless I tell them. That is such a blessing! Thank you Half2Eat, and all of the other members for caring about me enough to help me with your encouragement and positive attitude! I mentioned to my doctor that I had found an Internet Site with others who have AS. He told me to be careful, because sometimes those sites are nothing but a "Woe is me" and a "whine" site. I told him this one is different, and I really enjoy my time on it. He was impressed. I wish I had more time on Spark People, because my computer doesn't work at home right now, and the only time I have online is a few minutes a day that I can use when I don't have something going on at work. Maybe soon, we'll be able to get my computer to working properly and I'll be able to encourage more people, too!

So glad we could be of help. Just remember, don't let this disease get you down. We can keep going through it and we can follow happy, healthy, and active lives. I have been living with this for almost 30 years now and I have never let it stop me from trying new things and facing life. The pain can be tolerated and lessened with meds and exercise. Good friends who understand help as much. Keep checking in when you need support, and even when you don't. We need your support as well. Hang in there, we are here when you need us.

I have not been coming on and spending enough time with all of you. Not as much as I should. I can tell too. When I can spend time on here talking with you it makes me feel so much better. I used to sulk because I was the only one in my family with such a rare and painful disorder. Of course, out of all of us it was me! Now I am grateful. Grateful to be surrounded by all of you. This has truly challenged me but I am such a better person for it. I now know what is important in life. Thanks team! emoticon emoticon emoticon
