Squee, I really love Hoopnotica's DVDs. I have them all. Other than that Betty Hoops has a few DVDs which are meh. I ordered the Jane Fonda one which I should get tomorrow. I have the Marisa Tomei one which is meh. There are a few more but most hoop DVDs are trick related. I have gotten Cristabel's DVDs yet at all.

I would recommend hoop mommas on etsy. You can find great deals on etsy. I recommend most beginners start with 42" (or larger) 160 PSI

I'm now a Hoopnotica instructor along with BodyHoops certified. Just google hoopnotica or BodyHoops certifications and you should get the link for it. I did my hoopnotica cert in person and it was amazing.

Thanks for the feedback, SQUEE. I am going to get one. I have been looking and they are more expensive than I expected and there are many options. I've done a little research into the right size etc. I'm looking for one that's smooth on the inside (no waves, balls, knobs, etc). I was hoping to be able to pick one up, but the brick-and-mortar sports stores by me don't have much variety, so I will probably order on-line.

You should definitely get one Aalley2! They're great fun! Good to see this thread up and running again :) Pamsparks - give the weighted hoop a go. I can't say i've used a non weighted hula hoop since I was a kid, but I would have thought if anything the weighted hoop would be easier to use, as the children's hoop is so light it would come back round quicker. You will get used to the weighted hoop - it can leave you with a sore middle when you're first learning, so do take it easy at first. And also make sure you teach yourself to hoop in both directions once you've got the hang of it! You definitely notice the difference in your stomach hula hooping :) I've been pretty lazy with my hooping for a while and only recently picked it back up again but so glad I did! Currently working on improving hooping in the opposite direction and would love to learn more "tricks"!

I know this thread has been dormant a while, but it's been such as interesting read and I have a question...I've used a regular hula hoop (no weights) and really enjoyed it, but stopped due to unrelated hip injury. I've recently started using it again and so far so good...any thoughts on stepping it up to a weighted one? It sounds fun and challenging! I could use a little of both.

Wow, well done Daimere!! Very impressive video too! I'm certainly not anywhere near that level but still have loads of fun with my hoop! It's a great form of exercising, doesn't have that same chore factor at all!!

Do any of you use home DVDs to learn new things? At the moment I have the Heart Hulaerobics DVD but its a little basic. Hooping's not really very big around here but I would love to be able to do more with the hoop. I was looking at Christabel Zamor's Hoop Dance Workout but see Hoopnotica gets very high praise. Are there any DVDs you'd particularly recommend? :)

I never could hula hoop before last year. I made a hula hoop out of 160 PSI 3/4" irragation tubing from Lowes. Hooping has changed my life. My hoops are larger than most due to my girth. Most people should start with a hoop between waist and chest level. Most my other hoops are above my chest but that's okay! I'm even a certified BodyHoops instructor now! If you make a hoop with 160 PSI tubing, there is no need to make it more weighted with water.

I adore the idea! A group in Houston, Texas does hula hooping each Sunday in a downtown park. Their hoops are made by them complete with all the glittery hula hoop tape and things! They're beautiful. BUT.. I have made several hula hoops. I've tried and tried to make the hula hoop go around my body more than 2-3 times. It always drops to the ground. Are there certain body types that just can NOT hula hoop or should I keep trying? :P

I've started up weighted hooping again too! It's pretty awesome except for the fact that I've got to get over my waist bruising. I can easily do it for an hour if I'm watching a movie. If I'm just in normal rotation around my waist, do you still burn as many calories as the calculators say? I find that my heart rate doesn't get really high when I'm just hooping normal. By the way, I use a 4 lb hoop that I made. Yeah, they're pretty easy to make, I might make a 6 lb hoop when I get used to doing to 4 again.

I had a weighted hula hoop a few years ago and it was the first time I was actually able to keep a hula hoop up in my life! I had actually gotten it from a friend for free because she didn't want it anymore, and it was really fun and made me exercise easily. Weighted hula hoops rock, thanks for the link emoticon

I absolutely love hula hooping, it is an excellent form of exercise as well as a great stress reliever!! i have learned many tricks with the hula hoop and have incorporated waist hooping into hoop dance! I make my own adult size hula hoops out of PVC tubing, it is rather simple however if you do not want to go through the trouble of buying all the materials needed I also sell them. Happy hooping to everyone!

I must tell you I could not hoola hoop as a child.

I bought a hoola hoop a year ago and told myself I'm going to try this again.

Well, much to my amazement and determination I can hoola hoop for a little bit. It still falls down but I pick it up and keep on.

Scrolled down quite farm to find more about weighted hula hoops but gave up. I'll just have to research it.

I'm 66 and have been using my hoop off and on for 6 years now. Yes you can learn to hoop but if you use a weighted one you need to read up on them because like anything else you can possibly hurt yourself. I could never hula hoop as a kid and I still can not keep a regular hoop up but I have no problem with the weighted hoop.

It's easy and fun to make your own hoops too. Here's one YouTube link on how to do it. If you search YouTube you'll find many more videos if this one isn't clear enough for you.

My daughter and I made a whole bunch of these. We like the padded hoops with a bit of water in it for weight. Sand and seeds tend to get a bit stuck going through the coupling and it throws things off a bit. I have a HUGE hoop. I'm about 6' tall and my hoop is chest high. It's super easy to use.

Have fun! emoticon

It was in the toy section near the bikes, I grabbed the largest one- don't get the one with the beads- make sure it has water in it. I am going to Dicks Sporting Goods to see what they have but for $5 it works really well for me now.

I bought mine in a local store after seeing it in Curves. The web site address is:

I learned to use my weighted hoop because my Curves had them at the time. My Curves does not have them for use any longer because it is not a Curves piece of equipment, so all Curves may or may not have them. I still cannot keep the regular light weight hoop up but I can hoop either way, turn around and walk with my weighted hoops. I have two, a 4 pound and a 7 pound.

thanks for your thoughts and suggestions. I figured I probably needed to try the weighted ones - especially since I am not too coordinated either. Just hopeful that someone would say the cheaper ones were ok to try! I have four children and would love to be able to hoop with them.

Anyway, I will look into local gyms to get a test run in - really don't want to purchase something that will just be gathering dust.

Just speaking as an old, uncoordinated guy. I think that an unweighted one would be hard to learn with. A better option might be to take tours of local fitness centers and ask if they have a weighted one that you could try. It only took me a few tries at the gym until I could do it, and I could never do a regular hoop, but I haven't convinced any one else to even try, LOL. Like you, there are more important things that I want for my home "gym," so I haven't purchased one yet. --Sam

Quick question - I can see that the weighted hoops would be a better choice for adult hooping. But - I don't want to invest unless I know that I can learn how!

I have seen a larger diameter plastic hoop - similar to the children's one in local store.

Diameter comes to my above my belly button - would something like this be adequate to start learning?

Hey Trigramps & everyone,

I'm so glad you got on board with the WW HH; I love it. Here's a trick, when you are hooping, slowly turn around to a 360 degree turn.

You should be able to hoop right or left. I'm only able to hoop right. I'll get there. It's a def work out, it you speed it up, you are working the bod and heart!

Just for any guys reading this. The weighted hula hoops are great, even for guys. It took me some hard work and time to get it to stay up, but it really works the abs and it's fun to do. I'm to the point now that I can speed up the rotations and get a real workout, or slow it back down and rest. It helps to have some aerobic music playing.

This is actually an exercise hoop and I lost 3 inches in my waist when I started using it.

All,

Just type in Hoola hoop, you will get plenty of URLs (Internet places) to look things up and check prices.

Good Luck.

Energized4life,
Fantastic, maybe with the weighted hoop I can get back into the groove of hooping again. emoticon I know I sure did enjoy it when I was a kid but I can't keep the regular one up either.

Yea MitchieJack, start out slowly, when you can build up to more than 1 or 2 minutes, then try walking around in a complete circle while hooping.

It's too cool.

Congrats, keep it up.

I bought a weighted hula hoop yesterday after reading this string. Boy...it was a heck of a lot easier when I was a kid. The thing kept dropping like a rock. I was so thrilled when all of a sudden I did it...just like that. Very fun!!

I am really interested in this. When I was a kid I hula hooped all of the time, but of course that has been about 40 years ago. I have tried recently to do it again and I can't keep it going? I never knew that you had to get it to fit either! I've never had a weighted hula hoop either. I look forward to seeing more information and updates on this

Is the company I got my hoop from. You might want to ask is there is a store near you that sells them. I actually bought mine at a local store.

I was so excited to find this fun team and see the topic "weighted hula hoop". I have never heard of such a thing and could relate to the person who posted earlier saying she had been embarrassed in the past to admit to people that she uses her hula hoop. I've had one my whole life (bought it at a grocery store I think) and I love using it. I had no idea you were supposed to get hoops that fit your body and some of them were weighted and some were for dancing. This opens up a whole new, fun fitness world for me. I'm so excited. No more secret hooping in my family room! I'm getting a weighted hoop tomorrow!

The next time I get a SP coupon for a trial at Curves I will go try out the hoops.

Am wondering if weights and a grip tape can be added to the 'toy' hoop I have that is about from the floor to the belly button. Which is the correct size someone told me is important.

Thanks again Ladies!!

Check your Curves out to be sure they have the hula hoop. Some Curves do allow them to be used. Mine stopped letting us use the hoops about 3 years ago.

Please learn to use your hoop, I just shoveled 28" of snow yesterday. I do not ache like normal because I used the hoop; my back does not hurt, my arms are a tad sore but shoot for a 64-year old broad...that's fantastic.

Well, thank you Ladies! I am finding there is still lots to learn in life!!! The plastic kids hoop I purchased last fall comes just an inch short of reaching the belly button! :)

I will look at the sites, I did copy them down. I could copy off one of those Curves' coupons and go try out the hula hoops!

Thanks again for the information and encouragement!

The hoop I use is more of a sports hoop and is ribbed inside. As a child growing up I could never do a hula hoop, I still cannot do the regular hula hoop.

I saw the hoop at my Curves over 5 years ago and bought one after practicing at Curves and knowing I could do it. The weighted hoops are not for everyone, before I would go out and buy a hoop I would borrow one to see if you can learn to do it.

Other people have told me they bruise from the weighted ones and a couple of my friends cannot use them because they have bad backs. I also know a couple of people that just cannot keep it up no matter what they do.

You need to start out slow and work your way up in minutes. I do 10 minutes twice a day and I can do the hoop in both directions. I actually lost 3 inches in my waist the first month I started using my weighted hoop.

The website I posted in my blog about hula hoops has lots of information on the hoop.

I am going to check out the Hula Hoop team and Rachel's blog.

I went to a Champions on Ice Show and one of the skaters did a number with numerous hoops. She was great.

Oh, do not use a children's hula hoop. They aren't meant for adults and that is why you are having a difficult time keeping it up. They make adult size hoops and trust me, you WILL be able to hoop with it. I have taught different age groups and body types to hoop. Anyone can do it. It is such a fun form of exercise! I've not used a weighted hoop, but I use what is called a "dance" hoop. Adults should use a hoop that comes up to their belly button, so about 40 to 42 inches in diameter, and weigh about 1 lb. You can even make your own. The hoop should have some weight to it and be large because (1) the larger the diameter the less you have to work to keep it rotating (2) some weight helps keep it more smooth rotating around you. Check out the SP team Hula Hoop!!! and we have a supportive team to help you get started; learn which kind of hoops to buy; and other great resources. I think I should still have a blog from a news clip I did describing how to waist hoop.

So I will have to try it again! I will also look into buying or making a weighted one~~

This is so cool. I've never heard of hula hooping for your health before. I love the idea. That might be a way to get through the long cold winter days when I can't go outside.

The most important lesson I've learned from Spark People is:

If at first you don't succeed reassess your motivation adjust your goals and try try again.

Someone asked how to calculate the calories for doing the hula hoop. According to a web site I read, one minute of doing the hula hoop equals running an 8 minute mile. So for my weight according to Spark People would be 12 cal/min. When I do my hula hoop I go to the 8 minute mile and put my time in and see how many calories it gives me then I put it in under my hula hoop exercise. Hope this helps who ever asked the question.

I have used the weighted hula hoop for almost 5 years now. I first saw them at my Curves. I have a 4 pound and a 7 pound hoop. When I first started using it I started slow and worked my way up to 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the evening and lost 3 inches in my waist.

This is another website you can check the hoop out:

http://www.sports-hoop.com/

I bought my hoop at a local store already assembled.

I really love doing the hula hoop but it is not for everyone.

I've never even heard of the weighted hoops! Now I'm going to add that to my wish list, too. I also want a Wii sooooo badly! I saw on Ellen the other day that Marissa Tormei was talking about she hula hoops to keep in shape. And she looks great! So I had already been thinking about getting a regular one. Now I think I'll hold out for the weighted one. Thanks so much for sharing the info!

I was actually a great hula hooper when I was kid. And jumped rope all the time. Sometimes I wonder why we ever gave up those fun, childhood activities that would help keep us in great shape today!

well, dancing hoops usually only weight a pound or two, so you can go longer amounts of time with it. I haven't tried one that is more than that though.

Weighted Hula Hoops are good, but WARNING - believe me, you cannot do more than 1 minute or less at first, it does consists of curving PVC tubing that "shall I say irritate? - you can bet you mid is sore; but you do get used to it, SLOWLY is key here. My mid was sore but I kept at it.

hooping.org or youtube.com have a guide on how to make them. I think it is a psi pipe, or something like that which you can buy at the hardware store. I haven't priced the stuff yet. And I think you can even get the tape at a hardware store or order online (for better color choices). the tape is for decoration and it does help with "sticking" to you better.
Also, another tip is it matters on the clothes you wear. Natural fibers is going to help the hoop to stick to you versas polyster, rayon, and other manmade fabrics will make the hoop slide or fall off more easily. I didn't know that at first.

I love this post about the hula hoop. I cannot afford the weighted ones right now but it is funny because I did buy a hula hoop (regular) from a store here and I do plan on using it into my non-gym days workouts.

Have fun everyone!

There is even a spark team for Hula Hooping. The custom adult hula hoops (weighed hoops, whatever you want to call them) are definitely better than the children's plastic hula hoops.

You can check out www.hooping.org for information on hula hooping, to find if a local group or classes are in your area, instruction videos, etc.

I just started hooping maybe a month ago and I'm having a blast. I'm learning "tricks" to dance with the hoop. My mid-section is definitely getting more toned. No one in my area is doing it, as far as I can tell, so I have just been teaching myself by watching videos online.

If anyone is going to the SparkPeople Convention next month and interested in giving it a try, let me know. And I will bring mine with me. I ordered my hoop from a friend in CA and she sent me 2 hoops. So I have an extra one someone (or more people) can try out. I would not mind at all to show the few things I have learned to anyone. Besides, it would be fun to have someone to finally hoop with me!

I go to curves and tried the weighted hula hoops and can not keep it up. Wish I could as know it would be good for me. Lots of the others there can do it with no problem

Thanks for sharing this link. I've been thinking about buying a hula hoop and I think this would be great. Also I think I'm getting a wii for Christmas so it's good to know you can use it with that too.

I've tried the weighted hula hoop and I like it and I'm thinking about investing in one. To the person who wanted tips, don't swing and sway like some people do and it falls to the floor, just gentle movement of the hips and it stays up. I know someone who lost 3 inches of her waist, what an incentive.

Oh yea, I love it on the Wii. I think a weighted hoop would be such a great workout. I'll be sure to share once I get it and play with it. Should be FUN!

My neice actually teaches a hula hoop class in the Dallas area. I have wanted one of these for awhile. Hopefully I'll see one for my birthday. Thanks for sharing the site.

You may have seen them at Curves
Even though I can't keep the regular Hula Hoop up I can keep my 4lb. hoop up for at least 100 reps.
