At my gym they describe it as a "perfect blend of dance and step-aerobics". You combine different styles such salsa, mambo, cha cha and put them together in a choreography. Instead of dancing only on the floor, you are using step to increase difficulty. You also add regular step-elements, if you know what I mean. Basic, knee etc. You can probably find better description on internet. :)
I went last night to a Contra Dance which is like the dance on Road to Avonlea. They have dances like the Virginia Reel. It was my first time, my kids took me, and I loved it. It wasn't really hard workout but it was good for me. All the other dancers there were so helpful and taught me a lot. You just get in your group, listen to what the caller says, and rely on your partner to help you learn. It was great fun!!

I went to a step dance class at the gym i used to live across the street from. Once you learn the steps it's awesome!! But a bit intimidating the first day you walk in - I walked in and they were at the end of one of their projects, so I had no idea what they were doing and couldn't keep up :(
Today I went to the gym for my very first Step Dance classes. It was awsome!!!!!! Very difficult in the beginning, but fun afterwards, when I leaned all steps. I used to go to step classes, but never to Step Dance. It is a great combination of intensive workout and FUN:)))))) TRy it!
