HungryWoman, I have a Crunch Pick Your Sport Pilates DVD, that I like... it's relaxing (not up beat), but boy does it do the trick. I went out and bought an elliptical a few years ago for the winters when I can't work out outside (or should I say, choose not to work out outside). I used to do that while watching tv... the time flew by! Take a look on Craig's List and see if you can find a used one inexpensively instead of buying new. I now go to the gym on rainy days & find everyone there to be so inspiring!

I, too, am a walker. However, when I am not able to get out and do it I would like something motivating.
Lately, I have been in the depressive cycle which prevents me from doing what I need most. I am trying to break that.
I admire your energy, I get so scattered when I do my cleaning, if I attempted lunges I would focus on those instead of the task. emoticon

We live in a small town, so I walk to work and do all of my errands while walking. I also try to do squats or lunges while cleaning.

Hello everyone!
I am continuing to look for indoor exercises. I am hearing good things about Leslie Sansa, but I see she has several offerings. I was wondering if anyone has used her videos, and what a good recommendation would be. I am basically a walker, and until recently would walk at least 4 miles daily. Not all that much, but met the goal of twice the calorie burn previously. Any input appreciated.

KARINHANSE, I would LOVE to go kayaking. My husband wanted one so bad, but has recently taking a liking to homebrewing beer... so for his birthday he will be getting a starter kit for that instead of a kayak. Anyway, I have been taking to the fresh outdoors for my daily run instead of running on the treadmill (on good days anyway). My tan is coming in nicely & the fresh breeze is much nicer than the stuffiness of the gym. Besides, I have a 5k to train for for the next month (and I'm no where ready for it). eek..

Great ideas! I have been getting in Kettlebell workouts at night while watching TV, even 15 minutes is equal to a circuit training workout.

Another thing I've added the past couple of weeks is going to the stairs & going up & down them a few times during the day. We only have 1 set of stairs going to the lower floor. So I'll go up & down about 4 times, 4-5 times a day. It really gets my heart pumping!

When I'm filing & have to put papers in the lower drawers of the filing cabinet @ work, I will do squats, just to squeeze in some extra calorie burning time.

I would print to the printer further away, however nobody keeps the pages in order over there (they like to shuffle & scramble things up), & it's super important that my pages stay in order... but, I still have to get up and walk to the printer often throughout my day even with the closer one, so it's not too bad!

Lorbayb, I've always had the same problems with waking up early to do cardio. What I've found works for me is not waking up early everyday, but scheduling my week & writing down gym days in my planner (which I try to go to the gym 5 days a week). Days that I KNOW I can't go after work, I will write in my gym time for the morning. It's much more tolerable to wake up once a week at 4:30am than it is to wake up every day at 4:30... Like anything else, start slowly. If you jump right into something, you're more likely to fail. You have to find a common ground with yourself.

Good luck! I hope it helps.

I try to wake up an hour early and alternate my exercises. Sometimes, if I work later in the day, I turn on the radio and dance around the house, it seems silly, but you really work your middle and get some fun cardio. Also after work, my co-workers come over and play DDR with me, we get competitive and have fun.

I am digging a new flower bed and putting in new sod. Digging and breaking up the dirt clods really works up a sweat plus it works arms, shoulders, abs, legs, just about every muscle in the body. Then, I carry the weeds and unwanted grass to the back and dump it on my compost pile. Definitely hard work but I enjoy it and will eventually enjoy the new yard and herb garden.

I'm trying to start a group running/jogging team after work. So after work on M, W, and F, we all run/jog around the capitol and through the parks downtown. It's really nice. Plus by the time, we are done and leaving, the rush hour traffic is basically over with. woo hoo!

I live on the top floor of my building and I have been carrying all of my groceries upstairs with me and to my apt without putting them down for a rest. My heart beats more than when I do hip hop abs! Also I carry my friends 3 year old (who weight 39 pounds) up the stairs as well (not with the groceries). LOL

I've never been one to consider cleaning as my daily workout, but i just scrubbed our shower & replaced the shower curtain (without taking the rod down) & boy am I pooped! Scrubbing sure does take a lot out of you and I could definitely feel it in my arms that I was doing something worth the while. Other than that, I've been going straight to the gym after work & running 4 miles. Tomorrow, I made plans with a friend to go play tennis (that's if this rain goes away by then).

I involve my kids--we weed, do bike riding, walk, and clean together. Since my hubby works long hours, I can't always have him take them for me to workout. Since I work strange hours (sometimes until midnight, sometimes START at midnight) I can't get up every morning and exercise. What I need to start doing is an exercise video at work when things aren't busy (I'm a dispatcher). My boss even showed me the place to stand where everyone won't see me in the window!

Did anyone say badminon? It's my favorite (although tennis is catchin' up). Badminton is inexpensive-we got our set for around $15, then all you need is a yard & a partner. Our family usually says we'll go out and play for a few minutes but ends up having tournaments and playing for hours!

It's not exactly cardio, but my husband and I joined a bowling league. It doesn't seem like it's much exercise until the next morning, when I can't move because I'm so sore. It's been a month now, and it's not quite as bad. But it has helped change the mindset from sitting on the couch watching tv to actually doing things that require some movement.

Got some good cardio cleaning the house yesterday. I cleaned out one of the basement rooms to make it a work out room there was soooo much stuff and up and down the stairs then went out to the garage and got my grand daughters new day bed and carried it up stairs. I had no idea that the bed springs for those could be so heavy ( at least to me) so yeah I was panting like a lizard.

I recently did a 5 k run - and although I didn't manage to run all of it, I did it in 42 minutes.

So now, inspired by my weight loss so far, I am signing up for a 10k run in November. I started the training last Thursday, about 25-30 minutes, 4 times a week. It seems to be paying off
I also walk to the shop at lunchtime, the long way round.

I ride my bike to and from work. That gives me a guaranteed 40 minutes of cardio per day!

We have had a lot of rain where I live lately, so this evening I mowed the lawn. Now that is extreme cardio (especially when the lawn has grown thick).

I like to run up and down the stairs of our house when doing chores, cleaning up, getting my son's diaper bag ready for the next day. I sprint up the steps and jog back down I try to do either 30 minutes straight or fit it in throughout an afternoon if I am doing chores.

My youngest daughter and I have been battling back and forth about the scooter the Easter Bunny gave her at Easter. The Bunny's intention was to give it to her so her and Mama could walk together. She refused to do it for so long, then yesterday she wanted to and I had to do other things. Today? We did it together! She got tired and so I started at 35 minutes, then after a rest at home she said she wanted to go again. This time we incorporated it with time at the playground at a local church and then continued on with the walk. All told we did 75 minutes tonight!

I decided to walk on my lunch break today instead of sit in the park and read my book (it was a beautiful day out and I had a lot of stress to blow off). I did a brisk walk for 30 minutes (probably 2 miles). After work I went to the gym to do my strength training & did a 25 minute run on the treadmill and 18 minutes on the elliptical. That gave me 73 minutes of cardio in one day!!! I've realized that breaking up your cardio throughout the day really makes it add up... QUICK!!!

A pedometer is a great motivator. Saturdays are hard for me to get conventional exercise in. This morning I put my pedometer on a cleaned house from top to bottom. I registered around 6,400 steps after 3 hours. Then I walked until it registered 10,000.

You're right about the pedometer. I find when I wear my pedometer, I make a point to get up from my desk as much as possible (whether it be to get something off of the printer after each print instead of letting them all pile up or to make a trip to the photo copier on the first floor instead of using the one on our floor). I get more excited about getting that number as high as possible and will do whatever I have to do get it there. Without it, I forget to move around as much.

I walk to and from work (2 miles each way), and walk to a farmer's market on Saturdays (2 1/2 miles each way). Plus I've got my bike going for the summer, so that will give me more 'cardio' opportunities.

I found the best way to get it in is to walk when you could drive. Walk to anything it is possible to walk to, if the store is close enough take a walk to pick things up. Walk to the post office, the bank, the cleaners. Where ever you can it makes you move. I just grab my MP3 player, listen to tunes and go. I walk home from work almost every day and that way I know I will get in some exercise (okay, this winter was a bear and as icy as it became walking was almost impossible!)

I've been wanting to look into a pool pass, too... I hear great things about water cardio. My biggest concern about swimming is getting water in my ears... I would have to get the wax to plug up my ears. I am prone to ear infections, and I never need another excuse to get one... :-\ In the same respect, I have to wonder if I would make good use of the pool because I spend so much time at the gym as it is... maybe if it's not too expensive I could take one of my cardio days from the gym and move it to the pool. It's an indoor pool, so it would be a year round option... I'll look into it a little further! Thanks for the reminder!

I keep saying it, but I'm gonna do it this year - I need to get a pool pass! Last I checked, it was only $5, and that's for the whole year. The deepwater lane pool is within walking distance from my house, and they have open lane swimming throughout the week. BF said he'd go with me (he swam competitively in HS), so what's stopping me?!

Swimming is the one type of cardio I dont' do, and I know how great is for you - and it's fun!!

It doesn't matter how slowly you go, only that you don't stop.

I try to go for a walk to down to the river over my lunch breaks and then walk the trail back to my office. Since its down a big hill I have lots of stairs to climb up and down and I take the stairs from my office on the 6th floor up and down when I can. Then I try to get to the gym on Tuesday, Thursday's and Saturdays or Sundays as my husband has evening classes Monday and Wednesday nights. So monday and wednesday nights after I put our daughter to bed I put in Fat Burning Yoga and do that for a 1/2 hour. That way I know I got some sort of exercise that day.

I was walking on my lunch breaks, but I came across this park that seems so perfect to sit in and read for an hour to just get away from everything. I would walk to it, but that would take my entire hour... so, I drive there and plop down and enjoy a good book. I save my workouts for the gym after work these days. Since I've started working in my office 5 years ago, they had put a small gym in the one space with a treadmill and an elliptical. The sad part is, in the past 4 years, neither have been serviced and they're beginning to show their age. The other difficult thing is that there isn't a shower in the building, so I wouldn't use the gym before work. I used to walk at a high incline & at a moderate pace on my lunch breaks in the gym during the winter. It's a great way to burn off some office frustrations! I wish I got a longer lunch so I could do both things that I really enjoy... but, I have more time to work out than I do to read, so I opt for the second option. :-)

That's a great idea, TRESSA!!

I've been trying to walk more on my lunchbreaks when I can (when I'm not working out on my lunchbreak!). Especially now that it's getting really nice out! I bring my Reeboks to walk in :) It's a nice break, and I feel good afterwards. I like to walk with a chatty coworkers of mine, and we just talk and catch up the whole way! :)

We have a small gym in the basement of the building I work in. I work on the third floor. Every morning my co-worker and I take our 20 minute break and go on the treadmills and at noon we go for 25 minutes. Plus we always take the stairs to and from the gym instead of the elevator. If I have time when I get home, I go on my home treadmill. But if I don't have the time, at least I know I've got in 45-50 minutes of cardio every workday.

ASWEDANCE, that reminds me of something I've never taken advantage of... I live near the Univ. of Cincinnati, and they have one of those fitness courses throughout the campus. I don't know how many miles it's spread out over, but there are different stations for pull ups, pushups, etc. with little signs instructing you. I'd like to try it sometime - jog from station to station! I need to find out where it starts and where exactly it goes though.. ;)

I'm hoping to get in a walk at lunchtime today since it's so gorgeous - I brought my Reeboks to do so! :)

I see free workout equipment all over the place in my town... but usually it's on the sidewalk and I wonder how long it's sat out in the rain for... I think I'm going to have to check Craig's List for a free/cheap treadmill... I have an elliptical, but I would love a treadmill at home.

My strength training workout recommends 60 seconds of cardio between every workout, but I have such a hard time in the gym going from weights to treadmill back to weights... everything's spread out too far apart. I bet it's so much easier to accomplish in a home gym.

I like to do circuits at home when I can't get to the gym (or when it's raining and I can't go outside, like yesterday!). I have an elliptical and a weight machine (both scavenged for free!) in the basement. I put on a movie (last night was Dirty Dancing!), and just alternate between a couple minutes on the elliptical and strength exercises (1 minute per exercise). It really gets the heart rate going, and since you're switching off and on so often, it goes by fast and is not boring at all!

One thing I've been trying to do more is use the bathroom upstairs. Instead of walking 20 feet to the bathroom on the first floor, I'm trying to sprint upstairs to the second floor!

If I absolutely, positively know that I will not have time to work out in my day I will wake up super early (4:30am) to get to the gym. However, I generally have a hard time doing that just for cardio. If it's a strength training day, I tend to be able to justify it more.

My elliptical is in my living room, so if I know there's a show I want to catch I will jump on that during my show. Or I will use my lunch break to go for a walk (although I prefer to use my break for reading and relaxing).

But, this is a very good topic. I'm interested to hear what others say because if I have evening plans on a weekday, I have a really hard time getting my cardio in unless I wake up early.

I usually run on my treadmill when my boys are napping or have gone to sleep at night. During the day, I take walks outside with my boys. I jump rope, wash dishes right after dinner, sweep instead of vacuum.

What do you do to squeeze in cardio? I Take single bags in from the car to the house for more walking. Also, I workout while watching TV. Jump Rope and running in place. What are some of your tricks to squeezing in Cardio?
