My first pick is being outdoors--walking, mowing the lawn with a push mower, gardening, etc. The next pick is tied between being inside at home and either exercise videos or working out on the exercise equipment I have at home.

I actually started to do quite a number of videos ... diabetic now, and have no time for both yoga and cardio ... now majoring in cardio dance ...

My yoga is still in the picture, still overwhelmingly @ home, self-sequenced ... but before I knew I was actually diabetic I knew something was off and started in with dance downloads from myyogaonline ...

As far as a gym ... NEVER since 2008; however, I have started to go back to a studio for dance exercise farily frequently, and a different studio for occasional vinyasa yoga ... much more for supervision than for guidance this time ....

Generally videos at home because you can do them in your own time and I don't have to worry about others witnessing my lack of coordination! Also outdoors though, I love walking all year round, and in the summer we tend to get a big group of friends together at the park and play sports and mess around with things like hula hooping, poi, frisbee and whatever random things everyone brings along which is great fun :)

I prefer anything outdoors that is fun and not considered a "work out". Like tennis, or hiking or mowing the lawn, scooping snow, gardening, stuff like that. I get so bored with just walking but am getting better about that one. I tend to get bored fairly easy which really hampers my workouts in general. I have a tendency towards ADD and have a challenge of staying in the moment if I am bored, but I am working on that.

I like different places for different things. I love doing dance video games and videos at home, walking, cycling, snowshoeing and swimming outside (I live in Michigan so all are possible depending on the time of year!) and I love the fitness classes and strength training equipment at the gym.

I'm new to this team and will jump right in!

I prefer scheduled classes (at the gym) because they keep me in a routine and I don't go too long without exercise. Walking outdoors is a very close second - but for me easier to let slide because it's not on my "schedule."

Not a big fan of video.

I do a combination of workout videos at home, going to the gym, and going outside. I live in WA state so it rains a lot right now. Any time we've had a nice day-I go outside and walk the neighborhood or the nearby park.
As soon as I have some extra money & it starts to stay nice outside, I will be buying me a new bike! :)

I have always found that I enjoy working out at home the most enjoyable/convenient, however... my downstairs neighbor has complained that it is too loud for the 2nd time. The first time I was using our treadmill, so I totally understand that, and I have stopped using it. But, today I was just doing a DVD, granted, there was some jumping going on. I am trying to talk with her to see if there is a time of day that she is usually not home so that if I am doing something high intensity, I am not bothering her. I guess we will see if we can reach an understanding...

Outside when the weather is nice. I've picked up biking again and I'm loving that! Once the weather turns cold I have to take it inside because I sound like I'm going to hack up a lung all day following any sort of vigorous work out. I did buy a pair of snow shoes though so I'll see how that goes. Otherwise I love my treadmill. I think I may need to find some ways to keep it fresh and fun this winter though...

I do all three. It would be hard for me to pick a favorite because I love walking outdoors especially when I have a buddy to walk with. But then I love my exercise videos and I have a lot of them. I like the gym too because of the treadmill and bike, but the gym I belong too doesn't have classes. It would be a tie between outdoors and video.

I mostly do indoor video/self-guided workouts, but I strongly prefer to be hiking, walking around the park, or something outside. My treadmill died just as I decided to start C25K training, so now I'm using the old cemetery near my house as a sort of track since its gorgeous weather and a very peaceful place.

The thing about the gym is, and you really have it spot-on: gyms don't motivate you.

Once you might get started, it is possible to work out harder, go faster or lift heavier weights, etc. than at home or outdoors on your own.

But gyms are made for natural self-starters.

And not just any self-starters, but the type who are not intimidated by the hard-bodies or sweet little young things around them ... (okay, I show that I am old enough to be their mother .... lol ... and I actually am)

The outside of the gym is the WORST: That's when you see the energetic kids streaming in. (Some people my age have already retired and are already in the gym ... with their personal trainers ... lol)

Some times I used to get there after work (before work is not an option because I can barely get up early enough), and even carrying (heavy) all my gear, and still just want to go home ...

Barring having a personal trainer (and I cannot afford one) in that gym, I don't come equipped with a "Start" button.

Besides, my workouts are really, really weird ...

I used to think I was partial to the gym based workouts, but that has long since changed. I think I will be staying away from a gym membership for a very long time now that I have my Insanity workout. Going to the gym is great as long as you have the motivation to break a good sweat. There were plenty of times when I would go to the gym and lack the motivation to workout. With my Insanity workouts, I have no choice but to go all out all the time. As long as I can continue to find home based workouts that involve some form of high intensity training, you will never catch me at a gym...ever.

The words "I can't" are like a cancerous disease...they eat at you until there is nothing left to consume. By saying "I can't" you are killing yourself before even giving yourself so much as a chance to live. I WILL push forward, I WILL dig deep, and I WILL succeed at achieving my goals. Thus, I WILL live on!

I like to use a combination of the gym and working out at home. I have found that I need variation in order to stick to it. When at the gym, I feel like I push myself harder because people are around me and I find myself trying to keep up with them. Which, surprisingly, I am able to when I try. And at home I use videos, my stationary recumbent bike, and the Wii Fit (usually for days when I know I need to get moving but really don't feel like it).

I'm a much bigger fan of working out to videos and at home. I've done a few of them and have since been expanding my collection of dumbbells and workout gear. TONS...OF...FUN. I always feel great when I buy a new piece of anything! Currently my friend got me into Jillian's 6 Weeks to a 6 Pack or something like that. Before that I've done Insanity, some P90x, other JM videos and I have a ton more on my computer!

Yeah, I'd said goodbye to the gym long ago ...
My bad feet don't take to the treadmill - and many other machines - without me limping in pain
But I can walk outdoors with no problem, depending on real-feel temperature (yeah, it's been one winter I wouldn't wish on a dog - unless he were bundled in DayGloⓇ fake fur ...)

My newest wrinkle - and an example of the most fun I've had working out at home is now the VIDEO MASH-UP (but (1) it could be done in a video-friendly gym as well, which I know does exist here and there), and (2) it probably works even better with aerobic dance

Here is an example - one of a few -

(97 minutes' duration):

Mostly Rodney Yee Yoga Burn dvd with tweakings by me plus stopped the dvd after his bunch of slow cobra flows, with my own routine mixed in: 4 short-form sun salute A vinyasa krama sequences, my yog-a-lates moves (ALL of them), then added in Camel with Jalandhara Bandha, Urdhva Dhanurasana, Viparita Karani Variation, Cow Face with Modified Virasana, half-headstand with both legs bent, both feet off the ground but not yet drawn in to the body did it twice for split- second ... then a little more of the dvd, went from cobblers' pose through all of his reclining hand to big toe sequences ...

then abandoned the dvd, and went into Plough, Shoulderstand and Savasana ...

All with the heater on full-blast. Candle and aromatherapy as well.

Look - it is more spiritual than the yoga classes I attend, on occasion (THESE days)
Because I make it so ...

And, yeah, also it's fun ...

i really like gyms. i used to belong to Planet Fitness (which was an AWESOME $10 A MONTH!) but I moved and joined Curves. While I do like Curves, I don't like the fact that it's 30 minutes and done. Sometimes I'd like to do the circuit 2 or 3 more times to really burn off some extra calories! And Curves doesn't have treadmills and ellipticals and all that, and I do like those machines. So it's a nice morning workout to get me going, but then I do Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred at night (well, SOME nights). emoticon

I had a gym membership last year and went about four times, lol! I really don't think it was a good fit for me, personally. I've gone to gyms in the past and never minded. More recently, I enjoy running outside and I also do DVD's at home, especially if the weather is yucky.

Definitely video at home. But I also love walking outdoors. Gyms are not exactly my cup of tea.

Hmmm...I like them all. I love running outside all year round. I also like doing DVDs in my basement for ST and step classes at my gym. Also started using the treadmill to get my runs in during the week.

Wow this is a tough one. I'm a stay at home military wife and mom. So I rely on my home workouts especially during the cold season when I can't take the kids outside for a long time. I supplement my home workouts with a trip to the gym every Saturday to get a really good intense cardio session. But when the weather is nice I am outside walking and running with the kids and I do weights at home twice a week. Sigh.. I can't wait till Spring. I'm all snowed out.

I walk lots... outdoors all year round, with some supplemented indoor walking in the winter. In warmer weather, I ride a bike a few miles a day.

The outdoors. I live in Fl so most of the time it's year round outside activity, although it has been unseasonably cold this winter!

I guess my main workout is the Wii fit and possibly walking around the neighborhood with my hubby. My all time favorite is to work in my gardens. It is a workout and a lot more interesting way to workout because it is outside in the sun.

Hmmmm....I like them all! If I could, though, I would forever stay outside having fun working out. As it is, I live in Chicago, and I just can't workout in the winter! So, the gym and videos are tied for the winter. Although, my aunt's gym in Ann Arbor, MI, is AMAZING. If I could go to that gym, then it would be #1.

LISREY, that sounds great. I saw the commercials for the Kinect and thought it looks like a lot of fun. Keep up the good workout! emoticon

My number one favorite is anything and everything outside. However, I live where it snows, so the gym is definitely a key part of my routine. I work with a trainer weekly and make sure to get in good strength training year 'round.

My Sweetie bought me an xBox Kinect for Christmas, so I'm now trying that out at home. I'm not much for exercise videos but I am competitive, so I hope the gaming aspect will motivate me. Time will tell!

Thanks for pointing that out AMPHIBI-YOGINI. I guess I really limited that option. Come to think of it I did do a lot of dancing around with my kids when I first started with SP. That was fun and motivating. I was desperate to just get moving, you know?
Thanks for sharing and hopefully others can look past that whole video limitation, lol. Have fun and enjoy much success!!!

Why isn't there a 4th option?

At home as you feel:

... no technology ...

(maybe music) emoticon

... maybe a little list emoticon

all the equipment you need ...

emoticon ,

or at most a stopwatch emoticon

[yup, I used to stretch using a stopwatch!]

I do hours of yoga at home and am not much into using any real-time guide (such as video or CD)...

That's my pick: at home ... ad lib ...

I do a lot of walking in doors and out. I also love my home gym. I have lots of DVD's, bike, band, balls and weights to use. I am not a gym person at all.

Personally, I did videos when I lost weight before (sidebar: I love JM workout videos!). Since this summer I've been doing a lot of walking, which I really like because of being outside in the neighborhood and with nature, yada, yada... And just recently my hubby and I got gym memberships. I'm gonna like that because it's something I can do with my honey :)

So I guess for me it's all three. How bout you?
