Another nice thing about the resistance bands is that they are relatively cheap. I think I got a set of 3 from Target for about $20 -$25. Individual bands are less. I also received some in various exercise dvds (included in the price for about $3.00 more than the price of the dvd by itself).

I would not use braces because they support the muscles and keep them from working as hard. I know how frustrating it is to not be able to use a set of muscles because of the pain. But I believe when it's that bad to lighten up the weights to something you can handle now, or try wrist weights after consulting a professional who knows how to work with RA.

I've had good luck with resistance bands not hurting as much and they are lighter than weights but still give a good workout.

I don't use braces while exercising, but have used them for deep resting afterwards. I do use weights designed for use while walking when I do dumbbell exercises. These have a band that goes over the back of my hand and helps stabilize my weak and uncertain grip, helping me keep good form and perform the exercise safely. They come in several weights but mine are light. I also use water resistance in the pool for strength exercise, which lets you build muscle while the water supports your joints at the same time. There are kits available for this (Amazon.com has one), I've seen others use these, but so far I use just my own body.

I do not have an answer for wrist but you may want to check out Chair Exercise group. It has really helped me.

Recently diagnosed - three weeks on MTX and waiting for that to kick in. My wrists are a big problem for me want to start back doing my strength training workout. Does anyone use wrist braces so you get more strength and less pain on your wrist. I really want to start back but don't want to damage anything. Thanks
