Hi all, still didnt eat too well today but I did two workouts and burned 600 calories :) so that should help out. I've been trying out the kettle work series. Does anyone else use kettlebells?

Lisa, don't worry, they will come off! So glad you had such a wonderful weekend!!!

Debbie, thanks for your blog, it was very moving to me!

Today I went to the podiatrist and I have arthritic bone spurs on the bones on top of my feet! That's why I've been having shooting pains when I walk sometimes. Oh well...I knew I had osteoarthritis in my back bone and hips, now my feet....oh well, at least I know what it is and that walking won't make it any worse! I absolutely LOVE to walk and I would be heartbroken if I have to give that up!

Hello All,

The last day of the holiday weekend and we have no scheduled plans...kinda nice. My son has baseball practice tonight.

Went to the grocery store and got lots of fruits and veggies. Plenty of chicken too. So today I will create our meal plan for the week.

Thanks for the concern & care for my neighbor! He's weak today, but was at his table eating a hamburger & fries from McDonald's with his family! He's home and he's happy. He does not know that he has 99% blockage though! They only told him he had some!

Kim & Lindsay, I'm struggling too! This South Beach diet does not limit quantities, but no breads/pasta/rice is off limits as well as fruits and all sugars or sugar making foods as Potatoes and corn. But I'm still sticking with it, even though it seems it's killing me...lol. Today is my Day 8th. Today I bought Romaine lettuce, reduced fat swiss cheese, Diet Peach Snapple, and I made Lettuce wraps with 97% fat free ham, swiss cheese and homemade cilantro mayo with lime and garlic, Absolutely delicious!!!

Lisa, so very glad that storm missed you!

Have a GREAT Sunday!!!

Hi Lindsay, I too am struggling with staying within my calorie range. I'm going to the grocery store today to stock up on healthy food and make a meal plan for the week. I'm hoping this helps. Keep pushing, I know you can do it.

Hi Ruth Ann, so sorry to read about your friend. I hope he is comfortable and will enjoy the time he has at home. I will pray for you and your friend.

Hi Kitten, happy to read that the weather missed your area. Hope you have a nice weekend and can enjoy some outdoor activities. We're busy with graduation parties, confirmation and baseball this weekend. We're supposed to get storms all weekend so I hope the weather-men are wrong and it misses our area.

Hi all! Hope your weekend started out on the right foot. Mine did not :( I have gained 1.5 lbs this week and just seem to be slipping. My workouts are going well but I can't seem to keep my eating in check. Im going to try and maintain this holiday weekend and then when I get the chance to grocery shop on Monday stock up on healthy foods again!!! Wish me luck :)

Well we survived the "weather", didnt even get a drop of rain on our side of the city it stayed out on the North end of town. They got alot of rain and wind but its just like any other severe thunderstorms we get here.

Ruth Ann , so sorry to hear about your good friend I hope and pray that when he does join his wife its peaceful and not full of pain. My thoughts are with you and him.

Hi Lindsay! I drove up to Buffalo and the angiogram showed 99% blockage, but because he's 89 yrs old they cannot operate to fix it. They did another test today on his electrical impulses and that's all fine, so they're sending him home. He may live a short time or he may live longer, but whenever he has another heart attack or it becomes 100% blocked, he won't survive it!!! My heart is torn. I love him dearly, like a father to me, but I know he wants to go!!!

Hi Peonies!!!! I hope all of you had a GREAT day today!!! Mine has been very busy. My neighbor didn't have the angioplasty done today as his coumadin (blood thinner) levels have to come down some more before they operate. They will do it first thing Friday morning. I'm going to go back to the Buffalo hospital early in the morning. If the angiogram comes back fine, that his arteries around his heart aren't blocked, then it's got to be electrical and they may put a pacemaker in...just have to see how this goes. Poor guy, he so HATES being in the hospital!!!

Have a great day tomorrow!!

Thanks, Lindsay!

Kitten, I hope you're not in Oklahoma!!! Take care and Stay SAFE!!!

Hi Peonies! this has been a wild day. Yesterday at 5pm my neighbor, across the street, collapsed and they rushed him to the hospital. He's 89, and he's like a second Dad to me!!! To make a long story short, they ran all sorts of tests and found out he had had a heart attack. Tonight they transported him to Buffalo, about a 2 hr drive from us, to have an angioplasty done tomorrow.

I ran to the local hospital last night and he looked rough, when I went today, he looked a little better, but lost some feeling in some of his fingers, toes ok, though. He didn't have a stroke, though!!! I think I might go to Buffalo tomorrow to be there with his family. I did a lot of laundry for him today so he'd have clean clothes and a clean bed when he gets out, if they let him come home to his house after this is all over. If the angioplasty doesn't work and they can't put stints in, he won't last long. That will be so very hard! I do know he's old, and he's ready to go. His dear wife of 65 yrs, passed 2 yrs ago and he wants to go to heaven and see her. He's a very sweet, kind, old guy who has been working ever since his dad died when he was only 14 yrs old. He still mows his own very large yard, but walking hurts as he's so hunched over with spinal stenosis.

So sorry I was so long winded tonight, but my heart is in Buffalo tonight and I just wanted to get this off my chest! He's a dear and I've been having lunch with him ever since his precious wife passed 2 yrs ago. She and I were very close and spent hours together while I was still homeschooling my boys when Mr Botens went into the hospital with cancer. He survived that and is in remission. Now this. But he is old and I know he won't be around much longer, but whenever he does go.....I will soooo miss him!!!! Thanks for letting me spill my heart out!!

Just checking in! Another good day! Thanks, Lindsay! I did good on staying in my calorie range, eating my freggies, doing great on my South Beach Diet, Day 4. and drinking my water too!

We're cleaning the church from stem to stern! It's looking beautiful for the BIG day! A couple in the church have been refinishing the dinning room downstairs at the church. The walls have all been done and it's gorgeous! Now they're working on the floor! We steam cleaned the sanctuary yesterday and did the walls and pews. Tomorrow we'll work on the Sunday School rooms. June 8th is only 2 weeks away!!!

Glad to hear that some of us are still doing well and hanging in there, we can do this together and we all will get there. I did a little physical activity today and only felt light headed once. I am so glad this week has the sleep points I have to "cheat" because I have to take sleep meds but I sleep at least 10 hours since the change last Tuesday. Its been one week since feeling so awful and today was a 180 degree turn around. I was actually able to put on some of my clothes and not feel squished in them, thank goodness. I also took my first 50,000 UI of Vitamin D and I think that is helping with some of my pain because I really have felt at a 4 to 5 since I took it on Thursday. Well I ought to get to bed Later Peonies

Hi you beautiful Peonies! I hope everyone had a great Sunday! I did! My 2nd day on my South Beach diet went well. My dd, dil and grandson came over today and spent a few hrs with us! Little Tyler is getting so big! He's 5 months old now!

Lindsay, because my blood sugar was a little high and I'm not diabetic. But diabetes runs in my family. My dear sister just passed last summer from complications from being on dialysis and heart disease. She was only 65. But my dr wanted me to work on my diet now and see if we can bring that number down and keep it down!!! I've already lost 3 lbs in two days!!!

Catch ya'll tomorrow! Have a good night! emoticon

Hello Peonies!!!
This is my "official" 1st day on the South Beach Diet. I always said I don't like cooked spinach, but I made this quiche that was simply divine!!

Vegetable Quiche Cups To-Go
3 eggs; 1 10oz Frozen box of chopped spinach, 1/4 cup diced bell pepper; 1/4 cup diced onion, salt and pepper. Thaw spinach in microwave for 2 1/2 minutes, drain excess water. Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Spray a 12-cup muffin pan with Olive Oil (or use foil muffin cups that you've sprayed with olive oil) Evenly divide the mixture in the 12 muffin cups, Bake at 350* F for 20-25 min. 1 serving = 2 muffin cups, 89 calories per serving.

My first day was good. I didn't starve, nor did I miss my sugar/starch. I use stevia for sweetener, if I need it.

Another good recipe for desert is Vanilla Ricotta Creme
1/2 cup low-fat Ricotta cheese
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1 packet of Stevia
Mix all together and enjoy!
Calories: 178 calories, 14 g protein

Kitten, I sure hope you're feeling better soon! Wow, 6 lbs in 6 days, that's a lot of weight. Be careful to take care of yourself!!!

Sheila, thanks for the points break! I updated my tracker!

Have a GREAT weekend!!!

Good morning Peonies, how is everyone doing?

Ruth Ann, you will have let us know how it goes these first few days on the South Beach, I know that many have great results with it.

Well, I am still "laid up". Everytime I try to get back into exercising I get extrememly exhausted like my muscles are really weak. I would have thought my muscles would be strong with me carrying all that water around for so long but I guess not. I have lost 6 lbs in 6 days which has made me feel a bit better. I got out on Thursday and Friday to WM and walked around a bit but other than that I havent done to much....oh I also did some mild weight strength exercises with 3 lb weights. I still get swelling when I stand but it does seem to go away faster than it has before. Also my pitting is not as bad.

Sheila, thats for being so understanding to those that were not able to get on earlier this week. I have been on SP since 2007 and its only happened 3 times that I can remember.

We (challenge leaders) know a lot of challenge participants log onto Spark in the evening after work and couldn't get on yesterday. That means they were unable to get the points for Wednesday's chat or for communications with other participants while those of us who can Spark in the morning could.

We have decided that everyone should give themselves the 50 points for Wednesday's chat and the 100 points for BSG interaction for Wednesday. We truly think it's the fair way to handle the problems we had with Spark being down.

Hi Peonies! Well, my dr put me on the South Beach Diet. So I went to the library and got the book, read it and tomorrow will be my first day! The first 2 weeks will be rough, as far as what I can and cannot have, but I've got the groceries for the first 4 days. My family will eat some of the stuff, but will still have snacks and some meals that I'm not eating. But it's ok. I'll just try to do my level best. My dr said my fasting bloodwork showed my sugar was a bit high. I'm not diabetic, but my mom was and so was my oldest, dear sister. She passed away from complications to dialysis last summer. I'll work very hard to bring those sugar numbers down!!!

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon to the Cala Lilies for a job well done!!!

Today I read an article about how to sneak in veggies and fruit. It seems I struggle with veggies. This was a good reminder for me.

Also read an article bout foods you should have on hand. It also was a good refresher course

Just read this in a blog and thought I'd pass it on.

Keep your streak - If you missed logging in yesterday due to the outage

You can go to:
www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/sparkpoints_sp
in_outage.asp

to receive login credit for 5/16/2013. If a person already has points for 5/16/2013, the page will tell you that you already have login points for the day.

If you do not, it will randomly pick a point value - similar to if a person does not have flash installed. So, there is no actual wheel spin and your streak will be updated.

I'm not going to do the team points count to find the winning team for the week until this evening due to Spark being down so long yesterday. Please give yourself the bonus points if you tried to log on in time and couldn't.
Please make sure I have your team total by at least 8 central time tonight (Friday).

Good evening.

My article today was about being optimistic. I learned that it does not mean I am gonna convince myself that I am gonna lose an extra pound this week. It does mean that no matter what gets in my way as I am moving Twd my goal, I will not be detered. I will keep on going

I am gonna start using little rewards. Not sure what yet

Hi Peonies!

I'm sorry Linda and Kitten have to back off for now, but I understand that sometimes you just have to!

I'm not sure of why you wouldn't want to reward yourself for losing weight. I do and have for a while now. I get myself a new pair of earrings every 5 lbs I lose and keep off! It really does give me incentive to lose and keep it off! I just earned myself a new pair and I LOVE them! I'm almost due a new necklace which when I reach 170 lbs, I'll earn!

My article for today is: De-Stress in 3 Minutes or Less, Stop Emotional Eating Before It Starts!!! www.sparkpeople.com/resource/wellnes

Minute 1: Stay Grounded
Minute 2: Reality Check:

i hope all the people that are taking time outs on the challenge are feeling better. prayers are with you.

i dont have a reward system in place but i am open to suggestions. i am gonna read that article. i know i read it before, but i didnt realize you were not supposed to reward yourself for losing weight. that makes sense.

things have been a little slow with me. i had a really hard day at work yesterday and it seams to have set me back.

Hi All, I read the article The Importance of Setting Medium-Term Goals. I have read things like this before & they say not to reward yourself for say "losing 10 pounds" but for things like "drank 8 glasses of water every day for 2 weeks" to help yourself stay consistent since you can't make yourself lose the 10 pounds but you are in control of drinking water. Does anyone have a reward system in place? i had created one a while back but haven't really implemented it yet...

Hi Peonies,
I read an article to stop feeling guilty about everything the article said this can be toxic and get you even more off course than just forgiving your mistakes and learning from them. I use to go down this path & now I am much happier that I don't beat myself up when I have a "bad" day. It's been working out a lot better for my sanity & the pounds are still coming off - even if it is slower than I would like. Hope you are all having a great Tuesday!!

Today's article is about how much water to drink. I always wondered how the 8 cup rule started.

Sorry I havent checked in for a few days. Its been hectic and I havent felt good at all (check out my blog if you wish). I am feeling a bit better but am on rest at least until after Wednesday and I talk with my DR again. I really hate laying with my feet up above my heart, not a comfortable position for me. I hope as today goes on I will feel even better.

The article I read tonight is "Stop Dieting and Start Living!" which is exactly why I started SP and this paragraph sums it up...

Making a lifestyle change involves an internal and permanent change in your relationship with food, eating, and physical activity. You recognize that the primary problem isn’t what you eat, or even how much you eat, but how and why you eat. Eating mindlessly and impulsively (without intention or awareness) and/or using food to manage your emotions and distract yourself from unpleasant thoughts—this is what really needs to change. Learning to take good care of yourself emotionally, physically, and spiritually—so that you don’t want to use eating to solve problems it really can’t—is a lifelong learning process that is constantly changing as your needs and circumstances change.

i read a great article on high impact excercise. it explained what i meant exactly. it means that both feet are off the ground even for a split second. it also help protect your bones to do high impact excercises,. however, not too much cause that can cause injury,. it is great ( at least for me) to combine high and low impact excercises. this help me as i am going thru the 30 day shred and i was concerned about it ijuring my knees,. i can do some excercises as high impact and some as low impact. she has someone in the video doing both.

another great article was about relaxation tecniques. smile as you are doing irrating things. this will help your attitidue.

The article I read today is "How a 'Bad Food' Attitude Can Backfire"

I like to journal and I do notice certain times of the day when my cravings are at their worst, I just haven't mindfully kept track so I can work on changing the pattern. So this paragraph from the article caught my attention.

"One of the best ways to get back in touch with your true cravings is to keep track of them. For a few days, keep a journal of the time of day, what you’re craving, and whether you’re at work, at home, on the road, with your kids, etc. You can still give in to temptation—this exercise will simply give you a clearer picture of how often you crave, what you crave and in what settings those cravings occur."

As I said earlier, I'm starting to want to incorporate Strength training into my exercise program. I think this is a fitting article for me to read and you may find it helpful too!!!

Why Strength Training is a Must for Everyone By Jen Mueller
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness
_a
rticles.asp?id=364

According to the article, ST does these:
1. Improves your ability to do everyday activities.
2. Improves your balance and stability.
3. Builds muscle strength.
4. Decreases your risk of osteoporosis
5. Reduces blood pressure
6. Reduces low back pain.

If you, like me have never had a consistent ST routine that you did every other day, here are some starters from this article:

1. Start by strength training 2 days/week, building up to 3 days/week. Have at least one day of rest in between each session;
2. Start with 2-3 exercises each for lower body and upper body and 1-2 core exercises.
3. Start with one set of each exercise (12-15 repetitions- slow and steady), using light hand weights.
4. As you add additional sets, rest 30 seconds to a minute in between each one.
5. Never hold your breath during the exercises. Always exhale when exerting force. (A trick I found in another article was to count out-loud when performing a lift, ex: "One & two & three--hold." You will inhale naturally while lowering. It's impossible to hold your breath while talking)
6. Always warm up before and stretch after each session.
7. Pay attention to proper form and technique.
8. When selecting a weight, it should be heavy enough that you feel the muscle working and the difficulty increasing as you get to the 15th repetition.
9. Strength training should never be painful.

I hope you found some of these points helpful! I really got a lot out of this!

Keep on sparking, Peonies! emoticon

Hello Peonies!!! I had an AWESOME day with my dd and her fiance! We went to Letchworth State Park and walked on beautiful trails, saw 3 breathtaking waterfalls and walked TONS of stairs and up and down hills! I definitely got all my cardio in today! Over 150 min of cardio!

For my article today, I'm going to focus on FOOD, as Kim did.

Some of the ones I liked best were:
Frozen Fruit Pops

Fresh Fruit Roll-Ups
Off the Beaten Path Trail Mix

Kim, emoticon for your son placing 4th and having the Best Personal Score at the meet!!! That's AWESOME!!! I liked your Breathing article. It's good to know I am breathing right! Thanks for sharing.

Kitten, Wow, that's pretty awesome going to your car and having $40 on the windshield! I bet that made your day! Wish you could post pics of your crochet projects you do. I bet they are beautiful!!!

Linda, that's good you love all those foods that can help with your depression. Sounds like it would be a good idea to see your Dr that you might have a thyroid problem!

Good morning Peonies...

Lisa, that is such a wonderful thing someone did leaving the envelope on your car, what a great surprise.

Linda, I think you should still count the points for your Mother's Day. Did you do anything special?

We have a busy day today...graduation parties, Cheerleading fundraiser and a baseball game fundraiser tonight.

My son's track team won the state districts qualifying meet. It was very exciting. My son participates in the long jump...he took 4th place, but had a personal best score! State competitors will be released today, so we're waiting to see if he qualified for the state competition.

So with all the activities this weekend, I read the perfect article...10 Tips to Keep from Overeating at a Party

I like all the tips and will definitely use them today.

hi peonies, I read an article about depression today, as I suffer a bit due to all the pain etc. I have mild pills I take occasionally. anyway the article lead me to a super food list it has all the foods I love it also suggests to drink green tea which I do anyway. but by the sound of it I might have a thyroid problem. I have stopped taking all those painkillers for about a week or so now and now I am thinking they might have being masking other problems. I will have to mention my symptoms to the doc.
as for this weeks blog I cannot do it because we celebrate mothers day back in march here in the UK

Good evening Peonies this will more than likely be my worst week on points, I can never seem to remember to do articles, after 5yrs on SP its hard to find new ones. Plus I just plain forget...lol. Today I did 3 MILES of WATP, I am sore! I also got out to WM with DH this evening for about another 45min. I have to say it was just awful stress wise there for some reason it was REALLY crowded and people just couldnt seem to drive. However we did get an awesome surprise when we went back to our car to find and envelope with $40 in it on the windshield in and envelope that said, "random act of kindness, keep calm and chive on". Someone sure was watching out for us this month! Other than that it has been a really quiet evening with me taking apart a crochet blanket that I made about 6 yrs ago, I plan on reusing the yarn to knit my DH a gambion , I know thats not how to spell it , its like a robe with sleeves that go to the elbow and very wide and is sometimes tied with a belt or two small ties. I got about 2/3rds done.

Kimmy, I dont breathe with my belly either, I just cant seem to figure it out.

Ruth-Ann I love your lists you have posted. And I am sure that you will fit into that dress in a month.

Linda I hope that everything goes smoothly for you this next two weeks.

Lisa, excuses can sure get in the way cant they

Oh I forgot to add, I have this weeks blog completed if you want to stop by

Tonight's article is How to Breathe During Exercise.

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness
_a
rticles.asp?id=1424

I've always struggled with this. I don't breath with my belly...I breath with my chest. It's strange that such an automatic thing needs to be trained to be done a different way. This article explains how you should breath during different types of workouts.

Wow, I actually did some strength training, instead of just talking about it!!! I did the Coach Nicole's 12-minute Seated Core workout! Really good for my core!

I've had a real good day today, more planning on my dd's upcoming wedding. Things are looking good! Two weeks ago, I bought a really pretty evening gown that was a little tight... But I've been working on being able to fit in it for her wedding. Well, it's only 30 days till the wedding and I've just GOT to fit in it!

So I'm going to up the ante and see if I can shed 3-4 lbs every week and then I know I'll be able to fit into it without it being too snug on me. I'm drinking lots of water and eating a ton of freggies.

If anyone can give me any tips, I'll gladly listen!!! I want to do this without sabotaging my health!

For my article today, I chose 20 Tips to Lose Weight for Your Wedding.
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutriti
on
_articles.asp?id=1545&page=3

I know none of us is getting married, but we all want to look our best and feel comfortable in our clothes! The points I will be majoring on are these:
1. Track Your Food.
4. Make Fitness a Priority.
5. Treat Your Workouts Like an Appointment.
6. Get Support. (that's where you guys come in!!!)
9. Catch Your Zzzzzz's. (I got to work on this one)

20. Use Spark People!!!! Yeah!!!

Hi Airinmath! So glad to have you join our team!

Lisa, is it the Spark Solution you just got? No, I don't but I've been thinking of getting it! Tell us how you like it!!! Sorry your Mahi Mahi didn't turn out better, it is a good tasting fish. Way to go on your 24K even when you're not feeling motivated! You Can Do This!!!

Lindsay, you can download it? Wow, that would be neat because I have a Kindle fire and I might get it if I can download it on my kindle! If I can, I might join you on Monday!!! (is it this upcoming Monday?) Thanks for your article. I read it also and #2 Starting Out Super Strong is one of my weaknesses! I get going too strong and then fizzle out!!

Kim, I loved your article too! I loved the point, Respect Your Limits! There is a lot of things I can't do and I have tried to do them and....yeah, it hurts. So I need to just do what I CAN do and not worry about what I physically can't do!

Kitten, so sorry to hear you had such a hard day! I'll read your blog tomorrow! (((Gentle Hugs)))

emoticon Peonies, catch ya'll tomorrow!
