Fiber idea - one I've found really tasty and quick for mornings usually; today had for lunch since i am still sick and wanted something hot and smooth for my sore throat. Quaker instant oatmeal HIGH FIBER kind- the flavor i selected was maple and brown sugar. It has 10 g of fiber in 1 serving... a little packet. I sometimes add in cinnamon (read somewhere about value of spices in one of the nutrition articles in Spark, but don't remember the exact one.) In any case, suggest for anyone having a hard time getting enough fiber to try it.

Pony, way to go keeping up activity while traveling. That's a tough one.

Hmmm... cardio or strength for typing? Maybe it depends on how fast you type? I think mine's definitely cardio, I'm moving my fingers so fast... maybe if I put some "finger weights" on the ends of my fingers, it could be strength, too... lol.

Didn't check in here the last couple of days, but I've been meeting the challenge. Saturday was a 12 mile run (just over 2 hours); Sunday was a 21 mile bike ride (90 min); and no cardio today, but I did do just over an hour of a fairly intense circuit-type strength workout. Got the fiber just into the range on Saturday and yesterday I topped it out since I finally got myself out to pick up a few groceries, including some whole wheat bread for sandwiches - yum, it's good to get the whole grains back into the diet.

I had to laugh when I saw Rosen's posting -- calories for typing. I'm going to see if that counts as cardio or strength emoticon

Meanwhile, though I haven't posted as much while traveling during past week, and past few days had worsening congestion and now laryngitis-- I still walked at least 10 min/day, usually more, and had my fiber. Today walked 30 min.

My only cardio today was typing... whoops. And the strength training got skipped in favor of a complete and absolute day off. On the bright side, I really just didn't have the appetite to overindulge too much on the "splurge night" and the calories are well in line.

On the downside, even with the extra veggies on the pizza, the fiber is a bit under target - and likely to stay there.

Tomorrow, a long and hilly run awaits!

Whatever combo works. I like yogurt w/fiber over cereal.

Congrats on getting out in the cold - brrrr! I agree that layering is the trick, though. I got out for a 28 mile bike ride yesterday - but not until past noon, so it was already almost 40 and went higher. Fiber was a bit low, but not by too much.

Today was chillier (29 at ride start) but I was meeting friends, sooooo...... Out I went. It was amazingly tolerable in layers. 30 miles. I'm already at my fiber minimum for the day and should go into the middle of the range before the night is through.....

I despair of running tomorrow (rain, rain, rain, wind, wind, wind), so that might be a strength workout day.

I did get out for a 4 mile run yesterday in 22 degree weather. It wasnt windy = and it wasnt bad. Im finally learning how to dress to run in differant kinds of weather. I was always overdressing for cold weather and then tying a zilliion things around my waist as i ran. Not good and not comfortable. Im getting smarter and learning more i guess.

Today is a non -run day unless I run later this afternoon............. its supposed to be in the upper 40's so I should make the time for it later.

Im still struggling with fiber and working on it. I also use Fiber One cereal and I like the regular and the flavored one. I mix it in fat free cottage cheese with mandarin oranges. Its a weird combo but its high in protein and I like it.

This is all really such a work in progress.

No cardio, though my hour of strength + abs had me working up a good sweat.

My fiber just sneaked into the "good" range and calories are on the low side of the range, so things are looking good for today!

Jazz, I can relate... I had second thoughts this AM looking out at the cold and drab day. But mid-30s really is a runnable temperature with proper layering. No, really! :) I got out around 1pm to run in just tights and two layers on top - the cold was good motivation to do the planned speed workout so the fast intervals would help me stay warm! I felt lucky it wasn't windy like Saturday. Did 6 miles in 57:30 for my cardio today.

Fiber is almost into the range and will be well into it after a snack in a bit. Also did better with some servings of veggie with my dinner & a V8 soup for lunch. Still need to do better with "on hand" fruits and veggies. If somebody would just prepare them for me....... I love a good salad, just not the preparation! :)

Other than that, took advantage of the holiday to, uhhh, work all day :D - but at my own pace and without any distractions of email, etc. from co-workers who are all off. And I've enjoyed it... chilling with my roommie/best friend/co-worker and geeking out...

Forgot to mention....................... Im thinking of making our March challenge into bite-size weekly mini challenges. I figure we can all do something for a week -------------- and maybe we will make some new good habits.

How does everyone feel about that kind of challenge? Lets hear it........... and Im open for suggestions.................... emoticon

looked out the window this morning after breakfast and thought - oh well.....another day i cant run because it snowed. well the streets are clear......... sure enough as Im sipping my coffee looking out the window ------------ this elderly runner in my neighborhood runs right past my house. Talk about feeling like a jerk. She is probably - 5 years older than me. She was a tremendous inspiration as I started running. I watched her run a little - then walk a little - then run again a little and walk again............. she shuffles more than she runs but she is moving her bod. I thought it was wonderful and made me think - if she can do it - I can do it. And now Im running too................ or shuffling quickly. LOL

Have more work to do to get to healthy fiber levels. I have increased them but not always in range like i should be.

Hope to get out for a run later today.... and a yoga class. Hugs everyone..... emoticon

Oh, ouch, Ponytrot! Tomator sauce AND wheat and milk?! Hope you can get through this quickly and figure out what's going on so you can return to a normal regimen. That's definitely a "tough row to hoe," as they say. My sympathies and encouragement go out to you!

I got outside for 5 miles of running yesterday, despited the wiiiiiiiiiind. Did Chinese New Years dinner at a friends, so tracking went out the window past lunch... I hit the veggies hard both for appetizers and the meal, so I suspect fiber came out in good shape, though my calorie count was more in danger...but I entered the meal with 1000-1200 to stay in range and was reasonable on desserts and only had one "drink," so maybe it didn't go so badly.

Today, I got in 5.5 miles of slow and easy running... the rest remains to be seen!

Exercise: walking (as usual) ... I was a little low on my Fiber today, but since I've been over for 5 days and in range for 1 day in past week, I'm not worried about it.
Have any of you tried/used Fiber One cereal? I recommend it.
My husband loves the original, eats it plain OR with yogurt, rarely with milk. Today had it with blueberries and then water to drink, which I would have not thought flavorful enough.
But we've both found we realy like the taste of it mixed in with the Quaker's instant high-fiber oatmeal we've tried, so we've been having that much more frequently recently. I'm not sure what I'll do when I move to the diet my allergist asked me to start over a week ago, where he wants me to give up not only tomatoes (I already don't eat raw ones, but now he says also no spaghetti sauce, ketchup, pizza sauce, etc.), but also wheat and milk (so not just whole wheat or reg. white bread, but also regular flour and the many cereals like Cheerios, raisin bran, etc., my standards... and no yogurt, ice cream, lactaid or other milk, and then there's cheese!) This for 3 weeks, and see where I'm at. My guess is I'll probably either (a) lose 10-12 pounds in that time or (b) say, "shoot me now and put me out of my misery" ... okay, not really, but I do NOT look forward to this extra wrench thrown into the meal planning. For now, I'm working my way into this by switching to soy milk, avoiding ice cream for diet sake, and having less cheese than usual, but not eliminating these yet. Oh, and peanuts.. forgot to mention that. What bothers me most about tackling is this: I've been to various allergists in different states, and their theories vary and test results differ, and I know I have lots of allergies, but I am not convinced that they really know what they are talking about, esp. since to give up wheat means probably eating potatoes and rice and oatmeal, all of which I tested allergic to in previous allergy tests, but for which this allergist did not test, I don't think.... and although I was retested for tree nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews I think?), they didn't show up as an allergy, though i've had strong throat-closing reactions to both almonds and cashews before, and tested positively before for allergies.... Sorry, I started to type a simple recommendation for the Fiber one cereal, and it turned into a vent because I can't imagine now dropping it back out of my daily options.

Got out for my second outdoor bike ride - 2 hours/30 miles - for my cardio.

Fiber is into "the range" though calories are well out - but that's partly by design as I worked in recovery snacks to account for the high calorie expenditure of the long bike ride. Differential on the day is about where it should be.

2 hr/30 mile bike ride (OUTDOORS!!!) for my cardio.

Fiber is still a bit low, but I'll probably have a snack shortly that will put me well into the range... it'll put me over calories, but it was a "high burn" day, so it seems prudent.

All the posts about running outdoors motivated me enough to get outside this AM. Even at 9am, it was warm enough to drop to a single layer after 2 miles of warming up. Doing 2 min hard/1 min easy intervals for the next 35 minutes kept me plenty warm! 6 miles total.

Planning to BIKE tomorrow... OUTDOORS. If I can keep my hands warm, I should be okay.

I know there'll be chilly days yet, but I'm definitely feeling like spring... even inside!

Have gotten my workouts in but they have been sluggish, especially this morning. I think because yesterday I slipped into comfort eating - not good. Lots of carbs with not much nutritional value. Hoping to nip it in the bud today...Packed lots of fruits and veges. When I looked at how much food I packed and figured out the calories, it reminded me that I can eat so much more "healthy" foods. I will focus on making better choices.

Looking forward to the nicer weather over the next few days. I can get in extra cardio by walking during lunch (as I did yesterday). This weekend, I hope to be outside jogging!!!

My evening snack brought my fiber into line, even though it also put me a bit over my calorie range max. But my exercise was over the target as well with 85 min/24 miles on the bike trainer with high aerobic heartrate intensity workout.

Had to come back and edit this because I ended up walking another 15 mins. when my husband decided he wanted to take a walk after he got home from work. He ended up doing a full 3 miles also by the time he stopped. This is the year we are BOTH going to lose weight successfully

Ponytrot, that's the right goal - healthy! I could certainly have been a bit healthier on choices today (perhaps veggies instead of the muffin, though it *was* good :)) - fiber was not quite up to the minimum.

No cardio today, but I did a hour of solid strength/abs training, which left me with that "good exhaustion" feeling in the muscles and feeling strong once I recovered.

Jazz, loved you story... good luck with that 5k!

Happy Valentines Day everyone.

Now that the weather is a little better - I am back out running and that feels great. For me - its the one thing I have found that melts off the fat . I am 57 years old........... and have never run in my life. I started out walking 30 minutes per day - and one day I decided to try running. Well I lieterally could not run 100 steps and I know because I counted them as I ran. But every few days I would get out for a walk - get to the same place and pick something to run to. Once it was a neighbors driveway - then it was a little further to a mailbox - then it was a little further again to a street corner............... and in about a month - I was running 1000 steps - and I know because I was counting them out as I ran. Then one day in my weigh in - I was down for the third consecutive time a pound and I knew I was on to something.

I just signed up for my first real 5k ------------------ challenge yourself. maybe running is not your thing - but something is the right "push" thing for you. Something that will push you right off of that plateau and into a new healty life habit.
You just have to find it and stick with it when it looks - feels and is hard to do.

Happy emoticon Day ........................ you are so worth being the best you can be

Weekend was a scrub for fiber...too many kids parties. Got in my exercise Saturday by rollerskating at one of the parties. Sunday...well...we'll call that my "cheat" day....80/20 rule right!!!!!

Back with a vengeance today. Up early to run on the treadmill. Egg sandwich on multigrain to help with both protein and fiber. Packed extra fruit and veges with the lunch to also help with fiber.

Thanks, Rosen. Scraped and bruised, but didn't keep me from doing a 4 mile Leslie Sansone walking dvd INDOORS. again, just no kicbacks or jogging (it is supposed to be intervals wtih jogging, or what she calls "Boosted walking", but they show the low intensity option without the bounce.)

Ouch, Ponytrot, sorry about the falls - and the knees. :( Hope you heal quickly.

Have really hit the fiber today - even had a mixed greens salad (very, very little of the dressing) with my lunch wrap instead of the pasta salad or french fries.

For cardio, I got out for a slow and easy 10 miles, which took me just over 1:45.

Got in a 4 mile run today...... Im trying to get to the point where I can run it continuously since now I am doing a walk - run until I have to walk again - walk - and then run again.......

Too much Valentine candy hanging around right now................... I like when healthier things are hanging around.
I really have to work on higher fiber and a better distribution of my calories.
Happy sunday to everyone.

We can all do a bit more outside activity with the heatwave coming to N Jersey. LOL emoticon

Did 2 mile walking dvd this eve. even though i'd already walked dogs at least twice and had fallen, resulting in two bloody knees, earlier in the afternoon. Needless to say, the knee lifts and kicks (forward and back) were Nowhere near as energetic as usual, but I did all the walking to complete the 2 miles.
Followed thru on fiber plans for today. Tomorrow am planning a high fiber oatmeal breakfast.

I put in a solid Spinervals Threshold Test/Sufferfest hour (17 miles) on my bike on the indoor trainer for my cardio - good choice, it sure was windy out there this AM!

Just had a chocolate almond butter on organic 7 grain bread snack that brought my fiber into the recommended range.

Checking in. got my cardio AND strength training today. Also boosted my fiber. Tomorrow making multigrain English muffins into French toast; that will help my fiber, and stirring in Fiber One cereal instead of croutons for my salad for lunch is the plan.

Got in an hour or so of strength training with Power 90 Level 5-6, Tony Horton's 10 minute abs, and some additional moves for upper body, core, and abs.

Put in 35 minutes on the indoor bike trainer for my cardio.

Fiber is right in the middle of the range and should go to the max with a planned snack in a bit.

Did my a.m. jog/walk on the treadmill but not my best workout. May try to get in a workout video tonight and jog again tomorrow a.m. Just 2 weeks away from the 5K.

Went over calories the other day and no way near the higher fiber content shooting for. So far so good today.

Im working hard at getting my fiber number up. I dont hit that target hardly ever and I should be able to. I changed up my morning snack to fat free yogurt and fibre one honey and oats cereal.

Sin is shining and I may go for a run................. but darn it is really cold out there.

No cardio but I did an hour of strength (P90 Level 5-6) and abs.

Kept the calories just under the max but managed to get in a reasonable amount of fiber with whole grains and "supplementals" (protein shake, etc.). Need to make veggies and fruits more routine.

Yesterday - 10 mile run/1:45 for my cardio. Definitely went a bit overboard for the superbowl :), but I did get a very good amount fiber and even some veggies.

Today, I lunched on the mixed pepper strips, tomatoes, and cucumbers I picked up at the supermarket salad bar yesterday and have definitely got the fiber up again. Got out for a 6.25 mile run earlier for my cardio.

Got my cardio in thie morning with a video workout. Wanted to walk at lunch but my normal path is still snow covered. That means some treadmill time tonight.

Do ok with fiber but really need some help with protein. Only make my goal once or twice a week.

Yesterday only got 10 mins. vigorous exercise, but not too far off on food. So today will increase to get 50 mins. cardio - walking DVD, and that should counteract Sundays rest.

Then I watched this woman and said if she can do it so can I so today starts my running outside again. Its supposed to be 40 degrees I think............ so thats good running weather.

I didnt pig out too much for the superbowl party. Ate some snacks but stayed reasonable.

Happy MOnday to all...............

I did 30 minutes on my new NordicTrack Elliptical trainer. It seems harder than the one at the gym. Kept to my eating plan. No Super Bowl munchies for me! Just finished dinner and tracking my food. Feel really good today.

Yesterday, did 85 tough minutes/24 miles on the indoor bike trainer. Fiber was a bit low and calories a bit high, though some untracked pizza veggies added a bit.

Today, did 45 min strength, another 15ish min of abs, and 30 minutes on the bike trainer for my 6th day of 30 min+ cardio this week. With the pizza veggies, got the fiber back up to the minimum.

A few veggies today, but need to do more. Have a couple of snacks planned that will keep me under the top end of my calorie range but will also boost my fiber intake to at least the low end of the SparkPeople recommended range.

Did 85 minutes / 24 miles on the indoor bike trainer, following a high intensity HR-guided Spinerals DVD (Time Trial-a-Palooza) for my 4th day of 30 min+ this week.

i did pretty good today. got to the gym and did the treadmill for 40 minutes then did a half hour urban rebounding dvd at home.
my eating is in check...i had 2 cookies today and still stayed in the low range of calories.

Going to a fitness class in the morning and then doing the treadmill again after that at the gym. I cannot wait for the mess outside to melt so I can jog to the gym and take a class - then jog home. soon I hope.

dont forget to wear red on friday................... heart healthy ! emoticon

Did 45 min of strength & abs, then an hour on the indoor bike trainer with an aero base building dvd for my cardio. That's 3 days with 30min+ for the week.

I usually don't have a problem meeting (or even exceeding) the SparkPeople recommended fiber range, but I was a bit low today. Perhaps I should have had some fruit and veggies instead of the chocolate cheesecake muffin....... :)

Will do; hmm 5x/wk. -= that will be the hard part, to remember to post.
I'll do more fiber and be sure my walking meets the minimum level. That ought to help overall goals, too. thanks for the Feb. challenge. If I make it, I'll donate $28 (dollar a day) to the Heart association. Setting myself up a dollar collection jar will help me remember to post, too.

Exercise doesn't have to be difficult. Any activity that raises your heart rate can be considered exercise, such as walking, cycling, swimming, gardening, or dancing.
Try to do moderate exercise at least 2½ hours a week. Our challenge this month will be to do 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week. Try to do vigorous activity at least 30 min per day at least 5 days per week . It's fine to be active in blocks of 10 minutes or more throughout your day and week.

There is also the eating part of this challenge.......... The American Heart Association recommends having a few meatless meals each week and increasing the amount of fiber and whole grains in your diet. There are lots of ways to do this. TheSP diet suggests eating "whole grains, such as oatmeal, barley, quinoa, brown rice, beans and lentils, nuts, as well as soy products. Dr Oz recommends a fibrer supplement 30 minutes before dinner and then either eliminating or only having a tiny portion of carbs at your dinner meal.

So for Feb --------- our challenge is to
1. get 30 solid minutes of vigorous activit
2. add more fiber to our meals
3. post here everyday on your progress and things you have learned and accomplished.

Happy Valentines( Happy Hearts Day emoticon
