She must have heard of our CC challenge, because this blog post speaks to exactly what we are trying to accomplish here. Be sure to take a look at it!

Good ones, Marge! A great start!

It's good that you picked two, doable habits to start with. Early success is a great kickoff and motivator!emoticon

There are so many habits I need to develop, I'm having a very hard time picking just one or two!!

1. What habit are you changing or developing?
2. What is the status of this habit right now?
3. How are you going to change or develop this habit? Be specific!
4. Implement your action plan! What specific thing did you do today to bring you closer to this habit?

********************************************************

1) Physical Habit: Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.

2) For the first 69 years of my life I never drank water - literally! I drank soda, tea, coffee, but I didn't like water. Then on SP I finally got into the habit of drinking my 8 glasses most days. But during the past two months, I lost that habit completely, and almost never drank a glass of water.

3)I am going to drink 2 glasses of water as soon as I get up. Then another 2 glasses after exercise (I exercise in the morning). I'll drink 2 glasses at lunch time, and the last 2 at dinner.

4) Today I did nothing, I am ashamed to admit. I will start tomorrow.

1) Spiritual Habit: Read a spiritual book at least 10 minutes at least 4 days a week.

2) There are so many spiritual books I want to read, but I never seem to make the time. I read other things (newspaper, best sellers) and I spend a lot of time on the computer, mostly with SP (besides my work, of course, which is mostly on the computer), but I rarely read spiritual books.

3) At lest 4 days a week, after my prayer time, I will remain in chapel to read from a spiritual book for at least 10 minutes - maybe longer if I have time.

4) Again, today I did nothing with this - I hope to begin tomorrow.

1. What habit are you changing or developing?

The habit I wish to develop is portion control.

2. What is the status of this habit right now?

I rarely measure out the meals I prepare at home. I eye-ball most of my portions. I frequently eat hurridly and standing up. I eat sweets directly from the package! At home, my portion control is seemingly nonexistent.

When dining at fast-food restaurants, I have gotten pretty good at knowing which favorite meal combinations help keep me within my plan.

When dining at sit-down restaurants, I always get a take-home container and put part of my meal in that. I'm pretty good at passing on alcoholic beverages and the bread baskets. Appetizers and desserts seem to know my name!

3. How are you going to change or develop this habit? Be specific!

I will attempt better portion control by measuring out the meals I prepare at home; by ordering pre-portioned food when dining out (e.g., a child's meal at a fast food restaurant); and/or by eating only one-third to one-half of an adult-sized meal at a sit-down restaurant. I will also continue to employ the SP-recommended portion estimates, such as 3 oz of meat is about the size of a deck of cards.

4. Implement your action plan! What specific thing did you do today to bring you closer to this habit?

I purchased bright red measuring cups and spoons from the dollar store! Thanks to my friends on another team for the idea of getting inexpensive measuring tools that are only used for my meals.

I also will copy and carry the SP notes about visualizing one's meal portions. See #3 above.

Next, I need to learn how to use the food scales I purchased a long time ago. One is still in the box! emoticon

I am going to begin going to the gym more frequently, I will be able to do this because i moved to a gym that is on my way home from work and because i have a packed gym bag in my car. I choose not to use the one use bottled water so what i have done is buy an extra sports bottle that i can fill up with my bottled water that i keep at work and leave in my car over night until i go back to the office the next morning. I also bought Ponds towelettes to wash my face so i don't have to exercise with a full face of makeup.

I was saying my rosary every day but i allowed myself to get away from that so i am now recommitting to my daily rosary which i can say right after my dinner and shower.
I will also begin going to a weekly Monday night novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. She has never failed in any request i have ever made to her and I have many friends and family who need her intersession.

Physical Goal
1) I am working to change my tracking habit.
2) Currently, my habit is hit or miss, mostly miss.
3) Instead of being on again, off again, hit or miss, I will track my food, all my food, every day. I will start by making better, easier to track choices. From long experience on sparkpeople, I already know which meals and choices are easier to log. Then, I will ensure I jot down what I am eating as I eat it during the day (on my scratch paper at work, then again at home). I have no excuse if I have my entire day already written down on paper NOT to then enter it all in the sparkpeople tracker!
4) Tuesday - today I kept track of and tracked my water!

Spiritual Goal
1) I am going to read my Bible three times a week for about 10 minutes at a time.
2) Currently, I am reading it once a week during my Adoration time, for about 20 minutes. I will continue that time, but add two other times of 10 minutes each.
3) I will look at each week on Sunday, and see which two evenings seem "free-est", in terms of things not planned. Then, on those two evenings, I will pick up my Bible and spend some time reading. After the dishes are done, and when everyone else is quietly working is the best time to do this.
4) I did not check the evenings this week. I shall do that tomorrow.

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things:... Psalm 98

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though... we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day my day....So fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal

Week 1: Healthy Habits Challenge

Please join us as we develop healthy habits over the next 6 or more weeks. See the Kickoff Information post for all the details.

This week, that is by Sunday, June 3, please do all of the following:

1. Select a habit to change or develop. See the list in the Kickoff Information post or select a habit of your own. It may be a good idea to write this habit down in a significant place and repeat it at least once a day. BE SPECIFIC

For example, your habit might be: “By the end of this challenge, my established habit will be to drink 8 cups of water per day. I will track this on SP.”

2. Determine the ‘status’ of this habit in your life. How are you doing now? The task here is not to change anything, but just to be aware of your baseline.

For example, if your goal is to drink 8 cups of water per day, how many are you currently drinking? 4? 6? How do you know? Are you tracking your water intake on SP? If not, maybe you should  You can track so much on SP. If you’re not, start today!

3. Brainstorm ways to improve/ develop this habit. This may take some work. Don’t underestimate the importance of this task. Take some time to think it through. This is the ‘how-to’ of developing a habit. It will take many ideas (some of which will work; others may not) to help develop this habit. Ask others how they developed the habit you wish to establish.

For example, perhaps you now know that you are currently, consistently drinking 6 cups of water per day. How are you going to get that amount up to 8 cups per day? What specific things can you do to establish the 8 cups of water per day habit? Perhaps you can drink a cup of water at specific times of the day: upon waking; at each meal and/or snack; in place of one daily cup of coffee, tea, or soda. Maybe you can increase the amount you drink; that is, drink what you usually drink, then take 3 more mouthfuls.

4. Create an action plan to improve/ develop this habit. This is the implementation phase of your plan! This is the DOING part!

For the water habit, maybe you can keep a pitcher of water at home and/or at work (in the refrigerator, if desired) and make that your own. That is, you only drink the water in that pitcher. Label it with your name so that others know not to drink from it. (Be sure they have their own pitcher of water, too!) Another way is to always carry water in a reusable bottle when you are out and about. Use the cup holders in your vehicle for water, not coffee or soda! Carry a small cooler to events. Stash a bottle of water in your purse or pocket. Use a shoulder sling or belt attachment to carry a bottle of water.

At the end of the day, add up the water from your pitcher, your bottles and other containers, and voila! You just drank 8 cups of water today. Congratulations.

Now post your how-to plans. That is, answer the following:

1. What habit are you changing or developing?
2. What is the status of this habit right now?
3. How are you going to change or develop this habit? Be specific!
4. Implement your action plan! What specific thing did you do today to bring you closer to this habit?
