So many food habits to work on. i was gone at the beginning of june and feel like i am still playing catch up on stuff.
My choices are:

PHYSICAL HABITS TO CHANGE OR DEVELOP.
Decrease unproductive computer time.

EMOTIONAL / SPIRITUAL HABITS TO CHANGE OR DEVELOP
Private journal more - this is when i can track my attitudes and ideas the best. I find my spirtiutality is often limited my some of my emotional immaturity. i also use my private journaling to ponder the readings or homily from mass. Our priest is a great orator and has some good ones, but i find my minds loses focus on the lessons after mass if i do not thing about them.

Don't forget to be awesome.

I have never participated in one of this team's challenges, as I have been a 'sometimes active lurker'... standing in the shadows or in the the dark, groping and hoping to, one day, come out and try to move forward. The HS spoke to me with this challenge and I believe he wants me to try to move forward. I am terrified of failure, although I have had a great deal of success with SparkPeople over all, I am a mess at this particular time in my life... my spiritual life is 'good', although I need to pray more... my food is not so good, as I need to eat less, and my physical being suffers because of the aforementioned, so I need to move more...
I commit to tracking my food daily (HUGE step forward)
I commit to 10 minutes a day of spiritual reading or tape listening and prayer.
I commit to moving more... starting with 10-15 minutes a day walking.

I step reluctantly in this path, but trust that the Holy Spirit and this team will guide me on the way. I know you have been working on this since Pentecost, but hey...the Spirit will sometimes take His time! God Help Me!

My challenge is getting the exercising done! I am trying to fit it in, but keep allowing obstacles get in my way. Today there will be no obstacles!

Thanks Dee!
Had a pretty good day...think the muscle pull is over with. Didn't get any real exercise in, but did chose parking spaces that were far from the entrance of the buildings I needed to go into...extra steps help!

Did give myself some positive commentary at the mirrors! Managed to get the in my prayers, time alone w/God, and Bible reading in! All in all, a rather Sparky day!

May everyone have a blessed sleep!

Back feels much better. Certain motions cause some twinges in my left shoulder blade area. At least taking a deep breath doesn't cause any pain! Have been doing pretty well with my physical and spiritual goals. Emotional needs a bit of help...not that I have been negative when looking in the mirror...I've just brushed hair, brushed teeth, and/or washed face or hands and then been on my merry way. I am going to focus on saying something nice to myself when in front of the mirror.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Grrrr! I hurt my back today moving boxes...not too bad now, but earlier it hurt to breathe. Didn't get any exercise in. Heat and ice, as well as ibuprofen, are helping. So much for keeping up with the challenge! Ah, but tomorrow is another day...

MY CHALLENGE IS MORE SLEEP
which I have been focusing on the last week. Problem: No matter what time I go to bed, I wake up 6 or 7 hours later. But I have been going to bed at a decent time (most of the week). Then this weekend we went camping, and I finally slept one night from 9:30 to 5:30am, 8 hours, but last night woke up many times, I am ready to go to bed right now at 8:30pm, but I have to get kids to go as well LOL!
I want to sleep in on my own cool sheets and pillows....

Spent lots of time with our Father this morning! He granted me some peace, which allowed some extra sleep! I also managed to say the Divine Chaplet, but fell asleep again reciting the Rosary. Funny thing, my dog usually pesters me between 5:30 and 6:30 to get him breakfast and let him out. This morning he came in and then walked back to his bed twice...I was pretending to be asleep, but actually talking with our Father and the next time he came in I was reciting the Chaplet. Like I said earlier, I fell asleep during the Rosary (can't remember how far I got, so I will start again shortly). I got an extra hour of good sleep. Feel most refreshed now!

Thank You, Lord...for You know my needs and provide!

I am also joining in late.
My goals will be:
Physical - make the effort to get in 5-6 fruits and vegetables daily.
Emotional - try to see the positive in less-than-ideal situations.
Spiritual - attend Mass at least once during the week as well as Sundays.

Better late, than never! I am starting this challenge as of yesterday. These three goals seem simple enough, but it is amazing how life can interfere with completing them...at least for me.

Physical: Get back to tracking! I have been very bad about this since last June, thus regaining a good portion of the weight. I know I need to track...accepting this challenge will motivate me!

Emotional: Say positive things to myself when I look in the mirror.

Spiritual: Go back to reading the Bible at least 10 min/day. Praying daily at least 1 Rosary, 1 Divine Mercy Chaplet, and a minimum of 10 min/day of alone time with God.

Dear Father in Heaven,
You know all of our hearts, desires, and needs. We have listed some of the things that we would like to do to make ourselves better servants for you. If it is Your Will, may we all attain our goals. If there are other goals You would prefer us to undertake, please have Your Spirit direct us. May You bless us always as promise by Your Son, Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

emoticon job LORI1132!

More good ideas! It sounds like everyone is off to a good start. Please remember to be as specific as possible when stating your goals. Quantifying them is helpful.

I've started a new thread entitled "Week 1: Healthy Habits Challenge," where specific tasks fort the week are detailed. I will do this every week for at least 6 weeks.

We'll post our weekly progress, suggestions, grievances, and discussions there.

Ok, so my weekend got away from me. But I did decide on my challenge goals:
1. Limit meals to 2 red meat per week (includes all meals).
2. Note three positive things about myself or those around me each day.
3. Say a daily rosary.

I will start as of today! I hope to document my success on my Sparkpage.

Great challenge! Good luck to all!

So I am going to walk daily and try to make it to 3 miles a day.. It is hard and I get tired.

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things:... Psalm 98

Great ideas everyone!

Remember to not overload yourself. It can be difficult to change many habits at one time, so go slowly and focus on the ones you need the most!

I particularly like JENIFIREHARP's post.I think her self-assessment is useful and she articulated a S.M.A.R.T. goal! emoticon

Perhaps, we all can consider revising our Other Goals to include those we've named here. It will help us keep track of how we're doing and avoid repetitive posts.

For example, I've been tracking my daily sleep habits by creating the goal: "Sleep at least 7 hours/day." Then I am able to track how many hours of sleep I get nightly. It keeps me very aware of how many late nights I have and how quickly I can get sleep deprived, cranky, and unfocused.

The new habit I'd like to develop during this challenge is one I've been fighting with since I joined SP in 2007. I would like to consistently measure my food and practice portion control daily.

I have a long history of 'eyeballing' my food, over- and under- estimating portions, and eating things (like ice cream!) out of the carton!! emoticon

While consistent cardio and strength training have kept my weight in check for most of the last two years, I feel my portions have never really been consistently in control.

On Tuesday, I'll start our "Week 1" thread and talk about specific tasks to do this week to move us toward establishing our personal healthy habits.

"Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein."

My choices:

Physical - track food daily

Emotional - this is the hardest for me, as it seems like I need help in all of the areas, lol! I think I will focus for now on the thinking more positively, not just always going to the negative.

Spiritual - continue my Bible reading at least 3 times a week (I am currently only reading it once a week at Adoration). Also, I will be taking part in the Novena.

I track my food and exercise on this site but am resolved to try and wake by 7 and either go to Mass or take a walk before it gets too hot.

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things:... Psalm 98

Sigh...LOL! There are so many habits to tweak and so many new ones to develop!
I had thought of choosing one from each category. That is taking on too much. Keep it simple!
I was given a challenge by the HS during Lent to go to 100 Masses before next Easter, so that is my Spiritual Habit I am currently working on. I need to go to daily Mass once a week to meet the goal.
On the Physical Habit front, I truly need to go to bed at a set time and get up at a set time daily.
Emotionally, right now I am all over the place... DH's issues are weighing heavily on my physical well being as well as mental.

SO! I think I will deal with the Physical Habit first! I'll check in here daily and post my Rest Schedule. If I am rested, I will have an advantage as I deal with DH's new developments. Plus it will help me stay focused on my TAG(Time Alone w/God) each day.

Step into the unknown with confidence! Trust that in the darkness of that first step there will either be something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly!

MY FIRST CHALLENGE IS PHYSICAL: MORE SLEEP

I've been in SP spring boot camp for the last month, so I feel I have a handle on the habit of Strength Training as I continue that positive habit at my gym, and my cardio is doing fine with daily biking, and my year long "miles forward" challenge. My food is healthy pretty consistently, as is everything that encompasses. But physically, my sleep habits are very lacking! So my personal challenge will be increasing sleep.

I really need this to be my focus, as I have been only getting an average of 6 hours nightly and I know I need 8!

Maybe I can daily check in here with my sleep hours? Last night was 5 1/2 hours, and I am pretty tired! I will work on this for the next week and then add something else to my challenge.

Jennifer:)

Oh there are so many things that I can do. My husband and I started making aome changes last week that will fit right in to this. :D. At the recommendation of my husbands spiritual director we have started doing the Office together once a day. Also, since we are off for the summer (we're both in University) we have instituted a daily routine to keep us from having that unproductive computer time. I also need to add doing the rosary back in. I had been tring to do it every night, but at the end of Lent I stopped. I'm going to add that back in.

Thank you so much for giving us all the encouragement to think about all of this!

Such a very good challenge. I keep thinking that I need to work on ALL of your suggestions. It'll be hard to narrow it to just one for each category. So, I'll consider it prayerfully and repost what I will work on tomorrow!

A blessed Memorial Day to all!

Healthy Habits Challenge Kickoff Information

“Lord, send out your spirit, and renew the face of the earth.” (Psalm 104)

Thank you for your patience everyone! I am just now posting the details of this challenge.

(It’s been a busy holiday weekend here with my teenage daughter going to prom and that same daughter and my husband working at a local soccer tournament. Uniform laundry is being done now to have it ready for Monday morning!)

I hope everyone had a beautiful Pentecost Sunday!

I love Pentecost, as my church is named for the Holy Spirit. Our parish is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year!

Thus, today’s liturgy is one of my favorites. It often gets me thinking about how I can invoke the Holy Spirit to move me to do more good. So, what better time to invoke that same Spirit to move us all toward healthier habits? For many of us here in North America, this is just in time for summer.

Among of the goals of this challenge is change ourselves—physically, emotionally, and/or spiritually—to move us to a healthier place—just as the apostles moved to evangelize the world.

Now, our aim to not to move the entire world, but only to move a small part of it! Since it takes time to change our habits, this challenge will last at least 6 weeks.

Everyone’s suggestions are welcome! How did you develop some of your healthy habits? Share what you have learned! Feel free to post links to articles, videos, and any particularly helpful SP resources.

The healthy habits to consider are divided into three categories--physical, emotional, and spiritual. You may select ONE habit from the list or post ONE of your own.

Thus, the first task is to select ONE habit that we would like to change or develop. It could be any habit that has been affecting any part of our health. Below is a list of healthy habits to consider. (Thanks to CJBAGGINS for this part of the challenge emoticon )

PHYSICAL HABITS TO CHANGE OR DEVELOP
Track your food intake for 5 of 7 days.
Track your workouts for 5 of 7 days.
Increase water intake.
Increase fruit and/or vegetable intake.
Increase protein intake.
Decrease sodium intake.
Decrease refined sugar intake.
Decrease soda intake.
Increase cardio training.
Increase strength training.
Increase amount of sleep.
Decrease unproductive television viewing.
Decrease unproductive computer time.

EMOTIONAL HABITS TO CHANGE OR DEVELOP
Smile more. emoticon
Say at least three positive things to yourself daily.
Say at least three positive things to others daily.
Encourage another team member during this challenge (post comments to their page; use sparkmail; give a goodie; comment on a blog).
Politely ask for help when you need it (no whining please).
Frown less. emoticon
Find a way NOT to say negative things.
Vent your anger in a productive way (exercise, maybe?).
Endeavor to see the positive in a less-than-ideal situation. That is, try to make ‘lemonade’ from the ‘lemons’ in your life.

SPIRITUAL HABITS TO CHANGE OR DEVELOP
Pray more.
Join our current novena that CJBAGGINS and CATHOLICORGI are running.
Attend Mass at least once during the week AND on Sunday.
Go to Adoration, Rosary, or other prayful opportunities.
Learn more about the saints, especially if you have a patron saint (your Confirmation name, maybe; or perhaps your profession’s patron).
Take a Bible study class or attend a lecture.
View some Catholic programming—either on television, online, or on video. Check your local library.
Work on any of the spiritual or corporal works of mercy.

Remember to post the habit you’ll be working on!
