What a blessing that you found a priest who truly listened to you about it!

Yeah, we don't always have a choice either.

I wonder if there is there a patron saint of confession?

It was very frustrating to me that my sin, and my anguish over it, were minimized. It was a relief that another priest recognized that my sin was of great concern to me and actually discussed the matter with me instead of brushing it off, as the first priest had done.

We don't have a choice of confessors unless we make an appointment to meet with a specific priest privately. Whoever celebrates the Saturday morning Mass hears confessions afterward.

I wonder if that was frustrating to you that a sin that was causing you anguish was minimized. I remember the wonderful priest (monsignor now) who brought me into the Church said once that he would vary the penance based on someone's anguish over the sin, not the sin itself always. He understood that small or big sins can cause us great pain.

I'm glad another priest was able to give you useful ideas!

It's a shame that you do not particular care for your rector. I actually do not confess to mine either. But I enjoy receiving the sacrament from our school's director priest, his assistant, and many others who I may visit.

I generally just go to confession about 4 times a year; one priest minimized a sin which was causing me a great deal of anguish, but when I confessed the same sin to a different priest, he gave me some good ideas! We quite often have priests coming and going from our parish, so it would be hard to establish a relationship with one particular priest, unless it were the rector, but I don't particularly care for him...

There are probably advantages to a regular confessor - they can guide you in your habitual sins (if you are all anything like me, lol!), and the ones you struggle with the most.

However, there are also benefits to having different ones sometimes. It can be convenient to go to who is available at a given time. I like different confessors styles and suggestions.

Thanks for the idea of bringing up a wandering mind in confession! I don't have a problem at Mass but it's bad when I am saying the rosary!
I don't have a personal confessor either; I just make my confession to whichever priest is hearing confessions on the Saturdays I go.

Just found this thread. I'm glad I'm not the only one with these problems. During the Rosary, I add some words to remind myself about what mystery i am on (I got the idea from a boof on the rosary by St Louis?--I can't remeber the exact name or title. When I find it I'll post it). Mass is more troublesome. My main issue was falling asleep. So, i stopped having any milk in the morning before mass because milk makes me sleepy and i would make extra strong coffee. So, that would help me stay awake. But now that i am more alert, i find my mind wandering! I CAN'T WIN! I never actually thought of bringing it up in confession (I don't have a personal confessor). I should probable think about doing that.

I have mild ADHD and one of the techniques I have used with some success when I really need to focus is to provide myself with a deliberate distraction. This can be a repetitive mindless task, or instrumental music -- something that I actively have to tune out. This occupies that part of my mind that's likely to wander, so that I can focus the other part of my mind on what I'm doing. I find that saying the rosary while I'm washing dishes or driving or something like that works well. To keep track of where I am in the decade, I say the number out loud.

When my mind really won't stop wandering, I use this website to keep me on track. It provides a meditation for each bead in each decade, as well as details on the Mysteries overall.

When I'm praying the Rosary I have to focus on the mystery or my mind will wander to all places. That's the hardest part for me when praying the rosary focus and concentration.

That reminds me of what someone told me once - give the distraction to Jesus. Just offer it up, say this is bothering me, please take it for now.

I was told just to keep bringing yourself back to where you are aware of your Hail Marys. It might just be the Holy Spirit prompting you to think (pray) for what the distraction was.

When all your desires are distilled, you will cast just two votes: to love more and to be happy.

I pray the rosary, mostly on the road everyday and at other times. If any of you have ever heard of Zen Buddhist sitting, called zazen or if you've perchance sat zazen, the practice of stillness, of clearing your mind; then you already know this about praying the rosary.

The striving to be completely present in the activity is the practice and the devotion at the same time. Gently bring yourself back into the presence. Use your deep stillness and imagination to be in the presence but even then, praying the rosary consistently and practicing this way will in time move one more deeply in concentration.

But like peeling an onion we can go deeper and deeper still. Isn't prayer our most unifying devotion? Love you guys, my favorite inspired team!

I also have this problem, and have brought it up in Confession. I've been told that sometimes it's enough to just spend quiet time with chant musi and opening oneself up to God. At Mass, I'm usually but not always able to keep focused, but as someone else said, we often do our best thinking at Mass, and that may be because we are in God's presence.
I'm not a rosary prayer, but do get in a decade at a time, or pray the chaplet of Divine Mercy. I'm rather ADD when it comes to prayer, and must deal with it. I am a spontaneous prayer person, too. I try to remember often to stop and pray a quick one to never stray too far away. I'm not sure how well I do, but I try.
I love the reminder of the angels, and their love and care for us. Yes, I believe it and thank God for it!

Some great answers here!

Mary - I loved what you said about the angels. It reminded me that we can ask our Guardian Angel to help us to stay focused. We have so many 'helpers', I sometimes forget all of them!

Also, if we can find a saint (probably very easy to do as they were all human as well!) whose mind wandered during prayer times, we can ask them to pray for us as well.

My sweet mother (age 90) always says that the angels finish the Rosary for you----and I do some of my best 'thinking' during Mass. I just don't worry about it. God loves us and understands where we are and why we're there! Continue to pray and be aware of your foibles---and go on with life and be happy!

One thing I find helpful is to keep a small pamphlet with me that has a reading about each mystery. When I'm wandering away, I read the reading while I'm praying the Hail Mary's and that brings me back. Also, I have a couple of CD's of the Hail Mary. Sometimes it helps to pray along with that. And finally, I sometines put on a CD of Chant music and that helps to keep me centered.

Don't be too hard on yourself. We're human, and we're fickle! God understands. He knew we would struggle with this very thing, and yet He loves us. Do your best, He'll do the rest.

I don't know the character, but my parents used to watch that show all the time!

My dh used to check his locker at university umpteen times. I've picked up the habit, I think!

Fortunately, now when we go somewhere for a trip, and we're nervous about locking the house or whatever, all we have to do is have one of us watch the other one, then we can say, "Yep. Saw you do it. It's done." Then, we're reassured.

I feel the same way about Mass. It is easier to concentrate then.

And sometimes when I catch myself wandering in my mind during a decade, I re-say a Hail Mary or two, but I have to watch myself as I am scrupulous, and it would be never-ending for me!

My confessor said to just get back on track and not worry about it, but this did not seem to solve my feelings of angst over it. When you realize you are ending a rosary decade and had your mind on other things what do you do, back up or start that decade over? I'd be in a vicious cycle every time I attempted to say the rosary.
At Mass it seems much easier to shut my eyes to everything around me while responding to the priest, or to concentrate on what the priest is doing. emoticon

What did your confessor say? Did he have any good suggestions? I struggle with this as well, and solved it for now by using a scriptural rosary, and reading a scripture passage for each Hail Mary for all the decades.

I have the same problem, and will be interested in anything suggested. I don't seem to have the problem at Mass much, but saying the rosary, I seem to be thinking of everything BUT the mysteries I am supposed to be contemplating.
