Good idea! I, too, say Hail Marys often. When I wait in line and am getting impatient, if I say a few Hail Marys, I regain patience. While I have my teeth drilled, I say them continually and it distracts me from the sound!

Please remember that all our brothers and sisters include the precious lives of the unborn. Pray for the unborn to be protected and cherished. Pray to end abortion. During Lent there is a "40 Days for Life" program throughout our nation, and as Catholics, we can devote prayer and Christian action for these precious innocents.
Every morning when I awake, I say the Hail Mary to start my day. I say the Hail Mary as I use my curling iron. I say the Hail Mary as I wait at the stop lights. It is a sweet way to fill idle moments, to focus on Mary our Mother...and to include special intentions.
May Lent be a special time of prayer, reflection, and gratitude. God Bless us all!

Rejoice in each new day; it is a gift!

1. Say The Divine Mercy prayers each day during Lent.
2. Do not eat any desserts, not even on Sundays this year.
3. Walk an extra hall or more each day in the hospital.
4. Smile at strangers more than usual while I'm walking.

Spiritual: Daily Rosary and daily talk to God, including Prayer Partner in blessings of the day.

Health: strictly adhere to calorie range of 1200-1300 per day using self control and Nutrition Tracker. (A huge one for me!)

Fitness: Begin each day with stretching exercises after morning prayer and self talk.

Social: Continue supportive and encouraging interaction with SP members and smile at all I meet each day. Include family members in this pledge.

I have to say that I need my husband to give up complaining. We we discussing what to give up or add during Lent and because he is not working and is home, where I work just part-time, I had a rather long list for him...LOL. We are still talking about it. Mainly we know that over indulgence is a sin and that we will work on life time changes for the better. My husband and I will be going to Daytona Beach on Ash Wednesday so we will attend a church there for our ashes. †

Please accept my apologies for not having posted in this thread soon. We are celebrating the Chinese New Year here in Taiwan that really keeps everybody busy...

For our Lenten challenge, let's post here everyday beginning Ash Wednesday, 17 February, in this format:

(Remember, they are your own choices. Those are what you wanted to sacrifice for
God. And, these sacrifices must be offered to... to those who do not believe, that they will open their eyes, to a brother who had sinned, and so on... They're
up to you.)
Day 1 - 17 February:
Spiritual - attend Mass, read Lenten book, station of the cross
Health - give up coffee and rice
Fitness - walk from home to church (2-way) - 50 minutes
Social - talk to a friend in need (share the name of your friend and how did you help)

Day 2 - 18 February
Spiritual -
Health -
Fitness -
Social -

How's that? The good thing here is we will cover every aspect of "love" that Jesus wants us to have. Please remember that the mere fact that we accept our own Lenten challenge means we have love in us. We love Jesus above all. Often, we need to be reminded by our brothers and sisters. And, this is the reason we are all here... We help each other grow our faith. And, this lent is one of the most
excellent time to start.

emoticon , because Jesus is in you!

I've decided to give up all beverages. I will only drink water. Each time I choose water over another drink, I will be reminded that Jesus is the Living Water. I will also spend time each day before the Blessed Sacrament in the Adoration Chapel.

In my household we abstain from meat on Wednesdays and Fridays during Lent.

We also give up going out to eat.

This year I am personally giving up facebook (gasp!) and DH and I are committing to nightly prayer and devotions together.

I will also work on not complaining to or criticizing my husband, but building him up instead.

I will give up some of my time reading the daily paper - no more than 15 min. a day. I will use the extra time to make Stations of the Cross at least 3x a week and Spiritual read for a longer time each day - at least 20 minutes. Sister Lorraine

Thanks for posting St. Gertrude's prayer for the holy souls in purgatory. I love that prayer and pray it daily, sometimes several times a day. I have a special affinity for the souls in purgatory and love to think that I may be doing them some good. Especially since some of them are probably family members.

I read this and thought I'd share it here:

What is the meaning and purpose of Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday is a wake-up call. Ash Wednesday hits us squarely between the eyes, forcing us to face mortality and sinfulness. We hear Scripture readings that are urgent and vivid. We have black ashes rubbed into our foreheads. We recite a Litany of Penitence that takes our breath away, or should. It is a tough day, but take heart! This is one religious day that won.t fall into the clutches of retailers. There aren.t any Hallmark cards celebrating sin and death; no shop windows are decked out with sackcloth and ashes.
On Ash Wednesday we come to church to kneel, to pray, and to ask God.s forgiveness, surrounded by other sinners. Human sin is universal; we all do it, not only Christians. But our church tradition sets aside Ash Wednesday as a particular day to address sin and death. We do this mindful that "God hates nothing God has made and forgives the sins of all who are penitent." We are ALL sinners, no better and no worse than our brothers and sisters. This is not a day to compete ("my sins are worse than yours are"), but to confess..

Ash Wednesday is the gateway to Lent. We have forty precious days to open ourselves up most particularly to God, to examine ourselves in the presence of one who created us, knows us, and loves us. We have forty days to face ourselves and learn to not be afraid of our sinfulness. We are dust, and to dust we shall return, but with God.s grace we can learn to live this life more fully, embracing our sinfulness, allowing God to transform us

The Rev. Margaret Jones - from "Ash Wednesday" A Wake-up Call

I love the idea of giving up complaining for Lent. especially because, I think, deep down, I enjoy it so. :)

Habit is habit and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time.

Our Lord told St. Gertrude the Great that the following prayer would release 1,000 Souls from Purgatory each time it is said. The prayer was later extended to include living sinners as well.

"ETERNAL FATHER, I OFFER THEE THE MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD OF THY DIVINE SON, JESUS, IN UNION WITH THE MASSES SAID THROUGHOUT THE WORLD TODAY, FOR ALL THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen."

What a lovely thought to pray daily for the souls in Purgatory. There seems to be a dirth of information about this place of waiting in the younger generation these days. Those poor souls are dependent on our good thoughts and deeds.

I really like the idea as well of giving something up and replacing it with something positive. The idea of not complaining is awesome! I don't curse very much, but I'd like to also try not to curse at all during Lent and beyond. But I think as my "something positive", I'm going to make sure I pray daily for the souls in Purgatory.

USE2BAGODDESS, thanks for posting this. It's quite inspiring!

In years past, I have given up secular TV and music and only allowed myself to listen to Christian music and watch EWTN, especially the Mass at 7:00.

These days, I only listen to Christian music anyway, so that's not a challenge for me anymore.

All of the ideas for Lent are very good!

I'm a cradle Catholic and have often given up something temporal for Lent. This year I think I'm going to continue to do that--as well as taking something on to replace what I'm giving up. Perhaps extra prayer time in place of some of the time spent in front of the computer.

Thanks for the ideas!

For Lent I have always tried to make daily mass (I have to drive 30min) and then stay to say the rosary afterward.

My most favorite devotion which was taught to me by a friend almost 20 years ago is that on Good Friday I go to the church (at a minimum) from 12-3pm.

I can no longer kneel the entire time, but the way I see it is I can't know for sure if (had I lived during the time of Jesus) I would have recognized Him as the Christ. Secondly, I can't know if I would have had the courage to follow Him to the cross and kneel as He hung there dying for me.

I do; however, have the benefit of 2,000 years of martyrs, learning, and knowing who He is. There is no reason why I can not now go and be at the foot of the cross!

It feels weird being in church without the Eucharist. As the church does feel very empty, but once He was dead the world must have suddenly felt very empty.
I kneel and sit while reading and praying. Often I try to stay as long as I can.

In the evening, we have the reading from the passion and then we have a silent procession representing Our Blessed Mothers walk to the tomb.

It is not uncommon for me to go home late in the afternoon and watch "The Passion of the Christ". I think it is appropriate.

I also spend approx. 3 Fridays before Good Friday watching the 3part mini-series Jesus of Nazareth. Finished on Good Friday by The Passion.

Lent is really one of my favorite times of year because I give so much of it to Our Lord. I just need to figure out how to give Him the rest of my year!

Awesome, Onethirtythree!!! Glad the prayers worked. Isn't God great?

I've been putting a lot of thought into my Lenten discipline this year, and I'm thinking that I need to fast from the negativity at work and replace it with prayer for my colleagues. I'm working with some people who are angry or have some type of negative emotions, and I get caught up in that. Instead of wasting time on it, I think that I will make a list of everyone involved and commit to praying for them daily. When the negative thoughts start to enter my mind I will pray for someone in particular. Actually, there are a few people outside of work that I could add to the list.

This is just what is starting to formulate in my mind.

Onethirtythree giving thanks to God for his many blessings. Our God is good! When faced with any challenge we just need to remember 29-eleven!

That's Jeremiah, "I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans to prosper you, plans to give you hope."

I'm facing some financial challenges. I just keep reminding myself that God can make a way where there seems to be no way. His mercy endures forever! Praise God!

Glad you got the job onethirtythree. I started doing adoration one year during Lent and have continued ever since. I have a commited time slot and it is amazing how fast that hour can go! I also try to give up one, take one on. I guess I'm waiting for inspiration to strike for this year. Last year it was give up eating out of the vending machine and add re-studying to renew my deMontfort Total Consecration. Due to Fr.'s schedule I had to end up waiting until April. That's okay as I never feel ready enough! That's a hard act to follow so maybe, I'll just repeat those again this year unless something (or Someone) nudges me to do something different!

So many great ideas! Last year (which was my first official Lent) I tried to give up too many things, and I was so stressed out. I'm glad this was posted, it gives me time to really think abou tit and plan better.
I like the idea of adding something, and I love the idea of building someone up to replace gossiping.

I loved reading everyone's posts. Count me in!.

I have been doing alot of thinking about what ton do for Lent. While my work/commute schedule prevents daily mass, I think that I would like to spend time in Eucharistic adoration. My chuch has perptual adoration, so there's no time constraints. I defineitely need to give up some TV time. It's my addiction!

If anyone is looking to do some spiritual reading, I have two books that I really found spiritually motivating & thought provoking. The first is Reaching Jesus: 5 Steps to a Fuller Life by David Knight and the second is Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver.

Elizabeth - when the priest puts it like that, it sounds very bad, doesn't it?

Elizabeth and KEENTINA - I agree about the Catholic ideas. They're great. I like the idea of a healthy component for me, as then I am more committed when it is a Lenten promise!

I like the idea of giving up and adding something Catholic. I've had to make some major cuts to my budget but I am trying to establish better habits, jobhunting and considering new places to live (more budget cutting).

I'd like to give up some sleep, take an earlier, scheduled bus which would save me some money but give me 5-1/2 hours to kill before my part-time shift. I could use the 6 hours for jobhunting, reading the Bible, attending Mass and praying - all of which could only bring me positive results! The savings won't be enough to pay for car repairs but it could be put to good use elsewhere.
I'm also weeding out things for donations as opposed to selling. It's kind of the lazy way out but it will go for a better cause.
I don't really give up much for food to eat healthy so I don't want it food-based. I eat primarily chicken, fish and veggie meals now as my preferred meals.

This is kind of a funny story. Last year I gave up Diet Pepsi for Lent. You have to understand, Diet Pepsi is my drug of choice, so this was a huge sacrifice. I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't last very long before I started cheating. emoticon
I went to confession and asked my priest whether it was a sin that I had broken my Lenten vow. He said that "no, it really isn't a sin, you just broke your promise to God". Wow, I felt horrible!!!

I'm having to give up so much with my healthy eating and exercise program that I think I'd like to make my give up/take on something spiritual. I have to think (and pray) about it. February 17 seems like a long way off, but it will be here before you know it!

Oh my! What a fabulous response, you guys! thank you so much for all of your ideas!

It seems like a give up but take on idea is an appealing one for most of you.

Incorporating a healthy aspect and a Catholic one is also intriguing to you.

I love the idea of doing something for others as a 'take on' (or can be a give up, as some have suggested - not gossiping, praying for those we dislike, etc.).

Great!

Great ideas !!!

I teach my Sunday School class that a Lenten program should have 3 parts - Prayer, Fasting/Abstinence, and Almsgiving.

For prayer, I've typically focused on the Stations or Rosary, but I LOVE the idea of praying for someone we have a hard time accepting.

For Almsgiving, we can also include Good works - maybe the corporal and spiritual works of mercy

These are great ideas! I like the idea of giving up TV and reading scripture daily. A balance of letting go and starting or continuing a new better habit, use of time.
Daiy Mass would be difficult for me as I am at work during those hours.
It seems like Christmas just ended and here comes Lent, time goes by quickly!

Love the ideas people are sharing. One point on all of the "give ups": We are here on a health/wt loss web site. Most of the "give ups" people are suggesting are foods, that we should give up, even if we were not Catholic, as participants in healthy eating/wt loss programs. So...my suggestions is that we give up something that would not be part of a diet/healthier eating program in addition to the giving up of the chocolate, cookies, ice cream etc.

I like the ideas of people giving up watching TV or playing video games. Since I do neither looks like I am going to give up being on line as much as I am. I'm going to set a timer and limit myself to 1hr/day...well ,maybe 1 1/2 hrs/day.

How about giving up one hr/day watching regular TV programs and watching EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network) or listening to a Catholic Radio station instead. I've learned so much about my faith listening to Catholic Radio.

I also like the pro-active bent of praying for others, attending at least one Mass during the week, saying the Rosary and/or Divine Mercy Chaplet.

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.

Last year I prayed the rosary daily and went to mass only once during the weekdays for Lent....not sure what I'm doing this year.......need to think about it. Ash Wednesday is not till the 17th of February...so we still got a lot of time!

Barbara .....that's what my friends call me! Never cared for the name Barb.

Make it a blessed and healthy day! IT IS YOUR CHOICE!

I plan to give up meat on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and continue with my spiritual readings and daily Rosary.

This sounds good! I'm still new in faith too- 2 years almost. I know I plan on giving up alcohol but I'll think of something to add.

Love the Lenten ideas! For the non-vegan Critters, perhaps adding a second day of abstinence, each week, would be both a challenge and sacrifice.

Everyone has "willpower"!...What most of us really desire (and lack) is, "Won't power"! Since we gain strength by prayer, add "Jesus, Mary & Joseph, save souls" to the "No, I won't give in to that temptation, today... perhaps another day..." and make your temptation resistance a new prayer!

Commit to sleep...getting enough sleep to stay strong in the battle against both the "Food Demon" and the "You Can Pray Later Demon"! When sleep is missing from our regimen, the level of temptation goes up... hmmm

Thanks CJ for getting this going & asking for input.
I really like some of glad2beme's ideas.
Also another Catholic idea is Stations of the Cross, at least one during the Lenten season.

Guess I am in. Now tracking this is another issue.

Oh I just thought of another idea! For those interested in helping someone you truly don't know... why not give ahead, a large monetary gift to the folks in Haiti?? There is a Catholic org. called Food For The Poor, INC. I like it because 97% of the money goes directly to the cause. Please look up the actual web site:

www.foodforthepoor.org/haitiquake

See for yourselves what it is about. Remember this is just a hopeful SUGGESTION for Lent & the people in Haiti.

What great ideas...I'm IN! Last year was my 1st Lent since a kid. I gave up chocolate! I did it! I remember last year that my family and I ordered McDonald's. I ordered a vanilla latte and got a mocha one. Told my husband I wouldn't drink it and my kids cheered me on. I wanted to show them that if you put your mind to something you can do it. I did get chocolate for Easter...snicker.

I'd like to take away a TV show & add exercise.
Pray the rosary.

To the poster who doesn't know what some things mean....neither do I. I'm still learned. I had only 3 1/2 years of religion as a child, so much I've had to learn on my own. :-)

Hey, Mom23cutie,
Welcome to your first Lent. I have been Catholic since 1995. I read this recently in a book by a Catholic author. (I can't remember the exact quote) You are composed of body and spirit. Your body tells you when to get up, when to eat, when to sleep. Lent is a time to deny your body and let your spirit be strong. You prove to yourself that your spirit is stronger than your body.

BTW - Things I have given up.

*Video and Computer games. I replaced video games with job searching It worked. Soon after Easter, 1996 I got the job still have today.

*All Sweets.
*All television shows I allowed movie rentals.
*Cheese. I love cheese. I'd cut off a big hunk and eat it with crackers. Giving up cheese, pretty much means giving up pizza too. I allowed cottage cheese to my daughter's disaproval.
*Caffeine.
*Ice cream.

I always told my kids this is something you put on yourselves. You make up your own rules and follow them the best you can.

I love the idea of replacing a negative habit with a positive one. What if the positive habit had to be something that benefited more than just ourselves? A friend, family member, neighbor, stranger? Just my two cents =)

Count me in - have a Catholic element. I'm more prone to want to do/add something that is not intended to benefit me, but someone else.

This sounds like a great idea. I also really like the idea of praying for someone that I don't like every day. I tend to get pretty judgemental and critical at work and I think if I was praying for these people I will let go of some of those feelings.

I would like to add something and perhaps give up something. I have had trouble with the giving up thing but I think it's because my life has been the commuting thing for the past three years and the stressful job; however I am willing to participate.

I also like the giving up a bad habit and adding a spiritual one. I really think the giving up one tv show (most have unhealthy life choices in them) and adding prayer or bible study during that time.

For the past few years I have added something rather than sacrificing something since I tend to have problems in the motivation department. One of the best was praying for someone I don't like very much every day - did not matter if I knew them personally or if they were politicians, celebrities, or people in the news. I found I was able to let go of a lot of negativity that way.

I am all in favor of picking up a healthy habit while dropping an unhealthy one as part of a challenge.

I really like the idea of "giving up" and "taking on". For whatever we give up, we need to take on something positive to replace the old behavior. For example, if we are going to give up gossip, we might take on the behavior of building someone up daily. Or if someone wants to give up cigarettes, they might take on the behavior of eating more vegetables and fruits. Or give up 20 minutes of television for 20 minutes of Bible study, etc.

But I would also like something definitely Catholic. Maybe, as part of Lent, we could commit to one daily Mass a week, or one daily Mass for the whole period of Lent (depending on your circumstances). There are so many possibilities - pray a Rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet, do a random act of kindness, and the list is limited only by our imagination.

Thanks, CJ, for getting us thinking about Lent. I'd like to see what others have to say.

Stay tuned!
Being tweaked as I type!
I need to pray about this before I post a definite challenge.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would like to include a healthy component, as well as a Catholic one.

Also, I often follow, during Lent, a 'give something up' idea, as well as a 'start doing something new' idea. I wish to try and incorporate that into this challenge as well.

Perhaps if we have give something unhealthy up and start doing something healthy, as well as do something for our soul at the same time.

Ooh ooh - or...give up something we normally do (watch questionable television programs), and replace them with something healthy (exercise) or something for our soul (spiritual reading).

What do you guys think?
