Yes, the plan is to not stop adoration once the new church is built, except for the occasional funeral, wedding, or possibly a week day mass when there aren't many people. I think there are still several things to work out. The church itself was condemned once, but brought back up to current standards. So we are hoping for the best

Lainye, How wonderful to have a small, personal church for so long.

I loved a small church I had attended in my early teens. It was an old general store from the late 1800, with an old 1800's post office attached to the side as a wing. It held maybe 120 people. We knelt on boards covered with carpet samples and could see through the floor boards to the dirt below. By the late 1960's it was replaced by a hugh beautiful modern edifice about 1/2 mile away that could hold probably 800 people. Beautiful, but not the same as the old building.

I hope your new church building still keeps the feeling of community for the congregation.

What a great way to incorporate the old and the new! Also, then I guess the problem of having to stop Adoration for Mass will be gone.

Yes, we are blessed. It started after 9/11 and has continued. We did have a period where the church was closed at midnite and reopened at 5AM, but now we are back to full power. Ours is a 150 year old small church that seat 150 - 200 max. We will start building the first phase of our new church this spring. Our small church will become the adoration chapel and used for small funerals and weddings, which will be wonderful The church has so many memories that the parish did not want to tear it down.

LAINYE - we have perpetual adoration in our city now too. What a blessing! What we did was create a whole Adoration chapel where it can continue day and night without interruption, as it is separate from the main church and Mass does not interfere. Is it possible to set that up in your area?

If you have perpetual adoration, there must be enough interest and dedication from the people to maybe make it happen.

there was also another site I checked out but it was very difficult to decipher. Lots of technical phrasing about Catholic doctrines. But in it there was a section on Bedediction that stated the Bishop had to be asked for permission in all cases of Benediction (which I never heard or knew of)
It also said that the while many traditions and customs of Benediction are the same, it does vary from country to country and region to region. I took this to mean that possibly some diocese may do it one way others have a different interpretation. I liked the one I posted because whenever you need an answer they put it into laymen terms.
I'll ask monsignor at Mass tomorrow and see if he has a good explanation.

Win the battle today!

Thanks so much MCB. We have adoration 24/7. It is stopped only for masses and special services like the stations. If I read this correctly, we could continue to do the stations, have Benediction and then Adoration which we have always done. Our young priest is very rigid and would like us to return to olden values, like Mass in Latin, replace the communions rail, etc. I guess he just didn't like the changes that were made in the 60's even though he was very young then.

I'm sure we all have made a mistake on a Friday during Lent in the past. If we forgot it was Friday it is not a sin.

Once I bought a Big Mac...took two bites and then saw the sign for Fillet of Fish being on sale on Fridays (during Lent). emoticon . Sometimes even fast food restaurants help to remind us.

The Big Mac went into the trash and I ordered the Fillet. Sigh.

Here is a beautiful thing. My 17 year old son, who I fixed the turkey sandwich for, texted me and asked if we were supposed to eat meat on Friday. I guess God has used me to be a better example than I thought. I think it is the on purpose things that offend God more.

This is the article I found on americancatholic.org; link is at bottom of answer. I signed up several months ago to get daily e-mails from them so I thought I'd look it up there for you.

Stations of the Cross During Benediction?
Q: Some people in our parish say that it is not proper to expose the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance, pray the Stations of the Cross and then have Benediction. Is that true? Where can I find the current regulations for Benediction?

A: In 1973, the Congregation for Divine Worship published a document entitled Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside of Mass. It states: “During the exposition there should be prayers, songs and readings to direct the attention of the faithful to the worship of Christ the Lord.

“To encourage a prayerful spirit, there should be readings from Scripture with a homily or brief exhortation to develop a better understanding of the eucharistic mystery. It is also desirable for the people to respond to the word of God by singing and to spend some periods of time in religious silence” (#95).

That same document recommends that part of the Liturgy of the Hours be celebrated during adoration since this is an extension of “the praise and thanksgiving offered to God in the Eucharistic celebration...” (#96).

Earlier in this document we read, “Exposition which is held exclusively for the giving of Benediction is prohibited” (#89).

You can have Stations of the Cross first and then exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. During the time for adoration, you still need silence, plus appropriate songs or prayers that focus on the Eucharist.

Lainye - I have no idea, sorry.

BLUEJEANLADY - Ack! I hear you. Today, I took my dd to the cafeteria in the school as we had to get her big sister to school early for choir, and she did not have time to eat. I stood there in line and actually said to her, "Do you want eggs? With bacon? Or sausage?" Luckily, the man running the counter asked if she wanted the special which was French toast with berry sauce, no meat in sight! Phew! It wasn't until I sat down that I remembered it was Friday.

Oblaidon - that's great! But I had to chuckle about her question on Sunday! Sounds like my kids.

And, tigerlillies, hang in there. Teens are tough. Luckily, they are still lovable part of the time.

Well, I got very lucky. I was going to Stations tonight so DH decided to go out for fish fry. But I like the idea of giving him a choice. Thanks for the suggestion.

As for the stations, it really is a great meditation. I copied the Stations of the Cross for Women and did that before our regular service. Does anyone know why Benediction after the stations is incorrect? For years we have done this and now our new young priest says it is not correct but did not give an explanation

Here is what Mother Angelica has written about station 8:

When You saw the holy women weeping over Your torments, You consoled them and taught them to look deeper into Your Passion. You wanted them to understand that the real evil to cry over was the rejection You suffered from the Chosen people - a people set apart from every other nation, who refused to accept God's Son.

I believe that in the scripture from Luke, Jesus was referring to the judgment that Jreusalem would face in rejecting the massiah. Like he was saying, "look how bad you feel for me, but you are going to face the wrath of God that will be so severe, people will wish for mountains to fall upon them". I am thinking of the book of revelations and the 7 seals????

First, I missed the Saturday morning mass. Too tired of the work yesterday I believe came home at around 09:45 PM with some household chores waiting... I even set my alarm but didn't wake up... What happened to me??? It was very sad... In the afternoon, our choir will have practice in our church so the only thing I can do is meditation... so pity... Wish to really make it next Saturday.

For LAINYE and the rest of us women: (8th Station of the Cross)

"A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him. Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children, for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.' At that time, people will say to the mountains, ‘Fall upon us!' and to the hills, ‘Cover us!' for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?" Luke 23: 27-31

Jesus look upon us as He knows that we sacrifice a lot for our family. Let us think then that whatever we do for our family, we do to Jesus. How we love our families is how we love Jesus.

How about you? How do you understand this passage?

Today is another good day. I have said the Rosary, and done the spiritual reading that I am doing on the days I am not at Mass.
I will be going to Mass tomorrow rather than Sundays, because the buses in our town do not run on Sundays, and as it is, I can only get TO the Mass on Saturday and will have to take a cab home because the buses stop at 5:30 Saturdays.
I have given up meat for Lent, and have not had a hard time with that, so far anyway.

So give him a choice: shrimp or grilled cheese.
That way he is not being told what to eat. He is in control emoticon .

I'm so glad I am not the only one. Today I knew it was Friday because my DH was complaining about the fact that I am fixing him shrimp for supper. It's not that he doesn't like shrimp, it is just that he doesn't like to be told when and when not to eat certain foods.

I did most of a Rosary on Wednesday, so finished it yesterday while on the road to an appointment (2.5hr drive)and listened to my local Catholic Radio rosary broadcast at 6:30am while driving, so said a Rosary for yesterday too.

Attended 7am Mass today, but could not go to communion due to having eaten at 6:35 and Mass during the week is much shorter, although my parish does do sermons during the week too. Hope to get a rosary in later in the day. I'm aiming for a rosary every day.

I am doing well. Still sticking to my food list commitment. I did forget to pray with the kids before they went to school. Like so many others here, I am really focusing on the meaning of the season and have been inspired by many of you to do the rosary daily. I will start this today.
My DH is laying new wood floor in our living room today so of course the little ones want to be where he is and they are testing my "I will discipline out of love and not frustration" commitment. Surprisingly that has become easier as well. I feel like a different person.

My daughter surprised me. She wanted to get her ashes on Wednesday morning (7am), when she didn't have to be at school until 9am that day. I jumped at the chance to take her to mass. I would have gone in the evening otherwise.

I have to mention. She tried to get out of mass on Sunday by saying "We are going on Wednesday. Do we have to go on Sunday?" Yes, dear daughter, we do.

How old is your son? I am almost certain those under the age of 14 do not have to abstain. Hopefully this makes you feel better!

My daughter is 15 BUT does not want to follow the rules - drives me nuts. I try to get her to see WHY we do it but she's just so a "teenager" - uuuhhhggg!

Well I can't believe it....I am perceived as a really good converted Catholic. I was raised Methodist and I absolutely love the traditions and rituals of the Catholic Church. I am not new to all this I have been Catholic for nearly 23 years. I absolutely blew it today. I sent my son to school today with a turkey sandwich! So my dear friends, beware of the cunning one. He his laughing at me now on how he got me today. I am not going to feel like a failure or a bad example. I am going to pick myself up stronger and go at it again. I guess I should be more aware...My sin is I have not been more active and aware. Bless everyone

Hi all.......how are you doing? I am doing ok.....prayed the rosary last night, praying more, and focusing more on what this season really means. I am also still doing the 3 day thing with fruits, veggies, and liquids, and a handful of almonds. Tomorrow will be a regular day, but I am really trying to keep my focus on health and the sacrifices of Lent. Blessings!

Barbara .....that's what my friends call me! Never cared for the name Barb.

Make it a blessed and healthy day! IT IS YOUR CHOICE!

Remember how special you are and how you are soooooo worth it to be healthy and fit!!
