whoops... uhm, let me comment to the original post of "please help, do i count points or calories..."

i was trying the calories, and it wasn't working for me. so i went back to weight watchers and i worried about the points, (which on the old system was a factor of the calories, but not all of the factor) and then i started losing.

so i say, forget the calories. no more calories. (think of tone of "no cape" here. ) and just go w/the points...

I find it hard to keep my points low during the breakfast time, too! I'm about to have breakfast, but with it being the "important" meal of the day, why is is so difficult to have a low points count? emoticon

It is too confusing if you do both and who has the time? I'm choosing WW cause I pay for the program.. spark is great for the groups and motivation.. i could never try to do both, no way.. that is time for the treadmill or something to get your body moving

this was a really good thread. I just started WW recently and am having a bit of difficulty with the points, but getting better at it. I did calorie counting and fat gram counting for so long, but with calories, I just started beating myself up about what goes in and what gets burned, and do I eat more or less. It just got so frustrating. I've been stuck pretty much at a plateau for a couple years actually, and keep going up and down the same 10#. really frustrated. really hoping that getting the points down, will help get me moving again. This so far is the first week out of the month that I haven't totally blew through all the daily points, weekly points and Activity points, lol. so anxious to see what tomorrow actually brings.

Hello! I'm doing the WW program in England and we still don't have the 35 points allowance, only our daily points target. I'm in maintenance and to get used to the new system that WW is introducing after thanksgiving (they rumour) I have started to track even on Sparkpeople.

Well, I noticed that my maintenance points allowance just barely fits within the 1200/1550 calories per day Sparkpeople assigns to DIETING! No wonder I am still losing weight in maintenance! I'm happy like that as I'm still trying to lose another couple of lbs, but I do know that when I will want to stop, I will probably need to use Sparkpeople's count more than the WW one to maintain properly my weight. Besides, I never eat enough fat looking at the Sparkpeople's tracker... it doesn't worry me too much, but I'm so much looking forward to the new method that will be much more similar to Sparks!

I started tracking here to try to take off the 35#'s I was over my goal weight. Nothing seemed to break that plateau.

Right now I am tracking calories here - trying to hit the nutrition %'s and then translate it into pts and journal that.

Seems like duplicate work, but it's working for me so I am sticking with it until I am back to goal. Then just counting points since I think it's way easier.

LOL - I am actually new to SP even tho I did sign up a while back. I am doing WW and love it, but I also really like the SP site. My husband just shakes his head at me cuzz I am spending so much time tracking my eating and exercise on both WW and SP sites that I don't get to my meals on time. I know its partly because I am new to SP and I am fascinated by all it offers... but at some point I will need to decide whether I am going to track with points at WW or with calories here. I think points are easier, especially to plan for. But that may be because its what I'm already used to... I will have to give it more time before I make my decision.
For those of you who chose points... do you just ignore the myNutrition part of SP then?
Thanks,
Debbie

There is no perfect method...the issue with calorie counting is that it is pretty much an estimate at the best of times. Most experts out there agree that with strict calorie counting, weighing and measuring, you'll be somewheres plus or minus 20 percent of what you estimate.

And, don't forget that some days you are over, some days you are under your calories recommended by SP...it averages out, I think. Also, don't forget that you can increase your caloric intake without increasing your points consumed with zero point foods. At the end of the day, I'm pretty confident that it averages out and that the real story is what happens on the scales.

For me, pick one and stick with it. Don't focus on the minutia -- the big picture is waaay more important. You may be making more work for yourself, whereas in the long run, your estimated caloric intake won't make much difference.

I never calculated calories, but did the points. It is all the same because WW takes the calories from foods and uses it to calculate points. If you are a certain weight, you only got a certain amount of points for the day plus activity points, too. I don't calculate anymore, but I try to eat in moderation.

I track POINTS. I have found when I track the same food in SP I either go over or under my allotted calories.

I beleive the whole thing can get so confusing if you try and do both. I know I HAVE to get back to doing points, it's the only thing that worked for me.

I've been doing SP since July (only lost 1/2 lb) but now that I want to start counting points again, I used the SP nutrition tracker to get my calories/fat/fiber info for points. I was a little surprised at the results. I think I like WW better because you can subtract for flex points. Thanks for bringing up a good point.

I had the same problem you did. I have been eating at the same Points target for a LONG time, and it was weird to see what that translated to in calories, and what sparkpeople thought I should be eating.

In the end, I say just pick one instead of trying to do both. That's valuable time you could be spending doing something else. I think since we're here in a WW community, it makes sense that we'd pick Points, but I have to say that I've been using the SP tracker recently, and it's been interesting to do calories instead of points. But either way....

The points are much easier to track, I agree, but I was just getting sort of confused as to why the calorie count fluctuated so often. I wasn't even thinking about the fiber, fat etc!! Thanks for your replies! emoticon

I agreee just count points. But you can track your food still for the nutrients.

If you are on WW do the points. Calories are much more difficult to track and the points are calculated according to the fiber and fat as well and it makes more sense.

Can somebody please help! I have been tracking my points on my own journal, and my food on the SP journal. I have found that on some days I go over the amount of calories I'm supposed to consume- some days it's under. I am staying within my points range, eating healthy, exercising, and drinking lots of water. Do I focus more on the Points or the Calories or are the both equally as important? This can get SO confusing if I let it!! Sometimes I just want to say "WHO CARES!!!!!!" emoticon
