Thank you for your response! I have been using what you have suggested, slowing down for a minute and deep breathing until I reassure myself that I am fine. Since I posted this, I have been to the gym 3 times for 30 minute cardio.

My heart attack concerns stem from my physical symptoms of Agoraphobia, which I thought before I went to the gym, would be very bad. After going 3 times, it is not that bad after the first ten minutes. emoticon

Hi Mala - I didn't have a lot of anxiety about other people at the gym - I had a lot initially about the machines, especially the treadmill - not so much that I'd have a heart attack, more that I'd fall off. I made sure there were just gentle increases for me - no sudden jumps of speed or incline. I like to listen to music and I had a few songs that I always listened to starting out so that I felt calm. If my anxiety popped, or I had panic if I felt I was going to fall, I slowed down, reduced the incline, breathed through it for a minute then went back to where I'd been before. Your warm up and cool down sound perfect. Where does your heart attack worry come from? Is it a family issue or do you have health problems? I design my breathing mantras (which often include 'You are not going to die' as a feature) around my particular fears for the environment I'm in. Repeating them calms me and then becomes a calming habit.

Hi all, I have a couple questions for people who have/had anxiety surrounding exercise before I head to the gym.

-How did you deal with the anxiety around cardio? (I'm worried I'll have a heart attack or something)
-Warming up, I walk to the gym. It's about 5 minutes away. Is this an okay warm up?
-Cooling down, I walk home from the gym, is this also an okay cool down?
- How do you deal with the anxiety of other people being in the gym with you?

Thanks so much! I'm off to the gym!
