Thanks for the encouragement regarding losing weight on BP meds. It seems that besides being a weight-gaining med for me, the other side effects are forcing me to try again to find one that agrees with my system (with no calf pain, severe constipation or on going headaches, plus fatigue). Weening off of it this week. . .it seems that the 3 different ones I've taken do reduce my HBP to acceptable levels but the junky side effects make me want to crawl into bed and throw the covers over my head! I sense exasperation from my doctor when I report my side effects. . .sometimes I think maybe she feels I'm making this up. As Huey Lewis said in the 70's "I want a new drug. . .one that won't make me sick."

See below - Here are two links that might provide some insight into the question regarding beta-blockers and weight gain. Remember beta blockers may decrease energy expenditure and thereby reduce the effect of weigh loss initiatives such as exercise. Beta blocker also may cause you to feel tired faster and affect the amount of exercise you can do. However, it is very important to keep the communication open with your cardiologist and physicians and follow their prescribed advice on exercise, diet and compliance to your medication regimen. Remember that these medications play a vital role in most anti-hypertensive regimens. I am on a high dose of labetalol and had to really work through the effects of this medication. I made sure that I kept the communication open with my cardiologist and told him how I was feeling. With his help we finally found a dose regimen that works for me. With the help of Sparkpeople (especially the nutrition tracker) and a defined medically approved cardio exercise progam I was able to lose 35 pounds and my BP dropped from an average of 170/100 to 113/73 (today). Hope this info is helpful and check out the links - the second one is from the American Heart association. Good Luck on your journey to good health and your lifestyle change !!

Maybe that is why I am having so much trouble. I am losing about a pound a week, but according to something I just read, someone with a BMI over 30 should and can lose weight safely up to 2 pounds a week. I think I will discuss this with my doctor too! Thanks for the info!

Yes. . .weight gain on blood pressure meds. . .this can be a rant for me. They stress that blood pressure can be controlled by weight loss. . .and then they prescribe meds that put weight on. Yes, beta blockers and others do that. . .you feel defeated.. I'm on my 4th try with BP meds. . .each one had miserable side affects for me and weight gain, which forced me to switch and try another. No luck yet, this new one is causing severe pain in my calf, bloating, weight gain (stomach and breasts), blurring vision, etc. I want to hang in there, hoping the side affects with lessen. . .but losing weight is my goal, not gaining. Can you lose weight on BP meds. . .not sure, does anyone know? emoticon
