I was diagnosed in my early 20's. I haven't been on meds probably for almost 2yrs. I was always on and off meds. Can't afford to see a doctor or get meds. Need to find out what I can take naturally if anything.

I always worked construction and never saw doctors much til my 40's and when I did see them they would tell me my BP was high but attributed it to white coat syndrome. I was in my 50's before anyone did anthing about it. I use no salt, and try choosing foods with low salt content. I have begun checking BP daily to try and improve.

Once I quit smoking, my Bp dropped a lot. Sometimes If I don't drink enough water or eat too much salt, it goes up again

I also wanted to add that one time I was at work, and the nurse took my BP.. she wanted to call a doctor right away because she said my reading was high enough to look like a stroke, i almost had a breakdown.. since I was only 23.

I was on meds since day 1. I lost my health insurance and had to go off my meds cold turkey. I've learned to read the signs that my body is telling me my BP is too high (Feeling "internally" hot, thirsty)

It's good to know I was not the only one diagnosed so young.

I was 22. I was well controlled on diuretics until around 50 and then things went downhill BP wise. I am now 66 and nothing seems to help. I suffer from all the side effect of everything we try. But life is good and I am still trying.

I found out when I was 27 during a physical for enlistment in the Army. Since then, I have not always been compliant even though there was a family history on both sides of HBP, heart disease and stroke. Both of my parents died from heart attacks. I had an angioplasty to open a blocked artery at age 47. Since then, I have been a lot more compliant with taking my meds and now I have joined SparkPeople to get (and give) encouragement.

I had high blood pressure in my 20's during pregnancy, but it eventually went down. I was diagnosed in my 30's. I was under a lot of stress and was overweight and the doctor said it was high every time I came in to see her. So I've been on meds for about 20 years. My mother had HBP for years, and she wasn't overweight for a lot of the time, so there's a family history. I'm pretty sure when I lose the extra weight I'll be able to at least lower the dose.

Just wanted to say thank you for this post. When I was diagnosed it was very hard for me because I felt like I was way too young for it. It helps to know that I am not alone in having high BP in my 20's.

22 or 23. My Mom thinks there is something wrong with me for having HBP so young. My Dad has HBP but won't take meds for it. Really though, he probably has had it a long time and just never paid attention or talked to the Dr. What I always reminder her of is my friend in the military (in great shape) who has had HBP since he was 21. It is not always our fault!

Discipline is remembering what you really want.

I was 58 when I was diagnosed. My pressure that day was 181/100. That really scared me. I've been on medication since then. Now I am working to get off the meds. My pressure has been in the normal range since I got this diabetes diagnoses two weeks ago. Crazy isn't it?

I was 29 when they finally put me on meds...

played with diet, low sodium, low fat balh, blah for a year or two prior... with no change - so finally the meds were started.

At the time I was middle of the normal range for BMI, non-smoker, active etc... it's all family history/genetics for me.

Made my way to single digit sizing one veggie at a time. :)

I was borderline in the second half of my 30s but when I was 42 I went to an appointment with my neurologist and my BP was something absurd like 170/100! That's when my HBP was formally diagnosed and I quit smoking and went on meds to control my BP.

There was much rejoicing!

46, but probably should have been earlier. The military docs changed so fast no one was keeping up. A few thought it was injury related (I only go to the doc for migraines, torn gluteus minimus, and torn rotator cuff).

I started taking BP meds at age 32, when I was 19 weeks pregnant. My daughter was born prematurely, because I developed pre-eclampsia. My BP did not return to normal after my pregnancy. There is a strong family history of hypertension on my mother's side.

I was in my late 40's. I haven't had to take meds yet. I've been doing really well with getting it lowered by exercise and losing weight. At such a young age, I would think it's genetic or something similar. I wouldn't worry about it. I would just make sure you take care of yourself and do what you can to stay healthy.

I was in my 40's. The Dr. wanted to put me on meds, but didn't till I saw him again. He tried accupril as I remember. I took a couple that made the room spin. I did take HCTZ for years with NO effect on the pressure.

I have worked to control it naturally, getting in 4700 mg. of potassium a day....NEED for HTN. I exercise, walking really helps...losing 60 lbs. really helped alot!!! EATING a better diet.... but also take L-arginine which has helped the most. Something to ask the Dr. about. ALSO ask for a VITAMIN D level!!!! That helps my pressure too!

I was in my mid thirties. But when we moved back to the valley, my next doctor did not think they were necessary. About 5 years later, I got a different doctor and he put me on them. So steadily for at least 15 years.

I was about 21. I work in the health care field and even though I worked out and lost weight I still had it. I did get off HBP meds for about 2 years, but then the headaches came back. I really do think its hereditary and the job that you have.

I had just turned 23 when I was officially diagnosed with HBP and put on medication to help control it. I know I had the condition for several years prior but my normal physician at the time refused to believe I could have a problem with it at such a young age. I was just wondering if there is anyone else out there who was diagnosed at a young age. Sometimes I feel like there is something seriously wrong with me since HBP is generally associated with middle-aged people.
