Last August at age 48 after I had an incident when my son went off to Basic training. We thought it was an emotional response or the antibiotics/steroids I had been on for a bronchial infection. After 3 months of Dr visits and the BP getting to 196/115 at one point, I was put on HBP meds and an angiogram scheduled. So now 7 months later, no blockage was found, meds finally ironed out and I am a steady 124/82.

I was 45. I woke up in the morning with a terrible headache and balance problems. Went to the emergency room and was admitted directly to the hospital and stayed until the right combination of meds was found. Now 25 years later, with diet and exercise, I take only a small dose of blood pressure medication and no diuretic.

I was 48. Went to the walk in clinic, thought I had the flu. Doctor there noticed my blood pressure was high. I blamed it on all the cold medicine I had been taking. Two weeks later I was at Pizza Hut for lunch and decided to walk next door to CVS to make sure my blood pressure was back to normal, it wasn't. I began keeping a daily log of my readings and following the Dash Diet to see if it would go down. It didn't, it kept going up. When it read 170/110 my husband said if I didn't make a dr's appointment, he would make one for me. So I did and took my daily log and the dr said I was going on medication that day and probably would never go off it due to family history.

I had a Dr that kept telling me he was going to put me on BP meds At the time, it was pretty consistent at 136/90. my new Dr put me on meds (4) years ago and it's pretty much been 120/80 +/- 3 points either side. So, I guess I've had hypotension for going on 20 years that I can remember.

I was 58 and went for a medical at work. The person who took my medical acted as though I was at death's door and immediately wrote out a letter to my doctor. I was 168 over 88. Later that year after work it rose to 188/90 and when I went to see the doctor it was 159/88 & I wasn't given pills. I do have them now especially as I took ultra long flights. We have alternatives such as lemon balm mix and garlic and hawthorn pills. Diet and exercise also helps big time.

I was 48 - I'd had a hysterectomy the year before so I think it was the menopause changes that may have accelerated the hypertension. In any case, I was up to 170/110 when they slapped some meds on me. emoticon

I was 41 when I was diagnosed, but at my last office visit, it was 112/78 so I don't know if I still have it. It's possible that it might be gone finally. Recently we started working on treating the cause instead of the symptom. It may be the end of my HBP... I'll not object.

I was 23. Was hospitalized for a week and almost completely blind. Then when I was let out I couldn't afford the meds and wasn't eligible for health insurance because making 2.83 and hour is too much in the state of PA. Last October I went completely blind and renal failure and my BP was 279/230 when I was admitted. Luckily Cali is so much nicer to it's residents when it comes to health care and treatment.

My bp has hlways been a little elevated, and I ended up having pre-eclampsia with my son and was then put on meds at age 28. My goal is to loose weight to help with the bp issues so that my next pregnancy might go a little smoother.

36, it's hereditary so while I've been taking HBP pills for nearly 10 years, I have no qualms with them, it's only if I get to a maintenance weight in the 120s that I will strongly consider asking my doctor to take me off the pills. I have no problem being compliant with the medication. This isn't a medical issue that bothers me physically or mentally. Now, my other chronic condition is a whole 'nother matter and one that is a novel worth of a response...moving on!! (feel free to check out my SP teams if you really have to know what I'm referring to, I'm not hiding anything, it's just the nature of the condition and sometimes, it's actually quite boring.) emoticon

I was either 51 or 52, can't exactly remember. I've managed to keep on track with just 1 pill a day, and hoping that losing weight and moving more might mean I'll get off that. However, my mom is not overweight and is quite active and needs I think 3 meds to keep hers in control, so I'm hoping I can overcome the hereditary factor I have as well.

I was 41 yrs old when I had to give in to medication to control HBP. It was after I had my second child at age 40. It is trial and error to find the right combination of meds that work for you. Been on meds for 12 years now hoping that my weight loss journey is successful and lowers my pressure. My goal this year is to be able to stop the meds. I recently learned that birth control pills can elevate your pressure also. My 19 yr old daughter has been dealing with high readings every since she started taking birth controll pills to regulate her cycle.

Diagnosed recently, at 33 - still trying to determine meds.

And I agree with several other posters, THANKS for this post, it's a little less scary to see I'm not the only one diagnosed with it while still fairly young.

I guess what is still hard is that I've NEVER had a high reading, and then I went in to the doctor because I'd been nauseous for a week. The said I had a UTI and my blood pressure was really high (180/120). Put on meds for the UTI, yet my blood pressure never came down enough. Monitoring it for a few weeks before going on meds it ranged from about 140s/90s to even as high as 170/110s - so not just slightly elevated.

I'm still learning what I should and shouldn't eat and trying to find a way to overcome the fatigue and get to the gym. I still have hopes that eating healthier, exercising more, and losing 30-ish pound will lead to me getting off the meds ... but at the same time I wonder if my numbers are high enough to signify that lifestyle changes won't be enough. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

If you think you can or you can't, you are right.

If you're not hungry enough to eat an apple, you're not really hungry.

Happy Smelling!!!

I have been dealing with high blood pressure on and off since I was 21 and I am now 24 but I didn't start medicine until it got pretty bad almost a year ago and then this February I had to begin taking a second medicine. At least previously my weight impacted my blood pressure a lot. The heavier I am the higher my number is. I also have a problem with my blood pressure raising because of panic or just walking into the doctors office. This being said I have had readings that would be considered low but since I have to be calm, the doctors only see this occasionally.

I was diagnosed with HBP when I was 20...but since I had just gotten married (the first time) the Dr let it slide but a few months later...at age 21...he put me on a couple of different pills. Now...im almost 44 and I'm on 4 different meds (total of 6 pills/day). I'm hoping this time I can get some weight off and get it down...I soooo wish I didn't have to take pills!! I wanna be that person that gets to say that I don't have HBP anymore!!

Instead of giving myself reasons that I can't, I'm giving myself reasons I CAN!!

62. Went back a couple of months later and it was normal. I found two supplements to try first before I would take the BP meds and they brought pressure to normal.....for now.

27. I had been borderline for about 5 years and then when I became pregnant with my daughter they put me on medication. I've been on pretty much ever since.

a few weeks ago!! I am 42 and it was a total shock!! I am not very overweight (currently losing 10 lbs I gained with a move across the country!), I run regularly, eat healthy, and it was sooo not expected. Apparently it runs in my Mother's family though and so my only option is medication. Even my doctor was shocked! emoticon

I was diagnosed when I was 40 - idiopathic HBP - when my systolic was 13 but my diastolic had hit 11. I've been on medication eversince. It must have been due to extreme emotional stress I guess, since that was the time prior to my divorce.

Dec. 11 at age 33. I haven't even finished my first bottle of meds yet. I've had high bp since I had my daughter 5 years ago, but docs always brushed it off. It's amazing how even drs don't want to diagnose you because you are young. I ended up in the ER with a BP of 194/106. Now I'm running about 136/89, so not too bad. I'm hoping to make enough lifestyle changes to get off of meds.

I was 43 when I finally went to a doctor for help and started on meds. Have been trying to deal with it naturally since my mid 30's.

Have had on and off HPB for years. I've been on meds since I turned about 45 and I'm now 58. Just changed to a different one. I hate the medication. It makes me dizzy, lethargic, etc. but I continue to take it. Hoping weight loss will help!

I was diagnosed at age 15 and put on medication. That is when they also found out I had Type 1 diabetes.
