I do not eat eggs for ethical reasons and because I can not stand the look, smell or taste of them.

Yet I live with someone who eats two 7 days a week. sigh ........

My son and daughter-in-law have a mini-farm and have chickens. They are free to come and go around the yard and naturally go into their chicken coop at night (as a protection against coyotes). The recently got 6 chicks that are growing up very nicely and they are currently in the breezeway (in their own chicken coop that my son built) until they are big enough to join the 2 adults. My granddaughters have named them all based on each chicks physical characteristics. The thought of harming any of these chickens would never cross their minds and I'm sure these chickens will have a long and happy life. They get fresh eggs to enjoy in the process.

I don't eat eggs currently because the thought of them grosses me out -- it's equivalent to eating a chicken's menstrual period, which I'm pretty sure humans aren't "meant" to eat. With that said, despite knowing how gross the idea is, I do occassionally have eggs in foods if I go out to eat or something. We all make our own choices and figure out what feels the best for us.

With all that said, unless you're buying fertilized eggs (which you can find in some stores), the eggs you eat would never be a chicken, as others have said. Also, so many communities have farmers who truly do keep their chickens as loved companions and just happen to eat their eggs. I have no ethical problem with that!

My daughter is starting another flock of chickens after losing hers to a fire. She said she'd never have chickens again, but she eventually got over it. They are happy chickens with a yard and nice place to roost out of the weather.

I do have issues with soy sometimes. I don't eat it very often but it gasses me up something aweful and sometimes gives me cramps.

I try to listen to my body but I don't know enough about things yet to decide. I am researching and reading the threads on here.
I am making a vegetable soup today and for dinner going to try the ny veggie burger recipe.

For me eggs are a big no way no how regardless of un/fertilized, "free range", and all the other misnomers industries use to poison you at your expense and ignorance.
Ethically, I'd go with having pet chickens, naturally with those chickens being loved and not discarded after age two.

My body is too sensitive to the hormones naturally (or otherwise) present in eggs (and dairy and meat). I also exclusively ate eggs given by/taken from my parents' pet chickens, but the moment I cut them out, too I noticed huge differences in my cycle. While it's still not easy for my fiance necessarily to handle and it somedays can be excruciatingly painful, I went from having symptoms the week before, during, and after my period to a day or so before and of my period (and to a lesser degree of crazy/painful).

I think we should listen to our bodies (in addition to our hearts) on this issue.

Factory Farmed eggs come from cruelty, so I cannot support that at all. "Free range" is a misnomer. They just put thousands of chickens together in a big warehouse running around with "some" access to outside (very little) and they peck each other and have their beaks cut off. It is not much better than conventional egg production. 'Pasture raised' is less cruel and a good option for those who want to eat eggs and are looking for a less cruel option and as close to home raising eggs as possible but not having to do it yourself. Many more people are beginning to have laying chickens at home. Unfortunately, that means in the process of separating out the female and male chickens to send out to egg farms. The male chickens are deemed to be trash and they are slowly ground up alive as they are disposed of because it is a quicker way to kill them in bulk. We humans are a cruel species.

I think eating eggs depends on why you are vegan or veggie. If you are seeking to reduce/eliminate animal protein in your diet, then no eggs. I choose to be vegan because I believe animal protein is not good for us. But that's certainly not a commonly accepted belief so.... Commercial egg harvesting doesn't seem to me to be any better than any other commercial animal food production. "Growing your own" sounds like a great approach.

I have never liked eggs. EVER!!! That was first on my list growing up that I ticked off:
No eggs. Check!

It doesn't bother me if other people eat them, I just personally cannot stand them.

But if you enjoy them, then bon appetit!

Thank you. I appreciate your input and it makes me feel much better. My Mom saw the other day vegetarian eggs at the store. I didn't get to see them but I suppose it is chicken that live on a corn fed diet.

Eggs will only hatch into a chicken if they are fertilized. I raise hens without a rooster, so none of our eggs will ever hatch into a chicken.

Obviously, I'm okay with eating eggs. My chickens are well-treated outdoor pets, and we only eat their eggs (no factory eggs).

Some people say that we still shouldn't eat eggs because the chickens will eat the eggs and recover some nutrients. In my experience, only starved, malnourished chickens eat their own eggs. Healthy chickens tend to either brood them (attempt to hatch, impossible with a unfertilized egg) or ignore them until they eventually rot.

So, I feel no guilt eating our eggs.

Book lovers never go to bed alone.
